"Lefty upstart Zohran Mamdani has leapfrogged over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the city’s ranked choice Democratic primary for mayor..."

"... according to a stunning new poll released Monday. In its hypothetical initial round of voting, Cuomo’s lead shrinks to 3 percentage points, with 35% of likely Democratic voters supporting him compared to 32% for Mamdani and 13% for city Comptroller Brad Lander, the Emerson College Polling/Pix 11/The Hill survey found.... [S]ince no one garners the more than 50% of the vote needed to win outright, the ranked choice system kicks in. That means that even if a voter’s first choice is eliminated in successive rounds of calculations, their other picks could still be in the mix and emerge as the eventual overall winner. Mamdani finally surpasses Cuomo in the eighth round [!!!!!] of the simulated ranked choice voting — 51.8% to 48.2% — in the latest poll conducted June 18-20...."

I'm reading "Shocking poll shows Mamdani overtaking Cuomo in NYC’s ranked choice primary" (NY Post).

Yah, that’s why ranked choice voting is a scam- one the radical left whole heatedly supports. Their policies are unpopular, their candidates are unpopular but ranked choice is a way to fool some people into thinking they are. I’d like to support the idea to let NYC destroy itself but I know a bipartisan congress will keep shoveling tax dollars in their direction…

"Ranked choice voting is idiotic."

However, it is a step above what Democrats have been doing.

What's that, you ask?

Well, in the most recent election, the Democrats elected a candidate to represent their party in the Presidential election.

That candidate was removed, and another failed candidate who had never won even a single primary election was put in his place.

In another example, a white male won the election to become a Vice-Chairman of the Democrat Party. He was then removed from that post. Because he's a white male.

So ranked-choice voting is a step up from what Democrats have been doing.

I fully expect that if Mamdani wins the election, Cuomo will be the next Mayor of New York.

Deep State Reformer చెప్పారు...

"Ranked choice" voting is a scam at best. If no candidate hits 50% then do successive run-offs until one does. This farcical set-up is guaranteed to be gamed and jiggered. The R's need to outlaw ranked choice schemes with legislation while they still can.

As for ranked-choice voting, only truly suicidal voters want this. It's not even in place in Las Vegas, the home of 'where the house always wins'. But it makes sense that somehow, the ward heels in NYC have devised a way to slide it into place. Vote Zohran ! Cuomo has such a tired old smoker’s face. But it looks like he has had some cosmetic surgery recently and lightened his hair. Good choices. But he needs to smile more and lose the tie. Mamdani is young and handsome. Lots of energy in his photos. Lately he’s appeared with his hair disheveled. Very good look for him.
Democrats need younger candidates but all young Democrat politicians are radicals.

Bushman of the Kohlrabi చెప్పారు...

If Zohran wins he’s likely to be the 2028 Democrat Presidential nominee. If he loses, the DNC will probably go with Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Both accurately represent the current direction of the Democrat party. I suppose either could be seriously challenged by AOC but why opt for imitation when the real thing is readily available.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

The cities and states cant' even count regular ballots without fraud and incompetence. California takes weeks and even months to count their ballots. Iowa in 2020, never did count all the ballots for the Democrat Primary.

I wont even go into the massive fraud in 2020, 2022, and 2024. Go ask Kari Lake about Arizona.

But we can trust NYC to do "ranked voting". Some weird Rube Goldberg system of voting, that somehow in someway gives you a better result. What insanity!

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

"Ranked is a scam. Its another way for the D's to game the system. "

Thank you. Well said. In Alaska it resulted in a Democrat Congressman getting elected, despite being the 3rd choice and Lisa Murkey getting elected - again. That was the whole point of it. And it worked. But its just BS.

Eva Marie చెప్పారు...

Their political posters are also interesting.
Cuomo: red white and blue
Lander and Mamdani: lots of blue and orange
Mandani’s posters usually refer to him by his first name and the lettering is 3 dimensional. Different.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

The difference in approach between the R's and D's just shows their different characters.

If the D's cant win, they change the rules. They're constantly changing the election rules, and trying to committ fraud or expanding the voter rolls (they want non-citizens and 16/17 year olds to vote). And the D judges strike down requirements to show a valid ID, vote in person, or vote by election day. None of which is based on the law or the constitution.

Meanwhile the R establishment.....does nothing. They can barely rouse themselves to fight the D's when they want to gerrrymander them out of existance. And when Trump lost in 2020, they couldn't wait to surrender and agree with the DNC that "there was no vote fraud".

The difference is amazing. Any martian would conclude the Republican establishment is a "fifth column" planted by the Democrats to help them win.

Leland చెప్పారు...

Concur with many above that rank choice voting should be outlawed. However, I'm even more surprised by how far it goes. I can understand wanting to avoid the time and cost of a run-off election. But that is just one more election. 8 rounds?

Look, if you really want this, how about everyone votes ranked choices. If nobody gets to 50% initially, add in second choice votes. If still nobody gets to 50%, take top 2 to run-off. It still is a gamed system and I can see people wanting the top 3, or perhaps all those getting 30% or higher going to run-off. However, 8 freaking rounds? That's not serious.

MadisonMan చెప్పారు...

I'm picturing a future ranked choice election where the entire citizenry is sitting in front of their one-armed bandits (maybe they're in Teslas), but instead of money, they're voting, and pulling the lever, and seeing what the results are, and then pulling the lever again and again until a winner occurs, and chips flow.

I don't understand why you all hate ranked choice so much. In an run of the mill primary, you typically have to get a majority of the vote (50% +1) to avoid a run-off, so in effect that is a two-tier ranked choice. NYC's ranked choice is for the Democratic primary only.

This is the second time NYC has had a ranked choice race for Mayor. Eric Adams (who was certainly the most conservative Democratic candidate) ended up winning that contest. The Republican candidate in the final was Curtis Sliwa.

Yes she does, and she also had a post on the word "niggardly" once and decided that was also inappropriate even though the etymology is completely unrelated to the n-word. (I guess homonyms are also bad).

Recently she has started deleting posts with the "r-word" in them, which I objected before she banned it because it is a slur against the developmentally disabled and has been for a long time (even when I was high school back in the seventies when we still told Polish jokes. the r-word was considered inappropriate).

Does anyone think government—run grocery stores are a good idea? These are already extremely low margin businesses and are not why food costs are high.

NYC already has extortionately high taxes and a $118 billion (versus London's $19B) city budget. The fact that the city can't manage to provide services with that high of a budget does not fill me with hope that marginally higher taxes on the wealthy will usher in a socialist utopia.

The top 1% in NYC already pay 50% of city taxes and can just leave for NJ or CT or FL. This will end badly if he is elected.

It's promoted by pious good-government types as a moderating influence that gets us closer to the "center", but that's not the way it seems to work in practice.

If a communist like this bastard can win ranked choice voting anywhere in America, the locality is an enemy outpost and should be expelled from the Union. Let New York form its own city-state like Singapore. All its fabled wealth is merely tribute extracted from flyover country. If they were expelled, Wall Street would instantly decamp for Miami or Dallas. Let's cut them off with nothing, and let them find out for themselves about the virtues of government food commissaries run by corrupt socialist functionaries.

The whole point of ranked choice voting is to take power away from the normies and transfer it to the activists. In the case of NYC (and Portland, Oregon, where I live) the activists are overwhelmingly progressives. In other places , they might be MAGA supporters. Bah, humbug.

Douglas B. Levene చెప్పారు...

@JaimeRobert asked, “I'm not sure I understand the opposition to ranked choice. How is it that different from a runoff if nobody gets 50% in the first round?” That’s a fair question. The answer is that in a two-person runoff, it’s easy to understand who the candidates are and most voters make that effort. In a ranked-choice election with 10-20 candidates, most normal voters will not expend the time and energy required to learn about all the candidates so that they can rank them. That’s especially true in local elections, less so for presidential primaries. The activists, on the other hand, the people who live and breathe politics, know everyone running and have opinions about them all. The result is that the activists vote their full ballot, ranking as many candidates as they can, while the normies list their favorite and maybe another one or two others, and leave the rest blank. The result is to transfer political power to the activists.

So once again we discover left wingers have two motivating characteristics: economic illiteracy and greed. As such they have convinced themselves the moral function of government is giving them whatever they want of their neighbors property.

Studies have shown that people on the right understand the left's positions and arguments much better than the left understands the right's positions and arguments. There's a related phenomenon that the more the left reveals their preferences we learn that their critics were right all along. Conversely the more we learn about the right the more we recognize the left's branding was a caricature rarely applicable to anyone. At some point people will realize this and accept this reality, starting with people who have the least emotional connection and sense of self invested in left wing politics.

Greg The Class Traitor చెప్పారు...

@JaimeRobert asked, “I'm not sure I understand the opposition to ranked choice. How is it that different from a runoff if nobody gets 50% in the first round?”

It's fundamentally the same. But those runoffs are also total crap. Which is why almost no one in the US does them.

They're the demand of an emotional child, who doesn't want to have to actually make a choice and decide. "Why do I have to vote for the most likely candidate to win who's closest to what I like!!11! I want to vote for my heartthrob!"

Well, it's because we don't like emotional children like you, and don't want your vote to matter, because your'e guaranteed to make a bad choice.

The whole "must have 50%+1" scam came about in the US because Southern Democrats wanted to be able to have multiple white candidates to chose from, but didn't want black Democrats to be able to coalesce around one candidate in the primary and push him across the finish line with 40% of the vote

Greg The Class Traitor చెప్పారు...

The difference between RCV and a runoff is that in a runoff only the top 2 first place finishers matter.
With RCV being "more second best" is more important than being people's top choice.

The characteristics that make someone "most common 2nd choice" are different to, and IMAO inferior to, the characteristics that make someone "most common 1st choice". It's why I think RCV is even worse than runoffs
