"The usual justification for rehashing Diana’s story is that she — a barely educated aristocrat who married a future king — is just like us..."

"... whoever we might be: feminists, gay people, Jews, Asians, Americans. White is very aware of this and rounds up some of the dafter examples of such deluded narcissism. The journalist Julie Burchill once claimed that Diana ticked off all the classic traits of a Jewish woman: 'Profoundly maternal, disliking horses, strong-nosed, comely, needing too much and giving too much.'"

From "Britain was obsessed with Princess Diana — not any longer/The barely educated aristo was a blank screen on to which we projected our dreams and delusions. Edward White’s biography delves into this strange 'Dianaworld'" (London Times).

Meanwhile, also in the London Times: "Prince Harry: I want reconciliation but the King won’t speak to me/The Duke of Sussex, who opened up in an interview with the BBC, earlier lost his appeal for the right to taxpayer-funded police security" (“So, you know, I miss the UK. I miss parts of the UK. Of course I do. And I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show, you know, my children my homeland.... Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book...')."

Diana was a fairy tale. Demure, pretty schoolteacher marries a prince. It wasn't real, but that doesn't change the mythos. You can talk about the actual Diana and the choices she made, or you talk about her as archetype, but don't mix the two.

Heirs and spares. Unneeded spares never seem to find their own way.
Prince Andrew flies a chopper as a missile decoy in the Falklands war, Harry flies a combat chopper in Afghanistan.
Both come home and marry a bimbo. Andrew ends up divorced and palling around with people like Epstein. Harry and his Lady Macbeth end up trying to hold court in Hollywood while writing a tell all autobiography.

Lazarus చెప్పారు...

The reaction to Diana's death was way over the top. The reaction against the reaction was also over the top. If Britons aren't obsessed with Diana almost 30 years later that's natural. Were they still thinking about Edward VIII in 1966? Not many were.

john mosby చెప్పారు...

The one thing that bothers me about all this is that the two ostracized royals - Harry and Andrew - are the two actual combat veterans. People make fun of the Falklands, but one of Andrew's missions as a 22-year-old helicopter pilot there was to be a decoy for anti-ship missiles. He also flew medevacs off burning ships when the whole decoy thing didn't quite work. Harry, of course, was in Iraq as a forward air controller and Afghanistan as an Apache pilot.

Their dad/granddad, Philip, was also a real combat veteran (he resurrected Drake's fire-ship technique in one battle), but he either didn't see the need to devote some attention to their post-combat reintegration, or he wasn't allowed to.

You would think that the Family and/or the various governments of the day would have insisted on putting the work in to get Harry and Andrew healed up, as an example for how Britain takes care of its vets. But I guess it is a two-way street; Harry and Andrew would have to do their part. And Andrew potentially had some real crimes: political finance stuff and the sex trafficking. But all Harry's guilty of is being a wanker. Surely the Crown's mercy extends to wankers who have put their bodies between Britain and her enemies.

Eva Marie: "They can’t. Any interaction will be fodder for the next tell all book and all written to disparage the royals."

Yeah, true. I was just hoping for some kind of intervention/showdown, like happened with Edward and Wallis, or with Margaret and whichever divorced guy she first wanted to marry.

Like not only the senior royals, but also the PM of the day and maybe some former ones (Theresa May and Tony Blair?). They'd say "this isn't about your marriage, or even about the Family. It's about our fucking country and the message we send to your fellow veterans. First off, Meg, go wait outside. You were not invited to this meeting. Second, Harry, we admit we screwed the pooch on this one. We should have been much more supportive of you. We will be much more supportive from this day forward. But there's also some things you will have to do...."

I dunno, I can dream.

Lots of countries have a "head of State" in addition to a PM. Usually its a "President" with little power. So, on 2nd thought the Brits might as well keep their monarchy.

The problem with getting an undeserved honor like being a king, is that the undeserving people in second place become your enemy.

In more civilized days, the new king would have all his genetic competition killed when he took over.

Unearned money does not make you happy. The only way money makes you happy is if you are part of the team that makes the money. Living off the compound interest of money stolen in 1066ad is the way to rot yourself to death.

Bruce Hayden చెప్పారు...

One thing to keep in mind with GB, is that the rolls of Head of State and Head of Government are separated, while they are unified here. The Royals are expected to perform the former role, while the PM and his Cabinet the latter one. Anne, sister of Chuck and Randy Andy, is finally slowing up, after a half century of 40+ hour weeks, traveling the country representing in the crown. She also had a long military career on the side. Kate, sans the military career does the same, when she can. And, of course, her, husband, the crown Prince, does the same. Then, there was Meghan, who basically refused to do the duty she married into. She just wanted the title, the money, and the deference, but was unwilling to pay the price the rest of the family paid. No wonder Harry and his father are estranged. His father spent over a half century traveling the country, and the world, representing the crown, day in, and day out, before finally ascending the throne. And his son and daughter-in-law are over in LA, and just want to live the high life, with no responsibilities.

I think that’s profoundly true. Liz 2 was a transitional figure. The world she was crowned in had pretty much disappeared by the late ‘70’s. She made the pretense work by force of character, but at this point it’s completely unsustainable.Even the fumes have dissipated.

I remember when Princess Anne was a young Princess. She had a face to destroy fairy tales. Princess Diane really could play the part. Apparently she was a somewhat erratic young woman who couldn't handle the role. Queen Elizabeth really knew how to be benign, aloof, and dull throughout her life. Not everyone can pull that off......I think the whole point of the Royal Family is to live pampered, privileged lives. It's great to think that such a life is possible. Life pretty much sucks. I'd like to be a playboy Prince. That's probably more fun and less work than being a rock star.

I watched Harry's BBC interview. He really does come off as an entitled jerk. When the interviewer asked why the British taxpayers should pay for his security when he's no longer a working royal, his answer was basically because he was born a prince without asking to be, and he deserves it. I later read in The London Times that he actually does get taxpayer funded security when he goes back to the UK, but he has to give them 28 days notice of his plans and itinerary. Evidently, he doesn't feel that's good enough.
It strikes me that the rest of the Royal Family understands that this royalty thing is a two way street. The people of England expect something from them in return for supporting them, even if it is just ceremony. Harry doesn't seem to understand that.

Kate said that Diane was a fairy tale princess. I thought that at the time. Young teacher of noble birth married the Prince of the Realm. Ye she failed to understand that it was not a fairy tale. Charles was flawed man that was in love with another woman. As a the woman married into the Royal family her duty was to have heirs and be the face of a beautiful princess. Yet she could not accept the infidelity and then did it herself.

We do not have royalty , yet even Hilary maintained her marriage despite Bill's philandering . Diana could not even do that.

She was a needy woman child who did not understand her role. Instead it was fight with her spouse on who could be more popular. She made her unhappiness public and upstage as much as she could .
Harry's wife is even worse. An entitled racist bitch . I had no idea that she was bi racial and did not care. But she made sure that we would care. Trump said it correctly that Harry is pussy whipped and if he wants his children he is stuck. Still his childish desire to hurt by writing that book was stupid. He was the spare and not needed. He is out of the royal family.

The one single factor that the British crown espoused was dignity and Diana and Harry showed they have none.
