He said... that he had assumed that most of the coins had been collected, and that the remaining change had been washed away by the four inches of rain earlier in the day, which caused minor flooding in the town of about 1,400 residents.

"The funniest part to me was that they picked up the dimes using the vacuum trucks that are used to suck out sewage and water and stuff like that."
Said the mayor of Alvord, Caleb Caviness, quoted in "Millions of Dimes Spill and Shut Down Texas Highway for 14 Hours/Road lanes were closed after a truck overturned and spilled its cargo. Crews used vacuums, shovels and their hands to scoop up freshly minted loose coins" (NYT).

Vacuum extraction sucks balls
In junior high a kid would come to our lunch table EVERY day without exception and ask, “Got a dime?” And everyday of that year the answer was always the same, “No.”
His father was podiatrist, so I don’t think they were hurting financially.
More likely the vacuum trucks they used are commonly used in oil and gas work for produced water, not septic tank pumping. Alvord is a tiny little town on the way to Wichita Falls, not even big enough for a stoplight - although they've got 2 flashing yellows.
It would be so easy to turn on a dime on that road.
Someone had to drop a dime to let the mayor know about the spill.
My designated WORDLE opener aced it today. Time to decide on a new one.
They use the same equipment to remove human "burdens". Now, that is funny, a dark humor, a wicked solution. Efficient, too.
Was Stacey Abrams around to show off her graceful moves? Was WaPo there to gush?

"Pandemonium ensues as she walks to the far left of the stage, like a runway supermodel, stops on a dime, poses, tilts her head slightly and smiles. Camera flashes explode. She next pivots and walks slowly to the center of the stage, freezes there and repeats the pose. Again, the flashes explode. Abrams is summoning her inner actress, and she is both enjoying the moment and getting through it to get to the conversation. She then pivots and walks to the far right of the stage, same. You wonder whether she has done this before, because it is not necessarily what one would expect from a 46-year-old politician who was nearly elected the first black female governor in U.S. history."
When a watch part joins the Swiss Space Program and pings off into oblivion I put in a fresh vacuum cleaner bag and clean the floor, then autopsy the bag. I think I have a perfect recovery record with that method vs magnets and flashlights...
If they are composite metal dimes they aren't worth the effort to or the cost to pick them up. They're just metal tokens on the road. On the other hand if it's a "junk" silver dime it's worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 for each one. By the end of the year I'm thinking that be worth between $5-$6 a piece.
Bet a bunch of those metal detector people are closing in.
Slim Pickens is waiting!

That's about the same buying power it had in 1910 or so when John D. Rockefeller was becoming well known for handing out dimes to schoolchildren.
Even in my day, the value of a dime had eroded to such a degree that the story was used to portray him as a miserly skinflint, but in those days it was a generous gift that could buy enough candy for a kid to make himself sick. The value of the dimes he gave away would be equivalent to millions of dollars today.
"If it ain'y my money , officer, why'd you dump it all over the road?"

Standard CSI move for the last 40 years as well.
Everyone knows money is dirty. But nobody does anything about it because you can go to jail for laundering it.
