Follow-up prompts: "Compare that to how Trump was treated for telling protesters on January 6th, 2021 to walk 'peacefully and patriotically' to the Capitol" and "I'm interested in the difference in seeing violence in words and consider that Comey, like Trump, has loyalists who might hear direction and take it." And: "Detail Comey's 'history of cryptic social media posts.'"
Grok's responses: here.
AND: Here's the article in WaPo: "Comey under investigation for ‘86 47’ social media post, Trump team says/The Trump administration accused the former FBI director of insinuating a call to violence in his Instagram post, which he denied" (free-access link).
The informal verb “86” originated in hospitality, meaning to refuse service to a customer or that a menu item was not available, and its use expanded over time to broadly refer to rejecting, dismissing or removing, according to its dictionary definition. It can also refer to killing something or someone.
“Cool shell formation on my beach walk,” Comey wrote in the original Instagram post. In a follow-up post, Comey wrote that he assumed the shells he saw “were a political message.”
“I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence,” Comey continued. “It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
Some folks...

86 is something I was vaguely aware of, like 187, as slang for murder. I was once told that, to 86 someone, was to put them in a hole 8 feet long and six feet deep. But I have no idea if that was Comey's interpretation.
Trump has really annoyed a lot of people with insider knowledge of how presidential security works, and how it's vulnerable. The problem for anyone thinking along those lines is that the problem is now bigger than Trump. Their problem is Trumpism.

The ungrateful louts. He kept Hillary out of prison.
I confess I didn't see the connection between Agent 86 and killing someone until last night, though I was very young when we watched it. The Chief was probably ready to 86 him at least once an episode. Seems like a lot of people were killed off screen on that show.
The beach shell display I saw and liked simply said…
Trump Won
BITCH
"The Secret Service should definitely give Comey a good, scary talking to, but would prosecution result in a conviction?"
That's precisely why we have juries. Arrest him. Book him. Fingerprint him. Jail him. He can post bond if he wants, or sit in the can until his trial.
That is how our country is supposed to work.
Except that some people are ABOVE the laws passed to keep YOU in line. Not them. And this will continue so long as you voluntarily continue paying the taxes that support it.
Stop that.
Every nasty thing asserted about Comey in this thread seems credible to me. If he could make himself invisible, I believe he would kill Trump in a heartbeat.
But...! I'm with Tim on this (“86 the bum!” = toss him out, not murder him).
Yesterday, if I was asked to list as many murder euphemisms I could, after listing the dozen or so off the top on my head, 86 would never even crossed my mind. However, I've spent many thousands of hours in restaurants and around food service in my youth and don't recall anyone ever using 86 in that context either. Maybe it's a regional thing. I've heard it mean... to remove or hide someone or something - pitch it out, throw away (not particularly in the kitchen though, except maybe incidentally). More like something has worn out, like an old spark plug, so "86 it". By far, most often it was run and hide (like vamoose - skedaddle) as with the original, possibly apocryphal meaning (86 Bedford Street), or Tim's example.
Surely there are many many quotes from movies, TV, literary fiction, etc. where it was used to mean, or insinuate, murder. Grok did a poor job, finding only one or two very obscure examples. Popular culture should be teeming with examples. Let's hear 'em. I'm open to being persuaded.
The message could have been "Kill Trump" and the arguments would be the same. 1st Amendment, "Kill" has many meanings, There are lots of people named Trump, Comey didn't know what the word "kill" means, Some people say "you kill me", which means you are a very funny guy, etc., etc..
Comey finds a "cool shell formation" on the beach. He assumes it has a political meaning but he wasn't advocating violence (why he might jump directly from "political meaning" to "advocating violence" is an exercise left to the reader). Leftards across the intertubes respond with "But "86" is a term commonly used in restaurants and has nothing to do with killing people."
So- according to the left, we've got a political statement related to something going on in restaurants. No tax on tips? Or what?
" Bradl[e]y Manning is still in jail for this."

Nope . Sentence commuted by Baraka and released in 2017.
Not a happy life for him/her/Chelsea since. Went back to jail for refusing to testify in a grand jury probe, but released again in 2020 after a suicide attempt.

We see the clear intent in their [Democrats?] actions and statements every day.

Comey is not a "their". He is HE.
If HE were charged with threatening Trump's life, someone would have to prove that HIS statements were meant to convey that threat, "beyond a reasonable doubt."
A "reasonable prosecutor" would know that.
Ain't happening.

I do not care about what will happen or not happen.
Comey and his co-conspirators are clearly pushing an environment where people feel comfortable killing Trump and they will turn the person who succeeds in this act into a hero just like Mangione.
There will either be consequences for this and this will be suppressed or they will continue until they succeed.
I do not think you people really understand what a calamity the assassination of Trump would turn out to be.
According to Green's Slang Dictionary, the term "eighty-six" has meant to commit murder for many years. It has multiple examples going back to 1978.

2. (US) to kill, murder; to execute judicially.
1978
19801990200020102020 2021
1978 [US] in L.A. Times 15 Mar. I 26: At least it suggests that the police haven’t 86ed (murdered) him [HDAS].
1986 [US] C. Stroud Close Pursuit (1988) 156: You did a nice job on that chicken hawk up in the Bronx. [...] Eighty-sixed the fucker?
2002 [US] J. Ellroy ‘The D.A.’ in Destination: Morgue! (2004) 147: Miller 86’d Donald Keith Bashor. Miller was a self-described gas.
2021 [US] J. Ellroy Widespread Panic 257: ‘She offered him some snout [...] and it all got tangled up, and poor Janey got 86’d’.
It's certainly plausible that an Internet rando who had been living under a rock for almost 50 years could be unaware of that quite well-known definition of 86.
But it's not plausible for a man who's made his career out of investigating murders and mob actions to claim he was wholly unaware of it. Especially since he's a known serial liar to begin with.
This fucking sociopath knew exactly what he was doing. And being a lawyer, managed to keep himself just enough plausible deniability to escape formal legal consequences.
We should definitely pursue disbarment, though, and if he hasn't forfeited any security clearances, those should be 86ed, post-haste.

Comey is a HE, not a THEY . If HE were tried in criminal court, the feds would have to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" that HE intended to threaten the president with violence.
The contentious arguments here about what "86" means would be raised in the courtroom.
A "reasonable prosecutor" would understand how weak his case would be, and refuse to indict.
I have no qualms about the FBI and Secret Service having gentle chats with him to get his mind right, but...no case.
(It would be interesting to see how many would claim that angry shouts of "Fuck Trump" could be construed as a threat to commit sexual violence against him.)

muh princples!
Just like a good DC Republican.
And don't get me wrong.
When they charge Comey for his attempt to incite the murder of Trump they also need to charge him with perjury, providing false testimony to the FISA Court, leaking classified information, entrapment, espionage, and sedition.
To start.
I've long understood both the toss him outta the bar and eliminate him meanings of 86. But it was just a few short years ago the left taught me that 88 meant heil Hitler. And the OK sign meant white power, and....
