Writes Emma Goldberg, in "Living the Slop Life/Slop videos. Slop bowls. Slop clothing hauls. When did we get so submerged in the slop-ified muck?" (NYT).
Sometimes a word helps us perceive and understand and react to a problem. A word can shape or change the problem. Is "slop" accurate? Is it propaganda?
What are the words that have worked like that? Looking back over my decades listening to language in America, I think of "middlebrow," "plastic," "hippie," "punk," "revolution," "yuppie," "hipster," "woke."
I chose to embed that video to convey the power of the word "plastic" in 1967. If there was one word...
... one thing you got the message you wanted to avoid — in 1967 — it was plastic. The album "Absolutely Free" and the movie "The Graduate" came out that year, and we of the younger generation — we, the Boomers — were edging toward shunning all things "plastic."
But it's just a coincidence that Zappa's spoken-word intro to "Plastic People" seems strangely timely: "The President of the United States! Fellow Americans!
He’s been sick. I think his wife will bring us some chicken soup."
No soup for us. Slop bowl.
ADDED: Once upon a time, the Slop was a dance: "Well, you can rock it, you can roll it/Do the slop and even stroll it..." That's the Chubby Checker version of "At the Hop." The more familiar version, by Danny and the Juniors, has "Well, you can rock it, you can roll it/Do the stomp and even stroll it..." You might want to guess that Checker just flubbed the lyrics, but the Slop was one of the 16 dances named in "Land of a Thousand Dances" — along with the Pony, the Chicken, the Mashed Potato, the Alligator, the Watusi, the Twist, the Fly, the Jerk, the Tango, the Yo-Yo, the Sweet Pea, the Hand Jive, the Bop, the Fish, and the Popeye.
That was 1965.

I haven't heard slop used this way. I don't really like it as it doesn't capture the real problem with stuff overload.
Looking at your examples, I'm reminded of "mid"--a recent social media hot-button term that is used to mean dumb, unoriginal, unworthy of respect even though it actually means average and, therefore, normal.
There are now millions of slop videos (created and many times voice-over'd by AI) on YouTube, designed like Wikipedia articles that just spit out words in videos long enough to garner advertising revenue. The only way I've found to avoid them is to only watch content from creators I've specifically subsrcribed to.
Finding new interesting content used to occur in my feed. Now it cannot occur, and so as I bore of the old content providers, or they die or quit YouTube, my use of YouTube will wind down and the company will be worthless.
Another victim of enshittification.
Ah hear my mother call
I was one of five born to my mother
An older sister and three young brothers
We've seen it hard, we've seen it kind of rough
But always with a smile, she was sure to try to hide
The fact from us that life was really tough
I can hear my mother call
I can hear my mother call (Ah)
Late at night I hear her call
Oh lord, lord I hear her call
She said, "Father, father it's for the kids (Ah)
Any and every thing I did
Please, please don't judge me too strong
Lord knows I meant no wrong
Lord knows I meant no wrong"
Then the devil sang
"Would you like to dance with me? We're doin' the cosmic slop"
Where can a mid-dlebrow eat his plastic bowl of slop in peace?
What do you call republishing the “uncanny stream of words and photos and videos that artificial intelligence spits out...."?
Sloppy seconds.
Chicken soup has not been proven safe and effective for the upcoming pandemic
Sounds like Emma could use some Clobazam for her slopazam. That should solve her probazam.
Hog Slop.
Emma Goldberg.
i always get her confused with Rosa Luxemman.
Slop is the urbane model of AI. Grok, you have competition.
..."When did we get so submerged in the slop-ified muck?"...
What did you think would happen when you jumped in with both feet?
The next wave will bring The Seekers. They might even put down their phones.
"When did we get so submerged in the slop-ified muck?"
How about when every town started to have a place where phony hippies would meet. Psychedelic dungeons
popping up on every street, filled with hippy, trippy gypsies. They would all stay a week and get the crabs and take a bus back home. In hindsight, they were really just phonies. But I guess you had to - or were supposed to forgive them because they were stoned.
Kamala was the Queen of Slop
Another meaning of slop is looseness in a mechanism.

In 2023, iirc, some dink on TwiXter called Margot Robbie's looks "mid" in reposting a photo she had posted of herself without makeup.
Why suggest slop is exclusive to AI? Just a few posts ago was slop from John Stewart meant to poke fun at slop from Jake Tapper. And then there is the NYT own Maureen Dowd.
I've assumed the Shein model is to send out free underpants to girls willing to model them, saving Shein money on models...
We used to call a shot in basketball that went in by luck "slop".
Slop Detox. Slop free zone. Enter the Take It Down Act.

I did my part by shunning that album. What a waste of good vinyl.
As a farm kid, one of my daily chores was to take the slop buckets of food scraps and leftovers from our house and my grandparents' house to feed to our pigs, quite literally "slopping the hogs". The word "slop" has a particular sight, smell, and sound connotation for me that isn't pleasant.
Everytime I see the Graduate, I see clever propaganda. All aimed at young people. Look, at all those middle-aged people, they're so icky. Meanwhile, Hoffman and the daughter are so cool and idealistic. That's why I liked the movie when I first saw it at 16, and thought it was crap when saw it again in the 1990s. Hoffman's character isn't a hero, he's a class A no. 1 jerk.
I'm not following. What is this "slop" that it is impossible to avoid these days?
Monty Python has a sketch where "woody" is a word of praise. Wonder it that was a riff off "Plastic" being a negative word.
If you don't figure in slop to a design, the product is likely to be clunky at best and tits up worst. Slop is the purpose of ullage.

I remember that--calling Margot Robbie "mid" was a WTF?! twitter moment and it set the tone--I don't think I've ever seen it used by someone in way that didn't reflect worse on the poster than on the person posted about.
Slop is a choice. Stop complaining about your own choices. Cultured discerning Crackers like myself simply refuse to engage with it or consume it. The hunt for non-slop is one of the pleasures of living.
Little Boxes made of ticky tacky.

"Slop bowl" is exactly how I feel about all these "build-your-own'" bowl meal places. I came into the place to eat a meal, and I want the restaurant to give me some options for a complete meal but I don't want to have to make all the choices. You've hired chefs right? They can create the menus.

My YouTube feed used to be full of amazingly good content, now I have to wade through sumps full of slop, obvious videos narrated by AI voices. I use it less and less myself, like the commenter above.
In college, when playing eight ball, which was the only game we played on a pool table, "No slop!" meant that if you didn't call the ball and the pocket, it came back out and got set up on the dot where you racked the balls at the beginning.
On the other hand, ChatGPT in "deep research" mode just did an amazingly thoroughly researched, university quality paper, complete with footnotes and discussion, for me on a snippet I fed in from the novel Ulysses. It's like the best and worst of AI at the same time. It's great, if you have already done your time doing the stuff the old fashioned way, but it's a horror show if you use it to dodge your education. But then again, maybe the education you are dodging is obsolete anyway? Maybe video games really do provide the brain exercises and strategic thinking lessons that writing rigorous papers used to...
That scene from "The Graduate": if somebody came up to recent graduates now with one word to secure their future, that word (if it is a word) would be AI.
Is it strange that a generation whose poets, preachers, and prophets were printed on vinyl raged against plastics? "Plastic" did have bad connotations back in 1967, but "materials science" would have been a good field to get into (though not as good as computer science). You're not in the business of oil or automobiles. You're in the business of transportation. It's similar with plastics and "materials." That way you can pivot away from oil-based products if and when it's necessary as well as avoid the connotations that "plastic" acquired. If we've advanced over the years, one development is that we replaced plastics with different and better plastics.
"Slop" struck me as propagandistic. It puts AI content into one bucket without analysis or differentiation and implies that human-generated content can't be equally bad. It's not a very descriptive term and it focuses more on one's reaction to the content than on the content itself. Isn't most of the internet a slop bowl. the human-originated content as much as the machine-derived content?
They've seen through it. The digital world. First, it was fascinating; then, it was fascinating to find what was new; then, it was eye candy; now, it's slop. Honestly, isn't this merely the cycle of fashion and fad as known through all time and world wide? Only, see, they thought they were pioneers of the eschaton and now they'd see themselves as a tiresome fad ... only ... can leading the world to the eschaton become a tiresome fad? like The Life and Times Methusaleh- Unabridged? and can they THEMSELVES ("My Precious") be a bore? dated like a disco ball ? That's what's holding them up; that's why they gaze at their phones: "Please, Sir, can I have less?" instead of just putting their phones down. My Facebook feed is slop - why? Why -because 24/7 - who needs it?

The one word I got from “The Graduate” was Katherine Ross. Yeah, I know—I’ve never been good at math.
