"Growing up, Kyle Smith did not like sports. 'I was scared of the boys in sports,' said Mr. Smith, 31, who is gay."

"He described himself as the type of teen who was way more interested in watching 'The September Issue,' the documentary about the inner workings of Vogue.... He was... named the first-ever fashion editor of the National Football League... with a directive to use fashion and style to reach new audiences through the league’s media platforms. Mr. Smith works with athletes to create and share content — photos or videos of them showcasing their off-duty style at events like men’s fashion week — and helps players and teams build relationships with traditional fashion media brands like GQ and Vogue. At Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, he will be part of a team covering what players and other notable attendees wear to the game during a new red-carpet segment...."

Until the NFL has a trans (not just gay) fashion consultant it is a fascist organization.

Talk about queering the pitch...

Peachy કહ્યું...

Are we paying for this thru USAID? I hope not.
If not - carry on. I have little interest in fashion. whatevs.
I just see it as Hunger Games.

Tunnel Runway started, I believe, with the WNBA. Now the men are getting into it, and why shouldn't they? Athletes are tall and fit -- beautiful clothes hangers. I like it much more than seeing waifs who are models.

The white NFL fashion sense is flannel and shorts

Kyle Smith hot-takes:

Underage Chief's fan (go Chiefs!) dressed in warchief feather-bonnet: 👎
Greenbay Packers cheese-hat: 👍
Cheerleading outfits for every NFL team: 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

Thanks Mr. Smith for being a Living Gay Stereotype. But anyhoo, why not have a fashion editor, it may attract female fans. Which the NFL is always trying to do.

Dude1394 કહ્યું...

And I have no problem with that, none at all.

RideSpaceMountain કહ્યું...

Kate, above, is already sold.

mindnumbrobot કહ્યું...

This is why the Super Bowl needs to be one week after the Conference Championship games. 2-weeks leaves too much fill time for irrelevant stories.

Tattycoram કહ્યું...

I just want to point out there's another Kyle Smith in the public eye: he reviews films and plays for the Wall Street Journal and the New Criterion. He also served in the military (a lieutenant in the Gulf War) and is married.

Except offensive linemen and defensive tackles.

FullMoon કહ્યું...

Althouse once identified uniforms as "costumes" . Apt description for some opposing teams, and fun word to use after a few beers while watching the game with friends

Narr કહ્યું...

I'll definitely start watching now.

Kate કહ્યું...

Hawt is hawt, dude. And don't kick those defensive linemen to the curb. Not everyone likes skinny quarterbacks.

Another Kyle Smith is the head coach of the Stanford basketball team.

Paddy O કહ્યું...

I'm hoping they start spending most of the game doing heartwarming stories about the background of the players too. Only 30% of the actual game is shown but it expands the audience

I remember when Phil Sims was doing a Patriots game way back when. Belichick was wearing his rumpled hoodie with the sleeves cut off. Sims said "Now there's a guy who could use a little queer eye for the straight guy."

boatbuilder કહ્યું...

Since it's already scripted for the Chiefs to win, why not?
(Kidding--sort of--I'm just a Pats fan longing for the old days).

MayBee કહ્યું...

One of my favorite features! The fit posts of NFL players on twitter and instagram are great. Two years ago, Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson did a review of the tunnel walk looks of the players pre-Super Bowl and I loved it so much. So much better than the Oscars and Grammys. Those guys have so much fun, and they guys who aren’t into it? That’s fun too.

You have to be so careful with plaids.

He writes excellent reviews — I read them even if I don't care what he writing about.

Why can't the story be about a fashion guy rather than a GAY fashion guy?

RideSpaceMountain કહ્યું...

Because fashion is a gay-owned cartel. It's in their manual (Vanity Fair). Even the ladies have trouble breaking into the biz.

Lazarus કહ્યું...

Do not direct your hate mail at the Kyle Smith who writes for National Review and the New York Post. I could be wrong, but I do not think that he is the same guy.

It's been a slippery slope since Joe Namath appeared in a panty hose commercial, but football players can afford everything else, so why not a gay fashion consultant?

Namath probably does have a fashion consultant. That's why the fur coat he still wears makes him look like an Eskimo, rather than an elderly matron from Scarsdale.

Tunnel Runway started with pro boxing and pro wrestling, not the WNBA.

Well this guy Kyle can just go invent gay sports... or trans sports... I DON'T GIVE A SHIT.

Maybe they should spend the money on eyesight screening for their refs. Just saying.

Jaq કહ્યું...

Speaking of the WNBA, I just watched my first women's college basketball game, and the only thing I could think of is Robert Crumb must love this sport.

Fred Drinkwater કહ્યું...

Actual LOL upon reading "NFL has a fashion editor". Thanks, Althouse.

donald કહ્યું...

Teh ghey as fuck.

RideSpaceMountain કહ્યું...

Crumb loves him some thunder-thighs, I caught that reference!

Anthony કહ્યું...

College football players have been doing that for years, too. Now, of course, they can get paid for Whoever they're Wearing.

Valentine Smith કહ્યું...

So what publication does he actually edit?

Jupiter કહ્યું...

It's kind of cool when someone catches a long, long pass. They're all running around, and then they realize the ball is in the air, and start to jockey to get under it, and they all go up, and someone comes down with it. Kind of cool. It's disappointing when it's incomplete. But it wouldn't be impressive if there were no defense. Just two guys playing catch with a funny-shaped ball.

Jaq કહ્યું...

The Mississippi Indians, pre contact, used to play a sport where one guy would roll a stone shaped like a wheel as far as he could, and another guy would throw a spear and try to hit as closely as possible to where the stone ended up. They used to build stadiums to play this sport. I think that the Mound Builders played this sport, and there were still a few tribes that played it after contact in the Southeast. Anyway, it kind of seems like an abstract version of football.

Just one more reason why the NFL must die. And by, "die," I mean expire, end, exeunt, shuffle off this mortal coil, become an ex-parrot and go the way of the dodo bird.

BUMBLE BEE કહ્યું...

Yes, I remember Arnold Stang!

JIM કહ્યું...

I've seen some of the 'tunnel runway" fashion, unfortunately. Stop doing that. Seeing an NFL player carrying a purse is a WTF moment. And the WNBA is a total clown show.

The circuses need yet more novel gladiator acts in order to keep the plebs entertained.

As I lie awake in bed at odd hours of the night I like to contemplate just what percentage of the US economy is rooted in entertainment. It's nice that a market economy is able to monetize enjoyment and pleasures, and that such entertainments as we can find are not merely the province of the wealthy and powerful.

Fred Drinkwater કહ્યું...

But what about the beautiful plumage?

It died for me when they started that kneeling bullshit. Haven't watched a second of it since. Including the Super Bowl. Fuck 'em.

Being gay is headline-level important because ... ?

Mason G કહ્યું...

It's the NYT. You have to know he's gay so you know what to think about him.

LakeLevel કહ્યું...

Butkus just pawn in game of life.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

Why important? Because Mr. Smith is proud of being Gay. And the NFL is proud of having a Gay in a high paying position. And its a nice hook to the story, "Gay Guy doesn't like NFL Football, but he works for the NFL as a fashion editor".

It'd nice to see a survey of Gay sports watching. I'd guess it tracks to female attitudes. Stuff like Figure skating or soccer at the top, Football and boxing/combat sports at the bottom.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

Usually among Gay Film critics, Horror, Musicals, and Drama are at the top, Westerns. and action movies at the bottom. Crime movies are liked better when its Female Detectives or serial killers are involved, less when its macho cops like Dirty Harry or Sam Spade detective types.

walter કહ્યું...

Gotta allow max profiteering off it.

Lazarus કહ્યું...

Maybe the story isn't that he's gay, but that he's that kind of gay, rather than a macho bear who roots for the Lions or the Bears, but those guys are probably also in need of a queer eye for the gay guy when it comes to fashion sense.

JAORE કહ્યું...

whew. I was on the fence about watching the Super Bowl (Go Chiefs) until now. Knowing a gay (hey, did you know he's gay? Wow a man in the fashion profession is gay. Thunderstruck here.) man has such a position in the testosterone awash NFL has settled the issue.
Can I still eat our traditional hot wings during the game or is that a bit too butch?
