Someone needs to make a West Wing rewrite based on a President who wins a national mandate election to fight corruption in Washington DC and his battle with the corrupt institutions in the capitol.
Is it just me or does the ICC warrant for Netanyahu seem absurdly quaint? I immediately thought of a wing-collared League of Nations official issuing a stern rebuke to an Italian tank commander on the road to Addis Abba.
Leftists have a genius for wringing the credibility out of everything they touch.
Looks like those warheads hit at approximately Mach 12, based on taking the time it pierced the clouds to the time it hit the ground, which was about .5 seconds. The video will never be precise enough to give the exact speed. Anyway, nobody has anything that can intercept these. Certainly not the Patriot. There was another video of other hypersonic single warhead missiles hitting last night, and the Patriots had been launched, but they were a day late and a dollar short. But still you could follow the missiles in the video. These warheads were a lot faster, just appearing almost as beams of light.
Also it appears that an underground facility was hit and damaged, although how badly it was damaged is unknown, because it was cordoned off and surrounded by Ukrainian secret police. We will never be told about damage that happened, if it did, which seems likely. The missiles had no live warheads, but they would certainly travel a good way into the ground at that speed.
No video so far of the crash site of this other huge missile traveling at multiples of the speed of sound that the Ukrainians claim happened. Seems like a missile hitting the ground weighing 10,000 pounds or more, I don't know the exact figure, it's probably more, since the payload was 5,000 pounds, anyway, hitting the ground at mach 10 or so, would have been noticed. We would probably have seismograph data on such a hit, but I will keep looking for confirmation of that story. It could be true, after all.
Today I finished reading 2001 A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. When I first saw the film in college with my dormitory friends in the early 1970s, (we dropped some LSD first), I was amazed. Now I realize that the book is 10 times better than the movie, even without the psychedelics. Even though the movie was directed by Stanley Kubrick, the book is much more intense. The older I get, the more I think that all the books based on movies that I have watched are much better than the movies about the book. It almost makes me think that i should stop watching the movies. Get off my lawn!
When they changed the rules to get Putin, neither Ukraine, nor Russia was a signatory to the ICC "Treaty of Rome," all of a sudden Netanyahu fit too, and he was no more of a signatory to the Treaty of Rome than Putin was.
Half the world thought that the ICC was a laughingstock, Kyrgyzstan refused to arrest Putin, despite being a signatory, and Ukraine was demanding sanctions against that country, nobody who had actually signed that treaty cared, now the other half of the world knows it's a joke.
"We know the ICC is a farce... but it was *our* farce!" - The West
Clarke wrote the book concurrently with the production of the movie. I don't think it got much attention since a lot of people probably thought it was a novelization of the film. His sequel 2010: Odyssey Two is also a good read.
I see that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (a Democrat) has pledged to use the Denver police department “supported by 50,000 volunteers” to prevent ICE from deporting illegal immigrants, even Tren de Aragua members. I would like Constitution Law Professor Althouse to perhaps outline the range of responses Donald Trump and (presumed) Attorney General Pam Bondi can draw upon to respond. For instance, could Trump declare martial law in Denver (and perhaps neighboring Aurora)? Martial law seems pretty far out there, so are there a range of lesser actions he could undertake? For which of these actions would Trump’s administration need to coordinate with Congress?
Speaking of Pam Bondi, Fox News ran a tape of her telling an audience that Donald Trump does not appoint women because they are women — he appoints women because they are good. Damned right!
My goodness, something was hit. Here is video of the strike that holds on for an extra minute, when kaboom! Something went off, like maybe a bunker full of, well something highly explosive.
Remember that if the US had stayed out of Ukraine's business, Ukraine would be intact right now, millions would not have fled, hundreds of thousands would still be alive and uninjured, instead we escalating the conflict, maybe to a nuclear exchange, before Biden leaves office, is my bet of what is going on. At the very least we are trying to poison the well for any possible peace deal, because the vote of the American people means nothing to Joe Biden, just power.
It was originally an intriguing and effective short story titled “The Sentinel”. It lost a lot when Clarke expanded it into the bloated grandiosity of “2001”.
Well, I was high when I first saw the Gregory Peck Moby Dick movie. Didn't help my comprehension but it sure made the Pine-Sol commercials transparently ridiculous!
Rather than mess with gasoline STABIL treatments, I've started just throwing unused emergency generator gasoline out (i.e. pour it into the car) every six months. As part of dealing with spill proof spouts, I used a large flexible rubberized funnel and no spout, for the process. Curiously, this makes the whole thing spill proof, unlike dealing with the spouts which in addition keep you from emptying the cans into the car.
My husband and I were talking this morning as to how it feels like our country is in an abused spouse trying to leave situation. The abuser (Deep State, whatever you want to call them) is saying that if they can't have us, no one will. IYKWIM
I'd say he appoints them because they're women. He likes women. I haven't seen a good woman in that sort of job. But women vote and there you are, and how good to you have to be after all. The important thing is to pretend that you think the women are good. Women know it's a pretense but insist on it anyway.
You'll come out better from the start if you visit your local Murphy gas station, at your local Walmart. Check first, but they often have a 'no ethanol' pump there, somewhere. It's more expensive, but if you eliminate the water-attracting ethanol from your fuel, you won't have fuel problems, especially if you're also using things like Stabil. You'll eliminate varnish in your carburetion system.
I rotate out my stored gasoline after about 6-8 months also, even with the Stabil.

Yes, he did pick her. EXCEPT ... In his statement, Trump said he wants to return the DOJ to it's original job ... fighting crime, 10 most wanted, etc.
Now here's why that is BAD: The Democrats get in. They fire up the DOJ arresting Republicans. Republicans get in, return the DOJ to its previous job of arresting criminals ... and NEVER ARRESTING ANY DEMOCRATS.
Trump is FAILING to grasp this, as usual. He doesn't know how to FIGHT. He just knows how to get SHOT and ask US to do the fighting.
Something I appreciate about Trump: he takes risks. Appointing Matt Goetz was a risk. He quickly recalibrated, cut his losses, and took another risk with Pam Bondi.. In doing so, he is dominating the headlines, and behaving like a genuine leader. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet. His inauguration is two months away. And he is already the President of the United States. No one cares about Biden, or Kamala. They’re non-entities. Trump has accomplished more since he was elected than most people accomplish in a year.
And here's Jaq posing as a military expert again! He's been insisting that American soldiers must be in Ukraine firing the ATACMs at Russian targets, and firing PATRIOTs at Russian missiles, because Ukrainians couldn't possibly handle it. Here's what an actual veteran and expert on war in Ukraine and elsewhere has to say about that - hope you can handle the military slang (link): "FFS.... you impute a WGS map grid number you can read off any military map in the terminal in the cab... / brand new E1 privates can do it. no one is needed to do any 'special' work.." and provides a picture of the touchscreen in his next tweet.
Of course, Ukraine would be intact right now if Putin had stayed out of their business, but Jaq's the kind of imperialist ugly American who thinks all other countries are occupied by NPCs and everything that happens in them is America's fault.
As for the video with the extra minute, the replies to the tweet point out that secondary explosions would be expected to occur a lot sooner, and to throw a lot of crap in the air, so this just looks two more missiles arrived. In fact, there's so much light, it really looks like some kind of flare bombs (white phosphorus?) set off to illuminate the area. Assuming of course it's not photo-shopped, as Jaq always pretends it is when it's clear evidence of Russian war crimes.
Mike Johnston has called for local police to fight feds. That's an insurrection. That's a civil war. The a-hole democrat Soviet piece of shit also called for citizens to fight. The fight? Removing illegal criminals. Mike Johnston stands shoulder to shoulder with the same people who killed Laken Reily.
Casey concedes. R Senate - 4 pickups. Wow - did not think it would happen, but it did (Chuck Todd was right about the PA Senate race, for once). R's were not too far from 8 pickups. Oh well.
You are right, that target that Ukraine hit was very large, and available on maps that Ukrainians would have. So I take that back. Doesn't matter what I think, anyway. The Storm Shadows are a different story, which the US has admitted.
If the US hadn't overthrown the democratically elected government in Ukraine, and kicked off the civil war that is still ongoing, and then written a letter inviting Ukraine to join a military bloc that has been involved in many regime change wars, odd for a "defensive alliance," right on Russia's border, I am sure that Russia would have honored the Minsk agreements, you know, the ones Ukraine refused to honor.
Still waiting for that evidence that a second missile, weighing many tons, and traveling at mach 10, crashed somewhere in Ukraine short of its target. The Pentagon has confirmed that it had been warned through the nuke channels that a launch was going to happen, and yet the Pentagon never mentioned this second missile either. It almost seems like it was just a propaganda effort to minimize the effect of this display of a new technology.
Here is a test that they could use, if you can do this, you can use the ladies room! No clothes come off, no blood or urine test involved, just a simple body movement than women can do, and men can't.
Stop misrepresenting things, you filthy son of a bitch. I said I had read that there may (may!) have been a second missile fired, and in fact a lot of people are saying that, but no one even claims to be sure. Some say it crashed (if it even existed) in Russia, some in Ukraine. You demand that the Ukrainians show the crash site, having conveniently forgotten that large stretches of Ukraine are currently occupied by Russians, so if it fell there they wouldn't have access. Duh! Try to think before you write!
And stop talking about the "democratically elected government in Ukraine". The fact is that many tyrants - Hitler, Mussolini, Arafat, Mugabe, for instance - were freely elected and turned into tyrants. Yanukovych was one of them. Have you forgotten that he locked up the woman who ran against him for refusing to concede? That he accumulated billions in wealth without every holding a job in the private sector, using his relatives to loot every business of any size in the country? That he slaughtered peaceful demonstrators in the streets? That he was not in fact "overthrown", but voluntarily fled the capital, and then the country, when he realized that everyone hated him for his murders, robberies, lies, and treason? That he didn't retire to the South of France, like an ordinary retired dictator, but has been hanging out with Putin ever since, like a common traitor? That after he fled (like James II of England), he was constitutionally removed from office by the Ukrainian parliament? You know nothing of the Ukrainian revolution of 2014, which a few Americans tried to jump on as a bandwagon, but which was in fact entirely accomplished by the Ukrainian people. Do you think the American Revolution was an evil plot by Louis XVI against the colonial governors of America, and all the American patriots just patsies? Again, you treat Ukrainians as NPCs, like an arrogant American swine.
If you want good legal reasoning and you are on X Leslie McAdoo Gordon is a great follow. She just retired and she practiced in the federal court system. She will always quote statutes if possible. Her comment today about the yahoo from Colorado states what he can and can not do and what those “citizen volunteers” better not do. According to statute and case law.
Yeah, that yahoo Kim Foxx had already agreed to a relinquishing of his $10,000 bail and community service in some kind of plea bargain that he didn’t have to admit guilt. The special prosecutor that came in after that and tried the case in front of a jury where they found him guilty was considered double jeopardy. So that was thrown out.
My IANAL summary is that Foxx was smart to not simply drop the charges. She had Smollett forfeit his bond ($10,000) and perform 16 hours of community service in exchange for halting prosecution. Because he fulfilled his portion of the agreement with her, the second attempt to prosecute him with the same charges was akin to double jeopardy. If she had simply dropped the charges with no quid pro quo, a second prosecutor could have charged him.
Dixcus spends half his/her time glooming and dooming and painting the picture as absolutely hopeless and the other half of his/her time exhorting others to violence.
Folks, yes, it looks "insurrectionary" to me, too. But! First, does the Constitution define the set of actions that legally constitute insurrection, or treason, if you'd rather. And, again, what range of responses does a President of the United States have to drawn upon. I'd like to think he can do more than sit on a sofa in the Oval Office, wring his hands, and say "Oh dear!"
Mayorkas is seeking a pardon from Biden. Both he and Wray refused to meet with Senators today. Both got a blistering rebuke from both Republicans and Democrats on the committee.
X is now 50/50 democrats/republicans, as opposed to 66/33 democrats before Musk bought it. Combination, I imagine, of repubs not being censored and dems self-deporting. What is it about the tender dears that they can't handle even the idea that someone has a different opinion?
Over at Instapundit Glenn Reynolds links to an article by Zachery Faria that raises an important question. Just how much do the newspapers pay their reporters thst none of them thought inflation was much of an issue?. We know that the talking heads on TV earn millions but beat reporters?
Google says no! We know Mayorkas went through an impeachment proceeding, and he's willfully been in contempt of Congress. So Biden could pardon him for that. He could also pardon him for crimes he did under Biden's orders.
Ford gave Nixon a blanket pardon, even though Nixon hadn't been charged with any crimes.
Trump is not using the FBI to vet any of his appointees.
Zero trust!
He's going with private background checks instead. The stated reason is the FBI is too slow. The unstated reason is the FBI is filled with blackguards and partisan hacks.
Defund the (federal) police!
Like the KGB, the FBI is going to have to change their name. Your days of spying on the American people might be coming to an end.
Tell us again how you assholes spied on Martin Luther King!
Do you trust these assholes to monitor your phones? If the FBI dissolved tomorrow, would crime go up? Homeland Security is the doing the important anti-terrorism work. What are you fuckers doing over at the FBI?
Who needs Biden's storm troopers?.
I think it's illegal to interfere in elections, FBI. The Biden scandals are on par with Watergate. The four fraudulent criminal indictments against a former and future president are far worse than Watergate. It's time to shrink the government, boys. Shrink it, shrink it, and shrink it some more!
George @BehizyTweets Patrick Bet-David NAILED IT. President Trump didn't just beat Kamala Harris. He also demolished Barack Obama's legacy forever.

and, of course

The Graduate Rear Window Dr. Strangelove Bang the Drum Slowly The Lady Vanishes Apocalypse Now To Catch a Thief Pride and Prejudice Shoot the Piano Player Rashomon (I'm guessing on that one)
After rereading the LI post, I don't think it's double jeopardy at all. It's more contract law. Smollett did the things the deal requested he do. Since he upheld his end of the deal, the state can't unilaterally say the deal was too good and prosecute him anyway. Probably a good ruling overall. I don't think we want to give new prosecutors the ability to renege on any prior plea deal they dislike, unlike decisions not to prosecute.
"A Democratic election official in Pennsylvania offered an impassioned apology Wednesday for claiming “precedent by a court doesn’t matter anymore in this country” to justify counting about 600 faulty ballots in defiance of state Supreme Court rulings.
“The passion in my heart got the best of me and I apologize again for that,” Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia said in front of a fiery crowd at a county meeting.
“I made a mistake, and because I am an elected official, I am held to a far higher standard than everybody else. So, to the citizens I serve, I apologize, and I will continue to work hard for you and endeavor to not make such a mistake again.”
Ellis-Marseglia said she received expletive-laden criticism and death threats following her prior comments. She also said other county employees have been flooded with threats.
Throughout her apology, the packed room – which included many supporters of President-elect Donald Trump – heckled Ellis-Marseglia, and some held up signs that said “tyrant.” Others called for her resignation and prosecution and accused her of trying to count illegal votes to help Democrats hold onto a US Senate seat.
Her prior comments about flouting court precedent took off on social media and were promoted widely by Trump allies like Elon Musk.
Ellis-Marseglia and another Democrat on the three-member panel voted to count misdated mail ballots and unsigned provisional ballots, over the objections of the lone GOP commissioner, the county’s attorney, and in defiance of the state’s top court, which ruled before the election that ballots with these deficiencies are invalid.
This is unfolding amid a closely watched recount in the state’s US Senate race between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican Dave McCormick, who leads by about 17,000 votes. CNN has not made a projection in that race."
More at the link, but it's all moot now as Bob Casey has conceded.

Did you watch Casey's message? Son-of-a-bitch talks like he thinks he' doing everyone a favor.
Not Enough F U's for the Nazi Left.
The men cannot place their knees more forward like the females?

This from Legal Insurrection seems to be a pretty reasonable explanation.

Hmmmm.......
double jeopardy interrupted?
nice
FJB looks oxygen deprived
Folks, yes, it looks "insurrectionary" to me, too. But! First, does the Constitution define the set of actions that legally constitute insurrection, or treason, if you'd rather. And, again, what range of responses does a President of the United States have to drawn upon. I'd like to think he can do more than sit on a sofa in the Oval Office, wring his hands, and say "Oh dear!"
Mayorkas is seeking a pardon from Biden. Both he and Wray refused to meet with Senators today. Both got a blistering rebuke from both Republicans and Democrats on the committee.
A pardon for what? Wouldn't he have to be at least indicted first?
Steelers Browns game tonight is in a blizzard. Good fun.

Uh oh.
LLR-democratical Rich, Dumb Lefty Mark, Field Marshall Freder and readering's Delaware Chancery Court Heroes hardest hit.
Who the fuck needs you to spy on the PTA?
We know you hate pro-lifers!
Americans are right to be suspicious.

Patrick Bet-David NAILED IT. President Trump didn't just beat Kamala Harris. He also demolished Barack Obama's legacy forever.

I bet Obama spontaneously screams in agony & regret for saying what he said to Trump at that White House dinner. It was the fuel Trump needed.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra cannot answer why he placed unaccompanied children with sponsors whose address was a strip club.
He also cannot explain why he allowed them to be pimped out by individuals with no family ties to them.
This is a sickening failure of oversight.

It sounds to me like we should practice a little "catch and release" with the city of Denver.
It's nice that some places volunteer to be sanctuary cities.
He's not so much a mayor as a fantasy fanboy who imagines Denver as the next Tiananmen Square.
How many illegals does Denver want, sir?

After rereading the LI post, I don't think it's double jeopardy at all. It's more contract law. Smollett did the things the deal requested he do. Since he upheld his end of the deal, the state can't unilaterally say the deal was too good and prosecute him anyway. Probably a good ruling overall. I don't think we want to give new prosecutors the ability to renege on any prior plea deal they dislike, unlike decisions not to prosecute.
"That after he fled (like James II of England), he was constitutionally removed from office by the Ukrainian parliament? "
You mean after he was driven out by force, his motorcade fired on by Maidan not sees? Sounds real democratic.
Mark Twain hated Jane Austen. Rex Stout loved Jane Austen. And I can't read Jane Austen. But the movies based on her books are fantastic.
Pennsylvania Democratic official apologizes for comments about ignoring election laws (CNN)
Starmer just nationalized the British railroads. Why? I lived in the UK for about a year, and the trains were one of the best things about that country. Almost always on time, and clean and a quick way to get around.

“The older I get, the more I think that all the books based on movies that I have watched are much better than the movies about the book.”
When Dune came out in 1984, a friend quipped that to understand the movie, you have to read the book; but if you read the book you will really hate the movie adaptation.
Saint Croix said…
“Pride and Prejudice…”
Better than the book? My wife asked me to give you the mal occhio for that one.
You don't have to read the book to hate Lynch's version! Unwatchable.
The recent version of Dune is really good, though.
Rocco, your wife is probably right! I can't read those books. But the movies based on those books make me love those books from afar.
