October 2, 2024

It felt like an imitation of Kamala Harris's "I grew up a middle-class kid" — Tim Walz began his answer with "I grew up in small, rural Nebraska, town of 400."

The moderator, Margaret Brennan, purporting to delve into "personal qualifications" — that is, character — asked Tim Walz to explain why he said he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests when, in fact, he was not.

Here's the transcript of the full debate. Walz answered:
Well, and to the folks out there who didn't get at the top of this, look...

That "look" makes me feel as though I'm being chastised for not paying attention. Am I one of the "the folks out there who didn't get at the top of this"? What does that even mean? "At the top of" what? "Get at the top"? Did he mean those who didn't watch — get in on — the debate from the beginning? Anyway, that sets up this:

... I grew up in small, rural Nebraska, town of 400. Town that you rode your bike with your buddies till the streetlights come on, and I'm proud of that service.

That's like Harris's "grew up in the middle-class" safe space. Instead of answering the question asked, he goes back to a snapshot of his youth. Somehow he's "proud of that service." The service of riding your bike around until it got dark. Much as I'd love to see the kids of America riding their bikes around and I'd be willing to regard them as performing a "service" if it would help, Tim Walz was just deflecting the question and doing so in a way that reminded me of all the times Harris deflected questions by directing us toward a picture of her as a child. Walz's picture is at least a happy one.

He continues with his quick biography and it does eventually bring us to China:

I joined the National Guard at 17, worked on family farms, and then I used the GI bill to become a teacher. Passionate about it, a young teacher. My first year out, I got the opportunity in the summer of 89 to travel to China, 35 years ago, be able to do that. I came back home and then started a program to take young people there. We would take basketball teams, we would take baseball teams, we would take dancers, and we would go back and forth to China. The issue for that was, was to try and learn. Now, look, my community knows who I am.

But you're imposing yourself on us, the larger community. You're saying "look" again, making me feel as though I'm wrong to be listening with the hope of receiving an answer.

They saw where I was at. They, look, I will be the first to tell you I have poured my heart into my community.

Gah! He said "look" again. "Look" is his tell. I'm going to search the whole transcript for "look" but let's get through this evasion. I'm still waiting for the answer.

I've tried to do the best I can, but I've not been perfect. And I'm a knucklehead at times, but it's always been about that.

About what? About your being "a knucklehead at times"?

Those same people elected me to Congress for twelve years. And in Congress I was one of the most bipartisan people. Working on things like farm bills that we got done, working on veterans benefits. And then the people of Minnesota were able to elect me to governor twice. So look...

He said "look" again!

... my commitment has been from the beginning, to make sure that I'm there for the people, to make sure that I get this right. I will say more than anything, many times, I will talk a lot. I will get caught up in the rhetoric. But being there, the impact it made, the difference it made in my life. I learned a lot about China.

Just say you were wrong about being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests. Why is that so hard? You went so far as to call yourself "a knucklehead" and to say you "talk a lot" and "get caught up in the rhetoric." Why not say you were wrong about the one thing the question is about? Is it because you're a blabbermouth knucklehead caught up in the rhetoric?

I hear the critiques of this.

Critiques of what?

I would make the case that Donald Trump should have come on one of those trips with us.

I assume you mean critiques about taking so many trips to China. That wasn't the question, but now that you mention it, why haven't you given a reason why you went to China so many times? I really don't understand.

I guarantee you he wouldn't be praising Xi Jinping about COVID. And I guarantee you he wouldn't start a trade war that he ends up losing. So this is about trying to understand the world.

I'm having a hard enough time trying to understand you, but yeah, it's hard to understand China. What did you do in China that's relevant to understanding Xi Jinping? I have no idea.

It's about trying to do the best you can for your community, and then it's putting yourself out there and letting your folks understand what it is.

He's letting us understand.

My commitment, whether it be through teaching, which I was good at...

I'd like to hear more about that. Is there some kind of idea of letting the students understand?

... or whether it was being a good soldier or was being a good member of Congress, those are the things that I think are the values that people care about.

I think that means the people — as he sees it — don't care about whether he was right or wrong about being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests. That's probably true, but you didn't say that straightforwardly, and I think "the values that people care about" do include being straightforward answering questions and not throwing up a smokescreen of evasion.

Why did he struggle so much with this question? Why does Kamala Harris struggle so much with all the questions that trigger her "grew up a middle-class kid" response? Why the retreat to childhood?

It's a classic dodge, changing the subject away from something that is immediately uncomfortable, to evoke childhood, because it implies innocence and, more importantly, a world full of no consequences.

1) Walz said the line about riding bikes in his small home town.
2) Walz said, "and I'm proud of that service."
3) Walz said, "I joined the National Guard at 17"

It's like line 2 and line 3 got reversed. The normal way would been to have said, I joined the National Guard at 17 and I'm proud of that service.
It's the kind of error you'd expect to see if there was a problem with a teleprompter or a script. I guess he had memorized the little bio and forgot the National Guard line, then corrected himself. It'd be paranoid to suggest the guy coaching him via a tiny earpiece was talking to fast.
Walz was nervous and he flubbed his intro line. I think he was very uncomfortable raising the issue of his military service. He was afraid of what Vance might do with it.

Gusty Winds said...

Just say you were wrong about being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests. Why is that so hard? It's hard because is an unnecessary fabrication. Walz did the same thing with his "weapons of war" stories suggesting he saw combat.

Walz learned the value of propaganda in China. He also learned the "value" of censorship which is used to promote propaganda.

It's nothing you can teach. You have to be able to believe in the moment you are telling the truth.

This is why Harris sounded so different in that clip from four or five years ago talking about radical gun control measures. She's lying now but more importantly she knows she's lying so she has to filter every word she says to avoid slipping.

Walz has the believe in the moment thing down but like an idiot he lies about easily checkable stuff He's too used to having a compliant media never press him on his puffery.

Breezy said...

I’m curious about where this opportunity came from.

Bob Boyd said...

I observed that whenever Vance began speaking, Walz, on the split screen, would look intently at Vance for a minute, then he would look down at his podium as though he was making notes. He would continue looking down, seeming to write, for a long time. Was he making notes for a rebuttle? Or was it an act. He never seemed to come back to anything Vance had said, so what was he making these extensive notes for? Or was he actually reading the notes he came with, trying to freshen his memory of his prepared arguments?
It would be paranoid to suggest he was listening to his coach on a tiny earpiece.
Walz seemed very nervous and uncomfortable. Vance seemed relaxed and much more in his element. He seemed to be enjoying the whole thing.

Dogma and Pony Show said...

People are focusing on how stupid Walz sounded. The big takeaway for me was that he not only failed to demonize his opponent (which is truly Job 1 for any dem), he gave off the vibe that he thinks JD is a good, sincere, well-meaning guy with whom he actually agrees on a lot of issues.

The dems will forgive Walz for being befuddled and inarticulate. They will NEVER forgive him for treating Vance as a decent human being.

Quaestor said...

Talking heads often pontificate on the subject of running mate debates --- "Look, Megyn, these debates are interesting but unimportant...yaddah, yaddah, yaddah." That may have been true in the recent past, but it is a fundamental fallacy to assume that history always repeat itself.

In both cases the top of the ticket may be vulnerable. Harris may be a bit young for a dementia patient, but she certainly talks like one, or maybe she's just natively stupid. What do I know? At any rate, if Quaestor was dumb enough to consider voting for her, he'd be much happier knowing her Veep had some substantial smarts to help her in a crisis (in Kamala's case breakfast is a formidable crisis) or replace her if she accidentally electrocutes herself with a blowdryer. Last night would make him long for a relief pitcher with a wicked fastball because Walz is 3 and Oh with the bases loaded.

In the GOP camp, Trump is 78 and a target of demented Democrats, i.e. most of them. (Something needs to be done, this violent trend is as old as the party itself. Their first president shot at his critics from inside the White House.) Vance has laid any concern among Republicans about Trump's age or his target status well and truly to rest.

Conclusion: this Veep debate was not only consequential, it may have been decisive.

I tried to count how many times Walz said "look." It was hard because JDV said it to. It's a pervasive vocal mannerism. I can say Walz said it at least 20 times.

In my experience in the Midwest — mostly Wisconsin in the last 40 years — the use of "look" like that is considered harsh. I knew a lawprof from New York, who, back in the 1980s, got criticized on student evaluations for beginning answers to their questions with "Look..." They told him it made them feel bad and he took to telling them, in advance, that he said "Look" because that's his New York way of speaking. He didn't want to give up his personal style, but he knew it wasn't liked in the Midwest.

I'd say that we recognize that politicians' self-narratives are all nonsense, but last time "Scranton versus Wall Street" may have gotten past enough people's BS detectors to sink down into their subconscious to make a difference. The narratives have been around a long time -- "I cannot tell a lie," "born in a log cabin" -- but in an earlier America there was some hardship or adversity, or challenge behind them. Now they're a way for people whose lives for the last few decades have been radically different from those of most Americans to pretend to be "just like you."

The debates don't matter. The policies don't matter. Only the mail in ballot vote harvesting matters. Get with the program, folks, because the election is going to Harris by however many mail in ballots it takes.

Professor, I don't understand what you mean about being "right or wrong" about being in Tiananmen Square at the time of the massacre. That's not something one simply misspeaks about. He knows he was there or not. It's not being right or wrong. It's either a lie or it isn't.

Because you've made so many trips to China you can't remember if you were or weren't there on the specified day, and it'll be easier to obfuscate about which Asian country you were in than if you were in the US or not.

I'm with Jersey (though also from the Midwest). I think starting a statement with "look" is pretty much universally viewed as at best condescending unless it's followed by "over there"

Question: "Does Walz look more like Don Rickles or Mel Brooks?"

Answer: Neither. More like an age-wilted Pee-Wee Herman.

Look, ;), tens of millions of people think Trump won the 2020 election, myself included. It’s simply bullying behavior to ask people this question about who won or who lost, essentially trying to force them to say something they truly don’t believe. No one actually knows the answer! The left needs to accept the fact that millions of people did not witness election integrity that week, they are disgusted by it, and don’t want to be bullied about it.

There is NO evidence that Trump won the election. Isn’t it time to come to grips with that? What purpose does keeping the Big Lie alive that so devastated so many lives of the poor people who believed it and are now sitting in jail, their lives in ruin. “Stop the Steal” was a scam and Trump has been sowing the seeds to revive it for when he loses the election again.

As far as bullying goes, it’s bullying to continue to expect the rest of us to give credence to the Big Lie and the purpose for the big lie which is obvious if you have your eyes open.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Starting off with "Look" is the equivalent to saying "Hey listen up" or "Pay attention dummy" and both guys should be trained and retrained to avoid it like the plague.

his "look" appears to be similar to Biden's "no really!" - it is a tell that the next thing coming out of his mouth will be bullshit.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

I think psychologically it indicates far worse, that both men are so insecure in themselves that they've trained themselves to always embellish, always present the false self/fake life in order to impress other people. Every single veteran I know said Walz service was highly honorable, but his presentation of the fake Tim who was a CSM and "carried guns in combat" and wears SF gear is absolutely disqualifying and makes people cringe. Both men know they've been caught and can't stop exaggerating their achievements.

"There is NO evidence that Trump won the election," says Inga without evidence.

There are at least a quarter million non-citizens in Arizona who are currently approved to vote illegally in the upcoming election. The Democrat-controlled Arizona board of elections is blaming a "computer glitch" for this situation without evidence. It is just as likely they were perpetrating the same fraud used in 2020, only this time they were caught red-handed and forced to invent a lame "I didn't know it was loaded" excuse.

If Arizona could do it, so could all the other Democrat-controlled states

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Yes what makes a man insert himself into historical situations like that -- or say, helping Golda Meir win the 6-day war -- when it is easily proved that they were NOT there? Better yet, what makes Democrats keep nominating these guys who are living a crazy fake life in their heads instead of being in the moment, doing the actual job they are hired to do? Further, why is it guys who have inordinately large numbers of trips to communist China? Will the real Tim and Joe please stand up?

People like Inga are perfectly content to demand that Trump prove he was never inside or even near Bergdorf's since the Dawn of Time to relieve him of that rape accusation. So why should anyone require proof of election fraud in 2020. Let the Democrats prove their honesty and lawfulness for once.

Just say you were wrong about being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests. Why is that so hard?

Because the correct answer is "I lied".

Which then leads to the next question: why did he lie about that?

Why did the guy who got married on the 5th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre because that date was a "date he'd remember" lie about being in Hong Kong?

Could it be because he supported the massacre because he's a devote Maoist?

Why yes, it could.

Is that something that's a loser with the voters?

Why yes, it is

That's because they don't have good answers.

"I lied, about that and everything else", is true for Waltz, but not a good answer.

"I want to be President, and ride around in processions. I don't want to actually do any work, or think of judge anything, I'll leave that to the same people who've been running things for the last 3 1/2 years", is true for Harris, but not a good answer.

Good point The unstated assumption in the question is that the NPV total is more important than the Electoral College, and Biden's 81 million votes generated mostly by his over performance in California and New York should cancel out the fact that he won the Electoral College by about 40K votes in three states, a much more auditable figure.

What purpose is there to ask people about who won or lost 2020 at this point?

People get to believe what they believe. This bullying question only hardens people’s belief in what they believe. No one’s mind is changed by these won or lost false statements. I’m not asking nor expecting you to believe what I believe. Far from it. Just pointing out that that question is a bullying tactic, especially given all the unknowns regarding that election.

Pauligon59 said...

"look" is commonly used as a filler word (see: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filler_(linguistics) ) like, "uh", "er", "like", etc. As other's have said here, public speakers get training and coaching on how to avoid using filler words. I vaguely recall seeing a movie with James Cagney prefixing (or maybe it was sufficing) sentences with "See".

Occasional use of fillers is ok but excessive use can cause listeners to think you are not smart or at least not articulate.

Do you really want your VP to have the appearance of being inarticulate or dumb?

I thought the more relevant lie by Tim Walz' was the "weapons of war" have no place in America, which he contexed by claiming to have served in Iraq during the Iraq War. The Tiananmen lie is not that egregious to me. But Stolen Valor is a huge problem that the "Mod's" from CBS chose to ignore. That speaks volumes about his character. Which is why they memory hole it.

I don't know, but I recall in the 1990's and early 2000's it seems like I knew a lot of people in the education field who would take students on field trips to China. They would go once a year, usually, with different groups of students, for cultural exchange purposes. I think, in retrospect, those were probably projects encouraged by Chinese government front organizations such as The China International Culture Exchange Center.

Who won the 2016 election? Trump of course. Clinton conceded the victory in a phone call the same night or next day. Did Clinton start a “Stop the Steal” con job like Trump did?

Umm. Clinton is no saint - she unleashed the 2.5 year long Russian Collusion con job on all of us because she lost that election. That was far more damaging to Trump’s presidency and to our entire nation. She conceded in words but not in deeds.

“ What purpose is there to ask people about who won or lost 2020 at this point?”

Is this a serious question? Isn’t it important enough that the person who is running for VP tell the truth about the 2020 election? Why perpetuate the Big Lie unless they are trying to set up another Big Lie when Trump loses again? It’s not bullying to expect the truth in something as IMPORTANT as false allegations of election cheating and trying to take away the vote of 81 million people, as Trump did. So much attention and nitpicking over small untruths and exaggerations while completely falling for the Big Lie. Trump lost and that is the Big Truth.

It is an obsession with the left that you mouth their "truths". I don't think they particularly care if you believe it, in fact it's even better if you don't (you're right, it's bullying).

There is NO evidence that Trump won the election.

Again, until you can explain why five swing states stopped counting ballots - all at the same time - sent the poll watchers home, resumed counting under the cover of darkness and then miraculously had Biden ahead three hours later when they updated the totals, that election will always stink.

And you fucking know it.

Breezy said...

“It’s not bullying to expect the truth in something as IMPORTANT as false allegations of election cheating and trying to take away the vote of 81 million people, as Trump did.”

You’re talking about what you believe to be true. That is not what I believe to be true. Millions agree with you, and millions agree with me. That’s life. We don’t have to harangue each other until the other side relents. That’s a “fool’s errand”, I think.

Inga said...

Breezy, tell me, if it’s true that Trump won the 2020 election, why didn’t Vance proudly and strongly answer Walz’s question by exclaiming “Trump of course!” Why did Vance not answer the question, hmmmm?

Sometimes when we grow up we recognize that it’s irrational to cling to fairy tales.

According to Wikipedia, he was in the Texas NG when at the Univ. of Houston right out of HS, then in the Arkansas NG while working in a factory in AR, then in the Nebraska NG while getting his degree and afterwards, then the MN NG after he moved there. Doesn't sound like the GI Bill was involved. Did he mix his bio up with Vance's?

Deep State Reformer said...

Where Walz grew up is completely irrelevant to his candidacy. Solid blue San Francisco and New York City both have a small number of right-wing conservatives living right there amongst them and apparently in small red towns in Nebraska there are a few crazed Wreckers as well. But SFW? I have a state senator that every single time you ask her about anything the slightest bit controversial she mentions the fact that even though she's a left-wing kook she grew up in a farm family in rural Michigan, and so I can trust her to do the right thing. Yah. But no. A candidate's birthplace doesn't matter one bit. How the hell are peeps fooled by that approach?

Breezy said...

Because it’s not relevant to today’s electoral priorities. It’s a meaningless distraction, a red herring. Focus needs to be on the economy, immigration, crime, energy, foreign policy etc. No one cares about J6 in the grand scheme of 2024. Well, the people who want to distract us from the priorities care about it, but no one else does.

Joanne Jacobs said...

Walz moved to a small Nebraska town with 400 people in his sophomore year in high school, according to a WashPost bio. He grew up in a small, but not that small, town where his father was school superintendent. Most of his lies are petty exaggerations. Why bother?
