My cashier at the Superlo this afternoon was one of the few pretty employees, but she affects a semi-gothic look and demeanor. Today she had applied, with exquisite artistry, a sickly light green base or undertone of makeup to her face.

Not Morticia Adams or scifi alien green, but the sort of color I wouldn't be surprised to see on a victim of scurvy, or a rare disease of the spleen.

The Brots are doing the opposite of the J6 prosecutors with the current rioters. I’ve been watching Sky News.

Rather than arresting and letting the guys rot for months, they have arrested, made plea offers the guys couldnt refuse, got the pleas, AND issued sentences. I watched live today as a guy was sentenced for something he did on July 31.

And the sentences are pretty substantial, even though Home Office policynin reaction to prison overcrowding means you will only serve about half sour sentence. Today’s guy got 8 months for screaming racial taunts, which means he’ll do 4. Another guyngot 30 months (really 15) for inciting peoplemover the internet to throw rocks at a migrant hotel.

Yeah, I think the taunt screamer shouldnz’t be guilty of any crime. The stoning inciter, maybe.

And the Director of Public Prosecutions is going after bothnsides. Two Asians got sentenced for running into a white demonstration and starting a punch-up. And a black Labour politician is getting done for saying the white demonstrators’ throats should be slashed.

A very different philosophy from here. Shows the government’s desperation.

Perseid meteor shower 2024: when, where and how to see it

"The Perseid meteor shower, commonly known as the Perseids, is visible annually from mid-July to late August. Although the moon will be 50% illuminated during the peak of the Perseids this year, it will set around midnight, providing dark skies until dawn — ideal for meteor watching!"

"If you're unable to hunt for Perseids in person you can watch the Perseid meteor shower online for free this weekend courtesy of astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project. The first livestream will begin at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 11 (0100 GMT on Aug. 12,) and the second will begin at 9 p.m. EDT on Aug. 12 (0100 GMT on Aug. 13.), weather permitting."

I did two all-night observing sessions at a dark site, last Friday and last Tuesday. Saw some nice Perseids.

About 40% of New Soviet Democraticals STILL believe Trump faked being shot.

In all honesty, I would have thought that number was higher given the 10 years of lunatic conspiracy theories pushed here at Althouse blog by Inga and others.

"Nearly a week ago, we ran a bombshell piece based on the DHS’ Office of Inspector General (OIG) Report that turned out to confirm numerous aspects of our ground-breaking coverage on the January 6 pipe bomb hoax, including new information indicating that Kamala Harris’ own Secret Service detail at the very least participated in a cover-up of this hoax.
Amazingly, the media has responded to the release of this report with near total silence, a near complete blacklist of coverage. In fact, the media blackout is so startling that one wonders why DHS head Mayorkas bothered suppressing the report for so long in the first place. "

Snopes tries, really hard, to debunk Tim Walz Signed Law Protecting Pedophiles from Discrimination" claim.

Here's their version:

"The bill in question was an amendment to the state's civil rights law that edited the definition of "sexual orientation" to remove the inclusion of identities "not traditionally associated with one’s biological male or female traits." Several legal scholars noted that the law did not protect pedophiles from discrimination. [?]

The claim was not new. The piece of legislation in question, H.F. 1655, was an amendment to a larger bill called the Take Pride Act, which enshrined the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Minnesota's human rights law. It was passed in May 2023 and was criticized then on the same grounds.

However, when Snopes researched the amendment by using publicly available documentation from the Minnesota state legislature, we discovered that the claim was false. The bill was real, and Walz did sign it into law, but it did not protect pedophiles from discrimination. When the claim was shared on X, the context that would have made this clear was omitted.

What the Bill Actually Did
The Take Pride Act included provisions that outlawed discriminating against people based on "gender identity" and "sexual orientation." In order for the law to be enforceable, the bill's authors included definitions of those two terms. For the purposes of this claim, only the definition of "sexual orientation" is relevant. This is how that definition read when Walz signed the Take Pride Act into law in May 2023:

Subd. 44. Sexual orientation.
"Sexual orientation" means to whom someone is, or is perceived of as being, emotionally, physically, or sexually attracted to based on sex or gender identity. A person may be attracted to men, women, both, neither, or to people who are genderqueer, androgynous, or have other gender identities. [emphasis added by yours truly]

However, it took the state legislature time to create this definition, and the exact wording of the definition was edited significantly from its original text. Take, for instance, this previous version (emphasis ours):

Subd. 44. Sexual orientation.
"Sexual orientation" means having or being perceived as having an emotional, physical, or sexual attachment to another person without regard to the sex of that person or having or being perceived as having an orientation for such attachment, or having or being perceived as having a self-image or identity not traditionally associated with one's biological maleness or femaleness. "Sexual orientation" does not include a physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult. [bolded text was stricken from the final version, signed by Walz.]

"Finke's amendment removed the last half of the definition, which included the line referring to "a physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult."

Sexual orientation is defined based on people's attachment to people dependent on the sex of that person, not the age of that person. As such, the line about "a physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult" was irrelevant to the definition.

The Minnesota House Research Department created a summary of the amendment that concisely explained this point. That summary said the amendment "removes language from the existing definition of 'sexual orientation' that included having or being perceived as having an identity not traditionally associated with one's biological male or female traits."

No Protection for Pedophiles
In a previous fact-check on the same topic from PolitiFact, published in May 2023 when Walz signed the Take Pride Act, legal experts confirmed that the law would not protect pedophiles from discrimination in any way.

"No court in the country has or would ever say that a law protecting people from discrimination based on their sexual orientation extends to protecting pedophilia," Brian Soucek, a law professor at the University of California, Davis, told PolitiFact.

Essentially, while the amendment in question removed a reference to "a physical or sexual attachment to children by an adult," it did so in order to remove unnecessary text. Walz did sign the Take Pride Act into law, but had nothing to do with protecting pedophiles.
"

How on earth was the removed text "unnecessary?" I submit that pedophilia can very easily be categorized as just another gender identity.

The Governor has line item veto in MN, but only with regard to appropriations. The Legislature took it upon itself to omit the above provision, and Walz cooperated by signing it into law.

The ZeroHedge story has a lie in the very first paragraph, where it says that the Ukrainians "are currently using American weapons to attack Russian territory, troops, civilians, and infrastructure". They are not in fact attacking civilians: one local was even seen on TeleGram (via Twitter) surprised that the troops just drove through her small town without knocking on any doors. That's one reason they're advancing so fast: they don't stop in every town to steal the washing machines and toilets (they have plenty of those at home) and rape all the women and girls, they keep going to the battle. (Of course, they should and no doubt will be knocking on doors now and then to search for Russian soldiers hiding behind civilians.) And the only infrastructure they're destroying is military or dual-use, e.g. railroads and power-lines. Even when they blew up a convoy of 19 truckloads of troops in Kursk oblast, you could see on the videos that the nearby houses were all unharmed except for a few broken windows.
Anyone who believes anything ZeroHedge says about Ukraine is a fool. And anyone who pretends to be concerned about soldiers attacking civilians and does not mention that just yesterday a Russian missile killed 14 and wounded 43 more in a crowded supermarket is a contemptible human being. One side kills civilians as a matter of policy, the other doesn't.
