The NYT reports. The convention began as the stream of good news for Mr. Trump turned into a torrent. Already lifted by what some supporters call a miraculous intervention during the shooting... the former president was handed an unexpected gift on Monday. A judge he appointed, Aileen Cannon, flouted decades of precedent to dismiss in its entirety the [documents] case...
The veepstakes is down to three: Mr. Vance, Mr. Rubio, and Mr. Burgum. Mr. Trump told Bret Baier of Fox News that he would announce his choice on Monday but did not say when. Trump campaign officials had envisioned a grand entrance for the former president on the first night, with his pick joining him on the stage for a big reveal. But the pick might be announced during the day instead....

Wendy- my parents lived in AK inn2008. They knew Palin was the pick when the Secret Service showed up.
Unless they plan some work-around, it's not going to be Rubio (IMO). I can't see how they can give up 30 electoral votes.
Burgum doesn't get him much in electoral votes. At least he's an ND native tech bro, unlike Montana's tech bro governor.
Vance seems so new...would he even help at all in Ohio?
Has anyone mentioned Thomas' concurrence in the Presidential Immunity case, where he questioned the constitutionality of Jack Smith's appointment by Garland? It sounds like her reasoning was totally congruent. I'd love to see her actual ruling.
As a born-and-raised hillbilly I can definitely get behind Vance for VP.
I hope it's Vance. He's the best assassination insurance.
According to Salena Zito, the ace reporter who was just four feet from Donald Trump when he was shot and who was the first to interview him afterwards, he told her that he has torn up his original speech to the convention and is rewriting it from scratch.
Good.
Apparently no indication that he is rethinking his selection of a running mate.
Vance seems so new...would he even help at all in Ohio?
I think so. He was first important politician on the scene in East Palestine, dragging his fellow Ohio senator with him. The normal people will remember.
Let it be Vance. Rubio is a snake (remember when Nikki was a loyal member of the team?). Burgum is infected with climatista virus.
Regardless of those three, he's pissing away a whole lot of votes by passing on Noem, Stefanik and Gabbard.
@phantommut, I can't imagine why Clarence Thomas would make such a point of finding ways to smack down the Biden administration.
Payback is a bitch.
Vance decided to look down on Trump a while ago, and the media has been saying he's a lock, so I doubt he'll be picked for VP.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Trump delay the announcement and keep them monitoring everything.
Here is the NTY bringing you "the news":

This from the NYT. Trump hates the NYT.
So it will be Tulsi.

Agreed. Like Vance my family is from Appalachia, I hoping we'll stop being the last ethnic group in America it's ok to disparage.
You can't threaten justices again Chuckie,
Trump campaign officials had envisioned a grand entrance for the former president on the first night, with his pick joining him on the stage for a big reveal. But the pick might be announced during the day instead....
So it could be at night, or even during the daytime.
So reports the NYT.
Is the veep stakes down to those three? I was kind of hoping in the new climate that Tulsi Gabbard might re-enter contention. I wasn't a fan of hers when she was a creature of the Democrat party, but since she's broken off that control, I could support her.
VP JD

Trump requires approximately zero help in Ohio.
If its Vance its for other reasons.

Do tell NYTimes. It seems like the case was tossed because of how the Special Prosecutor was appointed. But keep on banging the table, I guess.

You should know better than to quote the Daily Mail, a British rag that seems to actually report American news with actual facts, photos and information, even if it is a bit sensationalized.
(this is tongue-in-cheek, of course. I do read the Mail as it does report much better than the US leading media).
Youngkin would be better.
Glenn Youngkin. Is Trump still considering him?

I want to hear just one thing from her before I would countenance her selection: an acknowledgement that recent 2nd Amendment jurisprudence is correct, that strict gun control is both unconstitutional and unworkable, and that if she ever were put into the Oval Office, she would veto attempts to ban any new classes of firearms or implement any new restrictions on their peaceable use.
Trump has plenty of good people to choose from, as contrasted to the possible choices for Biden's replacement.

I've stuck with the choice throughout her travails.

That's not going to happen. And were she to make the promise you desire, she would dump it if she were ever POTUS. She is a lefty in her soul. It's why I marvel at these fantasists proposing and advocating her as a plausible Republican VP. So she's a lefty who is not completely insane and who has said a few good things...BFD, it's absurd to think of her as a Repub VP or POTUS. (I quite like Tulsi, btw.)

Nikki is by far the smartest choice for VP as far as garnering votes for the ticket is concerned. Too much bad blood between her and Trump, though. OTOH, he's a showman, and a shock-jock, and a pragmatist - so you never know.

Oh wow. Now I get it. Tricky Nicki seriously thinks she has a shot at the VP slot, and that is why she came to the convention. Laff! Never gonna happen.
Vance is the best of the three listed, but I would prefer Stefanik (if he wants a bulldog in the role) or Carson (if he wants a healer in the role).
Ice Nine:
For the love of god, stop with this Tulsi as a Republican nonsense!
You know what they say: A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged. And Tulsi was thoroughly mugged.
(Both Reagan and Trump were Democrats before they were Republicans. Converts are welcome. (Unlike the way Democrats treat Republicans who go full Renfield; those guys are treated like Romney's carroof-riding dog.))
"flouted decades of precedent"
Very unhinged description by the NYT writer of the decision in Florida. There are no decision on point in the 11th Circuit; there are few decisions in any court construing the DOJ regulations at issue in terms of the Appointment Clause issue; and the opinion works its way through all of them. The decisions of the DC Circuit in Smith's J6 prosecution of Trump begin and end with the statement that Nixon v. US resolved the Appointment Clause issue. The decision in the Florida case analyzes the Nixon decision in detail, and concludes that the sentence relied on by the DC Circuit was dicta. Once can agree or disagree with the court's conclusions (I think Judge Cannon has the better of it), but her approach of working through the details and laying out her reasoning was the exact opposite of "flout[ing]" precedent.
On the merits of the Appointment Clause issue, I also think she got it right, especially in light of the more recent SCOTUS decisions in related cases challenging the validity of appointments in various executive agencies where Congress has not authorized the appointment via an appropriate statute. Again, agree or disagree as you will, but the backhanded suggestion in the NYT that this decision is agenda-driven hack work is completely off the wall.
Even more remarkably, her decision details the very bizarre tactics of the Special Counsel's approach -- disdainful of the court, refusing to address the remedial issues (meaning, what action the court should take if it found an Appointment Clause violation).
Nikki is by far the smartest choice for VP as far as garnering votes for the ticket is concerned.
Wrong. Picking her would tell me he learned nothing about putting the wrong people in important jobs. I would need a very tight grip on my nose to vote for a Trump/Nikki ticket.
From the motorcade video leaving JD Vance's Cincinnati home, looks like it's probably him.
Which is was Tulsi, but let's giv'er...
I'm hearing Ivanka.
Not really. I think it's going to be Matt Kemp. Part of the whole unifying the party plan.

I find they usually have the best coverage the earliest. They will run something, and it will show up on American newspaper sites hours later if at all.
How's this for a bank shot? JD Vance as VP and the Gov. of Ohio appoints Vivek as Senator.
Twofer.
Condi would be perfect but I've learned not to ask for perfect things.
Even if the dog shooting thing hadn't popped up, I think Noem would have brought back too many bad Sarah Palin memories for Republicans to feel confident about her. Tulsi is a smarter Palin, but she would also piss off too many undecided women who hate anyone who is more attractive than they are.
Agree, Condi an xlnt choice.
If not today, in the administration.

Typical insane NYT take on the matter. The judge wrote a 93 page opinion.
Rubio, Burgum, and Vance are all under 5’9”.
Pence was 5’10”.
Trump likes the height contrast between his now height of 6’0.5 and these guys.
Drudge says it will be Ben Carson which would be wonderful.
Vance it is.
Congrats Senator!
Tulsi! I can have my dreams, can’t I?
Drudge got it wrong. It’s Vance.
Trump announced Vance on Truth Social.
To those who say stop with the Tulsi as a Republican nonsense, this isn’t the party of Bush anymore if you haven’t noticed. Who would have thought Trump was the standard bearer of the Republican party. The new Republican party is NOT the party of Romney, McCain, Bush, or Schwarzernegger.
What was the "miraculous intervention"? Is the NYT now going with G-d performing miracles to aid Trump? Should the Pope be ready to announce a new saint? I guess we need a second miracle. Maybe Judge Cannon's decision is the second miracle?
NYT is outdoing the Babylon Bee these days.
Will Vance have to shave his beard like players do when they’re traded to the Yankees?
Lawnerd, I understand. It wasn't going to be Tulsi. But I understand your point.
So Vance gets to be Literally Goebbels.
Good to see Trump family members at the convention.
Eric announced the Florida delegates to put President Trump in nomination.
Tulsi would have been a great choice.
ice nine: "Nikki is by far the smartest choice for VP as far as garnering votes for the ticket is concerned."
Selecting Haley, which would be like Jeb, would be the biggest possible speed bump to the Trump campaign, would result in an EASY big net negative in terms of votes, would utterly demoralize the Trump base and would guarantee Trump would not survive to take power.
Other than that, she'd be swell.

The left/dems/LLR-dems will go with some other name as that one is too difficult to spell and pronounce consistently.
Vance is the best as far as assassination insurance. Can’t help but think recent events influenced the decision.
Looking up Vance on Wikipedia.
Vance was my preference. One weak area for Trump in his first terms was some of those with whom he surrounded himself with. He seems to have learned from his mistakes.
CNN already has its pants in a knot about J.D. Vance.
Off to a good start!
The Karl Rove types hate him, so you know he's a good choice.
I happily look forward to more Althouse beard jokes.
Great pick. I'm relieved.

It’s JDV.
Who does Trump pick for senate majority leader?
I'm so old I remember when all the lefties were celebrating J.D. Vance as the voice of the working class, ground under the iron heel of capitalism. Hillbilly Elegy was assigned in my daughter's hyper-progressive high school.
This is the best possible pick for Trump.
Populism usually eventually goes too far, but it's been so long since we've had any sustained populism at all that a nice good stretch of it should work wonders.
I personally like Vance because when he went to Yale he seems to have realized that the people there weren't any quantum level smarter or harder working than he was, but he didn't interpret this as: "I've always known I deserved to be in that elite club. I always knew I was a Secret King, just like Mommy said."
Instead he came to the correct conclusion that "Since I don't consider the people I grew up with and served with in the Marines to be dirty, stupid inferiors, the people in the elite club don't get to consider them dirty, stupid inferiors, either."

I hate the very concept. If a killer is ready to risk it all to shoot a President, they won't do so unless they control the VP.
Which is likely what happened with LBJ, by the way.
The good news is that I won't need to wait four more years to replace Vance as my senator.
I do expect a number of embarrassing moments during the election on Vance's part.
Both Begley, Meade and Althouse called it.
Now the Governor of Ohio needs to appoint Vivek as the new Senator although I'd prefer Vivek in Trump's cabinet or as Chief of Staff.
Well, I was wrong. Didn't think Trump would forgive prior insults.
Do wonder if Vance would attract as many women voters as Newsome, should the need arise.
mindnumbrobot: "The Karl Rove types hate him, so you know he's a good choice."
The last couple of weeks I was "feeling" it would be Carson, then reports circulated over the that time frame the McConnell/Rove/Bush factions were not pushing a candidate, but had gone "all in" and just blasting Vance behind the scenes.
You might recall the story from just days ago about Trump taking a couple of calls from Paul Ryan's pal Rubert Murdoch where Murdoch was slamming Vance as much as pumping Burgum.
All of that was the biggest "tell" and now, after the assassination attempt where NONE of the "answers" coming out of DC "make sense" in any way whatsoever, going with the Marine vet that has been standing strong against deep state makes all the sense in the world.
Mr Vance checks all the boxes. Handsome, blue eyed, Scots Irish, three. Kids, great wife, highly educated, rich and great initials: too: JDV. ( he’s my clone, except for my initials being JDW)
Oh Yea: "I do expect a number of embarrassing moments during the election on Vance's part."
I wonder who the perfect candidate, with no record of embarrassing moments during a potential election, might have been.
Dave Begley: "Now the Governor of Ohio needs to appoint Vivek as the new Senator although I'd prefer Vivek in Trump's cabinet or as Chief of Staff."
It's Bush-squish DeWine.
We could very easily end up with him appointing some woke democratical to the seat.
DeWine is the biggest potential flaw in this effort. I wonder if DeWine could get Jeb! to move to Ohio to take the seat? Maybe Romney would like another go at it while living in Cleveland or something.
Noem for VP made no sense ever and especially after her dog killer admission. Stefanik is just where she needs to be in the House as an attack dog. I want Gabbard to clean up Defense as its Secretary. Trump should announce a couple of these Cabinet selections during the campaign and during the convention.
Meade said, If I had the spare cash I’d send you and every Althouse reader A copy of hillbilly elegy by JD Vance.
Or watch the movie. Not the book obviously but Amy Adams, as always, is fantastic.

Why does Trump dislike beards?
Both Don Jr. and Eric wear facial hair.
Senator JD Vance will be the next US Vice President. Son of Ohio, grandson of Kentucky, a member of the Appalachian diaspora, Marine veteran, OSU & Yale Law grad, famous author, former grocery store worker. He might be the only person with Eastern Kentucky roots to achieve the VP office—at least in 100 years (Alben Barkley having been from Western Kentucky).
Toy B.
Vance should keep the beard, just so long as he doesn't have a man bun.
My husband is disappointed - he doesn't see what Vance brings and recognizes that he's very inexperienced (like Obama, I'd say, though it must be acknowledged that Obama was a state senator before he became briefly a US senator). I'm very ignorant of him.
I can see that Vance would appeal to some working class voters - the ones who know what he's written, anyway. But Trump already has that demographic locked, doesn't he? Is the expectation that he'll bring the blue blue-collar voters into the fold? Did Trump need a boost in the Rust Belt this time?
Is his youth the big draw? His position on opioid addiction and the implications for illegal immigration? His conversion to Catholicism?
I would very much appreciate education by those who were pulling for him! I'm playing catch-up here.
1: Vance doesn't have to retire from teh Senate unless and until he wins the VP
2: Vance should help with MI, WI, PA, MN, and NH. Any of those States going for Trump and it's "game over"
3: My top 3 were RDS, Youngkin, and Vance. I was appalled at pretty much all the rest of the choices. So I'm reasonably happy with this choice.
I think Trump is going to win. So my focus now is getting him to win, while bringing in an many House and Senate seats as possible
Trump didn't pick Tulsi for VP, but it's OK Tulsi, you'll always be the Vice President of my heart.
"Did Trump need a boost in the Rust Belt this time?"
Yes. It is the path to victory. That Blue Wall the Democrats depend on is real.

Vance brings high IQ (his educational achievements leave all the dems in the dust.), and a message to the working class "you are valued".
So he's a plus with suburban voters, and a plus with rural voters
Trump could announce Gabbard for any department she would like to run in D.C. this week if they are agreeable.
"I do expect a number of embarrassing moments during the election on Vance's part."
He learned which fork to use at the hoity toity parties years ago. He’ll do fine amongst the political crowd.

Trump was going to win Ohio anyway. Vance will add nothing and will not help in neighboring states. Republicans swept all Ohio statewide office last cycle with Vance getting the smallest margin of victory.
The main people excited by this choice are Democrats looking to run for President in 2028 as Vance will be a weak candidate to replace Trump.
Do wonder if Vance would attract as many women voters as Newsome, should the need arise.
Vance gives off the same alpha-male vibes as Trump, who really distinguished himself for boldness and defiance on Saturday, no matter what the sneering lefties may think.
This won't help him with the purple-haired tattooed cohort of women, nor their man-bun soy-boy orbiters, but they certainly weren't voting for Trump anyways. At the margins, this pick will instead help a little with the suburban moms concerned about crime and safety, and the least-crazy quartile of single women.
To a much greater extent, this will also help cement the final conquest of the white working class labor union guys in the Rust Belt, which will be one of the most consequential outcomes of the 2024 election over the long term.
I'm all in for Trump-Vance. Go get 'em boys! Strip the bark off that corrupt, senile heap of filth and his pet hyena!
Vance just hours after the assassination attempt:
Today is not just some isolated incident.
The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.
That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.
Damn straight.
Oh Yea said...

Really? Do tell. What will these "embarrassing moments" be?
"Dave Begley said...

Didn't you say Biden would resign last week? Called it a fact.
So it's still the Blue Wall that we have to contend with, it appears?
And turnout, of course, which I still think is going to be critical. After all, if Trump's personal - I would say "foibles," but I'll steelman that a bit and say "disadvantages"* - are considered to be baked into the cake among his supporters, ISTM that the fact that we've been governed by a Democrat politburo for who knows how long is going to be baked into the cake among Democrat supporters. They'll shrug and vote Democrat no matter what happens, figuring that whoever is running things now will continue running things in a second Biden term. And the Democrat establishment still has all its vote-wringing mechanisms in place.
Other Vance thoughts? How is he as a speaker and debater?
I wish he had picked Mrs. Vance. She has been an attorney at Munger Tolles & Olsen after clerking for the Chief Justice. (Yes, that Munger)(alhtough her page on the firm website is down; maybe she resigned recently because of all this). I have worked with them and against them over the years and they are terrific, and I am sure she's terrific.
Is Chuck back already with a fresh pseudonym?
Oops I forgot my asterisk.
* I'm saying Trump has personal "disadvantages" rather than out-and-out "shortcomings" because Biden has pretty much the same shortcomings: he is self-aggrandizing and politically opportunistic, is actually corrupt though so far he hasn't been punished for it (I think Trump in business probably took some shortcuts, which might count, but he's certainly been punished), has at least a checkered history with women...
Jamie said...

Oh Yea: "The main people excited by this choice are Democrats looking to run for President in 2028 as Vance will be a weak candidate to replace Trump."
2028 is a million years away in politics.
I was watching a Madison station online (no cable where we live; everything else except over the air too expensive for us) and just as Wisconsin was about to announce their delegates, the station switched to a clip of the White House. What the heck?!
Also, why would Utah get to announce JDV was picked for VP?
After getting screwed out of the Wisconsin announcement I said the heck with watching any more. (Plus we’re on limited data.)
This is probably as close as we'll ever get to Mike Rowe being in the White House, lol. Plus, ever Devild Dog out there is at least taking a look at him if not outright semper his fi-ing.
Curious George (to Begley): "Didn't you say Biden would resign last week? Called it a fact."
In Begley's defense, its been widely reported that the entire dem effort to replace biden was stopped cold after the assassination attempt by biden's...uh...er....uh...that young 20 year old nobody out of nowhere.
I'm very happy that Vance was picked. He has a compelling background story as the son of a single mother who was a drug addict. (I agree with Meade; everyone should read "Hillbilly Elegy".) He understands the working class, rural America, and the toll of opioid addiction. He also served with distinction in the military and credits it with putting him on a path to success. He won scholarships to Ohio State and to Yale Law School, and is a bright and well-respected lawyer. His wife is also a Yale Law School grad. His mentor at Yale was professor Amy Chua (of Tiger Mom fame) who has been a big influence on his fearlessness in the face of the woke left. And he's only 39.
Bravo, Trump, for picking Vance!
BTW, POS Mayorkas just announced the govt will now provide Secret Service protection to RFKjr...after Trump met with RFKjr for several hours earlier today.

If Biden swept MI, WI, and PA, he'd probably win the 2024 election. If he fails in any of those States, it's essentially impossible for him to win.
Trump is likely to take at least two of those States, and maybe all three. It's not so much they're "the Blue Wall", as they're "Biden's last hope"
