"As a candidate, I sometimes shied away from talking about making history."

"I wasn’t sure voters were ready for that. And I wasn’t running to break a barrier; I was running because I thought I was the most qualified to do the job. While it still pains me that I couldn’t break that highest, hardest glass ceiling, I’m proud that my two presidential campaigns made it seem normal to have a woman at the top of the ticket."

From "Hillary Clinton: How Kamala Harris Can Win and Make History," written by Hillary Clinton (or a ghostwriter), published in the NYT.

I have an aversion to the "making history" argument. And I don't like the idea of whether voters are "ready" for it. It's a visualization of a timeline of progress, in 2 ways. The first way makes perfect sense: The first female President of the United States has a place in history as the first female President of the United States. But the second way is an insidious attack on people: the idea that we voters as a group are in a process of enlightenment, some of us are further ahead than others, and one is most advanced when one is influenced by the argument that we ought to vote for someone because she will be the first.

I do appreciate the "sometimes" in "I sometimes shied away from talking about making history." As I remember it, she and her champions sounded the history-making theme continually.

And now, we've got a new candidate who can use the history-making theme. I'm still irked when I'm elbowed to come on, everybody, let's make history. I may on my own feel myself warming up to a candidate because of some personal attribute that has only a dubious connection to the ability to do the job well, but it's negatively related to this talking about making history.

ADDED: I was delighted to stumble into a TikTok that expresses how I feel about all this talk about making history:
@seanghedi can we pls go one day without something unprecedented happening😔 #USelection #unitedstates #joebiden #trump #kamalaharris #uspolitics #fyp ♬ original sound - GHEDl

When will we run out of history to make? How atomized do we have to make our society in order to keep finding historical novelty?

It's true that we haven't yet elected a woman to the presidency. But I can't imagine that Clinton believes - and the pull quote certainly suggests that she doesn't believe - that it was her sex that defeated her.

Women share more than genitals with Kamala - there's brain function. Feelings over structure. That's the structural reason for not feeling good about a fellow woman president.

Bullshit. "I'm with HER!" and all that constant reminder of a "glass ceiling"? Does she think we're this stupid or forgetful? Whether she talked about it "enough" or not it was a relentless talking point for every cable head supporting her, which is 95% of the DNC Media.

When RBG was named Supreme Court justice, I remember a newspaper columnist talking about how she was more important the Sandra Day O'Connor because she was 2nd. The 1st is a big deal--the 1st makes history. The 2nd is when it starts to become normal; the real notable moment is when it stops being notable.

This excerpt, as you point out, is just more Hillary lies. She never stopped talking about making history as the 1st woman. And the "voters aren't ready for it" is crap too. We all know far more people voted for Hillary because she's a woman than voted against her because she's a woman. She benefitted from being a woman.

Hillary wasn’t limited by the glass ceiling, she list because she is unpopular as a politician and a person and a beard. Kamala hock tuah-ed her way to the top, can’t string together one complete sentence and has a low IQ.

Do women really want one of these women to be first?

I would think another woman doing what she didn't do, especially a woman Like Kamala Harris --someone that Clinton would never think is more qualified and deserving than Hillary herself was-- will cause a whole lot more pain.

There are plenty of other countries that have elected a woman to be President, Prime Minister, whatever the head job is, so it seems kind of arrogant for us to act as if it's going to be some huge, historic event when it finally happens here. Typical Americans, it's always about us.

There's no glass ceiling. There have just been terrible candidates, like HRC, Harris, Warren, Haley etc. I'd happily vote for a candidate, no matter which of 500 genders they identify as, if I felt they represented what I wanted in the head of the executive branch.

Remember during that campaign when she went stiff as a board tilted over and had to be loaded like lumber in a van and taken to a hospital because she was, er, "dehydrated" or "overcome" by the 80 degree balmy weather?

Well, maybe that is what she counts as "shying away" from talking about how fucking historic she was. Yeah, that's probably it.

"Sometimes" implies more than one instance but that's pretty much it, I think.

Shelob lies relentlessly. She and her campaign supporters, as Althouse notes, talked about the "history-making first female Presidential candidate" at almost every single campaign event.

Unlike Harris, Shelob had the intelligence to be President but I wouldn't have trusted her ethically further than I could have thrown her fat ass. Harris, on the other hand, is a dimwit and probably unethical, too.

Hillary Clinton will never be president of the United States.
It is still wonderful to see that sentence on the screen and know it is true.
The Communist Angela Davis, running as VP in 1980 and 1984, was more a female "first" than this unethical shrew, best known for her grifting skills, whose sole claim to political prowess was staying married to her serial adulterer politician husband. Had she divorced Bill, she might just have beaten Trump.

OMG that is some nuclear level delusion right there! Hillary was not and is not qualified to watch kittens for a day. She has done absolutely NOTHING that she did not do in order to enrich herself, hide a horrible and/or illegal thing she did, denigrate those that actually did accomplish things, and attack other women because her husband was/is a cad and scoundrel.

Just another example of "failing up" and thank the good Lord that she floated up to her limit and did not get into the WH.

I'm probably still in the generally anti-OP group but make an exception because Trump has won me over.

Margaret Thatcher made history, but her femaleness was the least of it. Same with Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Angela Merkel, and today Giorgia Meloni.

Kamala Harris is not a leader. She was installed in her position, initially and openly, because she was a half black woman. Biden said so.

OldManRick said...

Kamala is not the same caliber a politician and leader as Golda Meir or Margret Thatcher or Marine Le Pen or many other successful or upcoming female leaders who "make history". They made history by what they did as a leader not by being a female.

If you want to "make history" don't do it with a third string player who will poison the pot by making people remember how bad it became when the "history maker" was elected because of their characteristics.

After Obama, I wonder how many people are "been there, done that, not going to do it again".

It is the standard DEI argument.

We keep playing this game about "firsts." One of the reasons that discrimination was so insidious is that highly qualified candidates, sometimes the best candidate, for a position were blocked for no other reason that they were in the wrong demographic. The game was rigged. The solution was to stop the discrimination so everyone could be considered for those positions and compete fairly. The fact that someone was the first woman in a certain position was notable, but it was not important. The person deserved the position. Feel free to celebrate it, but the appointment was purely based on merit.

DEI is about manufactured firsts. If there has not been a woman in such-and-such position, then a woman must be given the position. Any woman will do. Often the person selected is completely unqualified and incompetent - grifters know how to grift - but that does not matter because the entire point was "representation" and merit not being considered at all. This has gotten to absurd situations with things like the first lesbian, black, immigrant woman as Press Secretary, who was obviously in this position because she checks boxes. She's utterly incompetent, laughably incompetent even. We even get declarations of firsts that are not actually firsts, just so they can claim (falsely) that it was a first.

Hillary Clinton, for all her faults and there are many, is a good politician. She is a cruel person who should never have been in any position of power for the simple reason she is a villain, but there have been male villains who reached high offices by being good politicians, so there is precedent. Kamala Harris is incompetent. She is a bad politician and always has been. If not for Willie Brown, her ceiling would probably be Mayor of Oakland or California State Senator at best, and most likely would have ended up as an unremarkable career ADA or the trophy wife of someone with money.

Do you mean Kamala? Christ, she officially recognized illegals in California as not breaking any laws -- for being illegal.

There are lists of women raped and murdered by these illegals, all much-released in California before these crimes by her official policy as AG and DA.

If one supports her, then they support rape and murder by serial offenders violating many laws repeatedly, released by Kamala's official policy (opposed by 55 of 57 Cali DAs) many times -- because they were illegals.

Dementia would be the kindest interpretation of this flagrant ignorance. But for anyone with brains and resources, that excuse doesn't work. Are they just too lazy or too frivolous -- or too dilletantish to learn her actual record?

tommyesq said...

My biggest fear is not that Kamala will actually win, but that the "historic first black/southeast Asian woman" schtick will provide cover for the big cheat. No one would have believed record turnout for Biden, this opens the door to claim that women came out in droves, Harris reversed the growing trend of minorities moving towards Trump, etc.

In other words, Kamala comes with a lot of baggage, but those bags may well be full of already-filled-out ballots.

Harris isn't just a just a woman, she's a brat:

“Kamala IS brat,” [Charli XCX] tweeted, referring to the title of her latest album. To be “brat,” according to Charli on TikTok, is to be “that girl who is a little messy and maybe says dumb things sometimes, who feels herself but then also maybe has a breakdown but parties through it.”

But is brat Presidential?

I think the "just be yourself" and "anyone can be President" Venn diagram is starting to overlap a bit too much these days. This is all driven, of course by the "don't judge me" culture we've allowed to grow so large it's overriding common sense.
