"No, you keen-eyed MAGA sleuths, Biden’s aides didn’t schedule an early debate so that they could replace him after he flails."

"Nor did they engineer Hunter Biden’s conviction just to look virtuous. Democrats, it is not the case that if journalists just stop talking about Biden’s age, many Americans miraculously won’t notice it. Nor are there tea leaves auguring a revolt against Trump at the Republican convention. A respected public intellectual privately promoted that idea to me. And Michelle Obama will not — abracadabra! — be riding to the rescue.... Indulging such illusions is dangerous. Those of us who believe that Trump’s return to the White House would be ruinous must prosaically and persistently make the case for Biden’s superiority, flaws and all. We must plan, plod, slog. No sorcery will save us."

Writes Frank Bruni, in "The Election of Magical Thinking" (NYT).

Is it just dangerous illusion and hope of "sorcery" that has us thinking about ways to replace Biden as the Democratic candidate?! Biden plainly looks and sounds as though he's not capable of performing the job anymore. Trusting him even until January 2025 seems like more of a dangerous game of magical thinking. Bruni has written his column to pooh-pooh those of us who are seriously worried about Biden and to take credit for pretending there's no problem worth talking about.

But I don't think Bruni is delusional. I think he's bullshitting in print but in his head he's got it figured out. It's too hard to replace Biden* and it seems less likely to work than just crossing your fingers and — la la la — moving along as if nothing is amiss and you are crazy if you think so.** And you know who's really crazy? Donald Trump.

The crazy thing is there is no one on the left who has the name recognition, the experience, the youth, the monetary backing or the will to replace Joe and go against Trump. Biden stalled for months and wore everyone down, including himself. He’s pathetic, and so is the party he leads. They just can’t deal with reality, having contorted it for their own benefit for nearly two decades.

The Democrat kind of magical thinking is potentially very dangerous thinking. Even the semi-rational Democrats believe that there must be enough intelligent, competent people around Biden to make critical decisions, if necessary. What they don't seem to comprehend is whether there would be enough time in certain circumstances to make such a decision.

I can think of a wide range of circumstances where there wouldn't be enough time. How would you gather enough of the key people at 3am? Which person(s) would have the authority to make the life and death decision?

It's a pretty dangerous game of magical thinking the Bidenists are playing.

It was easy to gaslight everyone when the establishment controlled the means of communication. There were only three big broadcast networks and PBS for the people who wanted to consider themselves sophisticates. Whatever Cronkite or Rather said was holy writ. A few influential newspapers and magazines, controlled by corporations who set the agenda and the party line. It was all so much easier then. The internet was like a wooden shoe thrown into the gears of the MSM propaganda machine. Which is why the PTB are desperately trying to enforce a censorship regimen on it.

Think about this:

Chuck Schumer said, “Let me tell you: You take on the intelligence community — they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you” to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC. An actual non-partisan reporter would have had some pointed questions for him, such as:

Are you stating that US intelligence agencies interfere with internal US politics?
Do you have any examples of this?
How highly placed are the people doing this?
What measures are being taken to limit such behavior?
When someone is caught doing this, how are they disciplined?

To my knowledge, no MSM reporter has asked Schumer any of those questions. Why bother? Everyone knows the answers.

Because asking those questions would highlight the fact that the US intelligence community is routinely interfering with internal US politics. And an intelligence agency interfering in its country's politics is as predictable as sunrise at dawn. And therefore, you should take any proclamation from the intelligence community with a grain of salt. For instance, like when 51 intelligence officials say that a certain laptop has the "hallmarks" of a Russian disinfo op.

I assume that some of the people who write this stuff must be at least a little smart. Can they not, for two minutes, quit looking at the man and look around him? Compare the state of war, immigration, the economy in, say, 2019, with 2023. Things were better. I’m not dreaming that. And yet it seems impossible for a pretty big swath of people to quit being laser focused on Trump The Man.

Trump said one thing with respect to the Ukraine war, and I can’t get it out of my head: “I want everybody to stop dying.” No one else seems to be concerned with actual lives. Even that statement was framed as Trump wanting to side with Putin! Insane.

I don't think it was ever true that Trump picked on a disabled reporter purely for his disability. Unfortunately, he is doing that now to Biden. The obvious high ground, which I think would also be more effective, would be to say whoever is running the White House, they are implementing policies that are a disaster for the country.

I wish there was a path to victory for Bobby K. It would bring joy to the Joe Poli Sci in me if the House were to elect him.

Having said all that, it may be that if Biden does any events at all from now on, he will be carried on stage by Obama, the way one might carry a disabled child.

"I have spoken with the President at some length, and I can paraphrase what he wants to say. Trump is evil. The Devil incarnate. All Democrats are noble by comparison. Even many Republicans agree. Jonah Goldberg wrote a book on liberal
fascism, and he has never described the Biden regime as a liberal fascist one."

"It doesn't really matter how good or bad Joe is. He has the right people in place, and there will be even more good people when the makeup of the Supreme Court changes."

"By the way: we will be accused of raising false hopes. Blacks can cease to be ghetto, and whites can cease to be hicks. In the history of this great--well, above average or barely acceptable--nation, there has never been anything false about hope."

If our reality demands an archetype of unalloyed Goodness, God the Father Almighty, doesn't it also demand the antipode? The Devil -- the Despicable and Indespensible. That's job security, boy howdy. If there's an offical ranking of roles, Prince of Darkness and Author of Lies must be near the top, which brings me to Frank Bruni. I do not trust that a Red Wave is coming.

The 'éminence grise' @tcrosse refers to, will not be replaced if there's a Democrat win, however legitimate. I think this possibility merits some thought.

If Joe Biden could have been propped up successfully, after an election that remains hotly contested 4 years later, after an inauguration conducted in virtual secrecy behind high-security fences, after so many public gaffes showing incompetency, if this can be accomplished successfully using all of the figureheads available for support, then it can be done with any Democrat that is recognizable to the public. It would be hard to find someone that is more incompetent than Joe, in his present condition. Therefore: Any change would be a performance improvement.

I think they plan to run Joe until he drops, or retires, and then slot in Kamala behind him, as smoothly as possible. I think their biggest obstacle at present, is Jill. If the 'éminence grise' can keep control, they will shift Kamala, correctly claiming 'but this is the process, this is how our Constitution works ! ', and then pull some policy levers that are the hottest - maybe close the border, say - to cool things politically, and then quickly slot a reliable candidate into the VP office - say, Gavin Newsome.

Tell me what doesn't work about this scenario. It's too complicated, replacing Joe now. They've managed to run the Executive Branch for 4 years, with nothing much more than a living presence.

He knows his enemies and his friends. And he can keep on his feet with enhancement drugs and learn to ask Trump about his convictions as he's learned the party line all through his life. Basically, he's just following orders and raking in cash as he's done all his life. But America around him is undergoing painful changes. Money doesn't go far enough because prices have stayed high; another whole generation in the black community is has lost the chance to get an education; manufacturing has gone to China; there's antisemitism on campuses and attacks on free speech; there's exclusion of conservatives from institutions they support with taxes or as the audience for entertainment; there's rot in the Army; the CDC caused a catastrophe. And FJB isn't handling these situations except with muddled PR attempts. Part of the problem is that FJB is rich and insulated but ultimately he can't break out and deal with it all because of the way he's aged. One of the hard things is that the world changes and some older people can't. Trump can; FJB can't. Trump has engaged with all these issues while FJB's mind just slips into the old way of thinking as if the old realities were all still there. It's not a crime to be too old to be President. The crime is being President while you are too old; the crime is running for a second term while you are harming other people through your incapacity. FJB has angered me by his relentless greed and shameless indifference and that's why I now call the US President FJB. But at the base of it all there's just a man grown too old to know what he's really doing to his country.

Sorry, Prof, but he is in fact correct.

The problem he faces is that no one can honestly "make the case for Biden’s superiority", because Biden is completely inferior, and Harris is worse.

Biden can't be replaced, because
1: Harris is even worse
2: The electoral cost of pushing a black female VP aside for anyone other than another black female is greater than the cost of going with Biden.

Which was "Dr Jill's" bet in 2020, and the reason why she had Joe pick Kamala

I don't think it was ever true that Trump picked on a disabled reporter purely for his disability. Unfortunately, he is doing that now to Biden.

As with the reporter, that's not all Trump is doing.

I don't think Trump is a moral exemplar, and I think it's possible that, although I think he certainly would have included the man's role as a journalist in his mockery, it's not out of the question that he chose a cruel vehicle. But - again - his primary message there was that the guy was not doing journalism well.

Similarly, Trump is certainly bringing attention to (I don't object to using the word "mocking" here - again, Trump is no moral exemplar) Biden's mental and physical feebleness, but the message is that Biden is unfit to be president. That message, that fact, seems self-evident and unassailable to me, but the press corps appears almost united in its efforts to "hide the decline," so Trump has made it part of his campaign strategy.

I absolutely agree with, say, Rich and Chuck (I will now engage in some mind-reading) that it isn't enough to show that you have more energy and more cognitive ability than the frankly pathetic creature who is our current president. Where I differ with them is, first, in their weird contention that Trump is just as addled as Biden - in what world?! - and second, that Trump hasn't also made the case that he is the best alternative to Biden. Hell, he literally demonstrated his superior policy platform, executive ability, and respect for the Constitution for four years, against a constant headwind.

Tom T. said...

Why does the DNC and democratic leadership want Biden to be re-elected?

The staffers around Biden, from Jill on down, want Biden to be reflected because otherwise they lose their jobs and their access to power (even if another Democrat were to take his place). Hence he insists on running again. Insiders can try to persuade him to step down for the good of the party, but he's not capable of making that decision himself; that's the whole problem.

The committee is just an administrative body; it doesn't have a means to force a candidate out after the primaries. Also, even if he were to step down now, it doesn't have a means to select someone else besides Harris, who is even less appealing. And we know for sure that she won't step down voluntarily.

Vonnegan said...

I think the people lying about what's going on with Biden, and many of those who will vote for him, are completely fine with him being an empty husk. He's president in name only, and that's all good. These folks want Obama and his friends running things, and that's what they're getting. Obama showed them that when he led Joe off the stage the other night: don't worry, y'all, I'm still in charge. All Joe has to do is not die; that makes him a fine president for almost 1/2 the electorate.

Very much agree. But I think that those staffers aren’t all operating in a vacuum, but rather some, but not all, are Clinton and esp Obama loyalists. For example, I expect that their Israeli/Palestinian position is primarily driven by Susan Rice and the Obamaites. My guess is that the LawFare attacks on their enemies are more likely coming from the two Yale Law grad former First Couple, than the Harvard grads.

Also, even if he were to step down now, it doesn't have a means to select someone else besides Harris, who is even less appealing. And we know for sure that she won't step down voluntarily

Agreed. The problem is very likely Harris. She was the political price FJB paid to get the nomination. She was traded for the backing of the CBC by Rep Clyburn. After that, FJB cruised to the nomination. It would have been a good deal - if she could have spoken coherently in public. She probably wasn’t really vetted first, but, rather the deal was just thrown over the fence as a fait accompli. But being the VP means that her turn is next. Black support for FJB is declining already - imagine what would happen with that if she is pushed out, or a white gun (e.g. Newsome) or gal (e.g. Crooked Hillary) is jumped over her? Keep something in mind - in most of the 5-6 swing states that were stolen by the Dems in 2020 to put FJB in office were done by heavily Black city employees in heavily Black big cities. Without Blacks, their critical election fraud operations probably fall apart.

The time to have pushed Harris out was last year. Now is probably too late. But the dithering by the leaderless WH allowed the opportunity to disappear through their dithering. FJB himself was probably the only one who could have done so, and he is too far gone to have understood its need. They still have their Harris problem, combined with the real expectation that if they are re-elected, she will, indeed have her turn as President, given FJB’s continuing decline. Doping him up and pushing him out on stage takes a toll on people in his situation, very likely accelerating the process.

Let's check the options:

1. Replace Biden? With whom and how?
2. Go with Joe and watch him stumble through the debate and then the convention but never let him out in public again?
3. Incarcerate the convicted felon Trump?

I got it! When faced with the impossibility of 1 and 2, there is always door number 3. Whew! Good thing their NY judge is on the case.

And it has the added advantage that it may force the federal courts to get involved. This may even force the SC to get involved. Game, set, match!

You may thank me on July 11.

Biden might be clever to keep him ranting and let Trump himself remind people of why they don’t want him back.

That's why Trump's crowds are so small...

That's why Trump's crowds are so small...

And why Biden's are so huge.

"Why does the DNC and democratic leadership want Biden to be re-elected?"
Simple. Graft.
There is an enormous amount of money to be made by every member of congress and their NGOs

such smart thinking disproves low IQ theory for Ed. D graduates!!!!

Seriously? How "high IQ" do you have to be to come up with the age old "pick a VP who's so bad no one will be willing to dump Joe?"

That's like, maybe, requiring a 105 IQ.
