"Most of the prominent Democrats with whom I speak have been concerned to the point of panic about how inept they’ve found [Biden's] campaign."

Said Frank Bruni in a "Round Table" discussion at the NYT, "Trump Is Blocking Out the Sun: Three Writers on the Political Impact of the Guilty Verdict."

And there's this gem from Olivia Nuzzi: "The eternal problem for candidates running against Donald Trump is that he sort of photosynthesizes any and all attention to grow bigger and stronger and block out the sun for everyone else around. He manages to define the terms of the conversation, and because he lives in his own reality, these things do not matter as they would for any other candidate."

Why face up to the smallness of Joe Biden when confronted with the ludicrous hugeness of Donald Trump?

I wonder if anyone has told Joe that oftentimes when he speaks he makes no sense, that his words are often garbled and unrecognizable, and that he often uses the wrong name when referring to other people or places. Also that he at times will fade off for no apparent reason. These events happen virtually every time he speaks. Has anyone actually informed him how often these things happens, and asked him if he thinks that that is ok for a US President to do, someone with an enormous amount of responsibility?

Joe’s the president, with the bully pulpit. His being blocked out is his own doing. His oratory skills are just not there.

I've grown so cynical about this administration that I'm convinced the Biden campaign is trying to lower the bar so far that Joe can simply shuffle across it for the debates.

When that reporter asked him about how he felt about Trump's claim to be a political prisoner, he displayed that creepy smile, more of a rictus, he looked more like a buzzard than a human. He's not endearing, he is obsessed with power, obsessed with war. He thinks he found a cheat code for fighting WW3 without suffering the fate of LBJ, it was actually Soros who wrote back in 1993 that the US would use Eastern European young men to fight its war with Russia, and Soros thought that this was a great thing, and so does Biden.

Biden was SELECTED in 2020 to be the "safe old white guy puppet" and viable alternative to Trump. Biden has always functioned as the bought-and-paid-for harmless white guy symbol for Democrats. That's why he was selected to be Obama's VP too.

All of this may be so on the surface, as supporting arguments, but the reason that they rammed Joe Biden specifically down our throat was that the security state has been building towards this war with Russia since the fall of the USSR, the "Orange Revolution" in Ukraine was a CIA op, it didn't take, and the Ukrainians just voted back in a Russia friendly government, then the Maidan coup didn't take, and the voters voted in Zelensky by a landslide, on a promise of peace with Russia, and Trump was vilified, because he probably would have made that peace, leaving Ukraine intact, and neutral, and ushering an era of peace and prosperity for Europe, when the neocons and the CIA had been working to create this war for decades. Biden and Blinken didn't care about any promises that Zelensky made to the voters of Ukraine and could be trusted to get this war underway, and that is the real reason it could only be him.

If the Democrats, including their propaganda arms, had treated Trump only as badly as they had treated any other Republican president he'd be ending his second term with the entire GOP mad at him, and they'd be teed up to elect any of a dozen plausible candidates President this year. But they got it into their heads, maybe because he beat their girl like a red-headed stepchild riding a rented mule, that they not only could but should set out to destroy him. Something has changed in the past two days. There is this article at the NYT's and also an article at the WSJ. Center, above-the-fold, front page.

"Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping"

https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/joe-biden-age-election-2024-8ee15246?mod=hp_lead_pos7

The article appeared yesterday evening and has remained there for over eight hours. Normally when the WSJ is reluctantly reporting on a subject, the article is posted on the lower left, below the "fold" and only remains visible on the front page for a couple hours before disappearing from immediate notice.

The article is long, has statements by both named sources and those who prefer to remain anonymous. The article also allows comments which is usually not done when the article even mildly criticizes Biden or another Democrat.

The Democrats seem to be looking for a way to replace Biden now that their lawfare against Trump has backfired.

My favorite part is that ALL the Democrats who criticized Joe Biden got a good talking to from the WH and then dutifully (and confusedly) called the reporter to say, "Uh, I don't know, they just asked me to call and say Joe's fine." And the reporters included these revised quotes along with their initial assessments in the article, further emphasizing the panic at the DNC. Beautiful journalism there.

You know that moment when you are playing with your toys and you realize for the very first time that they are toys? I think the Dems were able to play with the way computers and networking and video games extend us and people are simply becoming aware that that toy is a toy. I mean, for example, stacking all news stories in a certain order to influence responses doesn't work as well when people look to see how all the news stories are being stacked to influence responses. That's when news anchors start to resemble barking seals. But that all depends on realizing how your mind is working when extended in certain ways due to computers and their reach. People aren't so overwhelmed by the simple newness of their own responses and aren't reacting like children to toys. But the Dems still think no one knows why the candy is on the low shelves by the grocery checkout counter.

The Democrats have made several strategic mistakes- trying to put Trump in jail is just one of them. I expect Merchan next month to try to sentence Trump to either jail or home arrest to take him off the campaign trail. However, the biggest mistake was not replacing Joe Biden in the primaries. Any competent candidate with name recognition would have defeated Biden in the primaries but the DNC blocked all those possible candidates. I think they believed that, if they had to, Biden could be replaced at the convention should it look like he was losing beyond the possible margin of fraud. However, that looks like it might not be possible- any replacement now starts to look too desparate to succeed- any new candidate is now just stuck with the smell of Biden shit all over him/her.

They either replace him with Kamala Harris, who's an utter disaster who's even worse for them than Biden, or else they completely lose either the "black vote" or the "female vote" (or both, if they replace a black female with a white male like Newsom).

Joe / Jill carefully picked Kamala as the only national politician so much worse than Joe that the Democrats wouldn't be willing to dump him for her.

As neither Joe nor Jill is willing to give up their spot, teh Dems are simple screwed.

There's no method to dispose of an unwanted VP during their term without their consent, however grudgingly given, so the only thing left is to kick her off the ticket at the convention. They can't do that and keep Biden without setting off a thermonuclear political bomb. If the Democrats had been able to agree on a successor to Biden, Harris or not, it likely would have happened by now.

I think the plan was for these ridiculous trials to generate the "convicted felon" headline and then for a bunch of dishonest polls to show a "sudden shift" away from Trump, but it has backfired badly, in that a surprising number of not only Normies, but also sort of generic, non-ideological Democrats (i.e., here in Mass., middle- and working-class people of Irish or Italian or Greek ancestry who always vote the straight D ticket because their families always have*) were disgusted by the too obvious dishonesty of the whole thing, so that even deliberately cooked polls showed Trump's support increasing.
Obviously whatever Merchan pulls out of his butt regarding "gag orders" or "house arrest" has the potential to influence things, but I think the next big wild card is the Republican convention: it seems as if it is being set up for there to be serious Antifa-coordinated violence there. The problem for the Democrats is that the more visible their paramilitaries are, the less support their party gets. BLM-Antifa riots were good for intimidating Attorneys General and Judges / Justices, but they don't do much to push public opinion in the direction of the Dems.

*Most of the actual support for Trump from these people isn't really based on that much concern about the rule of law, etc., but on the massive inflation we've suffered over the past 4 years, in which the prices of a lot of food staples have pretty much doubled: I paid $5 for a gallon of milk yesterday!. But the idiotic verdict is working as a nucleation site for the large-scale reaction.

Mmmm. That's getting harder and harder to do. Michigan and Wisconsin are the two battleground states that look like a lock for Biden unless the Republicans can get more feet on the ground and get more people to the polls. And also if they could outlaw Zuckerbucks. Pennsylvanis did and it's looking better for Trump there.
I've signed up to be a poll watcher at one of the bluer citie here in Illinois.

I agree. The people controlling him have too much at stake now to change.

It's amazing the denial I see in so many of my far-left Democrat friends about Biden. They absolutely refuse to believe that he isn't mentally sharp, may have acted inappropriately in the past or that many of his policies are bad for the country.

As a Libertarian, I'm a realist and if my candidate sucks, I admit it. And most Libertarian candidates suck; they're just not ready for Prime Time.

I thought that Gary Johnson was a good candidate in 2016, but then he got tripped up by a reporter who asked him what he thought about Aleppo. (He didn't know it was a city in Syria with a massive refugee crisis.) At this point in history, everyone knew about the refugee crisis in Syria, but no one knew the name, Aleppo. Within 24 hours every reporter and anchor in the media became an instant expert on Aleppo and dogged Gary like there was no tomorrow. They were so proud of themselves that they had torpedoed his campaign, but by doing that, they may have tipped the election to Trump. (Gary was a former Republican and would have taken more votes away from Trump than Hillary.)

That's the problem with having party extremists call the shots in an election. They'll put on their ideology blinders and drive the car right off the edge of the cliff.

Agree, loudog (Sublime reference?).

Mike Barnicle disingenuously asked Gary Johnson, "what are you going to do about a leppo?" as if it were two different words. It was designed to trip him up, imho. If he wanted to be fair and clear, he would have asked "what are you going to do about the Syrian refugee crisis?"

And yes, I voted for Johnson in 2016, then Trump in 2020, and I would crawl over broken glass to vote Trump in 2024.

How they found it? I'll bet it involved both hands in broad daylight.

Sure they can. Biden has a "medical episode" which makes it impossible for him to run.
They open the voting at the convention with Kamala as "the preferred candidate".
All the blue state delegations vote unanimously for her. A carefully planned "Just enough" of the red state delegations where the D's have no hope of carrying, abstain or split their vote.
Darn if they don't have to have a second ballot. Oh shucks.
Now the D's can claim they tried to give the nomination to Kamala and she fell just short. A few more ballots with Hillary climbing each time and darn if if it's not Hillary again!

Trump will hold a fund raiser for tech execs in San Francisco Thursday

You know why, right? Biden has promised to implement an 25% "unrealized gain tax" on start-ups that will just kill VC business in Silicon Valley and all over really. Entrepreneurs will only support liberalism until the fascist fangs come out, and Joes choppers are showing. I doubt "unrealized gains" can be taxed under our current Constitution, but then I used to believe Bills of Attainder were Constitutionally prohibited too. Silly me. Now we know!

They're planning that for everyone. So, get ready to start drawing money from your 401k or IRA to pay the taxes you owe because it didn't lose money. Oh, wait a minute. If this is implemented its sure to lose money.

Chris, have you not heard of Agnew? If the Dems are serious, they could easily "find" a crime by Harris to get rid of her as VP. She doesn't seem to be very bright, but I think they could explain it to her so she'd understand and resign.

Yes I know about Agnew getting ditched to install Gerald Ford before Nixon resigned, which is why I said "however grudgingly given." The Democrat Senate is not going to convict and remove Harris, assuming the Republican House would assent to impeaching her to fix the Democrat's problem. In any scenario you come up with short of impeachment or assassination, she has to agree to resign.

You have a really rich fantasy life.

Kamala is "next in line"

There will be hell to pay with the entire DEI crowd if Biden is tossed, a nd she doesn't get the nod.

Take a look at the WNBA
Take a look at all the black female players who are more interested in attacking Caitlin Clark, than in having the WNBA be more popular because of her.

Now, imagine what happens w/ black female voters if Kamala is toss for Hillary, or anyone else who isn't black and female

It's doesn't really matter here what Kamala does.

What matters here is that, just like those black female WNBA players who'd rather have empty stands and no Caitlan Clark, rather than have full stands and financial success, but owe it to a "pretty white girl", black female voters in large numbers will not go to teh polls and vote, or else leave "President" blank, rather than vote for some "white savior" male or female who the Dems moved in "so they could win".

And every one who doesn't go to the polls for this is a loss for every single down-ballot Dem candidate

Making the "cure" worse than the disease
