Hunter Biden found guilty.

"Hunter Biden guilty of felony gun charges, faces 25 years in prison" (NY Post).
Hunter Biden became the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of a crime Tuesday after a federal jury found him guilty on three counts related to lying about his drug use in order to buy a gun....

The first son stared at the jury and made no visible reaction as the foreperson read the verdict.... First lady Jill Biden, who was present at every day of the trial except one, was caught out by the speed with which the verdict was reached — entering the courtroom two minutes after it had been read.

LOL! I guess I was wrong about this particular jury.

Of course, I also think this particular charge was ridiculous to bring in the first place, so another verdict I don't agree with. The difference here, though, is that Biden really was guilty of this crime and there are people in prison right now tried under the exact same charges.

Biden can't pardon him before the election, but can after he wins or loses in November.

This is a smokescreen as there are no charges related to tax crimes or FARA.

Where did Hunter's money come from?

What was he selling?

Who else got paid.

Very inconvenient...

Hunter just earned himself the crack-smoking, pimp-handing, rap-tastic, stripper-fucking, pistol-packing, bad-boy street cred he always yearned for. He was doing all of this before, but now it's official. He needs a gold grill and some prison tats now that he's "state-property", then he can run the jewels with Spotemgottem and Pooh Shiesty.

It’s nice to see the widespread support for the rule of law and the respect for the jury. In a weird way, MAGA Republicans are going to be the most upset by this because it complicates their phony “rigged DOJ” narrative. I bet we see complaints from them about the conviction.

Hunter's got nothing to worry about. Once the election is over, Joe will pardon him. It's as certain as the sun rising in the morning. What's Joe got to lose?

Yancey Ward said...

"Biden can't pardon him before the election, but can after he wins or loses in November."

There is a way to do it but Joe Biden would have to either pardon Donald Trump of the federal charges at the same time (not going to happen, and Trump probably wouldn't accept the pardon) or he would have to pardon every single person in federal prison charged with the same sort of crime. In any case, Hunter Biden isn't going to prison immediately and might not even receive such a sentence given this is his first conviction. Joe Biden can wait right up until Hunter is at the prison entranceway, which is pretty far into the future right now.

doctrev said...

Hunter has a great deal to worry about. It's not going to be hard to persuade him that he is expendable, even to his own father. Wait until after the election? I wouldn't trust Hunter Biden to feed pets, never mind do time patiently for what might turn into years.

And Donald Trump won't accept a pardon, for obvious reasons, while a blanket amnesty would pretty much eviscerate American gun law.

It is almost like Rich doesn't know the details of this prosecution or believes we don't. The Biden DoJ tried to let Hunter Biden skate and it was only the judge who had to approve the plea deal that stopped it and force the government to take it to trial.

I would like the record to reflect that I stated as the trial began that there was no downside to the defense's being lame and half-hearted, because a conviction - on this particular charge, as OG Mike pointed out above, the only charge that doesn't implicate the President - ought to be the logically desired outcome.

The best way for the administration to defuse charges of election-interference-via-judicial-tampering would be for Hunter Biden to be convicted on a charge that he absolutely couldn't deny he was guilty of; that way it appears that "the system works," that "no one is above the law" despite the fact that the Trump trial was entirely different in every possible way.

I was very surprised that so many people herein thought the Biden administration would push (behind the scenes, obviously) for an acquittal. They aren't THAT confident. Not yet.

I think this is related: I've just started listening to the recent Tulsi Gabbard interview on Triggernometry. It's interesting to hear her talk about the direct rebukes from the Obama White House that she received when she came out against their Syrian adventures... and the NYT hit piece that came out against her the very day she announced her 2020 candidacy.

"I was very surprised that so many people herein thought the Biden administration would push (behind the scenes, obviously) for an acquittal. They aren't THAT confident. Not yet."

I don't think a lot of us thought the Biden Administration would push for an acquittal, but rather we expected the jury to just provide it or at least a hung jury given the jurisdiction.

I do admit to being surprised the defense was so lame, but that might be because the charges were really undeniably true- I didn't weight that fact enough pre-trial.

doctrev said...

Look, the conviction problem has a few plausible scenarios:

Trump and Hunter both avoid jail time or restrictions" on campaigning: The left will lose their minds, wondering what the hell everything was for. If anything, they'll be less incensed that the Obamajudge didn't deliver, while worrying that they're personally going on a terminal carbon monoxide diet.

Trump and Biden are both sentenced harshly: The pressure on Joe Biden to pardon his son is going to be nearly total, likely to happen before the election. Biden isn't going to risk his son turning on him.

Trump is jailed, Hunter is not: The most likely outcome, which will cause immense pressure on SCOTUS to review the Trump case. It will weaken Biden hideously with black voters, who will see a crackhead skating for his obvious crimes. Actually a pretty good outcome for Trump, particularly if his base decides "for justice, we must go to Don Corleone."

Hunter was guilty, and you didn't need a lengthy explanation with lots of dependent clauses to understand what he was guilty of. To find him innocent and Trump guilty would have further undermined respect for our legal system and done so in an even more substantial way than the Bragg farce......Here's President Biden's problem. If faced with a lengthy jail term, Hunter perhaps has the option of telling all he knows for a immunity or a reduced sentence. Hunter doesn't look like the kind of stand up guy who would do ten years so as not to rat out his accomplices. Ergo, Hunter will not face any kind of jail time......I wouldn't want to be a Biden who fell afoul of the law during the Trump administration. That's why the future of democracy depends so much on Biden's re-election. It also might be a reason why Biden is seeking re-election. I don't think a President Newsome would be all that invested in keeping a Biden out of prison.

That's how I see it. Win or lose, J. Biden pardons H. Biden. If he wins (should that be "wins"?), then there's plenty of time in his second term for his successor to distance themself [sic] from the pardon, possibly in a "more in sorrow than in anger" fashion by regretfully pointing out that the President appears to have been succumbing to dementia beginning at the end of his first term and continuing throughout that second term, like Reagan before him - but darn it, what's done is done.

If he loses, then he really has nothing to lose by pardoning his son.

And Hunter isn't going to roll on his dad. Even if he were inclined to, which (based on what he's been putting up with all these years already) I think unlikely, who would ask him to?

No he wouldn't. Exercise of the pardon power doesn't have to be equitable or fair or consistent. And if Biden loses, his political career is over -- he doesn't have the time or party loyalty for a third act. So no reason to play-act at being statesmanlike anymore. And he loves his son.

All that said, this was sort of a BS prosecution. More grounded than the Trump trial, but I don't think anyone really cares about drug-addled Hunter Biden's gun license application. It's the bit about selling access that's appalling, and even there the charges probably couldn't be corruption (because selling access is how American princelings make a living) but either failing to register under FARA (itself usually a sign of a BS prosecution) or money laundering.

I also don't think the issue will arise, however- Biden with either get probation or the sentencing and report to jail won't happen until the election is in the rear-view mirror when Joe Biden won't have to worry about the political optics any longer.

If Hunter Biden is ordered to prison at some point, Biden will issue the pardon- guaranteed.

After the crooked plea deal got sniffed out, Hunter took the fall like a good capo.

This is where the story could get very interesting. The initial plea deal went pear-shaped when the question of "does this clear Hunter Biden of all other crimes possibly committed" came up. His legal team freaked out, because the answer was supposed to be yes, which of course the Feds couldn't admit to on record.

I don't think his lawyers couldn't have finessed that; the deal had obviously been made and Hunter's laptop would have been an unfortunate incident in the past and given the old "let bygones be bygones" treatment. Instead Hunter went into rabid son-of-daddy mode and said screw that.

Hunter is an erratic 50-some year old spoiled addict. Hunter hasn't dealt with his addictions well and has never needed to learn the skills to change that. (I know a little bit about addiction. I'm a dry alcoholic; needing and getting a liver transplant will focus the mind on NOT doing again the things that got you under the knife. I've not seen any evidence Hunter's had his "come to Jesus" moment, as his daddy might put it.) How Hunter reacts could change this from a trivial interlude into a real political catastrophe for the Democrats.

We are naturally disappointed by today’s verdict. We respect the jury process, and as we have done throughout this case, we will continue to vigorously pursue all the legal challenges available to Hunter. Through all he has been through in his recovery, including this trial, Hunter has felt grateful for and blessed by the love and support of his family.

Most famously, it reminds me of life in another time on another continent, when the chief prosecutor in Stalin's Moscow show trials, Andrey Vyshinsky, ramped up the language of abuse when addressing the historic leaders of the Bolshevik Party. Lenin’s close comrades Kamenev and Zinoviev would soon be sentenced to death. Summing up his case — which Vyshinsky knew was entirely made-up, based on nothing — he shouted:

Shoot these rabid dogs. Death to this gang who hide their ferocious teeth, their eagle claws, from the people! ... Down with these abject animals! Let’s put an end once and for all to these miserable hybrids of foxes and pigs, these stinking corpses!”

Of course a President Trump would be pardoning Don Junior if he had been charged. See, e.g., Charles Kushner.

A morally barren, lame freakin' duck Joe Biden will of course pardon Hunter for any conviction that results in significant jail time - like the upcoming tax evasion case. The old man is simply not going to allow his sole surviving son to spend his (Joe's) final years in prison. That is not going to happen. Why is there anyone who doesn't understand this?

If Hunter is sentenced to jail time for this gun stuff, it will be for a paltry term. I'm guessing Biden won't pardon him for that. The pardon will come in the fall, after Hunter is (probably) convicted of the tax charge (which calls for serious jail time) - and of course, after the election.

Lying on a form should result in a fine and maybe a jail (not prison) sentence depending on circumstances. 25 years is completely unwarranted. Hunter should not serve time for this. However, he should have been tried for many other things which he was not. Hooray for a correct verdict, but I am not pushing for prison time. Boo for manipulating things so that serious crimes are swept under the rug.

Over-charging is a horrible artifact of our judicial system.

For example on Trump's case, there was one specific issue (I won't call it a crime), of trying to hide a single incident and calling it a legal expense. The 34 pieces of paper involved should be evidence of the single issue, not 34 separate "crimes". It would be the difference between firing 34 hots at one person in order to kill them and firing one shot at 34 different people. Or maybe you charge a convenience store clerk 36 counts of selling alcohol to a minor for selling 6 six-packs in one transaction rather than one count of selling alcohol. It is legal abuse and I think many people understand that. But 34 counts sounds so much more scary than one count, so they charge each part of the same issue separately though there is only one issue being decided.

If we Americans really wanted "to do somthing" about gun violence then there should be a DoJ task force that charges 100% of the felons, drug addicts, illegal aliens, dishonorable discharges for the military, citizenship reouncers, the mentally unsound, those convicted of domestic violence, and all the rest of the ineligible persons caught possessing firearms, ammo, or components. Bottom line: Yes it would be disproportional in the amount and race of the people charged, but that's the price we have to pay if we truly want to have a safer society. Real talk. Give BATFE something constructive to do for a change and let the chips fall where they may. Don't make this just about Hunter Biden.

"This judge and prosecutor were not crooked and this trial was not rigged."

The Left would like very badly to equate this trial with the outcome in Trump's. You know... comparing a guy who's convicted of *something* (have they announced what that was yet?) with one who was demonstrated to have broken an actual law (however poorly conceived).

BTW, if this is true:

"The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 [Brady Bill], ushered into law by then-Sen. Joe Biden, at the time chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made Form 4473 a key part of background checks for gun purchases mandated by the law."

one must have a heart of stone to hear of that without laughing.

There is a legal difference between the two and FJB could claim he's kept his promise to 'not pardon his son' after commuting Hunter's sentence. HB would still be technically guilty, but free of any sentences/fines to be paid.
FJB then responds to a weak volley of questions from the collaborating press by stating "any father who loves his child would do the same." OWTTE.

Being a 2A absolutist (even with age), I don't believe such a form or restrictions should exist. To address the question, some addicts are functional. Gun crime should only be in the area of using them to harm or kill someone, of in the commission of a robbery, for example.

They charged and (maybe) will punish Hunter for the crime, but it was an easy choice to do that, and not to follow the bribery and money laundering stuff.

I noticed some "news" sites are calling Hunter "the First Son". No, that's Beau, who died in combat somewhere in some war, you take your pick.

I call bullshit on this. Joe Biden does NOT love Hunter - at least not in the unconditional & sacrificial sense of the word. A loving father would not make a son with known self-control and compulsive addiction issues act as the family's bagman. A loving father would have found a way to protect Hunter from easy access to tons of cash and high risk/high pressure business deals. A loving father would have made personal sacrifices in his own career in order to help his son avoid the limelight and give him room to heal.

Joe Biden is many things, but loving father is NOT one of them.

Hunter has a trump card. He is extremely well informed as to the Biden family's business dealings. It would behoove Joe Biden to stay on the good side of his son. Joe can pardon his son, but Hunter can convict his Dad. There is a reason why the Biden family members go out of their way to let Hunter know they care about him. We're all hoping that Hunter doesn't hang himself or die of an overdose, but these things happen to addicts. Whatever happens to Hunter, you may be sure that the Biden family will take care of him.

I agree with many of the posters above that Hunter Biden's potential sentence -- 25 years! -- is wildly disproportionate. But "stricter gun laws" has been the (OK, a) rallying cry for Democrats for decades.

So here we are: A man goes into a gun store to buy a weapon. He swears that he's drug-free when he is not. He then takes it home, where his partner finds it after a week or so and throws it out (which itself I suspect is illegal -- can you really just throw a gun into a dumpster where anyone could retrieve it?).

So, folks: You wanted this. You wanted all gun crimes, and especially gun purchases, prosecuted to the hilt. You wanted long sentences for anyone mishandling firearms or lying to evade background checks. Are you happy now?

This whole case is becoming surreal. Today was the first day in my life that I actually thought that Scott Adams might be correct in thinking that we are living in a simulation. Almost all Trump supporters that I know personally (and many of them are personal friends of mine) and who post comments on this blog and other conservative blogs, argued forcefully that Hunter would be acquitted because of his father, the President, and because the fix was in with the DOJ and the deep state to be sure that he would be acquitted. Yet he was found guilty, and could face 25 years in prison as a convicted felon, (which we know will not happen, just like Trump as a convicted felon will never spend a single day of his life in jail.) So when Hunter was found guilty, according to most of the comments I read on conservative web sites today (while I was waiting in my doctor's office), the majority of people who were upset about Hunter's conviction were NOT Biden and liberal Democrat supporters, but the majority of the people who opposed Hunter's conviction were Trump supporters. This is surreal.

The crime is clear and everyone understands how Hunter violated it. That said, I think people on both sides expect and even want a light sentence but for different reasons. 4 might say because he is the President's son. 4 might say because it is his first conviction. 4 might say because it is a dumb law that people only get convicted when related to other more serious crimes.

Lonejustice,

It is because you don't understand what we are writing nor even trying to- you seem to think we hated it because of why, exactly? What we were is surprised by it given the jurisdiction, but many of us disagreed with the prosecution for this particular offense for lots of reasons having nothing at all to do with Hunter Biden.

However, what is particularly gaslighting for us is the claim by certain commentators that this verdict demonstrates non-bias by the DoJ, but this is nonsense- the DoJ never wanted to bring this case and tried to plea it down to no jail time and minimal fines with an understanding that Hunter Biden would get a pass on all the other charges that are now pending against him. The judge who had to approve the plea agreement is the only person who is responsible for the DoJ not being able to let Hunter Biden off with a slap on the wrist- that and Hunter Biden's stupidity in demanding a trial when he could have easily just agreed that the other charges would not be part of the plea- the DoJ was never going to move forward with those cases absent Biden's refusal of the plea agreement.

Had that judge not questioned that plea agreement, Hunter Biden would have skated completely on all the charges for which he was being investigated- all of them, and at the direction of his father's DoJ. Can you at least admit that was the case since the evidence for that is overwhelming?

Jimmy said...
