"Freedom is everything. Freedom is everything. The first freedom, I guess, is your health."

"Then freedom to think, to express yourself. Financial freedom. If you are true to yourself, you are free.... I’m true to myself. I mean, sometimes I feel insecure. Sometimes I feel like a fucking loser, and I say, 'I’m a loser!' But only losers don’t feel like losers."

Said Diane von Furstenberg, quoted in the New Yorker interview, "Diane von Furstenberg Will See You Now/The fashion icon is still starring in the story of her life, dispensing wisdom on our age of prudishness, the 'three types of women,' and why 'only losers don’t feel like losers.'"

The 3 types of women are — she's a fashion designer — "women who like to show their waist, women who like to be loose, and women who like to be very tight, like a sausage."

The first freedom being health seems to me to be the perspective of someone who has health. You can still exercise your freedom of thought and, one hopes, expression from your hospice bed.

Women are nothing, women are loose, or women are tight.

Got it!

I'm going to try that at the single bar.

"Tight. Tight. Nothing. Tight. Loose!

Very nice article. Read it all. Learned much about DVF. No victimhood. Glass half full.
Only one line about DJT, and it was concerning 40 years ago.
Did AA, in her NYC years, ever meet DVF, I wonder?

Cheers all!

Yeah, really fucking profound.

American women don't have a problem with prudery. Gawd knows a little Comstockery would go a long way toward making the Arts interesting again. What plagues America's better half is people like Diane von Fürstenberg along with all the other desiccated hags who marry into wasted aristocracy just to acquire the von.

Exhibit A why this is the worst song on earth.

Now sing those 'lyrics' in the voice of a fat, sloppy, drug-addicted Joe-Cocker-in-a-dress and they don't get any better.

Help me out. Why on earth would women or anyone else admire fashion designers to the point of reading fawning articles in the New Yorker?

Sure, I read interviews with colonels and generals. Some really are too stupid to hold their positions, but all have some degree of national merit. But a fashion designer? It boggles the mind.

Anything von Furstenburg would have to say would principally be of interest to NYT reading AWFLs and other sorts of that ilk. Rich White people problems aren't my problem. Let 'em eat cake and gossip whilst the proles, antifa, and immigrants work on building guillotines.

The model, the Slut, and the bottom trans/neo-gender in progressive order of freedom. Not every woman, or man who identifies as the feminine gender, will lose themselves in liberal state.

Reminds me of an article posted here, perhaps a few months ago, about women feeling some professional self-doubt which was referred to as 'impostor syndrome.' The tone of that article seemed to be trying to reassure women that they had no reason to feel doubt. It seemed like the author of that article thought the way to deal with those negative emotions was through a Stuart Smalley program of affirmation from others and self-affirmation. It seems like Von Furstenberg would disagree and say it is natural to experience some anxiety like that and let that motivate you to get actual accomplishment. Of the two positions the latter seems like the better advice. Participation trophies are bad for kids and they are bad for adults too.

I'd have to classify Althouse as a loose woman - strictly within the fashion sense of course.

Jamie,
Mon petit chou!

(Many many years ago, a french teen girl of my acquaintance surprised me with the expression "vachement chouette". Which, literally, is nonsense, but was apparently then-current slang for "very sweet/nice/kind". Go figure. And now I'm old enough to have a CABG of my own!)

Freedom is measured in degrees. The first is mind. The second is body. The third is association.

Has Althouse ever done the Slut Walk? Perhaps a model on the right end of the fashion spectrum.

@doctrev, what about a US Army general who was also a fashion designer?

Actually I should note that that particular fashion designer was a Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel at the time he designed that uniform.

Freud was not even a fraud, he was merely a theorist. He didn't realize how completely full of shit he was, he actually imagined that his mechanistic models of human psychology might have some validity. He was completely wrong about almost everything, but he did have a valid insight into the question of what women want. But I think Mick Jagger's analysis resolves the problem that Freud merely identified; "Everything on Earth you can possibly imagine".

Jupiter বলেছেন...

But this raises the question, why is it problematic what women want? Is it somehow obvious what men want? I mean, "everything on Earth that you can possibly imagine", right?

Jupiter বলেছেন...

I remember a line from a book I read in my youth. Nelson Algren, I think, "The Man With The Golden Arm". He was writing about the difficulties that a certain young woman encountered, in the course of her work as a prostitute, and he said "For the things that the young men wanted did not exist".

Now, of course, he is using the word "want" in its modern sense of "desire". It originally meant to lack. As in, "He wants sense". And in that sense, the things that the young men wanted do, most assuredly, exist. It is the things they desire that do not exist.

---Only Women know women. We men just get to love them.

Isn't it incredible that they love us? How unlikely is that! Nature's genius, perhaps; or something greater -- a proof of God's existence. Deus in machina.
