"I challenge you, Elon, to watch the whole interview and tell the world why this isn’t what you claim you want on X."

Said Don Lemon, introducing the interview, which you can watch below, quoted in "5 key moments from Elon Musk’s interview with Don Lemon/The X owner resists responsibility for the hate speech on the social media platform" (WaPo).

I think WaPo's idea "5 key moments" leans toward Lemon: "Musk resists responsibility for hate speech on X....Musk experiences depressive episodes.... Musk described his meeting with Donald Trump.... America needs to ‘move on’ from racism, Musk says.... Musk rejects the idea that the ‘buck stops’ with him."

I watched the "Great Replacement" segment, and based on that, I'd say Lemon was straining for a gotcha against Elon Musk. Both men speak awkwardly, in different ways, so the conversation is unpleasant (the polar opposite of, say, The Joe Rogan Experience):

How dare musk say we must move on from racism.
that bastard!

Lemon says -- Keep racism alive!

(White left Lemon would also like some of Musk's big money and perks + massages)

the interview is fine. That lemon thinks it's a bombshell is lame.

Not sure why anyone would give Lemon - or any fascist leftist - a chance.
Leftist fascists do not deserve what they have - they are mini-Putins.

Doesn't Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act explicitly say that Musk is not (legally) responsible for "hate speech" (whatever that is) on X?

Mike (MJB Wolf) বলেছেন...

Yes the interview was described as "awkward to watch" elsewhere, mostly because Lemon is too dense to understand what Musk says about free speech. Lemon appears to not understand the difference between a CNN and a social media platform, between generating content and allowing creators to post their own opinions. In addition he kept saying "but you delete child porn" as some weird gotcha, even though Musk patiently explains the difference between allowing "what is illegal" and moderation of content being "censorship" by the social media site.

Two-eyed Jack বলেছেন...

The clips I have seen looked like a failed job interview, where Lemon somehow didn't realize that he was the one under examination.

Shorter lemon: We must lower standards for Surgeons - because racism.

Good thinking!

Lets lower standards for Boeing engineers and techs. hahahahaha - just kidding. Like that would ever happen.

Notable for Lemon, since he's supposedly a TV journalist and ought to be good at this sort of thing. But I suppose he was more an anchor than an interviewer. That also suggests why whatever it was he is trying to do online as a solo act is unlikely to amount to much.

There are other ways to be responsible than legally.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Lemon was reliant on cards someone had prepared for him. He didn't flow with the answers at all. He didn't seem even to want to get into a conversation.

Lemon is of no interest to this reader.

RCOCEAN II বলেছেন...

First, there is no such thing as "hate speech". There's just speech people like or don't like.

2nd - The items that WaPo focuses on, are just want you'd expect. they hate the idea the Elon Musk, who's not part of their liberal/left club, owns a social media company. They hate they idea that he believes in Free Speech and doesn't want to work with the rest of the media in banning speech the liberal/left establishment dislikes.

3rd - Don Lemon is a terrible interviewer. But then large numbers of media personalities are bad at interviews. I'll take him over Mike Wallace who constantly interupts and gives his own opinions. At least it was an interview and not a debate.

Yancey Ward বলেছেন...

That is what struck me, too- Lemon was apparently inexperienced at conducting interviews. I never watched him on CNN, so I wasn't really prepared for that lack of ability. Was he just a talking head on CNN, or simply the host for other people talking to each other? Watching that interview with Musk doesn't induce me to watch any other interview conducted by Lemon. As for the cards- I don't mind those very much, but it was very apparent that he wasn't intimately familiar with what was on them, which means that he probably didn't write them himself.

Of course, it is hilarious that Lemon is imploring Musk to watch the entire interview since Musk already seen it in its entirety- he was a participant. Lemonhead.

wildswan বলেছেন...

I watched the first ten minutes and felt that Lemon wasn't a good interviewer. Besides an evident tendency to reach for a gotcha, he seemed dazed by disagreement. There was a segment on whether CNN leaned left in which Lemon was startled by Elon Musk's statement that Twitter had leaned left. Lemon asked why Musk thought that and when Musk answered that 99% of Twitter staff donations to a political party went to Democrats, Lemon seemed unable to grasp what Musk was talking about. It went somewhat like this. "Donations?" "Yes, donations by the staff." "You mean donations by the company?"; "Donations by the staff." It was tedious listening to Lemon and, even if we suppose he was deflecting in some approved lefty way, it wasn't interesting to listen to him appearing to be first ignorant and then obtuse. And there were cheap shots - pretending Musk was MAGA supporter. The show's boring. When life hands you a lemon and you make lemonade, you add water, sugar and mint, not stale beer and cheap wine.

Bob Boyd বলেছেন...

He didn't seem even to want to get into a conversation.

He was afraid. Lemon was seriously overmatched intellectually. Most would be. For Lemon, getting into a hostile interview with Elon Musk is like climbing into the ring with Mike Tyson. Lemon was lucky to get out of there with both ears.

hugh42 বলেছেন...

Lemon, so slow.

Humperdink বলেছেন...

The term "Hate speech" - the great canard of our time. Having said that, I'm all for policing hate speech, if I am the policeman. And the lefty commenters on this site won't get that.

Breezy বলেছেন...

Musk labeling Lemon as someone who wants censorship, while Musk doesn’t, was a great moment in the interview. Lemon doesn’t get it at all. Why would Musk, who is cultivating a free speech platform, want to partner with someone who doesn’t understand the main mission of X, including the legal and illegal contours of free speech?

Joe Smith বলেছেন...

I saw the initial clips and I was embarrassed for Lemon.

He is so far out of his depth. It's well beyond the chess/checkers analogy.

That fact that Lemon was terminated unmistakably says that this is not what Musk wanted.

Joe Smith বলেছেন...

'Lemon was reliant on cards someone had prepared for him. He didn't flow with the answers at all. He didn't seem even to want to get into a conversation.'

We are a fucked up society and the 'news' business is a sham.

Lemon makes millions of dollars a year just for speaking words written by somebody else. He's not smart. He is politically biased. And he uses his race to ward off criticism and to promote his career.

We are a nation of mid-wit Don Lemons...

He met with some disagreement and a lot of mocking.

James K বলেছেন...

"There are other ways to be responsible than legally."

Of course, which is why I specified legally. But any other kind of responsibility is voluntary. He can choose to accept some kind of moral responsibility, but he's not obliged to do so. The word "responsibility" implies some kind of obligation which is not present here.

Unfortunately, our governments at all levels have also bought into the same bullshit.

Lemon is sooooooo dumb.

These lefty "journalists" cannot enhance their reputations with positivity or hard investigative work. They try to do it with phony "sources" or gotcha interviews. It is a technique that apparently appeals to other lefties, but occurs as painfully, transparently, simple-minded to thinking people.

That seems to be the same page Musk is on. I like Morgan Freeman.

It took one interview for Elon to realize why Don was no longer employed.

Elon cannot just have "voices from the left" on Twitter to achieve balance. He must find such voices coupled with an ability to reason and debate.

The problem is so much of the left's agenda is fundamentally unreasonable and unable to withstand debate.

Darkisland বলেছেন...

I have no desire to watch Don Lemon do anything. I do see a lot of moaning about how Musk "fired" Lemon over the interview because he asked awkward questions.

NY Post said that Lemon wanted

A Tesla truck
$8mm yr salary
$5mm signing bonus
Stock in X
Editorial control not only over his show but over all news on X.

My first thought was that if he is going to get $13mm his first year, why can't he buy his own truck?

Second thought was that, although Lemon has much to be modest about, he is not

Third thought, does anyone besides Musk own any equity/stock in X? My understanding is that he has 100%. Why would he give any to a ham and egger like Lemon?

Editorial control? Lemon misses the whole point. It is about free speech. There is, and should never be, any editorial control by anyone except over themselves.

Yeah, I know, there is some doubt about whether the Post story is true. I have no idea. On the one hand: Newspaper, so fake. On the other: Don Lemon so dense enough to be true. I'm going to believe it until I have reason not to.

Lemon is obnoxiously gay, black, and possessing a pretty face. That is the sum total of his credentials as a journalist, and so far, he's been able to parlay that into a career in the woke world. But the woke world has figurative borders, and outside of those, he's really just a tedious, tiresome, uninteresting bore. Sometimes, constructive feedback hurts. We owe Elon a debt for abiding by his standards.

Do we believe Lemon could flow with answers from someone obviously smarter than him?

Musk said that after the interview he realized Lemon would just be CNN on X, programmed by Jeff Zucker.

Don Lemon is a disingenuous idiot. Musk was offering something equal to balance out the success of Tucker on X. But Don Lemon made Musk want to throw up. That's basically it.

Everyone knows what went wrong, and that was Lemon getting combative with Musk. Lemon wanted to pick a fight with Musk because he knew it would gin up his streaming views.

Howard বলেছেন...

I thought the interview was pretty generic. I'm glad to see Lemon trying to be more independent. He was significantly more journalistic than when he was working for CNN, however, he's still pretty shallow. C+

Musk comported himself well as usual. He did flirt with losing his cool towards the end of the interview. B+

I would prefer to have Musk be interviewed by Sam Harris.

Joe Smith বলেছেন...

'He did flirt with losing his cool towards the end of the interview.'

Musk is clearly frustrated by trying to make his points with someone who is so far below him on the intellectual scale.
