Are you caught up in the drama of the Speaker of the House vote?

"Only hours before the vote, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California was still laboring on Tuesday to lock down the support he needed to be elected speaker, with ultraconservative holdouts showing no signs of backing down from what could become a chaotic floor fight at the dawn of the new House Republican majority" (NYT).

UPDATE: Here's the live C-SPAN feed as the House begins the first day of the 118th Congress.

I'm sure the NYT wishes there was drama.

Good. Fight it out. Let's have some MAGA GOP Republicans that represent the people.

And I don't care what Trump says about Kevin McCarthy. He tried placating the swamp before, and there is no satisfying them.

Make McCarthy promise not to blow Mitch McConnell. If he can't do that, make Jim Jordan Speaker.

Good.

The GOP brought this on itself. It has spent years pissing on the base and the conservative wing of the party, and a string of awful GOP speakers (Hastart, Boehner, Ryan) have burned any accumulated trust. McConnell's betrayal over the budget was a direct snub of the House GOP, and may very well cost McCarthy the Speakership, both by generating anger on the right, and removing a tool from McCarthy's toolbox which could have been leveraged to win over support.

I go with Trump for speaker.

I don't care at all. Our politician class is corrupt and broken.
What diff does it make at this point?

If McCarthy had any shame, he would admit that he didn't earn the Speakership. He promised absurd gains and failed to achieve them.

Only to the extent that it might make a democrat speaker. Isn't that what happens if all dems vote for the same person but the repubs split their vote?

When NPR News comes on the radio, I usually turn it off. Even though the irritating smugness of their tones got reduced during Trump's term in office. Some of the "reporters" sound like they are still in high school and one sounds more like junior high.

But I surprised myself this morning when their Speaker-election story came on as the 2nd item and I turned it off, telling the black box, "No one is interested in this."

Yes. I even wrote to my Congress Critter to voice concern, and I see he is one of the hold-outs. At some point business as usual must end, hopefully before a real insurrection makes Jan 6 look as silly as it is.

Aggie said...

IF McCarthy has to cede ground grudgingly, instead of forming a coalition that represents what the voters want, then he shouldn't be there. Business-as-usual is a construct of the uni-party, and is therefore not in the interests of sound governance.

Wait 'till Trump announces he's considering a third party run.

wendybar said...

No. The Uniparty will win, and they will all go along to get along, and hasten the bankruptcy of this country as fast as possible.

The base is trying to avoid another Paul Ryan scenario. That episode sucked hard. McCarthy should not have stepped aside then and it’s affecting him now.

Not caught up in this or anyone else's drama so far in '23.

I'm really not. I don't care. I think it'll be a circular firing squad for most of the next 2 years anyway, with many Repubs looking to start some much needed investigations, but...knowing the entire country is tired of investigations and that the media will not give any of it any air, other Repubs will work against it. As for new laws? Hell...to me it's a good day if Congress is closed for the day. New laws? I'd rather keep it at the solid 400 million or so that we already have. Let's just see if we can all follow and enforce the ones we have. Let's start with the border.

What I AM concerned about is who is going to run the RNC going forward. I do not want any more of Ronna Romney McDaniel. Too much Romney in her. I'd love to see Harmeet Dhillon take that thing over. I think that would have a much larger impact on the party and the nation- long term, than the next Speaker will.

I vote for Justin.

@justinamash
I’m not a current member of Congress, but I do know what’s at stake. I’d gladly serve as speaker of the House for one term to show people the kind of legislative body we can have if someone at the top actually cares about involving every representative in the work of legislating.

Heh. I’m sorry Dave but I can’t do that…

To combine posts I predict House will blah blah hearings blah blah subpoena. Democrats will use the opportunity to publicly defy and insult House Republicans. Nothing will come of it…

…then House will pass a few meaningful bills that the Senate and media will ignore. Then House will feign objection to the Budget resolutions then cave to demands of the Senate and vote for the CR and the bloated budget in order to ‘keep Washington moving’. They will say this as if we believe this is a matter of life and death…as they do…

Going from one of the Congresses strongest (if not the strongest) speakers of the House and a woman no less, which so many just can't stand gets shit done speaker to the weakest spineless candidates in McCarthy groveling with the likes of Bobbert and Marge and the child trafficker Gaetz. No governing aspect in sight for next two years. It's an embarrassment to the country and will reap its harvest on the weary citizens as NOTHING gets done. Meanwhile Sleepy Joe and Moscow Mitch going to tout all the bi-partisan work they got done in last 2 years and shows the drastic contrast with those who get shit done and the ones that never do. The circus is in town, and I cancelled my ticket it's an embarrassment to this great country I served (65-72) sad but I have seen worse than this as I cruise toward my 80's. Sometimes people do get what they deserve.

I live in Caliunicornia and - IMHO - the Rs need to elect a SOTH that has a better grasp of the issues and has actually shown leadership capabilities in the past.

Kevin McCarthy doesn’t qualify

Good idea!
Gym Jordan does love a good bj but doesn’t he need it to be underage and a little more rapey?
Like the bjs he oversaw in his Ohio State locker room as wrestling coach?

If McCarthy wanted to be a shoo-in for Speaker then he and Tom Emmer needed to work harder last September and October.

Don't love McCarthy; don't care if he crashes in flames. Although the fallacious references to fellatio by some of the commenters here makes me wonder if there's something really wrong with the country today.

cubanbob said...

McCarthy as mentioned above is not the guy. We need someone who will push the reforms the MAGA base elected a majority Republican House. If that means shutting the government down until the 2024 elections that's fine as well. Spending starts in the House, not the White House and not the Senate. The only truly essential departments needed are defense, state, justice ( which needs massive reform)and the courts. Everything else is optional. The starting point is the amount spent in 2019 as the cap work their way down.

I agree with you DD. What she "got done" was shit. She orchestrated the fake riot at the Capitol by banning support and probably setting up FBI agents provocateur. The country is headed to national bankruptcy, the military has been destroyed from within. The sad husk pretending to be president is another triumph for the uniparty which will take us all down soon.

Andrew said...

Ditto to wendybar.

This is one time that I will agree with Hillary Clinton:
"What difference, at this point, does it make?"

We simply do not have an opposition party. We have one party that is hellbent on driving the country off a cliff.

wendybar said...

Exactly Michael K. Nancy did a GREAT job helping to fundamentally change America for the Messiah of the left. They are all getting rich, whilst America is suffering, and they just don't care. How many mansions do the Obamas own now?? "AT some point, you have made enough money"....right Barry? Unless you are a lying thieving Congresscritter.

It's like another dull corporate movie I know I don't need to watch.

Trump was a genius disinfectant, we needed him to revive shining possibilities for our future.

But I guess it was too late: with our institutions feverishly revising freedoms and norms, and globalized interests deeply enmeshed in our federal police state as well as addicted to Communist China's police state, what could one man do?

I calculate our American civilization ended nov. 6 2020. We still have a great view from the top of this golden wave called America, but our ride down will be cruel & bruising.

like i said, I can't watch.

No. I'm going outside to play with my dog. Yogi. That's the name he came with.

If the House could select an outsider as speaker, then it could select Vladimir Putin or a foreigner or a teenager or whatever. It's ridiculous. Plus the Constitution states that “[t]he House of Representatives shall choose from among their number their speaker.” Plus there is over 200 years of precedent. So Trump is out.

Nope. Not paying attention to it at all.
