The most delightfully layered accusation of fake news.

He doesn't favor the NYT with a link, just a screen grab.

To read the actual NYT article, here: "Elon Musk, in a Tweet, Shares Link From Site Known to Publish False News/The tweet on Sunday, which was later deleted, posted an article that made baseless allegations about the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband."

First, I have a problem with the phrase "baseless allegations." You shouldn't add the word "baseless" to "allegations" unless you have determined that the allegations are based on nothing. Has the NYT done that? Or is it simply showing its bias?

On Saturday, Hillary Clinton, the former first lady and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, posted a tweet assailing Republicans for spreading “hate and deranged conspiracy theories” that she said had emboldened the man who attacked Ms. Pelosi’s husband, Paul, inside the couple’s home in San Francisco early Friday.

Why not call that a "baseless allegation"? Hillary was only speculating about what motivated DePape. Musk was reacting to what she started:

In a reply to Mrs. Clinton’s tweet, Mr. Musk wrote, “There is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye” and then shared a link to an article in the Santa Monica Observer.

The main thing Musk did there was ding Clinton for throwing out baseless speculation. He was emboldened — just kidding, he seems to have felt emboldened — to swing wildly because he was swinging back at her wild swing. She wielded the hammer of self-serving accusation and he grabbed it and demonstrated how badly you can hurt someone with it.

The article alleges that Mr. Pelosi was drunk and in a fight with a male prostitute.

Oh, my lord, now the vivid allegation is right there in the NYT. It was fit to print. Why?! Because Musk merely pointed at it in a tweet that was — as I read it — designed to tell Hillary Clinton to back off with the political propaganda.

Mr. Musk’s tweet was later deleted, and it was not immediately clear who had deleted it.

But this is a news story. Musk linked to something, then deleted it. I'm inclined to speculate that the reason the NYT is elevating this story is that the drunk-fight-with-a-male-prostitute story is not beyond the pale. It needs to be rendered toxic so no one will pass it around. Don't dare say it!

And that's not going to work. The NYT cannot control the narrative and its effort to control the narrative will embolden — just kidding, may embolden — the purveyors of the the drunk-fight-with-a-male-prostitute story.

A 2021 editorial in The Los Angeles Times about websites that “masquerade as legitimate local newspapers” noted that the Santa Monica Observer, “owned by onetime City Council candidate David Ganezer, is notorious for publishing false news.”

Notice that the Times does not directly impugn the Santa Monica Observer. It craftily relies on a quote from the L.A. Times. Is the quote itself fake news? Well, the Times is only technically on the hook if the L.A. Times didn't print those exact words.

Is the Santa Monica Observer "notorious for publishing false news"? It defends itself here. The L.A. Times accusation isn't "baseless" — it's based a report by an entity known as NewsGuard, which purports to rate newspapers according to how well they separate news from politics.

If NewsGuard rated the Santa Monica Observer poorly, that's supposed to be a reason why there's something wrong with Musk gesturing at it? But Musk's pointing at it was for the purpose of pushing back Hillary Clinton for jamming the Pelosi story into a Democratic Party political narrative!

By the way, in the NYT story itself, I see some evidence that would support the Santa Monica Observer narrative and not the Hillary Clinton narrative:

The police have said that Mr. Pelosi, 82, was attacked with a hammer inside his home by a man, David DePape, who had entered through the back door.

That does not say DePape broke in. Why would you write "had entered through the back door" rather than broke in through the back door? It suggests the man was allowed in. And "attacked with a hammer inside his home" places the man inside the home without addressing why he is there. We begin in medias res. What was going on? I suspect the NYT knows more than it's putting in writing. It's being cagey!

The police have said that when they arrived at the home, they found the two men wrestling for control of a hammer. The authorities have said that Mr. DePape, 42, would probably face several charges, including attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon.

So he hasn't been charged yet? Why not? And the charges you're picturing are attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon. Why not breaking and entering?

How did DePape get into the house? At least say it's unknown how he got into the house... unless it's not unknown. Something seems to be missing here.

The NYT story stirs up doubts, even as it demands that we see the drunk-fight-with-a-male-prostitute story as baseless. There's at least the report that both men were in their underpants! And that DePape allowed Mr. Pelosi to go into the bathroom by himself.

At one point, Mr. DePape is said to have shouted, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?”

Why the passive voice there?! Who said DePape shouted, “Where is Nancy? Where is Nancy?” It's a convenient detail in support of the Hillary Clinton narrative, making the attack seem of-a-piece with the January 6th riot, so we need to know who said it was said, not simply that it was said to have been seen.

Great tweet by Elon Musk, deftly knocking Hillary Clinton's message askew.

Why would you write "had entered through the back door"

At the moment, there is far more evidence supporting Musk's baseless conspiracy theories than there is The Times' mainstream reporting.

I will point out that it was 47 degrees in San Francisco that early morning. A question none of these "journalists" seems to have asked is "How did DePape get to the Pelosi house that night in his underwear?" Did he drive there? Did he take the bus? Did he take a taxi or an Uber?

As Althouse notes, the description of the entry is lacking in actual detail. When that is done in today's newspapers, it is almost always done because the details undercut the desired narrative being pushed.

I would watch to see what happens to the case. I strongly suspect one of two things happens- (1) DePape commits "suicide" while in custody or, (2) the charges are dropped in return for custody mental health treatment.

This is the power (or danger depending on your pov) of not having all of the major media companies in lock step support of the same agenda. If twitter talks about Hunter’s laptop or this story, it forces the other media companies to cover it too.

Whether it’s a top down conspiracy or a just a side effect of having nearly all journalists on the same side of the political isle, we have gotten to the point that all journalism is crafted through the lens of “how will this impact Democrats?”. I think that may start to change now.

I can't get enough of the Paul Pelosi story. There is no way with the information (or lack thereof) provided to the public that any sort of real determination of what really happened can be made.

So the Pelosis and the authorities have a choice. Release ALL of the information (police reports, video, etc) to prove the current narrative, or keep the secrets and let everyone speculate that PP is gay, there were drugs involved, it wasn't really a "break-in", etc. etc.

Come clean or the rumor mill will be in full force.

Here's my speculation . . . others get to assess the extent to which it is "baseless."

So Pelosi identifies "David" as his "friend" which, maybe, means that he's been there before.

David knows Pelosi. That he is married. That his wife's name is Nancy.

Not wanting Nancy to interrupt their activities, David wonders if Nancy is in the house, in Washington, or some other location . . . "Where's your wife? Where's Nancy?"

He's not "hunting" Nancy. Not looking to harm her. Rather, looking to avoid he and Paul being caught, as our host might say, in flagrante delicto.

Interesting that the accusation stated- of a 'drunk fight with a male prostitute'- was my first gut reaction on your original post of this 'event' a few days ago. It may not be what took place. And it may indicate that I've gone far over to some dark side to even think like this, but I've been trained to do so by the 'facts' that haven't been facts for years now. And why is there so much gathering around an 'official' narrative to this story, with very little of it answering the growing list of questions? The narrative seemed to take place almost immediately, and did not make any sense. None.

>Did the police actually break in?
>If not, who stopped to open the door for them?
>Why no security videos available to clear this all up- external or internal?
>Who gets to take a 'bathroom break' in the middle of an break-in and assault?
>Why was the perpetrator referred to as 'friend'?
>Why did the police go there on a wellness call and not an emergency- house broken into, man being assaulted- call?
>Why did the police just...kinda watch things and not jump in until Paul Pelosi's head got bashed in?
>Did Paul Pelosi's head actually get bashed in? Or is this a fluffing up of the actual story to take the eye off the ball?

I wouldn't ask these things in a normal break-in with assault. But these are the Pelosi's, this is San Francisco, and it's a week before the election. It just all smells.

Eli is not going to give anyone, particularly the Hillary Mouth, any more free space to just continue to nurture one narrative.

Gee the story was getting pretty interesting and then Nancy got back to SF and suddenly things changed. The cops “revise” their statements with no explanation how they changed from the mysterious third person opening the door when they knocked to “only two people were present,” but offered no bodycam footage to support the new detail. Then the local Fox station “was forced” to retract the detail about both men being in their underwear when cops arrived. Again, no proof of either assertion is provided. All we know for certain is lately when Nancy Pelosi is out of town Paul keeps finding trouble that involve mystery people whose presence is never explained, whose identity the cops (CHP, SFPD etc.) exhibit zero curiosity about even though Paul is ostensibly married to the most powerful woman on earth.

And we are supposed to accept these shitty poorly constructed cover stories? Why’s Paul keep ending up needing cops to rescue him and obscure what he’s up to?

Ms. Althouse uses a (I believe) baseball metaphor, "swinging wildly," to describe the recent events in chez Pelosi.
Another apt metaphor is the "free play" in football, when the QB notes a defensive player offside and audibles a long pass play. The QB knows that if the pass is caught, he gets a long gain, but if it's dropped or even intercepted, he gets a do-over.
The completed pass here is that Mr. D actually is Paul P's gay lover, or drug supplier.
The dropped pass is that Mr D is a rando with mental health issues (this requires the "Where's Nancy" to be fiction).
The interception is that Mr D is the local Republican Party chairman. Just kidding, there is no local R party, and Elon does not throw interceptions. Even if he did, the more people talk and blog about Nancy and Paul, the better it is for America, and Elon gets the do-over.

If "false news" is the standard, then that would eliminate the New York Times as being quotable. Actually, it would eliminate ALL media sources that did not start yesterday, as they all get bamboozled from time to time, some more than others and some more enthusiastic about being fooled.

As for the "baseless" part, this is part and parcel of the mainstream media. One source will claim that such and such story is false without actually proving it false, then all the other media sources will quote that story to prove the story is discredited/debunked. It is like the xkcd cartoon when Wikipedia puts forth some nonsense, the false information gets used in a published article, and then the published article becomes the source to justify the Wikipedia article. It is the circle of BS.

And, as expected, the "facts" of the event keep changing. Whether the original reports were incorrect or whether the "facts" are being massaged for the desired narrative are unclear, but as usual the media jumped to conclusions that matched their narrative, the facts be damned. Just another reason to distrust the mainstream media.

Taub of David DePape: “He is mentally ill. He has been mentally ill for a long time. He came back in very bad shape. He thought he was Jesus. He was constantly paranoid, thinking people were after him. And it took a good year or two to get back to, you know, being halfway normal.” If he ever did.

This is one of the most strangest stories of the year (and it has been a strange year). First, both men were in their underwear and a third-party let the police in. Now, neither were in their underwear (what were they wearing?) and there was no third party present (where was the usual security?).

Will we find out what this is all about before or after the facts are discovered regarding the leak of the Dobbs decision? The future Times and Post can rail at those who exhibit toxic partisanship in looking at these relatively unimportant topics in a world on the brink of nuclear annihilation. Things fall apart.

DePape is crazy as are the stories about him.....The MSM is highlighting details about the entry that are similar to details about the 1/6 rioters. DePape had zip ties and shouted "Where's Nancy" after his entry. The msm claims that this makes him a 1/6 rioter and a person who had been influenced by Trump's rhetoric to act out his anger....There's no doubt that DePape's crazy brain was influenced by the zeitgeist and that Trump and 1/6 were part of the zeitgeist. However, the MSM tactfully doesn't mention all of the other crazy parts of his behavior that are far more typical of the loony left than of 1/6 rioters......Paul Pelosi is extremely wealthy and an octogenarian. I don't think he had a sudden impulse at 2:30AM to call on the services of a gay prostitute. If he had such a need, I don't think he would call on the services of DePape. DePape looks kind of low rent. DePape himself doesn't look like the kind of guy who could negotiate the ins and outs of being a gay prostitute.... I don't think we know the full story, but the story about this being some kind of gay tryst gone awry is not it.

1: Very nice deconstruction of this article
2: First, I have a problem with the phrase "baseless allegations." You shouldn't add the word "baseless" to "allegations" unless you have determined that the allegations are based on nothing. Has the NYT done that? Or is it simply showing its bias?

Simply showing their bias. It is a standard trope among the dishonest Left. They add the word "baseless" or the phrase "without evidence" any time the situation is that they're afraid to confront the basis or evidence of the charge

3: Why not call that a "baseless allegation"? Hillary was only speculating about what motivated DePape
Because in the world of the NYT, only things that hurt the Left are ever "baseless" or "without evidence"

4: The article alleges that Mr. Pelosi was drunk and in a fight with a male prostitute.
Thank you, NYT, (and an actual think you to Althouse) for letting me know what the claim is. I've been working hard to avoid getting into the parts of the story that require brain bleach, so I had not before seen that explicitly stated.

5: I'm inclined to speculate that the reason the NYT is elevating this story is that the drunk-fight-with-a-male-prostitute story is not beyond the pale. It needs to be rendered toxic so no one will pass it around. Don't dare say it!
Welcome to the Streisand effect.
Personally, actions like the NYT's pretty much always act to encourage me to spread the info

6: And that's not going to work. The NYT cannot control the narrative and its effort to control the narrative will embolden — just kidding, may embolden — the purveyors of the the drunk-fight-with-a-male-prostitute story.

And that is why the Left so has its panties in a twist about Musk buying Twitter

Because they could do that with the entirely truthful "Hunter Biden Laptop" story. But only because Twitter was willing to act as an enforcer for the Left.

The fact that Twitter won't be embargoing the story means the Left's censorship powers are dying

For weeks the NYT's continued to print this as fact, based on "Sources in the Police". It also printed, without any pushback, various Pols repeating the same thing. For MONTHS!

Of course, it later came out that ZERO policeman were killed by the Jan 6th protesters. One policeman had a heart attack in the police station, 6 hours after the protest ended. The NYT's simply made it up.

Given that, I don't believe ANYTHING the NYT's writes based on "Sources" or "People familiar with the situation". GIve us the police department report, given us 911 tape, give us the reason why the suspect has not been charged.

He leaves the key under the carpet stairs outside the apartment. At the time of the planned murder, he's at a party with his wife's lover, which gives him an alibi. The attempted murder goes awry when Grace Kelly kills the would-be assassin in self-defense. Ray Milland then rearranges the evidence to make it appear that the dead man had been blackmailing Grace Kelly and she let him into the apartment. Grace Kelly claims that he must have broken into the apartment. The inspector says that there's no sign of a break-in and believes that she let him in herself. At the end, everything is figured out.

No wonder the obama's wanted so much for their daughter Malia to work directly with Harvey Weinstein, who was a long time/big time pal of the Clinton's.

From the affidavit:

For the reasons set forth below, I submit that there is probable cause to believe that DEPAPE violated the following: Title 18 U.S.C. §§ 115(a)(1)(A) by assaulting Paul Pelosi, an immediate family member of a United States official, to wit, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, with intent to retaliate against such official on account of the performance of official duties; and Title 18 U.S.C. § 1201(d) by attempting to seize or kidnap a United States official, to wit, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
...
10. At 2:31 a.m., San Francisco Police Department (“SFPD”) Officer Colby Wilmes
responded to the Pelosi residence, California and knocked on the front door. When the door was
opened, Pelosi and DEPAPE were both holding a hammer with one hand and DEPAPE had his
other hand holding onto Pelosi’s forearm. Pelosi greeted the officers. The officers asked them
what was going on. DEPAPE responded that everything was good. Officers then asked Pelosi
and DEPAPE to drop the hammer.

DEPAPE pulled the hammer from Pelosi’s hand and swung the hammer, striking
Pelosi in the head. Officers immediately went inside and were able to restrain DEPAPE. While
...
e. DEPAPE stated that they went downstairs to the front door. The police arrived and knocked on the door, and Pelosi ran over and opened it. Pelosi grabbed onto DEPAPE’s hammer, which was in DEPAPE’s hand. At this point in the interview, DEPAPE repeated that DEPAPE did not plan to surrender and that he would go “through” Pelosi.

So, the story is that DePape knew that Pelosi had called the police, and let him go open the door when the police knocked, but then somehow magically got over there and attacked Pelosi, while the cops did nothing (this is all happening right at the door that Pelosi opened), and Pelosi never bothered to go through the door he'd opened so as to have police protection from the hammer wielding maniac?

This is your idea of a good story?

So he hasn't been charged yet? Why not? And the charges you're picturing are attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon. Why not breaking and entering?

They said there were several charges and the two mentioned were "included". Presumably these two were considered by the author/editor to be most important.

From the SF Police blog:
"DePape will be booked for attempted homicide (664/187 PC), first-degree burglary (459 PC), violent felony enhancement (667.5(c)(21) PC), assault with a deadly weapon (245(a)(1)PC), aggravated battery with serious bodily injury (243(d) PC), elder abuse (368(b)(1) PC), inflict great bodily injury on elderly (12022.7(c) PC), dissuading a victim (136.1(b)(1) PC), threatening public official, or family member (76(a) PC), and damaging or preventing a communication for an emergency call (591.5 PC)." [Emphasis mine]

I don't know the technicalities here, but I assume 1st degree burglary includes breaking an entering. Also, it is possible the police blog did not have a complete list either, but that seems less likely.

"When the door was opened, Pelosi and DEPAPE were both holding a hammer with one hand"/"The police arrived and knocked on the door, and Pelosi ran over and opened it." While he and DePape were "both holding a hammer"?

So, Lefties:

1: Where are the pictures showing the inside of where he supposedly broke in?
2: Where's the badycam video?
3: Where's the unreacted 911 call tape?

Do I take the word of an FBI agent?

No, not on any subject. They've gleefully burned their credibility to the ground

Do I accept the unsubstantiated claims of SF cops, after the fact, on an issue of political importance?

Well, I have a simple rule: If someone has access to information (voting documents, body cam, security videos, pictures, etc) and does not release that to back up their claims, it's because their claims are lies.

Or to put it another way: Anyone who says "trust me" is lying

Until the raw data is let out, with nothing other than bluring out parts of the bodies of the people involved, I dont' believe anything they have to say

The biggest lie of all is on the front page of every copy of The New York Times, where it promises "All the News That's Fit to Print." All? Well, of course not. It wouldn't fit. But surely "all the news" means at least all the biggest stories. I'll say just three words: "Hunter's Laptop."
