For Sunday night, I'm taking the TikTok selections all the way to 11. Let me know what you like.

1. What does your dog do when you drop the leash?

2. There's this really creepy bird.

3. The nerve of this thing....

4. Let's tell President Clinton how much we love The Internet.

5. College kids are glued to The Facebook Dot Com.

6. Camille Paglia on pronouns. [ADDED: Linked deleted because the video has been removed. It was a clip from this longer video from 2017.]

7. Trump, the cab driver, talks about nuclear.

8. Perfect Ring-camera joke-telling technique.

9. Using nonsense words to ask AI for images.

10. Creating a weird sound for each state.

11. A tortoise finds love.

I am worried about Camille Paglia. I have not seen any new writing or appearances in 2 years. I have googled.

Inga বলেছেন...

#7

The passenger was very respectful to Trump the Taxi driver pontificating about his vast knowledge of “nuclear”.

Dave Begley বলেছেন...

6 and 10. He nailed Michigan.

Lash LaRue বলেছেন...

#6. Words of wisdom from Camille.

Mary Beth বলেছেন...

I really enjoyed #8. I think I'll have to watch more of those.

I like turtles, but I feel as though I should pretend I didn't see #11.

#4 must be where Anthony Weiner got the idea to encourage internet contact from minors.

#2 was cute-ish, but I'm more interested in the idea of someone sitting down and writing a script to match a video they took of some pigeons. I want to have a conversation with that person.

Curious George বলেছেন...

Most a couldn't watch to the end, but loved "What does your dog do when you drop the leash?"

So sweet.

Bob R বলেছেন...

I would have loved a continuation with Bill Clinton telling the kids all of the really interesting things they could find on the internet.

Creepy bird is absolutely the best use of Tiktok.

Camille Paglia. Always.

I did watch Camille Paglia; so young she looks in that video! One heartily approves of her dismissal of the pronoun nonsense of course. Before I retired, I found myself obliged once or twice to participate in the theatre but in most every circumstance I was able to work around having to use the words falsely. It is true that in some cases I could tell that the client knew I was doing the 'work around'; nobody ever said anything, however.

Baceseras বলেছেন...

This is your best set since I've been reading, and the pigeons take top prize.

Jimmy বলেছেন...

Camille Paglia is one of the few feminists who actually believes in free speech. And agrees with Orwell on the use and abuse of the English language.
She isn't very popular with most feminists, or with totalitarians.

MadisonMan বলেছেন...

#9: Using nonsense words to ask AI for images.
This is an interesting concept, and I would watch more of it.

Tie between the bird, the cabbie and the Facebook

Rory বলেছেন...

I'm gonna guess that the little Boston terrier brings the leash for all their walks.

Old and slow বলেছেন...

Trump the cab driver, Paglia, and I could only wish my dog would do that. He has on occasion slipped his collar or chewed through the leash, and he immediately goes in search of a victim. He's a Chihuahua pitbull mix and only weighs 17 pounds, or I'd have had to put him down years ago... Worst rescue dog EVER, but I love him.

Aggie বলেছেন...

I hate to tell the lady with the pastry in #3, but....in Texas we have shiny green beetles like that, and they have a very apt eponymous name: Dung Beetle.

*********

Years ago, arch-fiend FemiNazi Gloria Steinem famously declared. "We don't give a shit what Camille Paglia thinks."

Of course not.

effinayright বলেছেন...

Inga, imagine the thousands of times you've posted here, then look at the expressions on that passenger's face:

That's us.

Reacting to you.

effinayright বলেছেন...

Alas, my wife and kids regard both my jokes, and my delivery, as being as bad as that guy's.

dawn remade বলেছেন...

#2 is my favorite, as I'm a sucker for that kind of transformative editing. The little arms add so much by themselves - even before the voice acting kicks in!

I agree with Madsionman on #9, would like to see more of those! I'm not familiar with the program that guy is using, but what a neat way to play with it.

The dog at #1 is cute and well trained, and #4 made me laugh - mainly because I've seen longer snippets of the original video on a couple of different comedy youtube review channels.

Paglia Pronounces!

brentfinley বলেছেন...

The dog was cute; I also liked the birds; Camille Paglia is a winner, always interesting.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

I love that dog one

great music in it too

One time I was walking my 2 dogs (110 pounds and 70 pounds), and all of a sudden they got excited by geese and wanted to chase them.

I was wearing moccasins and my feet slid out from under me and I fell on my ass. Dropped both leashes.

My girl dog went flying after the geese. She was gone.

My boy dog, Scout, the golden retriever, he stopped when he realized I was down on my ass, and came back to make sure I was okay.

After he confirmed for himself that I was fine, he went running off to chase the geese.

I am worried about Camille Paglia. I have not seen any new writing or appearances in 2 years. I have googled.

They tried to get rid of her two years ago.

She's still there.

So kudos to her Dean, I guess.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

These people are so polite about bugs on their food.

You know that expression, "he wouldn't harm a fly"?

I kill flies. Don't like them.

And I stomp on roaches. Ugh, I hate roaches.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

creepy bird is great

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

One of the reasons Paglia is so mad is it's personal to her.

She thinks back to her life and feels like she would have been drugged or operated on because she was such a tomboy. She would have suffered awfully in this climate. And she might have done the surgery if it was allowed at the time. Because she didn't know any better.

The doctors who are fucking with children who have not yet reached puberty? That should be a crime.

To be so certain that you permanently alter the body of a healthy child.

"First, do no harm."

These fuckers who throw out the Hippocratic Oath!

The doctors who don't give a shit about medical risks, the cancer they cause from throwing estrogen or other steroids into children, the very high suicide risk from people who go down this route, the numerous people who try to reverse the surgery, ugh.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

I think the pronoun thing offends her from a free speech/artistic perspective (obviously).

But I also think she despises trans ideologues and thinks they are dangerous to children. Or, anyway, she's not afraid of them, that's for sure.

I like the feminists who are certain they know what a woman is and don't give a shit what other people say. Good for them!

Doubt and uncertainty are important but also, among a certain class of people, overrated. It's fine to have faith, to believe in something, to say, "I am a woman" and be an absolutist about it.

Hugo Black used to freak people out by using the word "absolute." And he was absolutely right to do it!

Camille Paglia interview not available.

WTF.

Baceseras বলেছেন...

"The Facebook" - The "the" is so quaint.

Wilbur বলেছেন...

I was amused by the fake earnestness of the CBS News "reporter" explaining The Facebook.com. Things haven't changed much with their "correspondents" since then.

Camille's vid disappeared.

Jeff Gee বলেছেন...

The first three (dog, creepy bird, croissant bug) are great. Camille (now ominously missing) and Trump the cab driver also get a thumbs up. Ring camera guy needs better material.Nonsense word guy was about twice as long as I would have liked but it was interesting. Weird noises for states suffers from the absence of a New Jersey weird noise but Maryland felt right. The turtle reminsd me of the old Warner Brothers cartoon about the dog that fell in love with a cast iron dog statue. The statue was hauled off in a WW II scrap iron drive and melted down for artillery shells. I always found it sad and disturbing.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I deleted the nonfunctioning link. It did look like video that was taken without her knowledge. If it's from something longer that's on YouTube, I'd be very interested.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I found the longer clip on YouTube and put up a link to it in the post.

It's from 2017 — 5 years ago.

michaele বলেছেন...

#4 and 5 brought to mind all the mockery Sen Ted Stevens got some years back when he described the internet as a series of "tubes". Amazing the variety of stuff that is gushing through those tubes nowadays.

Bob R বলেছেন...

I am worried about Camille Paglia. I have not seen any new writing or appearances in 2 years. I have googled.

The last two years have been horrible for traveling and speaking. Paglia is 75, so unless she is in some strange circumstance, she is having to take Required Minimum Distributions. Additional income would get taxed at a relatively high rate. It's very likely that she has no financial incentive to fight the crowds. I hope she is happy and healthy whatever the circumstance.

Mid-Life Lawyer বলেছেন...

It's funny that just last week I was wondering what is happening with Paglia as I haven't seen anything from her in several years. Of course, this was from 2017 so I still haven't, but it's always good to see her pronouncements on cultural idiocies. But that's just a video without embellishments with no creation involved. My favorite creation is the Door Camera guy who I have seen in this video and other videos. His technique as you say is perfect. There is a tie for second between Pigeons and Nuclear Trump.

This is a good way for me to see interesting Tic Toc's without being pulled into the vortex and I appreciate it.

MadisonMan বলেছেন...

You know what struck me about that Write Bill Clinton a Letter video? How white it was.

It's funny to think of how old those kids are now. Add 25 years to all of them!

I know it's a stereotype, how time flies, but it's one of those stereotypes that's absolutely true. The decades kind of fly by.

I've been on the Althouse blog for over a decade I think. Might have missed a few years while I was in film school. And she's just plugging away, every day, easily the most impressive thing about her.

Iron Horse.

lonejustice বলেছেন...

I stopped viewing Althouse TikToks a couple of months ago, thinking they were just plain silly or narcissistic.

However, today I decided to have another look, and I have to admit I liked all of them. But Creepy Bird was my favorite. I watched it at least 5 times! Some of these people have some real talent.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

Thanks for the Spinal Tap reference by the way. Love it!

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

"The Facebook dot com."

LOL

That voice, the voice of authority, sounds so funny now.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

You know what's also amazing?

So many great commentators have left Althouse. And it's always sad. But they are constantly replaced by new commentators, who are also interesting.

Maybe like a baseball analogy. Some retire. But rookies keep coming up. And familiar names are always around. People contributing for free.

Such a fun place.

Some comedian once said that if we took everything Trump said, and we just pretended it was some guy calling into a talk show, and he introduced himself as "Donnie from Queens," we would all love the guy.

I am curious, Anne. How does someone as bright as you allow themself to be one of communism's useful idiots by not just using, but promoting TikTok?

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

I am curious, Anne. How does someone as bright as you allow themself to be one of communism's useful idiots by not just using, but promoting TikTok?

1. She's Ann, not Anne.

2. Communism hasn't been in China in a couple of decades. It's now more like an autocratic dictatorship with a formerly thriving economy with lots of free enterprise, mixed in with heavy socialism and autocratic rulers. Way closer to Fascism than Communism at this point. Marx is dead in China and I don't think they miss him.

3. TikTok has spy ware and I'm glad I can watch these videos here, in the safe space(!) of the Althouse blog, and not worry about those fuckers spying on me. So thanks Althouse for taking the bullet for us. And TikTok is a really cool app, there's a reason it's popular around the world.

4. If China ever has a populist uprising, and the people take charge of the government, I would like to own shares of TikTok. It has a fantastic business model, where people work for free and you don't have to pay them. Similar to the youtube models. One of the best of all business models.

5. Kind of shocking that an American business hasn't tried to rip-off or otherwise compete with TikTok. They have spyware! A lot of people are avoiding the platform because of that!

dawn remade বলেছেন...

I think your #4 point is the answer to #5, Saint Croix! The spyware feature isn't a bug, it's where all the value for the owners comes from in the Tik Tok business model. Anyone who wanted to recreate it without spyware would have to figure out a model that gets them something else in return for it to be worthwhile.

Just like with the New York Times and Washington Post articles, I really appreciate Ann curating and sharing interesting things from TikTok so I don't have to slog through myself. I don't want the app on my phone either, but I also find the way it's designed to be too chaotic to be enjoyable.
