"... President Trump engaged in a massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information to convince huge portions of the U.S. population that fraud had stolen the election."
Said Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, quoted in "'Trump Was at the Center': Jan. 6 Hearing Lays Out Case in Vivid Detail" (NYT).
That seems to be the crucial question: Did Trump genuinely know he had lost the election?
Then there's the idea that's built on that: a big conspiracy to take over the government.
As the chair of the committee, Representative Bennie Thompson, put it: "Donald Trump was at the center of this conspiracy. And ultimately, Donald Trump, the president of the United States, spurred a mob of domestic enemies of the Constitution to march down the Capitol and subvert American democracy."

Can we Assume in 2 years Lizard will run as a democrat; from her home state of North Virginia?
Of course, it's More Likely, that in 2 years people will be all "Lizard Cheney? Ain't she DEAD?"
Also, her True Home state is Madison Wisconsin. She just lives in North Virginia
"Domestic enemies of the Constitution". He's talking about American citizens here, most of whom were just protesting.
Imagine calling BLM protestors "Domestic enemies of the Constitution"
What hyperbole!
We all saw what happened Jan 6. We all saw what happened the summer leading up to it, and we all see what is happening currently. And they are making themselves ridiculous trying to make Jan 6 The One Bad Thing.
Lightning 3, Rangers 1.
Anything else happen last night?
It's all mind reading. First though they had to purge the committee of any Republicans who might remotely be suspected of the harboring slightest impulse to present a counterargument. Instead you have the MIC owned war monger, Cheney, who is deeply vested in the keeping the MIC's activities and the concomitant corruption, which has of course entangled the weak-minded Biden, in Ukraine under wraps.
It's an offer of a narrative for their side to live in. It's more comfortable than the narrative that their side are trading on the susceptibilities of women, at least to their side.

OH! so, it's not that they 'CONSPIRING TO INCITE AN INSURRECTION' with selfies and buffalo hats..
It's that they were attempting to 'subvert American democracy' by ignoring democrat voter fraud?
got it!
In the absence of the excruciating 2000 Bush v. Gore "Hanging Chads" vote review, Trump had reasonable doubt. The suppression of the investigation into monkey business (e.g., now revealed $300M+ from Mark Zuckerberg) favoring Democrats led to reasonable doubt. The repeated failures of Pelosi and the Capitol Police to enact adequate security, in conjunction with embedded federal assets in the crowd and allegations of unlocking the doors from inside, raises reasonable doubt.
If the Democrats had not previously (1) made up the 2016 Russian stuff entirely and used it as the basis of the Muller Investigation, (2) impeached Trump over the Biden clan's suspect Ukraine stuff, and (3) coordinated to suppress the truth of the Hunter Biden laptop story, then "Jan 6 Prime Time" may matter. Given the lack of credibility of his accusers, drawing attention to Trump will mainly remind people of many coordinated and demonstrably false attacks on Trump from 2016 to 2020.
So no matter the outcome of "Jan 6 Prime Time," Democrats stand to be hoisted on their own petards. I'm personally shocked that they continue to return to Trump attacks like moths to the flame, and that they haven't changed the topic to make all of this seem out of date.
Politicians souls on public display.
Did they finally show the evidence that Trump illegitimately stole the 2016 election by colluding with Putin?
That seems to be the crucial question: Did Trump genuinely know he had lost the election?
Stacey Abrams
Hillary Clinton
Al Gore
It's not the crucial question, it's not even a meaningful question unless someone can explain why we care this time, but not any of the other times.
What did the President genuinely know, and when did he genuinely know it?
He knew there could be trouble and wanted a very large security force there that day.
Pelosi/McConnell, D.C. mayor, and Pentagon all denied his request. What he didn't know, and bet many didn't know, is the President of the United States in powerless to defend the U.S> Capitol.
Squirrel!
1. Donald Trump knew that he had lost the election.
2. Donald Trump knew that he had lost because the opposition had cheated.
3. Donald Trump knew that the opposition had illegally changed election law, printed bogus ballots, counted votes after midnight behind closed doors.
All of these things are true.
DJT knew that the DNC had spied on him (subsequently proven true).
DJT knew that the FBI had lied about him (ditto).
Etc.
It's all still true.
Liz Cheney reads a Trump tweet from 1/6, but neglects to finish reading the tweet which reads "Go home with love & in peace."
Fraud
If the election was stolen - as laid out in the movie “2000 Mules” - then wouldn’t that be a subversion of democracy?
It turns out that being corrupt and inept us not that great of a combination for the Dems.
I think that their assessment that American citizens are idiots is going to be their downfall.
So, if I get this right ... if you "march on Washington" to "protest" your government, then you are a "domestic enemy" and an "enemy of the Constitution." You are a "mob" attempting to "subvert Democracy."
Women's March ... are you listening? Put down your pink hats, ladies, or else.
Oh, and you black folks ... wake up! No more having dreams!
Even if everything Liz asserted was true it didn’t work and pales in comparison to the 2016 conspiracy among the candidate who ran against Trump, the FBI-DOJ complicity, Obama allowing it to proceed and the entire Mueller Continuation. That was a huge in-our-faces effort to “subvert democracy” and no one in Congress cares. So we’re all out of fucks to give when it comes to their crappy committee conspiracy.
About that “poorly produced” angle of reporting, what did these idiots expect when the producer they hired is best known for poor judgment and spiking a story that audiences are hugely interested in? Have they considered reversing both those decisions together and starting hearings on Epstein and Maxwells clients instead. At least I would DVR that for later!
I have no doubt that Trump has never believed that he lost the election.
These Democrats are full of shit and malevolent. A bad combination.
"You will see that Donald Trump and his advisers knew that he had in fact lost the election. But despite this..."
It's painfully obvious to most neutral observers that the sham Committee knows things that they are intentionally trying to hide from the public.
The Committee truly fears the results of the next two elections more than Trump ever truly believed in the results of the last.
"MY mail in vote never counted in New Jersey."
How do you know?
"Many others said the same thing happened to them."
How do they know?
And now, having written the above, I see that the Dems did indeed put an avuncular Southern Representative in charge of the show. Representative Bennie Thompson has the voice, the look, the gravitas, to make the show worth watching. And even that couldn't make it work. Oh, well, after a full term of the Resistance, FBI&CIA opposition programs, years of a false Russian collusion narrative, two unsuccessful impeachment trials and having to use untraceable universal ballots to crush Trump, this show wasn't a likely winner from the start.
Trump argued that postal voting on demand is wide open to fraud and organised ballot rigging. And he insisted that "millions" of "ghost" voters had been used to obtain ballots through the mail. These are stunning allegations.
"Did Trump genuinely know he had lost the election?"
This assumes a fact which hasn't been established: Did Trump lose the election? Polls have shown that more than half of Republicans think Biden won only through cheating and something like 1/3 of Democrats agree.
As such, how is it bizzare for Trump to think he won? If he honestly thinks he won, he is under no obligation to "play nice" and pretend he lost.
There certainly were shenanigans in the last election, were they decisive? Nobody really knows. The price of promoting and allowing cheating is that if you "win", some fraction of the people will view the victory as illegitimate. This is the price to be paid for victory at any cost.
That was as revealing and damaging to Trump as the Meuller report.
The walls are closing in... No really, the walls are closing in. Get out the tape measure and I'll prove it. Ms. Cheney, you can hold one end of the tapes to show there is no monkey business.
"I have no doubt that Trump has never believed that he lost the election."
We have no way of knowing what Trump believed at that time or later, but I have no doubt Trump always intended to claim "election fraud" if he lost the election, even if he knew the result was legitimate. This is why he said before the election the only way he could lose was through vote fraud; he was priming the pump, putting that bug in his worshippers'
minds, to ensure they would lap it up and vomit it back out...as they did and have.
This whole thing is supposed to be about JANUARY 6 and the incursion into the Capitol.
That is an entirely different matter from Trump telling people the election was stolen. The latter is, in fact, irrelevant. Also irrelevant is all the opinion and commentary about anything from Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, or Bill Barr.
I have no doubt that Trump has never believed that he lost the election.
Most Americans don't believe it either.
How many liberals believe Hillary, Gore, and Stacy Abrams didn't lose their election?
Hardin is correct. The dims are controlled by soap opera loving women and the republicans are controlled by soap opera loving low T men. It's all about the irrational feelings implanted in your lizard brain by bots and troll farms.
Fortunately most Americans don't give a fuck about the sideshows that make marionettes out of you people and your opposite numbers on the left.
“That seems to be the crucial question: Did Trump genuinely know he had lost the election?”
Yes, by then, with the Supreme Court, with significant pressure by CJ Roberts on new Justices Kavenaugh and Barrett, refusing to hear the Texas case, inventing a new legal doctrine to do so, esp in view of their Bush v Gore decision, it was all over. Roberts had, essentially, refused to do his job, and allowed very obvious cheating by the Democrats to stand. Of course, at that point, we all thought that the cheating was just the margin of victory in those six states. Come to find out that it was likely well over a million votes in those states, with over a half million votes in AZ alone, where Biden “won” by 10k votes, and Kelly by 20k.
I bet that Justices Kavenaugh and Barrett are regretting their decision now to duck on that case, with the attempt on his life a couple days ago, and constant demonstrations in front of their houses. If they had allowed Trump to win, the Republicans would now have 7 of 9 seats on the Supreme Court, and the Dems’ crazy wing wouldn’t be trying to flip one of their votes, or one of their seats (through assassination), on the question of abortion. Pelosi who refused Trump’s offer of National Guard troops on 1/6/21, likely helped orchestrate the protests at the Capital, was in charge of security that day, orchestrated the partisan witch-hunt 1/6 committee, is currently refusing to allow a vote on the Senate passed bill to provide additional security for Supreme Court Justices.
I understand where Trump was coming from. We all mostly had Civics in Middle or High School, where we learned about elections, balance of power, etc. Trump went into Election Night believing that he had won. Then, at 2-3 AM, Republicans were ushered out of the counting rooms in key Dem strongholds in key swing states across the country, bogus ballots were hauled in and counted, and recounted, and Biden, who hadn’t been capable of campaigning outside his basement, miraculously won these states based on these late, unsupervised counts, by minuscule margins. Then, almost unanimously, the Judiciary refused to look at the widespread evidence of fraud. This isn’t the America we learned about in Civics.
No one, can stop counting when way behind at 3:00 am in all battleground states, restart counting hour(s) later way ahead and convince me that is is raining while pissing down my back.
Our corrupt courts could have allowed evidence to be presented but did not. The side that shut down voting squelched all protests.
It was stolen bigger than heck.
"And he insisted that 'millions' of 'ghost' voters had been used to obtain ballots through the mail. These are stunning allegations."
Do they have any basis in fact? Trump can (and usually does) say whatever shit comes into his head, but only nitwits don't know to disregard most of what he says.
It has been true my entire life that Democrats do that of which they accuse others. Do they really expect the US public to forget that they, the Democrat Party, themselves "engaged in a massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information to convince huge portions of the U.S. population that fraud had stolen the election." And that their effort lasted four years, involved a Special Prosecutor, and even programs at the FBI, the CIA, the Clinton campaign, and herself, Hillary the loser? God help us, what fools they think us to be!
Why are peope so stupid? They somehow think cheney is making sense and has some sort of case. There is no "Crucial question".
There was no coup, conspiracy, or insurrection. Trump and a lot of other poeple thought the election was won by voter Fraud. He wanted congress to exercise their powers under the constituion. Nothing could have been done with Congress voting for it.
1. Trump I want the congress to exercise its rights under the constitution
2. Romney, cheney and the Democrats: That's destroying Democracy! We must impeach TRump!
People entered the capital building on Jan 6th. Several were murdered by the police. most stayed without the ropes. THere's ZERO evidence Trump told them to riot. Or even illegally enter the building.

Because New Jersey has a website where you sign in, and it tells you if you voted or not. I can look up every year that I have voted. It doesn't say who I voted for, just if it was accepted. I vote in EVERY election...local and national. First time my vote was NOT accepted.
Cook, like the crazy Democrats, could find a lot of agreement sticking to the facts but like the crazy committee members he just can’t help himself:
“This is why he said before the election the only way he could lose was through vote fraud; he was priming the pump, putting that bug in his worshippers'
minds…”
My inclination to agree with the first two clauses is extinguished by Cook’s catty and casual use of “worshippers” in place of the inoffensive and accurate term “voters.” He can’t help himself. The only incumbent president ever to lose reelection after increasing his vote total over the first campaign, Trump had a lot of voters. He knew like we all knew and know now that mail-in ballots are the least secure voting method and that it was pushed for precisely that reason. So Cook has to inject his sneering take to deflect from the facts. Fronting for the bloated corporate whore Hillary must be more damaging to true progressives like Cookie than we thought.
"Fortunately most Americans don't give a fuck about the sideshows that make marionettes out of you people and your opposite numbers on the left."
Right you are Howard. Get back to me when you have sorted out the "you people" thing. It is a bad look. It makes me suspect that you are angry at specific persons rather than at human folly in general.
If you are angry at specific persons, start in on the Department of Education next.
. First time my vote was NOT accepted.
Well, a truckload of ballots from New Jersey found their was to Philly. Maybe you voted in Pennsylvania this time.
Mexican politicians have learned from experience to expect that there will be some degree of fraud and manipulation -- and worse -- in elections. We have become Mexico. Yeah, I get that Trump doesn't like to ever admit that he lost anything, but you needed only to follow the news and listen closely during the election year to know that there were shenaningans going on. Whether Trump did win or whether he would have won a completely honest election we'll never really know, but he wasn't wrong to believe that there was cheating going on.
It was a garden-variety riot.
By purposefully not protecting the Capitol, Pelosi got exactly the result she was looking for.
Democrats: Trump is a moron, a dummy that can't even tie his own shoes.
Also democrats: Trump is a criminal mastermind that conspired to overthrow the most powerful nation in the history of the world with no weapons, led by a guy wearing a horned buffalo helmet leading selfie-taking grannies from Rapid City.
Choose one.
Blah blah blah blah TRUMP!!11!!! blah blah blah blah TRUMP!11!!!!11 blah blah blah blah. . . . .
I have no doubt Trump always intended to claim "election fraud" if he lost the election, even if he knew the result was legitimate.
You mean like Gore and Hillary ?
There is good evidence for massive vote fraud. Wendybar just explained to you how it was done. The US Supreme Court showed cowardice (or complicity) in refusing to hear challenges even when Pennsylvania defied Alito's demand they sequester late mail in votes. Everybody knows that it was stolen. Lefties like you know it but it was the result you wanted.
They’re trying to destroy Trump so he can’t run in 2024 but he is a hot mess. They should be more scared of clearing the way for DeSantis. The Boomers fixate on things and can’t move quickly nough to the next, even with their true belivernaids trying to pull their string.
Apparently, the J6 Committee discovered that Trump told people the election was stolen and...get this...it wasn't stolen (though Trump thinks it was)! Sherlock Holmes would be proud.
Breaking news: Trump made some people angry by telling them this, and a very tiny portion of those people did some naughty stuff!
If there was evidence Trump conspired with the Capitol rioters or that he provided material support to their efforts to do that, that's the stuff we need to see on day one of this farce. Frankly, if it existed, we'd have seen it by now.
The good, patriotic people of America storming the Capitol to preserve the sacred principle that Kamala Harris — oops, I mean Mike Pence, has the unilateral authority to decertify the election of their opponent.
"Did Trump genuinely know he had lost the election?" I see that there are a lot of people who believe that, but it's still kind of amazing. It is so obvious that he did not believe that. Still doesn't.
I have made this comment before and I make it again. The opposition to Trump has proven themselves so dishonest over and over again, that if - a very big if - they actually found something truly damning on Trump, I would not believe them. At this point, I would not believe them even if they brought proof, because the FBI has been so corrupted that I would honestly believe they would fabricate evidence, and I would very much believe that the Congress members that would claim it to be true would lie to my face. I have lost faith in our institutions. This is a scary moment, but an illuminating one.
The fact that Bennie Thompson would accuse anyone of anything is rich, given he disputed the 2016 election. I see a conspiracy here, and Thompson is a member of it.
A lot of personal Liz Cheney bashing here. A sure sign that our Trump bot acquaintances don't have the facts to dispute her. And, yeah, Trump uttered the phrase "peacefully and patriotically" in the middle of an hour+ speech. A little CYA while he's telling the mob they are losing their country, the election was stolen, Mike Pence is a traitor, can only win by being strong.

Don't know about millions, but the allegation otherwise is both not stunning and absolutely true. It is why no other Western nation uses postal voting on demand- way too easy to cheat.
I'm one of the many who believe the following non-contradictory statements.
1. Biden received more votes than Trump.
2. Trump received more non-fraudulent votes than Biden.
Everyone who understands numbers and numerical analysis knew this within hours of the vote totals being announced. Start with the obvious one- Trump is the first president running for reelection in history to receive more votes during his reelection campaign to lose. That defies even a common sense analysis. 4 years, 4 years people had to judge him. More people showed up to vote for him then the first time when he was an unknown quantity, yet even more showed up to vote against him? For candidate whose voters were so enthusiastic that he couldn't fill up a high school gymnasium?

From my perspective Trump was attempting to deal with an obviously stolen election. I stayed awake that whole night, and I know what I saw.
Cook: "MY mail in vote never counted in New Jersey." "How do you know?"
A pertinent question. And one Cookie itself should really answer. Because if you can't know if your vote has been counted or not then the whole 'election integrity' thing goes out of the window and becomes a joke.
Btw, I'm Flemish and I think the way the USA hold elections is simply insane.

Do you know whether or not your state has a means of recording by name those who voted by mail? I don't know how it works in your state, but in New York, the poll workers have voters sign in when they come to the table to receive their ballots. Is it possible the mail-in votes could have been counted but the names not recorded? I mean, it may be your vote wasn't counted, as you say, but it could also be a failure of recording the names on the mailed ballots.
(Also, my understanding is that more Democrats voted by mail than Republicans. If my understanding is correct, and if mail-in votes were under counted or not counted at all, this would seem to produce results more favorable to Trump. On the other hand, one study found the mail-in voting in 2020 had no measurable benefit for either party. So, who knows?)
There is plenty of evidence the election was tampered with. None of the questions were adjudicated as courts uniformly refused to allow the question. The most interesting, as I understand it, was in Pennsylvania where the Republican legislature was rebuffed on a suit of the Secretary of State changes to election laws, because no harm could be shown and then after the election a different court rebuffed them because they should have acted before the election. All of Biden's big overnight gains violated the statistical precepts of Benford's Law. When this was brought up the defense was the samples weren't big enough, even though all of the anomalies were with Biden votes. BTW, the IRS uses Benford's Law as a first pass evaluation of expense receipts for major corporations. Violate that law and the receipt by receipt microscope comes out.
There have been some post hoc evaluations that have found big issues with the process. The argument is the recounts come out the same. The question isn't the number of the ballots but their legitimacy.
if you can't know if your vote has been counted or not then the whole 'election integrity' thing goes out of the window and becomes a joke
Denying audit the vote was the confirmation that people... persons recognized to affirm diverse incidents of irregularities, fraud, and braying disinformation (e.g. NYT, WaPO et al) to steer the vote.
"From my perspective Trump was attempting to deal with an obviously stolen election. I stayed awake that whole night, and I know what I saw."
And yet, no quantitative evidence has been produced to prove what you deem to have been "obvious." Also, it shouldn't have to be said, but what one sees is not always what actually happened.
"Btw, I'm Flemish and I think the way the USA hold elections is simply insane."
I can't necessarily quarrel with that. The way the USA does so many things is insane.
Remember he planned this ahead of the election. It was always his plan to claim fraud if he was behind and he started election night. And he didn't wait to line up real lawyers like in 2000. He went with charlatans since he was determined to peddle the lie regardless of the facts. His MO in business for decades.
"'I have no doubt Trump always intended to claim "election fraud" if he lost the election, even if he knew the result was legitimate.'
"You mean like Gore and Hillary?"
Not comparable. Both won the popular vote (about 500,000 for Gore and a about two million for Clinton), and there were very clear and quantifiable irregularities in the Florida voting, yet neither contested the outcomes after the results were decided (in Gore's case, by the Supreme Court) or continue months and years later calling the outcomes into question. Trump still hasn't stopped whining about it. I don't think he is even so concerned about not being the President; I think he just can't abide being the loser--"a loser"--in his mind, the most vile epithet one can be called, (obvious given how profusely he uses it against others).
spurred a mob of domestic enemies of the Constitution to march down the Capitol and subvert American democracy."
Once again, if you keep smearing people for things they didn't do, eventually some of them are going to figure they've got nothing to lose.
They've become like Captain Ahab with his monomaniacal quest to kill the white whale. That Trumpy whale is lurking somewhere beneath the surface, waiting, driving them insane. They're obsessed with killing it.
Dreck. Miserable, slimy, Cheneyesque gaslighting. I find it fascinating that the daughter of one of the "Iraq has WMD" co-conspirators says Trump was author of this conspiracy.
They aren't interested in truth. Far more interested in alienating the Red half of America, while they sit on K Street, or party on Foxhall Road, telling the unwashed rubes who voted for Trump that they were complicit in this. Look, Trump was wrong and should have let it go. He didn't. So? Therefore, what? So far as the record shows, he did nothing illegal.
Americans, including Blue Staters, have moved on. More worried about filling up a tank than getting filled up with the Wet Dreams of the Inside the Beltway set.
“Trump still hasn't stopped whining about it.”
Why should he stop? There are logical anomalies in the results, as several here have outlined. The results should therefore be examined, unless you’re okay with voter fraud. If the democrats believe, as they claim, that this was the most secure election ever, they should welcome the scrutiny.
