"Twenty-one teenagers were found dead early Sunday morning in a tavern in the coastal city of East London, South Africa... in a tragedy that remains something of a mystery..."

"Initial reports were that the teenagers, who the police say ranged in age from 13 to 17, died from a stampede.... [A government spokesman] said the tavern had hosted a large party on Saturday night, featuring two DJs who were celebrating their birthdays. The party was also billed as a celebration of South Africa’s dropping its mask mandate for public places... Bouncers told investigators that in an effort to control the crowd, they closed the doors to the venue.... But the theory of a stampede seemed inconsistent with what forensic experts had found so far in terms of injuries to the victims.... Victims were found sprawled on the gray tile floor, but also on a sofa and a coffee table. 'In terms of physical evidence, nothing points to a stampede'...."

Something simple like skokiaan (boot-leg alcohol) or sophisticated like Fentanyl or Norfentanyl.

It's winter. Carbon monoxide?

Fentanyl? Some sort of drug overdose seems like a ready explanation.

Kermit Ruffins brought the song to my attention last year and I've listened to his version dozens of times along with half a dozen other covers. I always thought it meant welcome to Africa or something similar. I didn't read deep enough into the Wikipedia article where it does mention it means alcohol. It still sounds Norwegian to me.)

Were these teens white or black or is that question verboten?

When you think about an African stampede you don’t think about stampeding people.

Perhaps the crowd was getting agitated...security locked them down to calm them down...but they were dying from contaminated drugs/alcohol.

Recall the locked nightclub with stage fire in 2003 that burned 100 to death:

Bad batch of bootleg alcohol or drugs. Mass deaths from badly distilled alcohol have happened in the past in SA.

I initially assumed elephant stampede until I clicked on the Times article. I'm still not ruling it out.

Carbon monoxide.

It was a "pens down" party to celebrate the end of exams. Apparently, such parties are common in South Africa. The government has been trying to crack down on them.

Suspicion is focused on carbon monoxide.

Was it a meeting of the 'Young South Africans with Evidence to Convict Hillary Clinton Society'?

This sounds like something in the drinks to me, or as suggested above, CO.
