A woman ordered a drink from me in Dan Tana's once, since I was wearing a red linen shirt as the waiters there did. I was tickled, and bought her a drink. (I think she was Joey Heatherton).
If I'd walked up and offered to buy her a drink, she would probably have said no.
This was no a micro aggression.

"If European-Americans experienced microaggressions"

You mean like being told we're "fragile" because we're "white"?

You mean like constantly being told we can't understand "X" because we're "white"?

You mean like being passed over for a promotion so some pathetic loser who has the "right" skin color gets it instead?

Yeah, how about you GFY, chickie

David53 বলেছেন...

Number 6. Only because it reminded me of the 1978 SNL skit with Dan Aykroyd portraying Julia Child who bleeds out after cutting herself trying to debone a chicken. This triggered a Bass-O-Matic memory. Good times.

Mississippi John Hurt is my big winner from that lot...

They were all insipid.
Maybe not the Costco customer marveling at his daughter's stickers.

When people are snotty: that’s a microaggression.
When people are curious: that, too, is a microaggression ??

Why? B/c it’s none of our business?

1. Walk that Lonesome Valley. Gifted and w/integrity.
2. The Queen turns on the lights. Very mesmerizing for me.
3. Eh. Even the lemon guy didn’t get a chuckle from me, this time.

mezzrow বলেছেন...

The pear salad is an acquired taste.

I acquired it at my granny's house when I was about four. The recipe is echt in all dimensions.

farmgirl বলেছেন...

Lucien: if Joey ordered a drink from me, I wouldn’t have been offended, either.
I looked her up. Holy smokes.

Jupiter বলেছেন...

The micro-aggressions I encounter are usually more like being told that I am a perfect fit for the position, but the hiring manager has said she does not want to even look at any resumes from white males. I guess maybe I'd be more upset about the hair thing if I had any left.

8. If European-Americans experienced microaggressions.

huh? i'm not offended by people being Stupid.. *i* think it's funny
*plenty of people thoughy i was working (a lady at a dude ranch told me to get and saddle her horse)
*people (nearly ALL people) ask where i'm from (4th generation iowan; before that Wisconsin, before that NY, before that Ontario, before THAT NY (tory that ran after the war), before THAT some place in Holland, before THAT England (want to here some Other lines? One goes back to the King of Norway, and from there to Rome.
*no one (i mean NO ONE) pronounces my last name correctly..
*back in the day, chix used to touch my hair without asking ALL THE TIME (And they'd want to wear my jacket, AND they'd want a ride on my cycle (That's RIGHT; i'm BRAGGING)

Here's some advice.. Don't worry so much about people.. Worry about the GOD DAMN DEER!
They are TRYING to Kill you (or, at least steal your cycle mojo)

RoseAnne বলেছেন...

OK, the Italian husband was adorable. I watched it last because I thought it would be more cliche than it actually was.

Bill Peschel বলেছেন...

The Satisfaction one is funny because the Stones or their record company ordered YT to pull down the track (but not before I saved a copy).

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"The pear salad is an acquired taste."

I remember joking about this in the cafeteria at college: you could put anything on a leaf of lettuce and it became "salad." The same slice of canned pear that would be a dessert if put in a small dish by itself became a salad if you put it on a piece of lettuce on a plate.

But Grandma Sue went to more effort — not just the lettuce, but you fill up the concave part with Miracle Whip and you put grated cheese on top, plus a cherry. You might as well eat a real dessert — a piece of cake or pie.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

It's interesting that the demonstration of microaggressions is experienced as a microaggression — a sort of meta-microaggression!

Lurker21 বলেছেন...

Delaney Rowe seems very familiar, like we've seen her before. Or maybe it's just that the annoying characters she plays are so very familiar.

Johnny Depp does a pretty good Trump. But why does he dress like it's still the 1980s and have teeth like a meth head?

Barry Dauphin বলেছেন...

I think that only the over-educated experience micro-aggressions. Everyone else thinks that some people are just assholes.

hawkeyedjb বলেছেন...

Microaggressions are ordinary human conversation, but to the exquisitely ultra-sensitive can't-wait-to-be-offended crowd, they are the currency of life. Oh thank God, I've been micro-offended, now I can swoon and demand changes to the social order and power over other people's lives.

Like no white guy with an accent has ever been asked 'where are you from?'

Sebastian বলেছেন...

"If European-Americans experienced microaggressions."

Actually, the video says, "If European-Americans experienced racial microaggressions." Typical of white-supremacist Althouse to leave the racial bit out.

But my Euro-Am acquaintances, those with a slight accent, get them all the time. But since they don't have black privilege, they shrug it off.

The Queen's lights only because I'm a sucker for twinkle lights and domino effects; tied with Lonesome Road.

Josephbleau বলেছেন...

You have not been microaggressed until you have been to an after work dinner, as a traveling American technical consultant, in Montreal, where the (female) HR manager was invited. Good bouillabaisse is no compensation. In America all men must join the military. In America blacks are becoming extinct due to white people shooting them. America is plotting with Ontario to absorb Quebec into New York.

William বলেছেন...

When the Queen turned on the lights, they flickered just for a second before the line lit up. I found that absurdly moving. The lights will go out soon enough, but there she is. She's not as old as the Vatican, but, as an institution, she's weathered the times better. I remember her coronation. I was a kid and didn't much care, but my sister thought it was the biggest thing ever. She's been around for nearly all of my conscious life. It's reassuring that she has survived and with all of her dignity intact.

William বলেছেন...

I had a friend who lived in an expensive, high rise building. She was a Puerto Rican nurse. When she went to work in her uniform, fellow passengers in the elevator would sometimes inquire about her availability for cleaning duties. Microaggressions happen....On the other hand, on three occasions in my life I have been jumped by two or more minority members with robbery or mayhem on their minds. It's those macroagressions that you've got to watch out for.

Mary Beth বলেছেন...

Microaggressions. Some people have no filter and if you talk to enough strangers, some of them will say rude things and ask intrusive, personal questions. If someone of the same race and gender asks what we put on our hair, we take it as complementary interest and are not offended. If someone of another race asks the same thing, it's offensive even if they are asking because they are raising a step-daughter with similar hair.

I don't think we're going to get away from asking people where they/their family is from. I don't think it's done to otherize anyone, people are just interested in genealogy. The internet and DNA testing has made it easier to research, so I expect there are more people who want to talk about it. I think there's even a feeling of envy for those whose families came here recently because they don't have to dig through records to figure out where they are from.

Most of what is being treated as a microaggression is just ignorance. I understand getting tired of answering the same questions over and over, but honest curiosity isn't hate.

Wilbur বলেছেন...

If you grew up playing basketball at the city parks, because where the best players go, you quickly learn to expect and deal with macro-aggressions.

Huh? Because some American blacks are infinitely more racist than almost any white people I've met in my life. This is the dirty little secret that dare not be mentioned in American public life.

Ask any immigrant to this country, including those from Africa.

michaele বলেছেন...

Micro-aggressions, pear salad and the humble brag rant of not liking small talk.

Andrew বলেছেন...

@Wilbur,
Basketball courts in city parks belong to the black people of the city. That's in every piece of legislation creating a city park. However, please remember that the land actually belongs to the Native Americans from whom it was stolen. Black people are allowed to use the land because they beat the Native Americans at basketball many years ago at the first Suffering Olympics.

But what of the Queen and Paddington Bear banging their teacups to Queen and hiding marmalade sandwiches?

And the giant corgi made of drones hovering over Buckingham Palace?

And the absurd but touching Jubilee speech dedicated to the Queen by Boris Johnson, who looked as if he had almost combed his hair?

Why don't we have any of this sort of fun?

loudogblog বলেছেন...

I really liked They Ruined Satisfaction.

There are so many youtube pages where they ruin music.

There's How to Destroy Classical Musical Music by Count Vinheteiro. (He adds a rock drummer)
There youtube videos where they change the key of classic songs.
And of course there's the smooth jazz versions of Black Sabbath songs on youtube.
