"With nine ad-libbed words at the end of a 27-minute speech, Biden created an unwanted distraction to his otherwise forceful remarks by calling for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be pushed out of office."

"'For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,' Biden said. It was a remarkable statement that would reverse stated U.S. policy, directly countering claims from senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who have insisted regime change is not on the table. It went further than even U.S. presidents during the Cold War, and immediately reverberated around the world as world leaders, diplomats, and foreign policy experts sought to determine what Biden said, what it meant — and, if he didn’t mean it, why he said it."

Write Tyler Pager and Matt Viser in The Washington Post, in "How Biden sparked a global uproar with nine ad-libbed words about Putin/By declaring that the Russian leader ‘cannot remain in power,’ the U.S. president seemed to suggest a drastic change in U.S. policy — prompting a scramble by White House officials."

Watching the video, I can't understand the basis for labeling the statement "ad-libbed." Biden seems to be reading a speech, a bit robotically and on the edge of stumbling, and he slows down a bit and gets quite emphatic. He seems to build up toward that conclusion and fully intend it as a conclusion. I don't see how it's "an unwanted distraction to... otherwise forceful remarks." It's delivered in a manner that is more forceful than the surrounding remarks.

But how could it have been deliberately scripted? Some White House official — who? — reacted almost immediately and tried to make it go away with an incredibly lame argument that Biden just meant that "Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region."

So, the evidence that it was "ad-libbed" is merely that unnamed associates of the President are saying that after the fact. The WaPo writers assist the White House:

Biden’s line was not planned and came as a surprise to U.S. officials, according to a person familiar with the speech who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive situation.

I presume the WaPo writers are skeptical, but they see a dire need to help. We're living in the shadow of World War III.

In the immediate aftermath of the remark, reporters rushed to find Biden aides and seek clarity on the president seemingly supporting a regime change in Russia. But Biden aides demurred, refusing to comment as they scrambled to craft a response.

Reporters rushed and aides scrambled. This sounds like a description of the in-person scene. One of the article-writers, Pager, was there in Warsaw. I presume he witnessed chaos. This next part sounds like it's the scene back in Washington. The other article writer, Viser, reported from Washington.

White House officials were adamant the remark was not a sign of a policy change, but they did concede it was just the latest example of Biden’s penchant for stumbling off message. And like many of his unintended comments, they came at the end of his speech as he ad-libbed and veered from the carefully crafted text on the teleprompter.

Do you believe that? I don't. There is mind-blowing incompetence whether it's true or false. How can you have a United States President, giving the most high-profile speech on the most dire matter, and accept that he stumbles off message. It's his penchant. They had a "carefully crafted text," but he veered.

It likely signals to Putin what he already suspected about Biden’s true feelings, and it almost certainly will be used as part of Russia’s propaganda.

Our propaganda says whatever Putin says is propaganda.

“What it tells me, and worries me, is that the top team is not thinking about plausible war termination,” said Michael O’Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and author of the book “The Art of War in an Age of Peace: U.S. Grand Strategy and Resolute Restraint.” “If they were, Biden’s head wouldn’t be in a place where he’s saying, ‘Putin must go.’ The only way to get to war termination is to negotiate with this guy,” O’Hanlon said. “When you say this guy must go you’ve essentially declared you’re not going to do business with him...."

This is exactly what Trump would not have done. Mentions of Trump in the article: 0.

Over the past few weeks, Biden’s rhetoric on Putin — a man he once recounted telling to his face, “I don’t think you have a soul” — has become increasingly pointed. He has called him a “butcher” “pure thug” and a “murderous dictator.” So saying that he should be removed from power could viewed as the logical next step....

In other words: There can be no negotiation. Ad-libbed or not, he meant to say it. Whatever escaped from his mouth came from his brain.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state news agencies, “That’s not for Biden to decide. The president of Russia is elected by Russians.”

I await the new Russian propaganda that weaves in Biden's outrage at our January 6th attempted "coup."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state news agencies, “That’s not for Biden to decide. The president of Russia is elected by Russians.”

Remember Biden's reversal on sanctions. Rather than deterrence, after sanctions failed to deter the invasion, he talked about long sanctions being the tool to end the conflict.

In Biden's addled brain-tongue connection, Biden probably assumes everyone picked up on his idea that long sanctions will eventuate Putin's departure from power via domestic Russian forces, election or otherwise.

Just asking questions (Jaq) said...

I watch Bloomberg, from time to time, on account of sheer venality allows the truth out occasionally, where blindly accepting regime propaganda might cost their viewers actual money. Anyway, the view there seems to be that sanctions may be lifted, but until Putin is gone, companies won't deal with Russia; companies are calling for regime change.

It reminds me of that Popeye episode where the story of how the sea got salty was told, Olive Oyle had a salt grinder and once she started grinding it, it got out of control and wouldn't stop until the whole ocean was salty. Well, that seems to be what's happening with our propaganda machine, it's out of control. It makes you wonder if Biden is being trusted with the facts on the ground, or is being fed the same war propaganda we are.

Of course, the threat of a real (nuclear) escalation with Russia is made much worse by this rhetoric. Backing Putin into a corner where he has nothing to lose by firing his nukes is what Democrat and Republican Presidents managed to avoid during the 40 year Cold War. But Joe knows better.

Strike the ad lib line. It's still a speech that seems to make it completely clear that, even if Putin withdraws from Ukraine, Biden & NATO intend to wage a long war against "autocracy" in Russia. Why is that a good message to send right now?

Another obvious explanation: Biden's emulating JFK's first inaugural ("long twilight struggle," etc.) and Berlin speech. Except Biden's seems more sweepingly adversarial, less nuanced.

The more Biden talks about "democracy" the more questions I have about just what he means.

To date, the United States has sanctioned 140 Russian oligarchs and their family members, seizing their ill-begotten gains, their yachts, their luxury apartments, their mansions.

Is that actually legal?

I guess the fortunate oligarchs were the ones who passed their ill-begotten gains on to Hunter before they could be seized.

Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia, for free people refuse to live in a world of hopelessness and darkness. We will have a different future, a brighter future, rooted in democracy and principle, hope and light. Of decency and dignity and freedom and possibilities.

In 1984, Ronald Reagan, running for re-election, accidentally spoke into a hot mike and said, "I've just signed legislation banning Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

A few years later, the Russians acknowledged they could not sustain the Cold War and ended the Soviet Union. To do so, they had to trust that America and NATO would not attack.

I suspect the Russians easily recognize liars and propagandists considering they themselves lie so much. I'd bet Biden's words just roll off them like water off a duck's back. They are for western political consumption, nothing more. At least I hope so.

But actions are different. And the eastward expansion of NATO was a provocations the Russians take a bit less lightly.

To paraphrase Mickey Kaus, even without the "ad libbed" line, the whole speech is effectively the declaration of a new multi-generation Cold War against Russia. Hard to see this as anything more considered than a PR effort to boost Biden's polls. I suppose from that political point of view, the fact that Biden's rhetoric only make Putin dig in harder is a feature, not a bug: gotta make that War Bump last through the 2024 elections!

Of course, the real world implications (e.g., for NATO countries looking at years of economic regression) in a globalist world after 30 years of outsourced mining and manufacturing are beyond the competency of anyone in the Biden White House. Much less the subtleties of the MAD doctrine. Its easy to imagine Joe bloviating "I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed!"

“This demented old man, foisted on Americas by a cabal of rich globalists, is going to get us into a war.”

To be fair, he is also going to destroy our economy along the way. What the 29 year olds running the White House failed to consider is that the reason that we have been able to massively over spend over the last several decades is that other countries around the world have been buying our debt, because the US dollar is still the reserve currency around the world. That has meant that the Fed hasn’t had to buy it, as the purchaser of last resort. The problem is that when the Fed purchases it, it is funded by them essentially printing money (essentially, because it is mostly done electronically now), and then that new money exploding the money supply through the monetary multiplier (effectively 1/Reserve Requirements). With the tautology MV=PQ, exploding the money supply (M) will, by necessity drive up the price level (P), which ultimately controls interest rates. Interest rates are going to rise as a result, driving up the cost of debt service in our budget. And with the $3 Trillion or so excess spending since FJB was installed, there is a lot of debt to be bought by someone.

So, what does FJB and his handlers do? They set out to destroy the position of the US Dollar as the world reserve currency. Part of being the world reserve currency is being able to conduct business in $$$. So, now, Russia can’t buy or sell in $$$. They have oil and gas, some wheat, and raw materials, even military armaments that the world wants, even needs with the oil and gas (of course, the FJB Administration made that worse too, by destroying our energy independence). Are the Europeans, the Chinese, Indians, etc, going to freeze in the winter, suffer blackouts, or not drive their vehicles because they can’t buy from Russia using $$$? Of course not. They just use someone else’s currency. Other countries are watching this closely too. China, which very likely owns more of our sovereign debt than anyone else, and sees what happens when the US does something like this to Russia, is apparently moving towards buying and selling in its own currency now.

And, of course, the Dems’s answer to the inflation that they have caused already, is to send everyone checks to cover the inflation they caused with their proliferate spending, checks funded by deficit spending, which likely means maybe a 5x of that amount (assuming a 20% bank reserve requirement) increase in our money supply (thanks to the monetary multiplier), since the Fed will have to buy that debt now, goosing inflation that much more.

Ok, with maybe 1/4 million people between us. So far though, it appears much better run.

Joe Biden has restricted US Oil and Gas Production driving the price of oil up and helping Putin fund this war.

Joe Biden is letting the Iranians give Billions of dollars to Russian to help Iran build their nuclear program.

Joe Biden has done absolutely nothing to stop Putin from getting money and weapons. He has been pushing for war the entire time and has done everything in his power to make it happen.

The only people Joe Biden has hurt are Ukrainian and Russian and American People.

And there are stupid people like Howard that need this war too because they are too embarrassed by the people they voted for.

This war ends the day gas and oil prices go down.

Howard doesn't want that to happen.

Howard is just a warmongering hypocrite.

- Removing sanctions against Nord Stream 2

This list is endless, which explains why the wife of the former mayor of Moscow, a big time Putin crony, shipped $3.5 Million to the Biden crime family.

Btw, how did the GoFundMe for Soleimani turn out?

I don’t really know who the good guys are, and who the bad guys are. Remember, the current Ukrainian government essentially bribed the Biden (Kerry, Pelosi, etc) family. They got their regime change, and the duly elected more pro-Russian government was thrown out. Is the FJB Administration possibly overreacting here because of those bribes? After all, you can’t expect to get future bribes, if you don’t stay paid off.

On the flip side, the Russians seem to be obsessed about the Nazis in Ukraine. Why Nazis? Because they were, essentially founded as opposition to Russian Communism. And, of course, AntiFA was a paramilitary group in Germany opposing the Nazis, that was funded and run by those very same Russian/Soviet Communists. They lost, and the Nazis won. The appeal of the Nazis to Ukrainians has always been because they were anti-Russian. This was the case before they were taken over by the Nazis during WW II, and is just as true today (forgetting that the Germans considered them, as Slavs, to be of an inferior race). From the Russian point of view, the Nazis killed tens of millions Soviet citizens, directly or indirectly, during the war. So, this is essentially poking the Russian leadership in the eye.

Do you believe that? I don't.

The definition of an "ad-lib" is to go off script. So, yes, I do believe it was an "ad-lib."

Would Biden go off script? Wrong question. The question is why Biden is expected to stick to the script. And we know the answer to this: Biden is not the real President, he is suffering from dementia, and he is and always was utterly incompetent at foreign policy, so he cannot be trusted to make decisions. His only job is to do what he is told. This is wise since he is a mean, egotistical, blowhard dunce who likes to bully people, treat women (and girls!) inappropriately, and decorate his life story with fabrications when he is not literally plagiarizing other people's lives. He is of the lowest class of men on his best day and his best day was decades ago, assuming he ever had anything anyone would recognize as a best day. It is a horrible accident of the universe that he somehow is competent at gaining power despite having no other redeemable skills. If you described a man like him to me without telling me anything about his life, my best guess is he was a minor criminal of some sort, probably a small time con artist with a drug addiction, who would be lucky to live to see 40.

This blustering ad-lib, essentially challenging Putin to a fight, is exactly the sort of thing Biden does regularly, from blue collar voters to heads of state. I am not sure why you are surprised when he loses concentration - never his strong suit - and then defaults to his usual habits.

Assuming we survive this, your lesson is very simple: notice who are the persons propping this faux President up and never, ever trust them again in any capacity. These people should be shunned as they are evil. That goes for his handlers, his party apparatus, and the compliant media.

If your goal is to make sure that Russia continues to fight this war as long as possible this is what you would say.

If you want to make sure Russia has enough money to keep fighting you keep oil prices as high as possible.

If you want to keep Putin in power you give him propaganda to feed the Russian people by building animosity and allow him to keep the war going.

To sum the situation up:
1:Putin's minimum demands are "Russia gets part of Ukraine, and Ukraine can not join NATO".
If the result of Russia invading Ukraine is that the Budapest Accords are nuked, and Ukraine gets dismembered and blocked from getting allies to help it against the next Russian attack, then the long term result is the end of Ukraine.
If the result of Russia invading Ukraine is Putin doesn't get his minimum demands, then Putin is dead

So either Ukraine dies, or Putin dies. Pick one

2: If the US won't even provide defensive weapons to Ukraine to defend against an unprovoked Russian invasion (no, joining NATO is NOT a "provocation, it's the only sane thing for Ukraine to do), then no other country on Russia's border is going to trust any US guarantees of protection.

And neither will Russia / Putin

But that's how President Vegetable rolls; if he gets the least bit flustered it is time to punch someone in the face. That or sniff someone's hair.

It is amazing that Biden has managed to make Trump seem restrained. Biden is basically the worst traits of Richard Nixon, Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Carter, Warren Harding, LBJ, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, all in one, without any of the positives. If he keeps this up, James Buchanan is going to get added to the list.

I That said, when you have an enemy armed with a massive stockpile of nuclear weapons and a leader that has been acting erratic compared to his prior behavior, publicly declaring said leader has no future no matter what he does is not wise.

There are only two possible outcomes here: Putin wins, and Ukraine gets wiped out as a country, absorbed into Russia
Putin loses power, and almost assuredly dies

It doesn't matter what Biden says or doesn't say, that's the reality of the situation.

Because if Putin invades Ukraine and comes away with nothing, he's toast

But if he invades and comes away with part of Ukraine, plus Ukraine denied the ability to get allies to protect from the next Russian invasion, Ukraine is toast.

What is it with you people, caring more about the babble Biden utters, than reality?

Putin is on top of Russia because everyone below him is afraid to stand out as an enemy.

If Putin starts a nuclear war, all those people below him die, too.

Forcing them to understand that it's Putin dies, or they do, is probably the only way we can get this to the proper outcome of "Putin dies".

Because "Putin invades and conquers Ukraine, then continues going after the rest of the bits of the USSR and Warsaw Pact that escaped" is not an acceptable outcome.

In one great line from that disgusting toady Ilya Ehrenburg, if the entire world were covered in concrete, one day a crack would appear, and in that crack grass would grow.

Remember when Ford said he saw no evidence of Soviet domination of Poland? Damn stupid thing to say, on the one hand. The Poles had a government installed and maintained under the guns of the Soviet Army. If I had to guess what the hell Ford meant, I think it was that the Soviets had never succeeded in stamping out the Poles' desire for freedom. Not long after Ford embarrassed himself, a Polish electrician and a Polish priest and a lot of other brave folks who never got famous did a lot to crack the concrete in eastern Europe. Now the country whose capital gave the Warsaw Pact its name is a proud and motivated member of NATO.

No. Better alive, and undefeated no matter how bad things may look, and plotting a comeback.

Had Trump, either of the Bushes, or Reagan said those words, the Howard's of the world would be (rightfully) condemning them. Since it's Grampa Simpson, and he knows how much Gramps is disliked here, it becomes the greatest moment in American history.

Oooookay, points for honesty about the basic instinct backing this war, but I don't even think Zelensky shares it. No matter what he says, the fact is the man's increasingly aware that the West is not sending the aid Ukraine actually needs. And if that's the case- if the West is seriously plotting to fight Putin to the last Ukrainian in an insurgency- why not negotiate a surrender? I think Zelensky's corrupt and that his CIA backers are likely to kill him if he backs down, but those aren't reasons for Putin to want him dead. Quite the contrary.

Your leader is Joe Biden, which means your chances of success are slight. But let's say he does escalate this into NATO intervention. The first nuke isn't going to be in Ukraine. It's likely going to be a hypervelocity nuke into a USAF base or isolated American structure. Something with air defenses, to make clear this wasn't a fluke, but hopefully low casualties. Or maybe the target will be Washington. Maybe you're right and the whole nation will decide better to nuke Russia to ash (sacrificing all of Western Europe, Canada, New Zealand, and Israel). Or maybe the West will just ignore the GALLANT sacrifice of our best and brightest DC leaders, and forge a peace before the whole world ends. Maybe the military will shoot someone in the head before letting that person share your sentiment with a finger on the button.

Could go either way. I'm ready. Are you?

>>Stephen A. Douglas used to have a park named after him in Chicago. The world turned a few times, and the park was renamed for Frederick Douglass.

Well, his tomb is still there, on east 35th Street in a little park not too far from the lake (IIRC, he had a large farm/estate in that area at one point). I was vaguely aware of the tomb but stumbled on the actual site by accident a couple of years ago when I was driving to Greektown from Hyde Park to return a Zipcar in late December. I didn't stop, however, because the weather was crappy, it was getting dark, there was no obvious place to park, and I had already spent a long afternoon at the Oriental Institute and the Robie House (another location I was aware of but whose site I had also discovered by accident earlier in the day).

The stupid iPhone map app wanted me to just take a boring route on Lake Shore Drive, but if there's one thing I still know how to do, even after living in Boston for 50 years, is to get around on the South Side. Free, on-street parking near the Oriental Institute and Robie House was also a breeze.

--gpm

P.S. I just looked it up and the park renaming was less than two years ago. It was not in my bailiwick, but I was aware of the existence of Douglas Park (and probably drove past it a couple of times), but I had never given any thought to who it was named for. Probably still just mostly "Douglas Park" unless you are pursing the issue.

Really? How? And when?

Because if "it's not worth a nuclear war to stop this" now, Putin etc. et. al. is going to always believe "it's not worth a nuclear war to stop this", so they will keep on pushing until either there's a nuclear war, or there's nothing left to give up.

The whole "NATO in Ukraine is a threat to Russia" is bullshit, because we're not going to invade a country with as many nukes as they have.

But if we let them intimidate us more than that, if we let them take, and take, and take, because "it's not worth risking them starting a nuclear war in order to stop them", then the game is over, and we've lost

In one great line from that disgusting toady Ilya Ehrenburg, if the entire world were covered in concrete, one day a crack would appear, and in that crack grass would grow.
No, it wouldn't. Because all the grass would be dead.

Remember when Ford said he saw no evidence of Soviet domination of Poland? Damn stupid thing to say, on the one hand.
Yes, it was.

I would guess he's part of the "it only becomes real when a government official says it" group of idiots, and thought it would be bad for the US to officially say that the USSR was enslaving the countries of the Warsaw Pact.

My dad announced after that debate that he, an actual life-long Republican, wasn't going to vote for that idiot Ford because of that claim.

So far as I know, he carried that out.

Now the country whose capital gave the Warsaw Pact its name is a proud and motivated member of NATO.

And the same people who want to sell Ukraine down the river would do the same to Poland if they get their way WRT Ukraine.

Greg...: There are only two possible outcomes here: Putin wins, and Ukraine gets wiped out as a country, absorbed into Russia Putin loses power, and almost assuredly dies

Not a student of history, I see.

There are plenty of examples of leaders who led their people to disaster, some much worse than losing a war, that remained in power for the rest of their lives, died peacefully in their sleep, and passed on their position to their chosen successor. Plenty more died more violently, but it took quite some time between the disaster and the end, sometimes decades, and often unrelated to the disaster that should have ended them. The Russians are well aware of this; Stalin died of natural causes despite bungling one thing after another, being a mass murderer, and generally being hated by everyone.

Putin, being the spy bastard he is, knows his chances well enough. If he thinks he can get out of this war and still cling onto power, even with the loss of prestige, he may take it. He has the tools to survive. You have to give him that escape hatch if you want this war to end in a settlement rather than a fight to the death, and even if you want a fight to the death you keep your options open in case the facts on the ground change. That's why the President of the United States is not supposed to randomly blurt out in public that his goal in life now is to get rid of Putin because this has become a d*** measuring contest for a confused old coot.

As I have said before, Biden is and always was incompetent at foreign policy with the only exception being his great talent at taking bribes from foreign interests. This man should never have been elected to office on any level, but now he is the leader of the free world and busily doing his best to make matters worse because he is too damn senile and too damn stupid to understand the danger. God help us.

This is really, really stupid. Most warmongers not profiting from the wars directly are not very bright though.

If Ukraine accepts neutrality and relinquishes claims to Crimea the war ends tomorrow.

If the United States resumes Trump policies of energy independence the price of oil goes back to 60$ a barrel and Putin cannot afford war.

Right now the war continues because Biden is giving Putin 130$ a barrel oil and threatening Putin with the Ghaddafi treatment.

Right now the war continues because the Biden Regime and the Putin Regime need the war to hold power over their respective populaces.

Gpm—the Stephen Douglas tomb is a state park at about 35th street, as you say. Douglas (now Douglass) Park on the west side is part of the Chicago Park District system of boulevards and large public parks, including Jackson Park, Washington Park, Garfield Park, McKinley Park, Humbolt Park, Logan Square, Lincoln Park, and Grant Park, together with tree-lined boulevards connecting them. Douglass Park was renamed a few years ago in the backwash of the St. George Floyd riots. Also, Congress Boulevard was renamed for Ida B Wells and Lake Shore Drive (the Outer Drive) was renamed Jean Baptiste Point du Sable Lake Shore Drive, althought the Inner Drive retains the Lake Shore Drive name.

This is stupid. Warmongers think war is the only thing.

Ukraine accepts neutrality and commits to peace in Crimea. The war ends.

After the war ends the Regimes in Russia and the US are mortally wounded.

Both Biden and Putin will be removed after their disgraceful and stupid actions. These regimes have been pushing for this war that nobody in the world wants.

And after the war ends we will get to see if Zelensky gives up the powers he has seized and if he punishes the war criminals in the Ukraine Army who are currently shooting captured Russian Soldiers in the knees and leaving them to bleed out.

But since Facebook approves of war crimes now it will be interesting to see if they condemn these actions by Ukrainian Soldiers.

Doesn't matter. Putin cannot afford for the war to continue.

I would guess the question goes to a vote in those regions and the residents of those regions vote 70-80% to join Russia.

2: Putin invades Ukraine. Putin gets to rip part of Ukraine away because of the invasion, and make it part of Russia, while also forcing Ukraine to give up any ability to have allies the next time Russia invades (that is what "neutrality" means here)

It is pretty funny to watch you completely lose any objectivity or ability to think critically. You are whinging and blathering like a true drone.

This whole situation is not as black and white as you would like it to be. But idiots love morality plays and are the first to fall for propaganda.

And when they do they spew stupidity like this.

Joe Biden made this war happen through a series of blunders and actions. This was done on purpose. And this war is going to have effects all over the world.

What do the people of Ukraine gain by joining Nato? The only people in the Ukraine that really benefit from that are the corrptocrats in Ukraine feeding of of the Washington DC money laundering operation in Ukraine.

Right now the Russian people are getting screwed by sanctions and Putin is still getting his oil money. And Joe Biden has threatened Putin with the Khaddafi treatment.

Do you think Joe Biden doesn't want this war to continue?

Answer that question honestly.

You are a blathering tool frothing at the mouth and gibbering. You have no idea how to look at this situation from multiple perspectives so all you do is raise the bloody shirt and scream for other people to fight the war harder.

You need to take a step back and think about what is going on.

Or you need to shut the F up and get your ass to Ukraine and fight yourself since you think this is the holiest of holy wars.

Achilles said...

Russia couldn't attack their neighbors while Trump was president.

But the DC war machine needs war.

This was always the risk in electing a man near 80, that he says the quiet parts out loud. I don't doubt his administration wants war with Russia - war often being a way to boost sagging poll numbers and provide distractions from domestic troubles - but they want Russia to provide a cassus belli. It's similar to the two world wars, where the US was provoking while neutral to get the Germans and Japanese to provide a cause that would win public support for war.

This isn't a statement that can be walked back. Putin won't deal with people who want to remove him, and since everybody in this administration fails at understanding human nature, they probably don't realize they've united Russians behind Putin in a way Putin never could have on his own. They also apparently didn't learn from the Ukraine attack that Putin has no issue striking first, and this statement may well provoke Putin to take the initiative again.
