"Tumblr was founded by David Karp and launched in New York City, in February of 2007... It was built to be a simple, social blogging platform..."

"Users could design their own home pages; post text, images, gifs, or videos; and follow a feed of others doing the same.... In 2013, when Tumblr had seventy-three million accounts, Yahoo acquired it for more than a billion dollars. But, in 2016, the company did a writedown of seven hundred and twelve million dollars... [In 2019] Automattic, the commercial arm of the content-management system WordPress, acquired the site for a reported three million dollars. It was easy to assume that Tumblr was dead.... It’s one of the few social networks where users can still publish entries that resemble blog posts. The Tumblr users I spoke to, both new and returning, cited a few unfashionable aspects that keep them using the platform. Tumblr’s main feed doesn’t shuffle posts algorithmically based on what it determines might appeal to a user. It’s 'a good, old chronological river'... 'It’s the periphery of the internet; nothing important is happening there.'... What makes Tumblr obsolete, for the moment, are the same things that lend it an enduring appeal. The fact that it maintains a following should remind us that we use social-media services by choice; no platform or feature is an inevitability. As Karina Tipismana, the student, told me, 'People say stuff like, "I wish we could still use Tumblr." It’s there, it’s there!'"

From "How Tumblr Became Popular for Being Obsolete/The social-media platform’s status as a relic of the Internet has attracted prodigal users as well as new ones" by Kyle Chayka (The New Yorker).

Tumblr predates the places that are not obsolete — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok. The point here is that the obsoleteness is what's so good. If there's nostalgia for blogs, if there's something inherently appealing in blogs that is lost in these other places, let's remember not only Tumblr, but also Blogger, which has been around since 1999.

I thought I was getting into blogging late when I began this blog 18 years ago. Blogger had already existed for 5 years. I didn't want to miss out on blogging entirely, though part of me thought, it's too late. And I remember when Tumblr was the new thing, 3 years later. I remember all the others — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok — when they were new. But I'm still here with the old, still blogging old school. I don't need to look back to the time when blogging was blogging, like it's something quaint, from simpler times

I've stuck to the discipline, daily blogging, absolutely no skipped days in 18 years. I've got to make the announcement every year, and it's that day again, my bloggiversary. I'm not stopping now. And thanks to everyone of you. If you've got this far, you haven't stopped reading.

Happy blogiversary!

I am acquainted with the VP of Engineering at Tumblr. Great fellow. I won't be surprised if they figure out ways to make Tumblr more relevant again -- under Automattic's stewardship, I'd be shocked if they turned it into an algorithm-driven site.

Yes, give me the Althouse blog for the today.

Amazing. An amazing record.

You know, I was moaning the other day about "critical thinking," and how every educational institution pays lip service to it and then never follows through. But you, Althouse, are the one reliable source of critical thinking! Thank you for that. (And I hope you are teaching others - young ones - to follow your example. The world - our country at the very least - needs many more like you in every genre.

And kudos to Meade as Best Supporting Actor!

Congratulations Ann. I read you every day, and I really appreciate the way you have kept it up--quality as well as quantity.

Tumblr shot itself in the foot with the porn ban. imagine if Exxon stopped selling gasoline and their business model depended upon people buying hot dogs and packs of gum.

That's what happened to Tumblr.

I'm happy and grateful that you're still here.

An apology. Earlier today in your first post I mentioned your 14 years blogging. I knew better than that. I tend to make mistakes when doing drive-by commenting as my dog is leading me out the door.

Congratulations. You are the best. There are other great bloggers. But no one that I can think of has done this every day for 18 years, non-stop, with such a wide variety of topics, posts, and information. It's fun, informative, entertaining, and stimulating. Your commenters are loyal, and in some cases, brilliant, and most of the time, a great part of the overall show.

If there was a blogger award show, you would have, by now, received multiple Bloggies for your work over a number of years. And at some point, they'd have to bring you back to offer a Lifetime Bloggy Award.

I think the vast variety and number of loyal commenters will have do do as your reward. We all appreciate you for what you've done here for so many years. May you keep it going as long as it continues to be stimulating and fun for you.

Excelsior!

A genuine vocation leads the writer to write only for himself: first out of pride, then out of humility. - Don Colacho

I hope the quote transcends matters of mere gender. So far the hobgoblins are detected primarily in the comments and examples brought for examination. Next year I'll find a tired old Steely Dan lyric. Not bad so far.

The point here is that the obsoleteness is what's so good.

I would say that the point here is that when websites go "new and improved," they invariably f*** everything up.

I’m surprised Blogger has lasted this long. Still taking up space somewhere. As long as the cash cow gives milk…

Well done with the perfect attendance. There were a few days there where it was touch and go, ya?

I’ve read every post, every day, for most of those years, at least the last sixteen.

This is, without question, my favorite blog.

We’ve had our ups and downs, our blogger and commenters, but here we all still are.

Hope you have this passion for many more years to come.

Your posts are always interesting, whether I agree with the politics or not.

Part of it is, this is where I get news and items from sources I don't patronize.

Keep it up...you're doing great : )

Ah, I see, there IS, not surprisingly, a meaning of prodigal that means "leaves and returns", based on, of course, the prodigal son.
But I thought the article was talking about new viewers.

The interesting part is Yahoo paying $1 billion and selling it for $3 million. Remember, they paid Mark Cuban $5.7 billion for Broadcast.com. It always amazes me when companies acquire other companies at peak valuations with no relevance to any earnings multiple and the investment death spirals to zero.

I read and enjoy your posts every day. Your cataract operation was the trigger that caused me to go for the procedure. You have thus impacted my life for the better in a material and physical way. I got to see little spring flowers in the park because of you. Thanks very much.

Never missed a day?! Wow, Cal Ripkin. Maybe take pointers from the daily TV hosts who record a few episodes at a time and broadcast accordingly? I imagine some newspaper crossword puzzles and horoscopes work the same way!

I've been with you many of those years, Professor. Disagree with you on some pretty serious stuff and get exasperated at your insistence of being right no matter how wrong. But you always allow criticism, differences of opinion and insults. Thick skin you have, in the best possible way.

I think it was Yahoo that banned/hid the porn on Tumblr. I once read serious blogs of sex-workers and polyamorous people there. It was a view into a different world--not necessarily titillating. I have not been back they went away.

A belated happy birthday along with respect for your work ethic and talent and gratitude for what you do: the best site I’ve found.

tim maguire বলেছেন...

Congratulations! I'm not sure when I started reading you, but I’m pretty sure it was by the time I graduated law school—May 2004. I read a lot of blogs at that time—almost too many to track. Now I read 2. Althouse and Instapundit. Most of my new blogs came through Instapundit links, so probably the first time Reynolds linked you, that would be my discovery date.

Blogging everyday for so long is an amazing feat. I don’t know of anyone else who’s done it. I started a blog in 2002 (and also thought of it as a mature medium), but it turned out I didn’t have things to say every day and I never got past the zero readers barrier before trailing off. Doing it for 18 years is almost unfathomable.

Tank বলেছেন...

I think I once commented about it being hard work, and you said - no, it isn’t (for you).

I came late to the party, having stumbled across a reference to this blog I forget where, either Pajamas Media (as it was called then), or Blaska's articles when he was tolerated at Isthmus. Been here pretty much every day since then for the same reasons others have mentioned, especially the links in the posts and in the comments to other stories I might never have seen otherwise. In that respect this blog has served as much as a news aggregator as it has a commentary. Thanks.
