Yes! I was able to get out and do my sunrise run this morning. Photos taken at 7:23 and 7:25. Unfortunately, there was 100% cloud cover, but the temperature was a nicely warmed up to 20°. The next 2 days are going to be too cold again — 2 below tomorrow at sunrise and 1 below on Saturday — but then it looks like there will be a stretch of sunrise-runnable days — at least until next Thursday or Friday. By then, we'll be launched into February, and February won't be as cold as January... probably. Plus, it's short. I can already feel the spring approaching. Certainly, the darkest 20% of the year is over. We're entering the most balanced days, in terms of light and darkness, and I like that.

A mouse was spotted. There's never one mouse. So far I've trapped 11 of them, about one per night, and set them free by the back fence, with a slight environment problem, namely that it's near zero degrees. Perhaps they can burrow under the snow and stay warm like in an igloo. Traditionally mice in the wild nest in telephone junction boxes and nibble on the wire insulation.
I overcooked my chicken.
I'm also not satisfied with my middling average.

Good riddance to Breyer.
By the way, my best guess is that most of the police officers who attacked people for "violating" mask mandates are gonna spend the rest of their lives as defendants in the never ending war crimes tribunals that are gonna follow the Wuhan/Fauci attack on all the innocent people of the world. A few of them will quickly confess they were in the wrong, and will be forgiven for their violent and criminal behavior, but most of them are going to be publicly despised by good people for the rest of their lives.
My new years resolution is the be able to run a couple miles from time to time. I'm 59 and my achilles tendon seems like the biggest concern. I'm pretty tall and around 210 lbs and think I need to drop 20 lbs just to lower the stress. I wonder if there is a tendon diet.

It sounds like you’re trying very hard to convince yourself that winter In Wisconsin isn’t so bad and will soon be over. Break out the summer clothes right after Valentine’s Day! It’s great to be an optimist with the glass half full attitude. If not, it would be hard to the handle single digit temperatures which will probably last until mid-March with more snow to deal with. I was never able to convince myself that winter wasn’t so bad when living in CT. However, it will be in the high 30’s on Sun. here in SW Florida. Brrr! So, I plan to get cozy with a book and catch up on Netflix.
You’re awful damn optimistic.
We watched Groundhog Day again. What a fun movie! Bill Murray is stuck in the middle of winter (and in the middle of himself) and is unable to escape. For what it's worth, my wife knows Nancy Murray, Bill's sister, who is a Dominican sister. So two degrees of separation and all that.
I am happy to say it’s 17F outside right now!! That’s excellent news.
I’m not so sure what tomorrow morning will bring- I think I’m still unthawing from the extreme cold of today! Wood heat helps- wind chill does not, but I’m snug til the morrow!
I’m going to try to grasp some of the Althouse hopefulness for a warmer February! I’m supposed to be the optimistic one in my family; lately- just a tad cynical! Good luck on the Wordles, people-eeples!
You're hopeful and I like that - I like hopeful people. I suppose I am one - otherwise why 'persist'. We looked at tyranny and we didn't like it!
Hey! Breyer will resign when his successor is approved. That has to be okay.

Lamartine: Le soir
Language: French

Le soir ramène le silence.
Assis sur ces rochers déserts,
Je suis dans le vague des airs
Le char de la nuit qui s'avance.
Vénus se lève à l'horizon;
À mes pieds l'étoile amoureuse
De sa lueur mystérieuse
Blanchit les tapis de gazon.
Tout à coup détaché de cieux,
Un rayon de l'astre nocturne,
Glissant sur mon front taciturne,
Vient mollement toucher mes yeux.
Doux reflet d'une globe de flamme,
Charmant rayon que me veux-tu?
Viens-tu dans mon sein abattu
Porter la lumière à mon âme?
Descends-tu pour me révéler
Des mondes le divin mystère?
Ces secrets cachés dans la sphère
Où le jour va te rappeler?
Viens-tu dévoiler l'avenir
Au coeur fatigué qui t'implore?
Rayon divin, es-tu l'aurore
Du jour qui ne doit pas finir?
Authorship
by Alphonse Marie Louis de Lamartine (1790-1869)
The evening brings back silence.
Seated on these deserted rocks,
I am in the waves of breeze from
The chariot of the advancing night.
Venus rises on the horizon;
At my feet, the amorous star
In its mysterious glitter
The carpet of grass pales.
Suddenly, a ray of light detaches
From the nocturnal star,
It slides over my silent forehead,
And comes to softly touch my eyes.
Soft reflection of that fiery sphere,
Charming ray, what do you want of me?
Have you come to my battered breast
To bring light to my soul?
Have you descended to reveal to me
Worlds of divine mystery?
These secrets hidden in the sphere
Where the day goes to recall you?
Have you come to unveil the future
To the tired heart which implores you?
Divine ray, are you the dawn
Of the day which never has to end?

Some wild speculation about Breyer's "resignation."
The Senate appoints another justice. Breyer decides not to resign. There are then 10 justices on the Court, including both Breyer and the new justice. The Court stalemates 5-5 on some key case(s) that Breyer was keen on not having overruled.

Because we are all slaves or the progeny of slaves. Do you know what 'serf' means? Etymologically it means 'slave', but, first, 'slav', which in 'slavic' is 'slovo', which means 'word' or 'utterance'. So, for the 'Turks', those 'speakers' where 'slaves', ie the educated? To speak was wrong? I'm going down the wrong tunnel! We were all peasants - agreed. Therefore, we were in that indigenous place they were in? No? No.
Unless it's under say -5F, it's runnable. I've been way too wimpy this winter in MN. Have run every day, but too many times indoors on the treadmill. I always regret it and have yet to regret running outside no matter how cold. But that's AFTER the run. BEFORE the run, it always looks to cold to go out, say below 10F, and so I too often wimp out.
So I'm resolving to just do it. Get outside. It's good for one's mental health.

I appreciate Ann’ s optimism. February tends to milder than January, but here March is often the blizzard month. However, March can be mild or “open” as they say here. I’ve come to accept deep winter as an ideal time for just thinking — introspection, meditation, reading and writing.
It will get down to -16 tonight, and then it will moderate some. Good night for reading and netflix. Its so cold that our local resident deer are
hiding in the deep woods where they huddle together for warmth. Occasionally they venture out to empty everyone’s bird feeders. Its a loosing battle to fill our bird feeders because the deer empty them overnight. Its getting expensive.

But the statute only authorizes 9.

The earth is about five weeks behind the sun (thermal inertia and lag), hence the old weather saying, “As the days get longer the cold gets stronger.” But that only works from Dec. 21 to Jan. 27, winter’s thermal nadir.
Each year when Feb. arrives I know I’ve kicked another winter in the ass … though it must be admitted, I’ve lived through some brutal Februarys.

I mentioned this on another thread, and someone cited examples of when it's been done in the past. I haven't checked to see how accurate they were. I'm betting that in the past the Justices cited submitted their papers with a date certain, and without conditions, which allowed the process to take place with the surety of a vacancy.
"Blogger Bender said..."The best episode in all of Star Trek was just on. In the Pale Moonlight, where Sisko conspires to get the Romulans to enter the war."
Yep, it's a good one.
Where would Sisko be without Garak?
Exactly - I haven't heard Justice Breyer say 'I'm retiring' - are the democrats just attempting a force accompli? And the President, irresponsibly, piling on? He (the Justice) is not known to give in to pressure - what if it backfires and he refuses to give his seat up to that supposed Black, Female (why not trans?!) would be? Won't 'she' be crushed!

I hate meeses to pieces, so I don't have any. My community cats rid my yard and some neighbor's yards of all kinds of rodents including mice, chipmunks and ground squirrels. It’s 21. Idk how much it snowed, but what a (positive)span in temperature.
Charlotte rarely gets snow. North Carolina is interesting because we have really cold places in the mountains (Boone), and really hot places at the beach (Wilmington).
Boone averages 33 inches of snow a year. (Madison averages 42).
Charlotte averages 2. This year we're above average as we've already had two snowfalls, and more is coming. The first snowfall was icy and crusty and annoying. The second snowfall was soft and beautiful. Really happy about the second one.
Having to pee in your car isn't really a thing here. What we have to worry about is "panic in the grocery store" and "all the food is gone." And you get that with one inch of snow. We all run to the grocery store, and you have to run to the grocery store, because everybody else is running to the grocery store. And if you're not running to the grocery store, well, I hope you have some food in the house.
When the second snow was falling, I was like, "crap, forgot to buy food." Driving around in the snow the next day, I had a hell of a time finding some fast food to eat. "We have to close! There's white stuff on the ground!"
Safety tip if you are in the South during a snowfall -- the drugstores have food now. There's never a line at the drugstore. Grocery stores, the lines can get like Disney World.
The White House claims Russia will attack Ukraine in February when the ground freezes harder. The coldest month in the Ukraine is January.
I've noticed on Facebook (yeah, I'm still on it despite all the nonsense), that the meme factories have practically gone to radio silence about vaccines. I have a 50-50 spread between 'woke' relatives/friends and those who fall in the spectrum outside that category. Makes me wonder if there were orders from headquarters to dial back the outrage.
Also, we can't drive in the snow. I mean, it's allowed, but we suck at it. Some of these stereotypes are totally valid.
You should see me try to ice skate. I went on an ice skating date one time and she was really sorry that she suggested that. I fell on my ass about twenty times. And since she wanted to hold hands, she fell on her ass six or seven times.
Eskimos, by the way, really do have a lot of words for snow.
David Begley said...Hey! Breyer will resign when his successor is approved. That has to be okay.
He can resign any time he wants, but it's hard to see how a new justice can be approved without a vacancy. What they’ll really be doing is setting up the confirmation of a 10th justice. Even if Breyer rescues the situation by retiring before the new justice is confirmed, the ice will have been broken. The tradition of 9 justices will have ended.
What does Senator Sinema think of the Biden Administrations SCOTUS pick?
I mean right at this moment…
They may not have the votes…
I too use the lengthening days to help sustain me through the worst of winter. Now’s about the time I get sick of the cold, but it’s light past 5:30 (in late Dec, it’s dark before 5). Spring may be a while away, but it’s coming.
"Most of the mechanised forces need the ground to freeze if they are to make quick progress. Some of the countryside heading into the Donbass from the east is boggy but nowhere is quite so waterlogged as coming down from the north and through the Pripet Marshes—a vast expanse of low-lying bogs and marshland. January is the coldest month but so far, the winter has been relatively mild, and the ground is not deep frozen. This may change by the end of the month giving Moscow about six weeks before a slow thaw sets in softening the ground into terrain which, if being used by the military, would turn into a mud bath..."

Twelve mice. So long as mice don't return every time, the number of mice falls exponentially.
Anyway there's 300 feet between fence and house and a tiny forest blocking the way, and other structures around to live in.
Taking a mouse somewhere else requires some unnecessary unpleasantness when it's zero degrees out and there's no walking room on the snow and ice covered street edges.

In northern New England, the first week of February is, on average, the coldest week of the winter... on average, hence the saying about lengthening days. I think that winter has a kind of heft and slower momentum, the farther north you go, and here in Florida, it is pretty closely tied to the short days, and Christmas. By mid Feb, the green needles will be coming back on the cypress trees and the birds will be in breeding mode.
It is highly likely that La Niña will last until April.

The Pulley
By George Herbert
When God at first made man,
Having a glass of blessings standing by,
“Let us,” said he, “pour on him all we can.
Let the world’s riches, which dispersèd lie,
Contract into a span.”
So strength first made a way;
Then beauty flowed, then wisdom, honour, pleasure.
When almost all was out, God made a stay,
Perceiving that, alone of all his treasure,
Rest in the bottom lay.
“For if I should,” said he,
“Bestow this jewel also on my creature,
He would adore my gifts instead of me,
And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature;
So both should losers be.
“Yet let him keep the rest,
But keep them with repining restlessness;
Let him be rich and weary, that at least,
If goodness lead him not, yet weariness
May toss him to my breast.”
Don't tell me 'rap' meant nothing - I remember arguing for it with my most respected friend - this was the way to understand poetry - it degenerated pretty quickly, proved him right, but I'm right.

I just discovered that some weather people divide the year into 4 solar quarters. Solar Winter is the 91 days with the least time between sunrise and sunset, then Solar Spring, etc. This year, Solar Spring begins on February 5. This quarter division is not an official National Weather Service thing but I can't find out from a little googling who came up with the names or who uses them.
