"North Koreans have been banned from laughing for 11 days as the totalitarian country commemorates the 10-year anniversary of the death of Kim Jong Un’s father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il..."

"Meanwhile, the slimmed-down despot dusted off his trendy black leather trench coat Friday to wear again as he stood beneath a large red banner emblazoned with an image of his dad, who died in 2011.... On Friday, multiple newspapers — all tightly controlled by the government — published articles praising Kim Jong Il. 'He is, indeed, the greatest man and the great sage of the revolution all the people on this land follow with their deep affection and sincerity,' the ruling party’s Rodong Sinmun paper said....  Meanwhile, Kim has reportedly banned citizens from copying his fashion choices by wearing leather coats. RFA has reported that actual fashion police have patrolled the streets to confiscate the jackets from sellers and any citizens wearing any knock-offs."

No laughing. And no leather coat-wearing.

Almost as over-the-top as MSM coverage of Obama & Biden!

Maybe, just a Little laughing?

Well, there really is nothing funny about Kim Jong Il or North Korea.

Multiple US politicians reading close and taking notes.

They can't copy him exactly anyway, as Kim's coat is made from the skins of Namibian eunuchs.

And those aren't exactly easy to come by...

Here's looking forward to the 10 year anniversary of the death of the rest of the family.

Perhaps we will be banned from laughing at Brandon because it threatens our democracy.

What’s the difference between banning laughing and leather coats and forcing kids to wear masks in schools?

By remarkable coincidence, I clicked over here right after rewatching this scene from Monty Python's The Life of Brian:

What’s so funny about Biggus Dickus?

It's rumored the extras were told that under no circumstance must they laugh, so their small noises and contorted faces, which absolutely make the scene, are them genuinely trying hard not to crack up as Michael Palin invades their space and acts outraged that they find his friends' names funny.

Can real leather survive un-shrunk that long, 10 years?

Can a knockoff?

I just cannot imagine how they're going to keep those famously funny North Koreans from laughing about life in general for 11 days. Maybe they can open up their world to the New York Times. They won't laugh for a year.

From this day on, the official language of San Marcos will be Swedish. Silence! In addition to that, all citizens will be required to change their underwear every half-hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check. Furthermore, all children under 16 years old are now... 16 years old!

I expect a ban on "Let's go Brandon" chants any time now.

No laughing. And no leather coat-wearing.

And apparently not too much actual slimming down either.

No laughter? The hard left sez, "No problemo".

Thanks JPS! I need to watch that movie again.

It always seemed significant to me that instead of the usual Commie Conformist dress codes a la Mao and his acolytes, the Nork populace seemed to have some sort of limited personal choice in cut or color. Not so many peasant tunics and caps, more sport coats and ties.

Instead of wanting to be copied, Kim desires to be unique, sui generis. Sumptuary law can cut both ways.

Socialism isn’t funny, starvation isn’t funny, and enjoying K-Pop isn’t funny. All of this is brought to you by the regime that recently
executed 7 people for watching/listening to K-Pop music.

In North Korea it's not that much of a challenge to go eleven days without laughing....A guy walks into a bar. "Why the long face," the bartender asks. "They stretched me out on the rack and killed all my family," the guy replies.

I just learned about the source of the word privilege and sumptuary laws from Jonah Goldberg, and here is another example of it with Kim Jun Un's leather coat.
