Yes, who aborted her and why? Scott Adams some time ago suggested that targeting unarmed females would serve to confuse some actors and enrage others. Men to be defensive of women and children, first. Suppression and incitement seem to the orders and strategy of this period.

Yes, unqualified monotonic change: one step forward, two steps backward.

Indeed, but can they abort the baby, cannibalize her profitable parts, sequester her carbon pollutants, and have her, too? They're playing with a double-edged scalpel. The tell-tale hearts beat ever louder.

What a farce. The Dems should be ashamed of their failures. They have made impeachment as un-severe as a censure, just more time consuming.

Same as Hitler used his brownshirts. He would send them to opposition rallies to create an air of violence around them that good Germans deplored. The longer you resist the idea that they are using the Nazi playbook, the longer you will be puzzled by what they do.

There were 45 senators who voted this impeachment was unconstitutional. Now only 43 voted not guilty. So 2 senators voted both guilty and unconstitutional? How does that work?

Burr thought it was unconstitutional, but since the House voted for it, that made it constitutional and he thought Trump was guilty. I don't get that either. Cassidy changed his mind on constitutionality because he thought the House managers were more convincing than the defense team. He flip-flopped on constitutionality in the two earlier votes on the subject before finally voting to convict, so he's not in the same category as Burr. Cassidy is a doctor, not a lawyer, so legal and constitutional nuances aren't his thing. Collins voted against Trump on constitutionality and conviction, but she often manages to split her votes to keep both sides happy, or if not happy then equally unhappy.

Whatever will they do now? Will they have to do actual legislative work? In one sense I am disappointed this farce has ended; while it proceeded it took up all their time and energy so they couldn't do anything else.

Most Republicans, including those who occasionally diverge, are still the best bet to conserve the American dream: Pro-Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, and our quasi-religious "rule of law" under The Constitution.

I pledge to exercise liberal license to indulge color judgments, not limited to racism, and uphold the Pro-Choice religion of the Progressive Church/Synagogue/Temple/Mosque/Office/Chamber/Clinic's diversity dogma that denies individual dignity, individual conscience, intrinsic value, and normalizes color blocs (e.g. color people "attribute" vs people of color "identity"), color quotas, and affirmative discrimination in a bid for progress: one step forward, two steps backward. @boatbuilder:

Thank you for that, Farmer. Reassures me.

I gave up on what today passes for "conservatism" long ago. If Reagan wasn't "conservative"neither am I.

Reagan explicitly aligned himself with the fusionist conservatism developed by Bill Buckley and Frank Meyer at National Review in the 1950s. It combined economic libertarianism, traditionalist conservatism, and Cold War hawkishness. Reagan helped lay the foundation for our current globalized economy, specifically NAFTA and the WTO. He also supported deregulation of the financial industry. Trade liberalization and deregulation were also supported by Clinton, Gingrich, and George W. Bush. When Bush took office, we had free trade agreements with three countries. When he left, it was 16.

That kind of libertarian thinking on economics has its roots in the Austrian school thinking of Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, and Friedrich von Hayek. It is not conservative. It is a kind of radical individualism. Critiques of 19th century capitalism by conservative southern agrarians like John C. Calhoun predate and predict Marx.

As soon as someone threatened to have Pelosi have to admit that she turned down help from Trump, it was ovah.

But so is my relationship with the GOP

Lurker21 said...

In retrospect Reagan wasn't as good as he may have seemed at the time. A lot of support for Trump comes from people who didn't especially like Reagan (as well as those who did and those who weren't born at the time, though it was also true that much of the support for Reagan came from those who had supported Roosevelt, Truman or Johnson in earlier decades -- renegade Democrats as Reagan once was), but I wouldn't want to have lived through much more Seventies malaise. Reagan did a lot to fix the problems of his time: inflation, recession, Cold War, energy crisis. Now we have new problems (and some of the same ones) and some of the blame goes to people who were in power in the past (including Reagan), but it's always like that. If it's not one thing, it's another. That we manage to keep going in spite of it all and the leaky ship doesn't sink is something.

tim in vermont said...

It’s interesting that if you read the statements of the Republicans who voted guilty, they were voting to convict him of something entirely different than what he was charged with. Nobody said he was trying to direct an insurrection and no evidence that he was was ever presented.

It just proves that the Republican Party has a death wish. I have no desire to stand in their way.

Did Cotton tell you this?

Yes. In the same exact way that Bush told me Afghanistan would fail and the Iraq War would blow up in his face and the way Obama told me that Libya would destabilize North Africa and cause a refugee crisis in the Mediterranean and that supporting Sunni jihadists in Syria would be a phenomenally stupid course of action.

Back in 2013, Tom Cotton and Mike Pompeo published The GOP should support Obama on Syria. In 2018, Cotton was a signatory to a letter opposing Trump's withdraw of US troops from Syria: "We write today to express our concern regarding your Administration’s consideration to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria. We believe that such action at this time is a premature and costly mistake that not only threatens the safety and security of the United States, but also emboldens ISIS, Bashar al Assad, Iran, and Russia."

So in Syria Tom Cotton is against ISIS, Assad, Iran, and Russia. He wants to arm and support the "moderate" forces within Syria. I guess before we give out the money and weapons, we request, "All moderates raise your hand."

I hope this is an intentional snubbing. Netanyahu deserves to be taken down a notch after his outrageous conduct over the last several years. The US is a continental superpower. Israel is a client-state. Netanyahu should be worried about staying in our good graces, not the other way around. His speech to Congress attempting to derail a sitting president's diplomatic affairs was an insufferable act of political interference. 'cause we're dumbshits and we believe it. Just like "we" believe JFK was killed by everyone EXCEPT Oswald - a communist. Because we don't want to believe a COMMUNIST killed JFK. It must be the CIA/FBI/Mafia/Nixon. And Babbitt isn't REALLY dead. Its all a CONSPIRACY. A CONSPIRACY of MORONS.

Can you ever make morons see the truth - when the establishment is telling them lies? Is IQ really a barrier to common sense? Can the so-called "smart boys" make enough DUMBOS think black is white and up is down?

Stay tuned.

I hope this is an intentional snubbing.

This is my shocked face!

Netanyahu deserves to be taken down a notch after his outrageous conduct over the last several years.

Bibi, Boris and Trump... all outrageous men fighting a war against the relentless attacks of the Left.

The US is a continental superpower. Israel is a client-state.

Really? Israel does not act independently of the United States, and frankly often in ways that upset the United States? I think the term strategic ally is much more accurate.

Netanyahu should be worried about staying in our good graces, not the other way around.

I actually agree with this.

His speech to Congress attempting to derail a sitting president's diplomatic affairs was an insufferable act of political interference.

As bad as what Obama and the Left did to him in Israel's elections? Obama directly attacked him and openly interfered in Israel's election.

Had the administration had any real guts, Ambassador Dermer would've been put on a plane back to Tel Aviv.

Yeah, that'll help the peace process! Let's make an enemy of a nation that considers us their greatest strategic and moral ally, and make friends with a nation that calls us the Great Satan and pledges to destroy our civilization and enslave our people.

Israel is not an ally of the United States. An ally is a state with which we have an agreement for mutual support in war. We have no such arrangement with Israel. Civilian settlements in the West Bank are of pretty limited strategic value to the US. Israel has power projection capabilities in the region, but so do Saudi Arabia and Turkey, we don't need a policy of "no daylight" with those countries to benefit from that arrangement.

Yeah, that'll help the peace process! Let's make an enemy of a nation that considers us their greatest strategic and moral ally, and make friends with a nation that calls us the Great Satan and pledges to destroy our civilization and enslave our people.

Friends? Countries aren't buddies with each other. They do business together because it's in their mutual interest to do so. Why do you think Iran has good relations with Russia, China, India, and Japan? Hint: those countries aren't trying to overthrow them.

Israel was never at war with Bahrain or the UAE. Trump's indulgence of MBS included increased support for the Saudi's cruel and destructive war in Yemen, a quagmire from which the Saudis are desperate to extricate themselves. We've also been caught in the middle of Saudi Arabia's hamhanded attempts at strong arming Qatar and Lebanon.

There's a reason you have to rely on sarcasm, strawman, and absurdity. You have strong opinions about a subject you know almost nothing about. You're just being a megaphone for somebody else's talking points.

Look at how countries like Japan or South Korea or India maintain relations in the region. Are they driven by irrational hatred of Jews?

And why?? She was unarmed, and was surrounded by other people including Capitol police. Why the secrecy?? Why don't we know the truth about the Capitol police officer who supposedly got hit with a fire extinguisher, but others deny?? Why the secrecy?? Are they covering something up?? And why are they blaming 2 suicides days later on Trump?? They added them to the count. Do we start counting suicides during the Pandemic and add them to Bidens Covid death count now??? Since we count deaths against the President and all.

I think this demonstrates the power of propaganda, and the ‘don’t look at the man behind the curtain’ attitude of these representatives, tech companies, and the media.

There are people who believe that Trump, literally, created the destruction, that he killed every person who died from COVID, and enacted fascist polices to oppress minorities.

Oh, spare me the melodrama. Your need to reduce this to character flaw and individual moral failing should tell you something. It's a dead end strategy and a roadblock to more constructive dialogue. You can't discuss your position in a rational way because you did not arrive at it in a rational way. It's an article of faith and as such is highly entangled with emotion. It's not enough that the other side be incorrect; they must be evil, too. It's Wokeism 101.

Saudi Arabia launched the war in 2015 with the intent to return Hadi to power. It was a rash, impetuous move by MBS that blew up in his face. Operation "Decisive Storm" lasted 4 weeks. Operation "Restoring Hope" is almost 6 years and counting. The UAE basically abandoned military operations back in 2019. The Saudis have been frantically looking for an escape hatch. Hadi remains on house arrest in Riyadh.

America will never have an effective Middle East strategy so long as we expect the Iranian regime to be overthrown or collapse. There's a reason every other country in the world can do business with Iran. It is foolish for us to insert ourselves into regional conflicts that often have little or nothing to do with us. A much smarter strategy would be cooperating with China and Russia on maintaining a balance of power arrangement in the region between Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
