Biden might not be a competent President. But America might not need one.

Get used to headlines like this: "Pete Buttigieg Isn’t a Transit Visionary. But Biden Might Not Need One" (New York Magazine).

I was wondering why it made any sense that Buttigieg should run the Department of Transportation, but I think questions like that will be answered with a brush off. Oh, what difference does it make?! Let go of your anxiety. Biden is here. And everything's going to be all right.

The financial hole we've gotten ourselves into from our frantic COVID response will take a long time to correct. The deepest pit is coming up soon. All the Politicians who got rave review for hosting the nightly death count show are going to have to transition to filing potholes and scrounging for quarters.

Post WWI Calvin Coolidge got rave public reviews by cutting spending every day to reduce the huge post war debt. Someone who can do this and make it look novel would do well. Biden lacks the imagination.

Biden is a disaster, and everyone know he is. In the private sector, he'd never be allowed to run a small company; much less an entire country. Allowing him his position is treason, or ignorance. Neither are preferable to a country that is only great because honesty is expected, and incompetence is never rewarded.

I have a grudging respect for the Democrats; developing a good political “farm system.” Because the Trump Administration became the place that political careers were killed, not built.

And since the conversation rightly turns to the Elaine Chao comparison, I just wanted to note how well, and how admirably, the two most-GOPe members of the Trump Cabinet performed. Secretary Chao And Secretary DeVos. Who else in the Trump Administration fucked up LESS than Chao and DeVos? And survived the whole chaotic term?

Yeast is a wonderful little plant or animal that, despite the fact that it has only one cell, has figured out how to convert sugar to alcohol. Question about Jennifer Granholm:

When Obama was putting together his cabinet, he pretty much put every sitting female Democratic governor except Jennifer Granholm. I got the impression at the time he was making sure they could not come back to primary him for his second term.

At the time I understood she was ineligible to serve as president due to being born in Canada. If she was ineligible to run for president, he didn't need to worry about her. Now that does not appears that she ineligible and I was wrong.

So what kind of governor was she? Was she offered something and turned it down then or just was never asked?

The point is that Chao’s family wealth is dependent on China.

Their US Company employs 20 people. Their operating subsidiaries are based in tax haven countries, their ships are built in China, and Chinese nationals crew the ships, which fly under the flags of Hong Kong and Liberia.

Did people not know this?

During her tenure, only one State in the entire country spent every year in recession.

And no, she was not, and is not, eligible to become President.

I look forward to Chuck racing to her defense.

The Vault Dweller said...

Well my guess is that Biden is choosing Buttigieg because he wants to elevate him from the farm league. It gives him more of a national view and access to Washington money. There is an Indiana election for US Senator in 2022, but that is probably too soon. But there is also one in 2024, which would be plenty of time. Mr. Buttigieg could hang out in DC for 2 years, make connections, get a bit of a track record beyond Mayor of a college town, assemble a team, and find donors and be set to make a run in 2024. So far a fair amount of the choices that Biden is making, make it look like he is orienting his administration to be a center-left one. Now that the general election is over, he doesn't need the Democrat base anymore. Something tells me the base knows it, if you look at the anger about the Biden conference call.

This is why I think the GOP Majority Senate should bring the filibuster for appointments back if Biden does successfully steal the election.

I don't believe a single Trump appointee has ever been confirmed because of a yes vote by 1+ Democrat Senators. And I believe teh vast majority of Trump nominees were opposed by 90%+ of Democrat Senators

As such, no Democrat President has any right to expect a Republican Senate to confirm his nominees.

Senator Harris voted No on 18 or Trump's 22 initial Cabinet picks. She only voted Yes on Chao (Transportation. Cocaine Mitch's wife), Haley at the UN, Mattis, and Shulkin at Veterans affairs (who was the only one to get 100 yes votes).

So, even not counting their fraud, the Biden Harris is not entitled to any deference in their picks.

Bring them in, question them, and then reject them on Party line votes. And, since there's too many squish "Republicans" who'd be happy to screw us, bring back the filibuster, so it only takes 41 Republican Senators to deep six a Dem nominee

The Vault Dweller said...

I suppose he could aim for a House of Reps seat. I'm just trying to guess what he thinks his possible career path could look like. I doubt he feels a strong vocational calling to be Secretary of Transportation. Plus he had a surprising amount of appeal when he ran for President. I think a lot of the more well-off Lefties like Buttigieg because his demeanor was perceived to have a moderately stoic technocratic appeal. I guess he could always pull a Hillary and discover he really felt like he belonged in some more solidly blue state and relocate there and seek office. He could fit in in Delaware or Connecticut, maybe not Vermont, and I strongly doubt New Hampshire.

Government administration and transportation policy qualifications of Secretaries of Transportation nominated by presidents in the last quarter-century:

Biden nominated a person who had two terms as mayor of 305th-largest city in the US.

Trump appointed someone with eight years of experience in the Cabinet (as Secretary of Labor) and five years' experience in the Department of Transportation (Deputy Administrator of the Maritime Administration, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, Deputy Secretary of Transportation).

Obama's second appointment was the two-term mayor and two-term city councilman of the 15th-largest city in America.

Obama's first appointment was someone who served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for six years.

George W. Bush’s second appointment was the Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, who had before that job worked sixteen years in the Arizona Department of Transportation.

George W. Bush first appointed an incumbent Secretary of Commerce, who had previously been the chairman of the National Civil Aviation Review Commission, before that had been a member (including Chairman and Ranking Minority Member) of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for two decades, and before that been councilman and then mayor of what was then the US's 31st-largest city by population (and is now 10th).

Clinton’s second Secretary of Transportation was a Director of the Federal Highway Administration who had previously spent six years on the Arkansas State Highway Commission.

So, Biden's proposing someone less-qualified in matters of administration and transportation policy than either of Obama's two Secretaries of Transportation . . . and Obama's Secretaries of Transportation combined had qualifications inferior to any single Secretary of Transportation appointed by any other president in the last quarter-century.

It is to be hoped the position is indeed nothing but a sinecure, because that's certainly how Biden, and Obama before him, have been treating it.

I looked at one of the links Inga provided, allegedly exposing a scandal involving Elaine Chao and special favors in Kentucky. I saw a project which provided $11 million to provide stimulus to a worthy project which provided economic development to an area. (“How about that $11 million BUILD grant?” McConnell asked the crowd rhetorically, according to the Owensboro Times. He then recalled his role in securing earlier grants to the city, adding, “It’s done a lot to transform Owensboro, and I was really happy to have played a role in that.”) What else is government about but people vying for money and deciding which projects are most worthwhile and get done? McConnell has served his state very well. Why else do politicians get elected?

In contrast in CA we have politicians funding billions for high speed rail projects that may never be built. see: Will ‘Amtrak Joe’ Biden bail out California’s troubled bullet train? Don’t bet on it

"President Trump was not an immediate enemy of the California project, but over the last two years, his administration became hostile. Earlier this year, the Federal Railroad Administration terminated a $929-million grant issued in 2010 by the Obama administration, saying the rail authority had failed to comply with a requirement that it make 'reasonable progress' in building a bullet train between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

California’s high-speed rail endeavor, launched in 2008 when voters approved $9 billion in bonds, faces daunting challenges. It has a funding shortfall of $80 billion. It may run out of money even to complete a 171-mile starter system between Bakersfield and Merced by 2028, as Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed. The project still lags in acquiring needed land and has encountered problems building bridges.

Even under a friendly Biden White House, California would need to signal a stronger commitment to fund the project and resolve many thorny issues it has avoided, such as a plan to subsidize the service in violation of state law, experts say.

And ultimately, the state needs to come up with a credible plan to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco, not just build an isolated starter system in the Central Valley, as it is now doing."

Which do you prefer: reasonable projects which benefit localities or boondoggle money pits which only benefit the politically connected?

Good luck Pete!

Trans/portation

Gay is an appropriated term from the early to mid-twentieth century intended to normalize and isolate trans/homosexuals from their peers in the transgender spectrum. It was around this time that they conflated sex and gender, and substituted the latter, gender: sex-correlated physical and mental (e.g. sexual orientation) attributes, for the former. Not coincidentally, this was timed with the feminist (i.e. female chauvinist) movement to normalize social progress, including: selective-child, cannibalized-child, pseudo-polygamy (e.g. sexual revolution), etc. under the Pro-Choice quasi-religion (e.g. "ethics") of the Progressive Church/Synagogue/Mosque/Temple/Chamber/Clinic/Office (PC).

Every America degreed engineer I've worked with who'd worked with Indian or Chinese hires- who work cheaper- has said the same things. And the American engineers and workers who work in clean roms, well, those that have visited Chinese subsidiaries have discovered the Chinese don't really understand the concept.

Biden should have appointed somebody competent to run transportation like Elaine Chao.

"Controversies

An October 2018 Politico analysis found that Chao had more than 290 hours of appointments which were labelled as "private" during working hours on working days in the first 14 months of her tenure as Secretary of Transportation. The hours were equivalent to seven weeks of vacation. Former Department of Transportation officials described this as unusual. Current DoT officials stated that the "private" labeling existed to help ensure Chao's security by obscuring her actual activities.[68]
Potential conflicts of interest

As Secretary of Transportation, Chao appeared in at least a dozen interviews with her father, James, a shipping magnate with extensive business interests in China.[69] Ethics experts said the appearances raised ethical concerns, as public officials are prohibited from using their office to profit others or themselves.[69] Federal disclosures cited by The New York Times revealed a gift to Chao and her husband Mitch McConnell from Chao's businessman father James, valued at between US$5 million and $25 million.[70] The company her father founded (and which her sister, Angela, currently runs), The Foremost Group, has extensive ties to the Chinese state and Chinese elites.[70] It obtained hundreds of millions of dollars worth of loans from a bank owned by the Chinese state, has substantial interests tied to a major shipyard funded by and long-term contracts with a steel producer owned by the Chinese state. In what The Times described as "a rarity for foreigners", Angela and James Chao have served on the boards of a Chinese state-owned shipbuilder, and Angela has been on the board of the Bank of China, as well as the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (which was created by the government of China).[70]

From January 2018 to April 2019, 72% of the total tonnage shipped by Foremost was shipped to and from China. The Foremost Group has almost no footprint in the United States other than its headquarters in New York.[70] During the period when Chao appeared with her father at promotional events for the family company, the US Department of Transportation repeatedly sought to cut funding and loan guarantees for domestic American shipping companies, shipyards, and shipbuilders. These proposed budget cuts were rejected by Congress in a bipartisan fashion.[70] Chao's Department also sought for three years to prevent funding for a program that supports the viability of small domestic US shipyards, and a separate program that issues loan guarantees for the construction or reconstruction of ships with American registration.[70]

Chao pledged in 2017 to sell the stock she had earned while she was on the board of directors of Vulcan Materials, one of the largest suppliers of road-paving materials in the United States,[71][72] by April 2018.[71][73] After the Wall Street Journal and other major news outlets reported in late May 2019 that she was still holding the stock, worth $250,000 to $500,000, she sold it on June 3, 2019,[73][72] for a gain of $50,000 since April 2018.[73]

In June 2019, Politico reported that in 2017 Chao had designated her aide Todd Inman as a special liaison "to help with grant applications and other priorities" for Transportation Department projects in the state of Kentucky, the only state to have such a liaison. Inman was to act as an intermediary between the Department, local Kentucky officials, and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, who is Chao's husband. This resulted in grants of at least $78 million for projects in Mitch McConnell strongholds Boone County and Owensboro. Inman had worked on the 2008 and 2014 re-election campaigns of McConnell; McConnell and local officials brought up the grants when he announced in Owensboro in December 2018 that he was running for re-election in 2020. Inman later became Chao's chief of staff.[74]

Why is Marcus still asking why certain commenters are still here? Why doesn’t Marcus take his concerns and email them to Althouse? I suspect if Althouse didn’t want us here our comments would be deleted as are the comments of the unspeakable Ms. M.

When identity is the criteria for gov't posts, it's good to manage expectations.

I know what is sounds like when a pig farmer defends a Trump appointee who used her position to enrich her Chinese family. Did I say pig shit dumb?

Sounds racist. She defends Anglo Joe but criticizes Chao's Chinese family. Of course Joe has a long history of family dealing, it's not just Hunter. Joe ensured his brother Frank got rich on government construction contracts despite having no experience in the industry. There's a continuous theme in that last fact.

I would have thought Dems would lay off this particular criticism for a while since it shows they only care about corruption when it enables them to attack non-leftists.
