Trump lost because despite the Democrats' appalling ineptitude on Covid he never showed real, sustained leadership and competence. Worse he seemed to not take it seriously. In this folly he was egged on by the Covidiot part of his base — like many of the regulars here. But you could also see here people who wanted to support Trump but felt let down by his covid passivity and insouciance.

I know people who were turned off Trump by the Covidiocy of some of his fans.

So the Covidiots here did their bit to elect Biden. I think Michael K probably swayed a few voters away from Trump in his swing state if he is anything like what he is here in real life.

I think you are confused. The Covidiots were the ones who voted for Biden. The pandemic is waning and they are still terrified and want continuing lock downs and mask wearing, neither of which has been shown to be effective.

I think this is a completely accurate and concise assessment. I think Covid was to Trump as Hurricane Katrina was to Bush. In reflecting on Katrina in his memoir Decision Points, Bush wrote: "Landing in Baton Rouge would not have saved any lives. Its benefit would have been good public relations. But public relations matter when you are president, particularly when people are hurting."

I think that's 100% correct. A pet cause of mine that never gets any attraction is the mistake of making the president both head of state and head of government. A head of state should, as much as possible, stand outside and above politics. This is not possible for a head of government. It's a divisive job by its very definition. A head of state should command the respect and legitimacy of at least a supermajority of the population. The only person I can think of in contemporary America who has that kind of popular support is Tom Hanks.

You should read Atkinson's book, Farmer. The section we were listening to as we drove up to our house in Tucson was about how a hit job article in the NY Times in March 2020, accused her and four others of being "covid deniers." She had written an article noting that at that early stage, all the deaths had been either in nursing homes or elderly. The Times had reported the same numbers which were from the CDC but accused her of trying to "minimize the risk" to the general population.

If Trump made a mistake, and it may have been one, it was to rely on bureaucrats like Fauci. He did take the testing away from CDC but he should have relied on more experienced epidemiologists who were actually caring for patients. It would have required ID specialists since virtually all epidemiologists are bureaucrats.

I have never denied the existence of Trump Derangement Syndrome, which I think is a very real phenomenon, and I have always said that the media's reaction to Trump is wildly over-the-top and wrongheaded. I know many Trump supporters who share those opinions and who were nonetheless totally turned off by his performance during the daily press conferences. I remember my father, a Trump voter and moderate supporter, watching them daily and then immediately calling me afterwards to discuss it.

At press conference on February 27th, Azar says, "At the same time, what every one of our experts and leaders have been saying for more than a month now remains true: The degree of risk has the potential to change quickly, and we can expect to see more cases in the United States." Anne Schuchat from the CDC said: "Our aggressive containment strategy here in the United States has been working and is responsible for the low levels of cases that we have so far. However, we do expect more cases, and this is a good time to prepare." And then during Q&A Trump said, "I think every aspect of our society should be prepared. I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up." And later said, "And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done."

This was the same day that the 15th case confirmed the likelihood of community transmission.

Rtands is a railroad trade mag. In Washington state since January there have been 46 instances where shunts have been used to attempt derailment.

Last week an oil tanker train was derailed, apparently on purpose.

It does not take much to derail a train. It can be done pretty much anywhere.

Taking the bolts out of a rail splice plate or loosening spikes on a couple of ties works pretty well too.

A few hundred people could wreak havoc on rail transport.

So who is doing this? Diehard trumpistas or antifa types.

No, Canadian. Trump lost because, let's face it everyone, the American people are no longer what they once were. He lost because Americans long ago voted for societal, cultural, national suicide. Because the American people are stupid, self-righteous, relativists who long ago were no longer to be trusted.

Yes, there was substantial and overwhelming election fraud. And there was also a majority of people who, minus that fraud, voted to fuck the country (and themselves) by a majority vote for the idiot, demented, obnoxious buffoon Joe Biden.

He implored governors to not let the cure be worse than the disease. He signed PPP/CARES act into law. He deployed the two medical care ships to NY and LA at govs request. But yeah, he’s the one that displayed no sympathy or care about Americans going through COVID pandemic. Don’t forget the Obama Biden admin left our supplies at low tide after H1N1. Had to first make up for that huge deficit. How Biden got away w his COVID schtick is mind boggling. Actually, I know how.

The first listing was something like $200 million. It was an estate but a shock when I looked.

I'm guessing that was the Misty Isle Estate (aka Wax Orchard, the airport). Top of the island....not beach front, and the old Nike missile base is nearby.

Tom Stewart was the CEO of Volume Services of America. He was semi-despised on Vashon because his property included an airport, and he would fly a helicopter into Seattle. He was also a major contributor to the GOP.

Every 4th of July he would pay penance by floating a barge into Quartermaster Harbor, and launching a 30-minute fireworks display.

His entire second family died in an Arizona helicopter crash. It seems that he was flying in the right hand seat with his 4-year-old daughter in his lap. It's thought that his daughter managed to kick the control stick, and flex the aircraft so violently that the rotors conflicted. Subsequently, the aircraft fell rock from a couple of thousand feet.

It's amazing how petty some people can become when a GOP icon falls. The Estate is somehow tied in with the Volume Services business, and I'm sure that makes the sale more difficult, but you can't believe the pettiness every time the newspaper announces that another real estate deal for the property has fallen through.

Bainbridge is the better place. And not just because you can get off of it w/o a boat. That’s where I keep a place, so you can be my island-mate!

The problem with Bainbridge is the bridge. Not just the ferries but the through traffic. When I still owned my property, which was on the smaller island, Maury, there was a proposal to build a bridge. It would go from Tacoma to Vashon to the peninsula. It would have been a bit like the bridge to Mercer. They held a public meeting at the high school. 10,000 people showed up ! The vote was about 98% NO !

Vashon used to have a walkon ferry to downtown Seattle. You could park your car at the terminal, go to the city, have dinner and take the ferry back. When I was there a couple of years ago, that walk on ferry was gone. Who would want to go to Seattle now anyway ?

Bainbridge is huge. The through traffic is isolated from the real activity of the island. Not that I’d want to so far out on the island such that I have a view of Bremerton. Still, it’s easy to exist on the island w/o messing w/ the through traffic. But, the bridge does get you to the Silverdale Costco, and the recently developed and older shopping stuff in Poulsbo.

And, I like the bridge because I keep places in Kitsap (Poulsbo) and Jefferson (one in Port Townsend and one near Forks), so it’s easy to bounce around different community lifestyles w/o flying. I love driving. Especially when I find fun and safe (except for the idiot animals (not just deer, I’ve had three bears and one cougar jump out) roads.

Fun to read you guys talking about Vashon and Bainbridge. I was born in Tacoma and mostly grew up in Kitsap County. Didn't realize how lucky we were to live in such a magical place until we all grew up and moved away. My husband and I got married on Vashon and my parents still live in the area. It'll always be home but sadly we can't even visit these days, let alone consider moving back there.

My grandparents' house was very near Green Lake; they lived in it for fifty years and it was sold when they died in the late nineties. Grandfather was a longshoreman who had a degree in civil engineering from UW. The money was better on the docks, but he was a bright and educated guy. My aunts and uncles are kicking themselves for not hanging onto the house. They'd have a tidy little profit instead of the pittance they split back then.

That said, the media knew with absolute certainty and with moral clarity that Trump was wrong, wrong, wrong in his person, in his policies, in golf game, in his morals, in his hair style... All this negative coverage had a great deal to do with his defeat. You don't have to be right to be convincing. In the end, the media were better salesmen than Trump.....I live on the upper east side of Manhattan. It's a pleasant enough place to live. People used to like to live here for the restaurants, the museums, the shows. the parks. The parks are still available but all the glamour is dimming or extinguished. Real estate values are declining and, given another mayor like DeBlasio, may finally topple. I wonder how long it took for Detroit to finally go belly up. Was it like divorce gradually then suddenly?.....I understand that through all those years of decline Mayor Coleman Young never received any negative media coverage. He was kind of the reverse of President Trump....Coleman Young must have done something wrong and President Trump must have done something right, but such stories go untold.

You could buy some really nice skis that were blemished at the factory when I was a kid. In fact, going to to the factory to buy the blemishes was a pilgrimage for most of my buddies.

All the kewl kids had K2s!!

Today, K2 is just a sorry Chinese brand name. The old factory is still there in the middle of Vashon Island trying to find a new purpose.

Here's a recollection......
I graduated in Mech. Eng. at the UW (not the same UW as our hostess). K2 would troll the engineering placement center with recruiters.

They were allegedly looking for ME's to test, and evaluate their skis. Later on, I learned that whereas I could carve turns in the mogul field, and express my self meaningfully, I still didn't have the right curves!?!!

Quit stealing elections and then you won't have to listen to it.

OK...I am NOT a fan of Washington State Ferries, but it is a huge impediment to the homeless living under I-5 from moving to Vashon. Don't tell Jay Inslee.

So, in some sense they do protect property values for a bunch of Subaru driving sandal-n-sock shuffling white people.

Guys with beards to cover their double chin.

So is the empty ammo shelf at the sporting goods store!

The hand guns, and rifles are gone as well.

You figure it out, bitch!!

The election wasnt stolen because it didn’t need to be. Trump messed up covid, and much of America decided rioting was okay.

Trump is a con man who has tricked many of you.

He’s not as amazing as you think he is.

He isn’t amazing, but the economy he built by 2019 certainly was. Let me know when Biden-Harris does as well.

Sprezzatura said...

Big Mike,

Ha ha. The government does build jobs when it borrows from the future to throw a trillion dollars a year into annual growth. Presumably you don’t think you’ve been tricked as you support Keynesian economy boosting and the head of government being the king re responsibility re building the economy. That’s standard conservative thinking. No tricking you.

I’m sure Biden can satisfy your desire to further liquidate the future of America so we can spike numbers today. AOC is with you and Biden too.

My daughter emailed me a Zillow web page featuring our old Seattle home, which we bought in the 1970's for about $56K.

There was a wreck of a house in West Seattle that sold for about $400K to $450K about 3 years ago. This house was small and so filthy that buyers could not go inside to look at. Mold was everywhere.

We bought our Bellevue house in 1990 for $180K and sold it last year for $765K. Our new construction house outside of Snoqualmie on 6.5-acres will be worth about $1MM.

Someone needs to explain how it was a red wave except for the top spot. It does not compute.

First not much of a wave, look at the senate. An ebbing not a wave.
Second, many will prudently vote for divided government. Can you work out how that affects the vote?
I would say nice try but really it wasn’t.

Trump didn't mess up anything. He shut down flights from China before any other country did. And at the same time, the Democrats (Nancy and Mario Cuomo) were telling people to go to Chinatown and hug a Chinaman for the Chinese New Year. They were also telling people it was no big deal. We've covered all the details here, so Ken B is obviously a fucking liar--a cocksucker as we used to say. Basement Joe and Obama couldn't draw a crowd in the final days larger than a high school car wash by cheerleaders wearing boiler suits. Trump was pulling in Rolling Stones concert crowds. The Democrats so believe their own shit that they have blocked every attempt to examine the votes and the counting machines. That screams innocence, doesn't it? Cheating gets a beating. It's coming.

I told you about Covid-21 when I told you about the Great Reset/The Fourth Industrial Revolution. It was in documents in late 2019.

Bellevue. The Evergreen Point - 520 bridge was completed around 1962. Immediately thereafter, several of my childhood neighbors bolted for Bellevue from NE Seattle (the U-District where you can find Laslo). Cheaper land, and bigger houses was/were now just a $0.35 toll road away. If you understand the geography of Seattle*, then you understand why the bridge was a hand-out to home builders. The housing pipeline to the north, and south was packed. Interstate-5 was under construction, and had yet to provide additional north-south growth.

Going east would be easier with a bridge.

After the war, the real estate values in the Seattle Central District collapsed because the returning veterans headed for the cheaper land in the hinterlands made accessible by GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

Many of the veterans were Washington grads, and there was cheap land around the University. I have several anecdotes. Furthermore, many of the veterans became members of the Army 313th reserve group** (They seemed to know how to run the local Boy Scout groups). The unit met either at Fort Lawton (Discovery Park), or Sand Point Naval Air Base (Magnuson Park).***

* North-south valleys filled by lakes, and created by the receding ice age....er, I mean...global warming.
** People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
*** My Dad kept way more firearms, and ammunition than I could find at Cabbalas today.

Our first Covid-19 case was a man from Washington state returning home after a trip to Wuhan, China, on Jan. 15, who sought medical attention on Jan. 19 at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, WA. Trump shut down flights from mainland China and Hong Kong on 1/31/20 - but infected passengers from anywhere else on earth were unimpeded on inbound flights. New York became our first hotspot because of flights arriving from Europe.

So?
you cited facts as they are. What exactly was done wrong. Meaning you have a perfect response as it should have been, with the clarity of 20/20 hindsight. You left that part out.

What recommendations by the Gods, Fauci and Birx, did President Trump fail to implement?

Show your work.

iowan2 said...

Gadfly,
Don't forget that all the Democrat leadership railed against the few travel bans put in place and President Trump was labeled a xenophobe for doing what he did. That leaves your options of what should have been done, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, very limited

iowan2 said...

Gadfly, you also have to calculate you response to adhere to the recommendations of the scientists of the World Health Organization.

So that we all know, please give the name(s) of the world leader(s) who did not 'mess up covid', and the statistical difference between their results and Trump's.

If anybody 'messed up' COVID [besides China], it was WHO, the CDC and Anthony Fauci. And they're supposed to be 'experts'.
