"It’s hard to fathom, but it has been 36 years since a man and a woman ran together on a Democratic Party ticket."
Hello?? It's been 4 years. What's the problem here? When the woman isn't the secondary member of a pair, it's hard to see her as a woman at all??!
Here's the whole column: "No Wrist Corsages, Please/Has America grown since 1984, or will the knives still be out for Biden’s running mate?"
How long will it take to get a correction? There's already at least one comment over there taking her to task for this blunder.
By the way, check out the photograph of Geraldine Ferraro: she's wearing a dress with a pattern I've got to call brick wall.
UPDATE at 9:39 a.m.: The gaffe has been corrected. It's rewritten this way now: "It’s hard to fathom, but it took another 36 years for a man to choose to put a woman on the Democratic ticket with him."
At the bottom of the column is an acknowledgment of the rewrite: "Correction: Aug. 8, 2020/An earlier version of this column incorrectly stated the history of the Democratic ticket. It has been 36 years since a man chose a woman to run as his vice-president on the Democratic ticket, not 36 years since a man and a woman ran together on a Democratic Party ticket."

She also ignored/forgot McCain/Palin.
Oopps, Dowd specified Democratic ticket.
Maureen’s been hitting the edibles again!
Talk about your memory hole.
Walter Mondale and his female running mate from back East. Well the obvious parallel would have been back East Joe with Minnesota nice Amy. Unfortunately a democratic run city killed that possibility.
Now we'll get 1972. McGovern and Shirley Chisholm.
Apparently some things are best left forgotten.
How many people, even remembering that Hillary Clinton's VP candidate was a man, can remember his name?
Hillary has been cancelled.
Cinderella had a happy ending.
Gimme a brick!
Forget it Jake, it's the New York Times.
when they possess cervix but shut down business down there - what to call them?
woman no more?
Built like a brick sh*t house.
Well, not really.
[Expression from my youth.]
Song: She's a Brick Hooooouse,she mighty, mighty....
Gold brick?
They have the correction up now. They changed it from man and a woman ran together on a Democratic Party ticket, to a man chose a woman to run as his VP. Needed to forget that Hillary ran because the truth would prove that the whole premise of the column, that America is sexist and always will be, is a lie.
Caribou Barbie is one nutty puppy.
Maureen Dowd, The New York Times 4 July 2009
When the woman isn't the secondary member of a pair, it's hard to see her as a woman at all??!
There's always some hidden, deeper meaning in any careless writing, isn't there?
In the immortal words of Miss Emily Litella
Excuse: "I meant where the woman was VP."
For all the hype, the Dems have not really liked the Clintons for about 25 years. Their enthusiasm is mostly an act. When Obama said, "You're likable enough," he was lying. It is not all that shocking that Hillary would be a non-entity, a non-person to them.
So, NOW you're claiming that Hilary is a woman?
No matter How, she self identifies ?
Dowd really pulled a boner!
But the first blunder is that Ferraro was ever "a serious contender" for veep.
She was always a lightweight gimmick, never a pick that showed that Mondale was serious about governing. Certainly the two of them were never a serious threat to defeat Reagan.
Blogger clint said...How many people, even remembering that Hillary Clinton's VP candidate was a man, can remember his name?
You mean the father of that Minneapolis antifa guy named Kaine?
Of course, there was McCain and Palin too - but we all like to try to forget that debacle.
Liberals view the world through a peephole. Like a couple of years ago when one famously claimed that Corey Booker was the only Black member of the Senate. Tim Scott was understandably surprised.
I dunno, were the knives out for Palin?
It’s Maureen in America...
What a weird column. As stated by others, Palin ran with McCain in 2008. And Hillary ran in 20216, so why is Dowd reaching back to 1984 and asking if "we" have grown since then? Plus, I'll just echo what Mark said, Mondale didn't have a chance in 1984, and everyone knew it. His pledge to raise everyone's taxes, and his picking Ferrero were hail mary passes.
Liberal/leftists are so bizarre. They spent all of 2008 trashing Palin, and then when Hillary lost, cried about "The glass ceiling" and how all those "nasty,racist/sexist" Trump voters just couldn't accept a STRONG WOMAN. IRC, Bill Scher on BHTV, cried about "How can I explain to my daughter how a woman can't be POTUS"? This from a guy, who sneered at Palin for 8 years!
I'll say it again, its time for new blood at the NYT. HOw long are they going to keep printing Dowd, Friedman, Ross Doughnut, Brooks, etc. They haven't said anything interesting in 12 years. You can throw in their token black guy too. It used to be bob Herbert. Don't know who it is now.
Who can even remember the name of Hillary's choice for VP? Talk about dustbin of history.
Unfair!
OTOH, when Biden wins in November, who will remember him six months later?
How old is Maureen? Is she loosing her memory? How could she forget Hillary?
You might get the idea that little actual thought goes into her writing, which is fine, but why is she getting paid so much for it, and why do people read it?
Delicious to watch the Grand Dame of anti-sexist be one. Obviously like white supremacy it is pernicious

The evil Tim Kaine, Hamburglar of Virginia, is remembered, as is his evil spawn, so grievously deprived of a bullet in the head. Most VP candidates weren't as shit as Kaine.
Then again perhaps time and distance has softened our views on such as Henry Wallace, LBJ, and even Al Gore, who after all was, at one time, something like a man. ("Of course it's illegal. That's why it's covert. Go grab his ass.")
NYT, your quality adjusted life-years is all used up.
Time for MoDo to retire from politics and write about what she does best: Hollywood and mean girls
I think America is ready for a trans woman as VP. Is there time to get Booker fixed?
I am glad the correction makes Dowd look stupid.
Hillary isn't a woman - she's a crook. A Private Server family enrichment serving crook.
The first!
The simple and obvious mistake is that Dowd wrote "a man and a woman", thinking of a male nominee selecting a female running mate. She may not have thought of Hillary because Hillary was the nominee in 2016. Besides that, Biden's female pick has a good chance of becoming the first female president in the event Biden wins.
But, I wonder if there is a NYT editor who reviews Dowd's column before it's published. If so, that person is guiltier than Dowd is.
Dowd just wanted the chance to snub Shrillary!.
I was willing to accept Ferraro as the most recent, probably for the same reason that Dowd wrote it. Hillary was the wife of a former president, not a woman.

Certainly old enough to be experiencing that Baby Boomer mental decline that's been in the news lately.
I keep hearing about all those editors and "layers and layers of fact checkers" at the New York Times, but they still keep letting dumb mistakes like this get through quite frequently.
When the woman isn't the secondary member of a pair, it's hard to see her as a woman at all??!
If she's leading, how can she be doing it backwards and in heels?
People still read Maureen Dowd?!?
@ Althouse
You are a strict stickler...I dub thee "Strickler." I hope you're not this tough on Meade's cooking...
Yep! That's MoDo!
She also ignored/forgot McCain/Palin.
Palin is a woman-woman. Dowd meant a feminist-woman.
She should consider utilizing a proofreader; too bad she's single.
Also, a woman has never selected a woman as VP.
Obviously, Hillary hates women, but Dowd is loathe to admit it.
It's been 36 years since Mo Dowd had a boyfriend.
Say what you want about Mondale and McGovern, both were decent honest people who were not out to wreck the country, however misguided their policy ways. I can’t say that about Biden and his masters.
how soon they forget Felonia Von Pantload !!!
How many people, even remembering that Hillary Clinton's VP candidate was a man, can remember his name?
Tim "teh Leperous Leprechaun" Kaine?
Giving Dowd a column is a blunder already.
In all fairness to Ms. Dowd, Tim Kaine is only suspected of being male.
She does mention Clinton's 2016 campaign in the article. Bad writing and editing.
But, yeah, just layers and layers and layers of fact checkers.
"It's been 36 years since Mo Dowd had a boyfriend."
Not so...he is known as Dee Cell...
Maureen Dowd did not commit suicide next week.
"OTOH, when Biden wins in November, will he even remember six months later?"
I fixed it for you.
It's a Special Olympics type event, but Maureen Dowd is my favorite Times columnist. I actually read her. I don't read them, but Brooks and Friedman are occasionally quoted saying interesting things. Kristof and Krugman are far and away the most irritating. Krugman, in particular, deserves special mention because he couples sanctimonious thinking with loathsome personal mannerisms. He looks and talks the way he writes. If he were your neighbor, you'd check to make sure he wasn't on some kind of sex offender registry. Krugman is the true heir of Duranty.
Before I begin to read the comments, I've got a confession: I cannot recall who Mrs Clinton's running mate was. The Clintonian enormity erased the name from my memory, I guess. Have been thinking about this, ruminating, for the length of time it takes to perform Beethoven's Piano Sonata no 31, and the name still hasn't surfaced. Tsk.
Tim Kaine? Eh; one of these mornings at three a.m. the name might have floated through the waves of my barely wafeful mind.
We all want to forget Hillary
She is the Vietnam of candidates
She forgot the Clinton/Kaine ticket because Kaine was a eunuch and Hillary is clearly a Beast!
@Marc, Hillary's VP nominee was Smarmy Tim Kaine.
In all fairness Hillary didn't campaign much. So mostly correct.
"Before I begin to read the comments, I've got a confession: I cannot recall who Mrs Clinton's running mate was. "
LOL. Me too. And who was Kerry's running mate? We remember Ryan because he became Speaker of the House. LIebermann was a well known senator. Kemp was a Conservative Media star. Ferraro was the first Women VP. Benson is remembered for the "I knew jack kennedy, etc. debate quote".
Hillary is forgettable enough.

I can't believe the NY Times forgot about the Clinton-Kaine ticket, the McCain-Palin ticket, and the Romney-Ryan ticket
When the only reason to post Dowd is to jeer at her mistakes, perhaps posting Dowd should be retired as a blog subject.
