Wow! What a blunder in Maureen Dowd's new column!

Do you see it?

"It’s hard to fathom, but it has been 36 years since a man and a woman ran together on a Democratic Party ticket."

Hello?? It's been 4 years. What's the problem here? When the woman isn't the secondary member of a pair, it's hard to see her as a woman at all??!

Here's the whole column: "No Wrist Corsages, Please/Has America grown since 1984, or will the knives still be out for Biden’s running mate?"

How long will it take to get a correction? There's already at least one comment over there taking her to task for this blunder.

By the way, check out the photograph of Geraldine Ferraro: she's wearing a dress with a pattern I've got to call brick wall.

UPDATE at 9:39 a.m.: The gaffe has been corrected. It's rewritten this way now: "It’s hard to fathom, but it took another 36 years for a man to choose to put a woman on the Democratic ticket with him."

At the bottom of the column is an acknowledgment of the rewrite: "Correction: Aug. 8, 2020/An earlier version of this column incorrectly stated the history of the Democratic ticket. It has been 36 years since a man chose a woman to run as his vice-president on the Democratic ticket, not 36 years since a man and a woman ran together on a Democratic Party ticket."

Walter Mondale and his female running mate from back East. Well the obvious parallel would have been back East Joe with Minnesota nice Amy. Unfortunately a democratic run city killed that possibility.

Now we'll get 1972. McGovern and Shirley Chisholm.

They have the correction up now. They changed it from man and a woman ran together on a Democratic Party ticket, to a man chose a woman to run as his VP. Needed to forget that Hillary ran because the truth would prove that the whole premise of the column, that America is sexist and always will be, is a lie.

For all the hype, the Dems have not really liked the Clintons for about 25 years. Their enthusiasm is mostly an act. When Obama said, "You're likable enough," he was lying. It is not all that shocking that Hillary would be a non-entity, a non-person to them.

So, NOW you're claiming that Hilary is a woman?

But the first blunder is that Ferraro was ever "a serious contender" for veep.

She was always a lightweight gimmick, never a pick that showed that Mondale was serious about governing. Certainly the two of them were never a serious threat to defeat Reagan.

Of course, there was McCain and Palin too - but we all like to try to forget that debacle.

Liberals view the world through a peephole. Like a couple of years ago when one famously claimed that Corey Booker was the only Black member of the Senate. Tim Scott was understandably surprised.

rcocean said...

What a weird column. As stated by others, Palin ran with McCain in 2008. And Hillary ran in 20216, so why is Dowd reaching back to 1984 and asking if "we" have grown since then? Plus, I'll just echo what Mark said, Mondale didn't have a chance in 1984, and everyone knew it. His pledge to raise everyone's taxes, and his picking Ferrero were hail mary passes.

Liberal/leftists are so bizarre. They spent all of 2008 trashing Palin, and then when Hillary lost, cried about "The glass ceiling" and how all those "nasty,racist/sexist" Trump voters just couldn't accept a STRONG WOMAN. IRC, Bill Scher on BHTV, cried about "How can I explain to my daughter how a woman can't be POTUS"? This from a guy, who sneered at Palin for 8 years!

I'll say it again, its time for new blood at the NYT. HOw long are they going to keep printing Dowd, Friedman, Ross Doughnut, Brooks, etc. They haven't said anything interesting in 12 years. You can throw in their token black guy too. It used to be bob Herbert. Don't know who it is now.

Who can even remember the name of Hillary's choice for VP? Talk about dustbin of history.

Unfair!

OTOH, when Biden wins in November, who will remember him six months later?

The evil Tim Kaine, Hamburglar of Virginia, is remembered, as is his evil spawn, so grievously deprived of a bullet in the head. Most VP candidates weren't as shit as Kaine.

Then again perhaps time and distance has softened our views on such as Henry Wallace, LBJ, and even Al Gore, who after all was, at one time, something like a man. ("Of course it's illegal. That's why it's covert. Go grab his ass.")

The simple and obvious mistake is that Dowd wrote "a man and a woman", thinking of a male nominee selecting a female running mate. She may not have thought of Hillary because Hillary was the nominee in 2016. Besides that, Biden's female pick has a good chance of becoming the first female president in the event Biden wins.

But, I wonder if there is a NYT editor who reviews Dowd's column before it's published. If so, that person is guiltier than Dowd is.

Doug said...

Dowd just wanted the chance to snub Shrillary!.

rhhardin said...

I was willing to accept Ferraro as the most recent, probably for the same reason that Dowd wrote it. Hillary was the wife of a former president, not a woman.

It's a Special Olympics type event, but Maureen Dowd is my favorite Times columnist. I actually read her. I don't read them, but Brooks and Friedman are occasionally quoted saying interesting things. Kristof and Krugman are far and away the most irritating. Krugman, in particular, deserves special mention because he couples sanctimonious thinking with loathsome personal mannerisms. He looks and talks the way he writes. If he were your neighbor, you'd check to make sure he wasn't on some kind of sex offender registry. Krugman is the true heir of Duranty.

Before I begin to read the comments, I've got a confession: I cannot recall who Mrs Clinton's running mate was. The Clintonian enormity erased the name from my memory, I guess.
