Urgent to jazz fans -- Newport Jazz Festival music from the '50s, when it began, and '60s golden years on tonight and three Sunday nights total. Only from 8 pm to 9 pm ET on WRTI, streams on WRTI.org. Tonight -- 40 minutes from now as I write -- features Clifford Brown, the Max Roach Quartet from 1955; Dave Brubeck and group, and Horace Silver Quintet, both from 1960.

Two more Sunday nights will follow for the same hour. Magical times at Newport, esp compared to today!

A question for everybody. It appears that the builder did not seal the grout in the bathroom we use for guests and over the past few years it has gotten pretty dirty. I'd like recommendations for grout cleaning compounds and grout sealers. No homemade concoctions, please, just stuff I can buy at Lowes or Home Depot or using the Althouse Amazon portal.

Also the grout in our shower has gotten yellow from the minerals in our tap water. Anyone have a recommendation for a good cleaner? Doesn't have to be the same cleaner as suggested for floor tiles.

That is why, for the past four years, it is almost exclusively stories claiming Trump is a traitorous Russian double-agent or that he colluded with Ukraine or is a white supremacist or is mentally ill that have populated the Google or Facebook news feeds where tens of millions congregate to get their “news.”

We were in the Wisconsin Northwoods the other day. At the local convenience store aout 10% customers were wearing masks. And one person we talked to said the local sheriff announced that he will not be enforcing any mask ban (which took effect yesterday I believe) because of "liberty." And someone else said that he was ok with us wearing masks if we wanted.

In short, we're fucked. Rural Wisconsin is no different than rural any other state. For whatever reason the virus isn't a big deal .. until it hits home, which it will. Tic Toc

I maxxed out on her in 2018 and she ran a lousy campaign. This year I am backed off. If she debates Kelly, maybe. I think it all depends on Trump.

Remember that scene from The Simpsons where Krusty shouts out, "Poochie's dead!" And the kids all cheer?

Well, Michael Vaughn is dead!

(I hope. Lots of people never really die on Alias.)

Still never bought him and Sydney being together.

Sorry about the spoiler.

Some of you might not have known that they killed off Poochie because he was a despised and hated character.

It's a production of NPR Music, so you may be able to access and stream it any time it's convenient. Very good of its kind, you know what from the names.... performances definitely lit up by the Newport summer vibe.

Fuck Crimesha Again

A State Trooper went to the Dunkin Donuts at Oak Park and Archer and when he took a look inside his coffee cup, found what appeared to be foreign matter floating around inside. A review of the security tapes revealed this asshole spitting in the Trooper's cup:

Picture of asshole

He was promptly arrested and fired (not necessarily in that order) and the Dunkin has made numerous efforts to reach out to nearby Departments to stave off the inevitable bad publicity and backlash.

Tampering with food is a felony last time we checked and there is irrefutable video evidence of him doing it. Guess who isn't charging him with the top count?

A little update on the guy pictured below who worked at Dunkin’ Donuts on archer and oak park. He was arrested for spitting in cops coffee. Well our state’s attorney decided to deny felony charges against him. Even though they have video evidence that he spit several times in the cops coffee and then lied and said it was dead bugs and mold from the coffee machines. They took him to the hospital for blood testing and the cop has to wait to see if he has a number of diseases and or illnesses.

Anyone want to guess what any other person would be charged with if they gobbed in Crimesha's coffee? Or Prickwrinkle's? Or Groots?

Anyone think the media will pick up on this?

@steve uhr, well in our rural county in Virginia we’ve had 651 total cases out of a population of around 94,000. Only 49 hospitalizations — that’s total number that have been hospitalized since February, not just the number currently hospitalized — and only 7 deaths total due to COVID-19. It’s a serious disease, but not nearly the killer that opioids were prior to Trump’s economic boom 2017 - 2019.

@BigMike: SoftScrub does wonderful work in a number of applications such as the ones you describe. I suggest applying it liberally, making sure it is in contact with the surface you wish to clean, let it sit for a bit, and then scrub and wash it out with a toothbrush and water.

Meanwhile, life in a seaside resort community during Covid mini-lockdown is pretty good. Everything is open but the crowds are half or so what they usually be. We could always get in wherever (we're locals now) but it is even easier now. The tourists seem nicer, except for the New Yorkers, they're always jerks.

One more week until mrs. stevew and I celebrate 40 years of marriage. And celebrate we will.

Great photos. The blues and grays are interesting. I've been photographing sunrises here for awhile - the sun rises over the ocean here - and don't ever get those colors. Remarkably lovely.

I've been seeing several posts on the internet, including from the FDA, discussing Alternate Sweeteners to sugar, with 'serious'-sounding discussion of Aspartame, Sucralose, Stevia ("Natural") and so on.

Oddly, one almost NEVER hears about actually natural - and safe - "Sugar Alcohols", such as commonly seen in "Sugar Free" food products. These include Maltitol, Xylitol, and Sorbitol.

Sugar "ALCOHOLS" - what an unfortunate name: these are not the sort od 'alcohol' one thinks of: they are natural products which in most cases taste JUST LIKE sugar, but are not used as sugar by the body. Some are said to be capable of upsetting delicate stomachs & so on, but none are harmful.

I happen to have Type 2 Diabetes, diagnosed in 1989. I just don't eat much "Sugar: (sucrose) - and I don't miss it, although some do. The one place I actually miss sugar is in my coffee (A liter of it first thing in the mornig).

But I don't use SUGAR, I use a sugar alcohol called ERYTHRITOL which looks and tastes exactly like sucrose> It has exactly ZERO effect on the sugar content of my blood, which I test at leas daily.

Since this stuff tastes good, does NOT raise my sugar level, that's what I use. It's been my stalpe for over 20 years.

I ofted see doubts about the hearthfulness of artificial sweeteners, but since they TASTE so bad in coffee, I am not temped, especially when there is a product which does the job so well.

Excitement in my family. My kid managed to finally get engaged. They met halfway trough senior year, and by graduation were a item. That was 7 years ago. Five years of grad school (in neighboring states) followed by two years living together. We were hoping to hear something when they popped up here a month ago. Nope. I think that they were waiting to tell their partner’s mother, which was Friday afternoon. They then hit the road back to CO Saturday. We are, of course, talking more grandkids, though the knot has yet to be tied. Not getting any more out of my partner’s two kids, but getting a bit too close to great grandkids.

After getting my chemistry degree, my first job was making cleaning chemicals. Tile grout is one of the hardest things to clean (whiten). Grout is alkaline. The best way to whiten is with a strong acid. I recommend hydrochloric (HCl). To seal, polyurethanes are best.

Personally, I ripped out the tile in my house and went to easy maintenance.

Don't have an answer to Big Mike's grout question but it reminded me of a helpful home tip that I discovered all by my lonesome. Got a microwave turned yellow 'cause the fam can't seem to understand that microwave popcorn needs to be watched closely (or rather, listened to closely)? Scrub it with Zep grout cleaner from Home Depot and it will be whiter than a Portland BLM rio...er, peaceful protest.
My finest hour. Wear gloves. And a mask.

Wisconsin is allegedly gaining momentum on new infections and deaths. But looking at cases & deaths per Million population one has to wonder how big a deal it is.

For the USA, it is currently 478 deaths per million. WI is 163 deaths per million. WI has a population of 5.8 Million. 5.8 x 478 = 2772. 2772 - 948 (WI death toll) = 1824 deaths to reach 478/M. The current 7 day rolling average is 8 deaths/day. 1824/8 = 228 days to reach the current average death/M for the USA. That is 7 to 8 months, and would assume no deaths anywhere else in the USA at this point.

New York is 1685 deaths/M. For WI, 5.8 x 1985 = 9773 deaths to match that rate. 9773 - 948 = 8825. 8825/8 = 1103 days to reach the New York rate. That would be slightly more than 3 years.

One of the underrated things about the Midwest is our partly cloudy skies, which the Althouse blog shows make the best sunrises.

When I lived in Oregon, the winter was 95% cloudy, while the summer was 95% cloudless. Both got old quickly.

@Big Mike
If the dirt and minerals have gotten into the grout (sounds like that is the case) no cleaning product is going to restore it. Try some straight bleach with a stiff brush. If that doesn't make an acceptable difference you will have to replace the grout. If you're handy it's not that hard, just time consuming. There are companies that specialize in grout replacement at a reasonable cost if not.

For cleaner- this is good: Aqua Mix 1 Qt. Heavy-Duty Tile and Grout Cleaner
For sealing this from QEP: 12 oz. Grout Sealer Applicator Roller Bottle with 2 Wheels
that's if only your grout needs sealing. If you have porous tiles-Aqua Mix Sealer's Choice Gold 24 oz. Penetrating Sealer

If your floor grout is light colored- I made that mistake- there are dyes available to darken them. Check your local flooring department for recommendations.

During the last couple of weeks I completely lost control over news intake. At all hours of the day I'd be reading news streams, reading side bar stories. But, finally I realized that I was looking desperately for signs of sanity among the Dems and the major media. You'd think I'd know better. But I came from one of those Irish Catholic Boston families and apparently somehow there was a residual belief that the Democrats wanted to help the little guy and that men and women still wanted to be journalists and writers, not that they all together had become propagandists and propagandists and propagandists and illiterate contemptibles at that. And I was feeling sad - mourning, if you will. Oh, I know where the green grass is still growing and the fresh flowers are coming up. I have my links and connections. And I don't believe America will fall. But the post-war American Democrats and their allied writers and artists - and sports and movies as fun - the wind has swept over them and they are gone and their place knows them no more. In their place are botoxed, demented, old power-clingers and young illiterates shouting a righteous jargon that allows them to damage the black community in the name of black power and if you can do that you can do anything and still feel good. And they do. They've murdered, they've raped, they've stolen, they've burned, they've threatened, they've extorted. And that's all they've achieved. There is no social reform except that everyone who can is leaving the cities and the schools to the mayors and their pet bullies who are rending and tearing the same unhappy people who were at the bottom when this all started and who can't get away. That's woke social reform - sleepwalking meanness to the weak. You bastards.

Erik,

ERYTHRITOL is what's used in my favorite coconut drink as sweetener, I tolerate it quite well. It's a very small amount.

I use xylitol in my nasal rinse and to gargle with each night. Don't know about teh other sugar alcohols,, but xylitol has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Incredibly sweet, and I'm careful not to swallow it.

Sugar alcohols are really sweet- but you failed to mention that if you're going to switch to them- start with small amounts and work your up. Elsewise results can be explosive. Reading various Amazon reviews and other horror stories about Haribo Gummie Bears is enlightening about the effects of too much sugar alcohol when your body isn't used to it.

Xylitol will kill a dog. Don't know about cats- dogs are specifically referenced in much literature. There are instructions on this vast internet thingie invented by Al Gore that say how to use different sugar alcohols to kill various insects and other small pests. Their natural sweetness will attract many that cannot properly digest them.

Purely artificial sweeteners like Aspartame pass through the body untouched. The little critters in your digestive system pretty much ignore them. Sugar alcohols? Oh yeah, they'll work on them. And generate gas quantities that put a meal of pickled eggs and beans to shame. Until the flora and faun in your digestive gets used to them.

I keep hoping that Martha will make a big push at some point in time. It did not happen against Sinema and I wonder if it will happen against Mark Kelly.

I will donate to her campaign. I expect that it will be a very close race and Kelly is extremely well funded.

A big question is whether McSally is a RINO or not. I have only lived here for two years and do not know the history that she has with Arizona conservatives and libertarians.
