"We support everyone’s First Amendment right for free speech and to gather and assemble in such a way. But what we saw today was not peaceful."

"It was not a peaceful demonstration at all, and criminal acts were occurring throughout the city, and many people were at risk." Said the Seattle police chief, Carmen Best, quoted in "Fires and Pepper Spray in Seattle as Police Protests Widen Across U.S." (NYT)(the same article linked in the last post).

Carrying signs such as “Feds Go Home” and shouting chants of “No justice, no peace,” some among the crowd of about 5,000 protesters stopped at the site of a future youth detention center and lit buildings there on fire. Some smashed windows of nearby businesses, ignited a fire in a coffee shop and blew an eight-inch hole through the wall of the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct building, the police said.

“At this point, we declared the event to be a riot, and several orders to disperse were given,” the Seattle police chief, Carmen Best, said at a news conference.

The police responded by firing flash grenades, showering protesters with pepper spray and abruptly rushing into crowds, knocking people to the ground. After a flash grenade left one woman with bloody injuries, police officers shoved people who had stopped to help her....

[Best] said a number of demonstrators... used violence. Some were tossing concrete blocks from a rooftop to the street below, she said. The coffee shop that was set afire had occupied apartments above it that had to be evacuated, she said....

Important to keep in mind about these riots--never in history have a people had less to complain about. This is a protest over nothing, a root for the sheet joy of rioting.

CNN and MS-Maddow et..al insist that leftwing antifa power rioting... is peaceful.

These "protests" have morphed from mostly white women to mostly white men. And I'm guessing young men who just want world chaos in the hope of some result for themselves other than having to work a shitty job and live in mom's basement. I felt that way once.

I think by now we all know that the Peaceful Demonstrators(tm) are there to give cover to the brick-tossers. There's not much point to these tantrums anymore - they are entertainment for people who are tired of binge-watching Acorn and Hulu. They'll continue in any city that encourages them. From afar, the riots are entertaining. I hope they don't come to my leafy part of suburbia, but if they do I suspect we'll just have to put up with it. I don't see elected officials anywhere having the spine to protect the citizenry.

It's hard on aimless boys to live in a stable country. No excitement or adventure. All of the "protestors" would benefit from a few years in a work camp. Making bike trails through the Cascades, for example.

This reminds me of those guys who named their kid Lucifer to get a rise out of people. The protesters want Trump to be re-elected so that they can continue their cosplay revolution. At least they are acting that way.

I was just reading a Hemingway story called “The Revolutionist” and it was noted that all of the people working on the trains in Italy were communists. Hemingway knew communists. They didn’t get their communist revolution through all of their mischief though, they got Mussolini, who “made the trains run on time."

"not a peaceful demonstration at all"

Not peaceful, also not a "demonstration," and not a "protest."

The continued use of those terms is MSM propaganda and fake news.

The Portland rioters are not just locals. The antifa goons come in from all over to join the fun. That guy last week who ambushed the federal marshals with a claw hammer as they exited the courthouse was from Texas. Hundreds of heavily armed blacks from Atlanta went into Louisville to put on an intimidating show yesterday.

Many of these clowns are Howards whose sole achievement in life has been to be white and have well-off daddies along with a shelf full of participation trophies.

Not sure if you’re serious about the work camp idea, but it has merit.

Is it just me or does Carmen Best, the Seattle Police chief, look like an overwhelmed substitute teacher who has lost control of the classroom? She has indulged these children for years before this flare up and as CHOP had spiraled out of control. Now no one listens to her, the Mayor, Antifa, BLM rioters etc.

How much of this violence is meth fueled? Portland is the meth capitol. The black bloc travels to Seattle. Meth strips out emotions, introduces paranoia, and violent thinking. The violence is a dopamine hit for them.

Better still, an America Foreign Legion. Gives these aholes a choice between a very long prison stretch or joining the legion. The legion could replace our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and every other shithole place our troops are in. Arm the legionaries with bolt action rifles and mules for transportation. No helos or mechanized armaments or air cover. Old School 19th century equipment. If they survive the twenty years, they get to come home. And if not, good riddance.

One longer term solution with a short term statement of fact. The Feds should declare that they will not rebuild any destroyed or damaged building in a city, but rather move it elsewhere.

I'm immensely enjoying the footage (apparently featured in the more pro-freedom blogosphere) of bubble-head "liberals" in riot-torn cities trying to "make nice" with the rioters only to be cursed at, pelted with garbage, etc.

End the Covid response regime of lockdown, masks, etc. Let businesses reopen, offices too. Open the schools, welcome all the students and teachers back. Declare the pandemic dealt with, from a public policy perspective. Perhaps many of these folks that are rioting will once again have better things to do.

I would order the removal of the federal courthouse to Pineville, Oregon.

That seems central to the state and not too awfully far from the population centers.
Let the lawyers, defendants, and plaintiffs fill up the Pineville-area motels.
Move the US Attorneys there too.

Hell, declare the port, the railways, and the airport to be overly dangerous.
Close them all pending an end to civil unrest.

Buses and highways are federally controlled too.
Shut them down.

Media has successfuly embargoed video and news of Portland riots so most Americans are unaware. Trump should show video in daily press briefings and force WH press corps to defend these "peaceful protests".

Coup 1 fizzled about with the Mueller investigation, and continues to make the news only as a potential threat to the coup crew, as documentation of their malfeasance, in investigations, in representations to the court and public, continues to dribble into the public sphere. If Trump can hold onto office, we may actually see the coup's architects and implementors punished to some extant. Coup 2 was the Ukraine impeachment hoax, whose cast overlaps significantly with the Russia hoaxers, made it to an impeachment trial in the senate, but left Trump empowered, if distracted, to face the COVID crisis.

Now coup 3: what do you call it? Trump let the camel's nose into the tent, and his opponents are doing all they can to use temporary emergency powers to transform America into a compliant, scared country. That includes launching "protests" that they hope will provoke a constitutional crisis, and allow them to attack Trump for overstepping the boundaries of his office. That seems to be the end game of this COVID/BLM driven coup: extend the lockdowns through the summer, channel the simmering rage into street action and invite a federal response that can be used in courts and court of public opinion to destroy Trump's presidency and increase the Dem's chances in November. It's that narrowcast, that shortsighted and that stupid, that is, assuming it does not work and will instead backfire, as seems highly likely. It smacks of desperation. Dangerous because desperate, but stupid and destructive and poorly conceived strategically.

Where's that handy Superhero when you could really use one? The riots, the craziness, the inept 'leadership', the ineffectiveness of the local police -- it's like the set-up to a Netflix series where the City is waiting for the Guy in the Mask to come and save the day. Escapist fantasy anticipates life in the weirdest ways.

Unfortunately, the only person showing up is Ted Wheeler or Durkan or DeBlasio or some other useless jerk, and their mission is to make sure that no one -- and certainly no guy in blue -- shows up to stop any of it.

Democracy has its consequences.

Seattle Police Chief letter to the City Council: Seattle Police Chief: If You Won't Let Us Defend Officers, We Won't Show Up

"SPD has confirmed with the City Attorney’s Office that the City Council ordinance banning the use of less lethal tools – including pepper spray – commonly used to disperse crowds that have turned violent, will go into effect this weekend as written. … For these reasons, SPD will have an adjusted deployment in response to any demonstrations this weekend. The Council legislation gives officers no ability to safely intercede to preserve property in the midst of a large, violent crowd."

What else can she do?

FWIW: "The Council regs are currently suspended because of a ruling by a Federal judge after an appeal from the DOJ."

Now the narrative du jour is that tear gas is prohibited under the Geneva Convention (true, in war, but not outlawed in this country). Perhaps those promoting the narrative prefer to let the rioters act without restrictions. Perhaps that's not a good idea.

Do Americans Get That Trump is Instituting Martial Law?

Subtext: "Trump Wants to Use Martial Law to Terrorize Americans — and Steal the Next Election ...brought to you by the folks who haven't accepted the results of the last election, and are working to steal the next one. Sure.

The claim: "What are they there for? “The suspension of civil law.” Trump’s shock troops are shredding the Constitution. Not in some abstract, theoretical, Ivy-League-Debate-Club kind of way — but with violence and brutality on the ground. They wear no badges, are unaccountable to anyone, have the power to abduct people off the streets for no rhyme or reason, and take them to God only knows where. The right to free speech? Assembly? Association? Privacy? Peaceful protest? To just walk down a street with your friends, carrying a banner? Bang — gone. They gassed the Mayor of a major American city."
