The NYT bows: "In an embarrassing about-face, The New York Times said Thursday that an opinion piece it ran by U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton... did not meet its standards."

"Cotton’s op-ed, titled 'Send in the Troops' and first posted online late Wednesday, caused a revolt among Times journalists, with some saying it endangered black employees. Some staff members called in sick Thursday in protest. The Times said in a statement that a 'rushed editorial process' led to publication of a piece that did not meet its standards.... Earlier Thursday, Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger and editorial page editor James Bennet defended its publication, saying they believed it was important to discuss controversial ideas in a public forum rather than keep them quiet. But, the Times reported that later, Bennet revealed that he had not read Cotton’s piece prior to its publication. 'As a result, we’re planning to examine both short term and long term changes' to its opinion pages including expanding its fact-checking operation and reducing the number of op-eds, which are opinion pieces written by outside contributors that it publishes, the Times said [in] its statement.... Also Thursday, the Philadelphia Inquirer apologized for a 'horribly wrong' decision to use the headline 'Buildings Matter, Too' on an article. Some 30 members of its 210-member editorial staff had called in sick Thursday following the mistake, which black staff members angrily condemned...."

AP reports.

Cotton reacted, saying the NYT is "surrendering to the mindless woke mob."

A particular problem with Cotton's piece was that it spoke of "left-wing radicals like antifa infiltrating protest marches to exploit Floyd’s death for their own anarchic purposes," but the NYT has not yet reported that the violent element was antifa. Its news story on June 1 had said "conservative commentators are asserting with little evidence that antifa, the far-left anti-fascism activist movement coordinates the riots and looting."

Whether Cotton was right or wrong about the facts, there is a problem with factual assertions in op-eds. I've written op-eds for the NYT, and it was with a very short deadline and I was trusted to get the facts in order. I don't know how much the Times intends to change its process, but I assume it wants and needs to have some distance between itself and the writers it brings in from the outside to give a hot take on a breaking controversial story.

ADDED: Why isn't there more reporting in the NYT about who's responsible for the violence and disorder accompanying the protests? A rational inference is that they are not pursuing it or they are suppressing what they have because it impugns the left. Please rebut that presumption if it's wrong, NYT.

Isn't it to progs' advantage to acknowledge that this is happening--since the obvious alternative is that local minorities are to blame for the mayhem? Or is shielding the far left from blame more important? If so, I call systemic racism.

And by the way, if "riots" are part of "protests," just an expression of righteous, understandable anger, the burning needed to make forests grow, then why take offense at attribution of responsibility at all?

It seems progs haven't quite settled on how to fit the riots into their narrative.

Temujin বলেছেন...

Seriously. Is anyone surprised at this? If you're honest, you had to know this was easily predictable. The NY Times has been a laughingstock for years now. At this point its fully integrated the latest generation of Journalists! They come with proper credentials (i.e. indoctrination) from the proper schools. They can't think clearly, they have no knowledge of economics, politics, or history, so clearly they are the ones to decide the direction of this paper. (Just ask Ben Rhodes, Obama's former National Security Advisor- he knew how lame they were and used it.)

Look- this is the same rag that got Pulitzer Prizes for covering up, nay- propping up Joseph Stalin while he was MURDERING 10 million or more in Russia and the Ukraine. This paper has gotten away with murder- literally. They were, and continue to be, a mess. Yet there are those who continue to regard it as 'the paper of record'. If you stop using that as your source, you'll find that there are actual news sources out there. NY Times has been turned over to teenaged thinkers dressed as adults. It's not going to be any prettier going forward. This is a news organization that needs to be ignored.

I’ve always understood that when a newspaper runs an op-ed by, say, Vladimir Putin or the Taliban or, Heaven forbid, a Republican U.S. Senator, that is in itself worthy of attention regardless of any factual claims.

Also, I haven’t seen exactly what it was that was so objectionable about this column. That leads me to believe that any factual error s worth either minor or didn’t happen.

“The civil war inside The New York Times between the (mostly young) wokes the (mostly 40+) liberals is the same one raging inside other publications and companies across the country. The dynamic is always the same.

The Old Guard lives by a set of principles we can broadly call civil libertarianism. They assumed they shared that worldview with the young people they hired who called themselves liberals and progressives. But it was an incorrect assumption.

The New Guard has a different worldview, one articulated best by @JonHaidt and @glukianoff. They call it "safetyism," in which the right of people to feel emotionally and psychologically safe trumps what were previously considered core liberal values, like free speech.

... Here's one way to think about what's at stake: The New York Times motto is "all the news that's fit to print." One group emphasizes the word "all." The other, the word "fit."

Suddenly self-declared anarchists aren’t legit enuf for NYT? Really? I wasn't going to read the Cotton Op-ed, although I thought it was interesting that someone who served a tour in Iraq and one in Afghanistan would think it was a good idea to have the military use those tactics in the United States.

After the shit storm it made me curious, so I read it. I think Cotton makes a few factual errors, one is the use of the term rioters which could use a bit of fleshing out and also the statement on Antifa.

I think the allegations that Antifa are behind the quite professional and organized burglaries of drugs, guns, luxury goods and easily fenced items is hilarious. It would be like saying that it's white supremacists behind them. There is little evidence that it is Antifa or other far leftwing or rightwing groups behind the mayhem. It makes much more sense to me that the looting is opportunistic and to the extent that it is organized, it's by professional criminal organizations.

I think it was good that the NYT published that Op-ed. The use of the military within the United States to control protests and keep the peace is an important argument to have. I just want to point out that a few weeks ago it was the Conservatives that were worried about it.

The obsession with Antifa by the right is over the top and telling. It displays the unwillingness to believe the many reports of right wing extremists groups who have been seen and some even arrested for larceny, arson etc.embedded in the protests. It displays an unwillingness to accept the fact that there are bad actors on the right. The right doesn’t want to be associated with such extreme groups, yet go out of their way to associate the left with a movement like Antifa. Guess what righties, you have some extremists on your side that make Antifa look like Boy Scouts.

These right wing groups under the umbrella of “Boogaloo” have been seen inciting and agitating in protests across the country, yet the right refuses to acknowledge this. All we’ve heard for months and years even, is Antifa, Antifa, Antifa. There are going to be more reports of the Boogaloo movement and associated groups as time and protests go on. Get used to hearing about them as much as we hear about the dreaded Antifa.

Inga বলেছেন...

Federal agents arrested the men, Stephen Parshall and Andrew Lynam, along with a third man, William Loomis, before they allegedly planned to disrupt a Black Lives Matter protest in Las Vegas. They face federal charges of conspiracy and possession of unregistered firearms and multiple terrorism-related state charges. Prosecutors say the men had planned to use firebombs and explosives to create chaos and panic that would lead to riots. The men are being held in the Clark County jail on $1 million bond each.

According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Nevada, all three, who are white and have U.S. military experience, “self-identified as part of the ‘boogaloo’ movement,” a disparate yet growing collection of extremists, including far-right militias, radical gun rights activists, white supremacists and neo-Nazis. As noted in the criminal complaint, “‘Boogaloo’ is a term used by extremists to signify a coming civil war and/or fall of civilization.”

The arrests and the details of the investigation leading up to it offer perhaps the most concrete evidence to date of the role extremists may be playing in some of the violence and destruction during otherwise peaceful protests over the past two weeks. And it sheds new light on how such groups or individuals have sought to exploit other events to advance their agenda of bringing down the U.S. government, leading, in some versions of the ideology, to the creation of a white “ethno-state.”

What exactly is the point of allowing op-eds in the first place?

I’m fairly certain it’s not to censor the dissenting voices that present the relevant facts in their argument according to your news judgment whims.

This is the bed the media has made for itself over the decades — cherry-picking what is news and what is not. Pretending true things do not exist, and gaslighting the news-reading public by repeatedly asserting things as facts that were never true in the first place. It’s not Tom Cotton’s problem, in reality, but nothing in the news business is in the remotely connected to reality.

And even when someone like Cotton states something that is clearly just untrue, and easily refuted because everyone knows it’s not true, well ... let people refute it in letters and other op-eds.

It doesn't seem like there are substantive debates anymore. The issue of whether the military should be called upon like Senator Cotton is advocating is an important argument. It's not an issue that cuts ideologically either, as there seems to be a great deal of reluctance to do that on the right and left.

The fact is that there are protests and people are really angry and most of the people that are out protesting are doing it because they saw the video of George Floyd dying, or the video of the 75 year old man pushed down by police in Rochester and the police doing nothing while he was bleeding out of his ear. They are angry and some of them are vandalizing, looting, and rioting. Criminals are taking advantage of the chaos.

Should the military be called upon now? Will that make it better or worse? I personally think that the police and National Guard are capable of handling this if they focus more on the criminals and less on the peaceful protesters. I'm willing to hear other suggestions.

“They seemed lost”, they don’t know the city of Milwaukee very well I guess. How many Antifa have been arrested in these protests? So far we are hearing about Boogaloos, but no Antifa being arrested.

Amidst Black Lives Matter protests around the city yesterday in Bay View, Downtown and the East Side, word circulated of another rally, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Humboldt Park—a meet up of the “Boogaloo Bois,” who also refer to themselves as the “Boojahideen.” The “boogaloo” is a term that refers to a civil war with the government. This local group declared they were not Alt Right or white supremacist but “a libertarian movement; pro-liberty, pro-2A (second amendment) and pro-individual rights.

In Milwaukee, protestors confronted the Boojahideen online, pointing out that their armed presence would be dangerous as it would give law enforcement an excuse to open fire on the crowd. At 7 p.m., Humboldt Park was quiet, with no signs of a rally. Concerns grew when protest organizer Frank Nitty said that he had received death threats, so speculation grew if the Boogaloos had something to do with it and were searching for him. An hour later a livestream appeared on Facebook that showed a group of about six Hawaiian shirt clad people wandering around the East Side (they seemed lost) carrying cases of water to give to protestors. Later, around 11 p.m., an apparently separate Booglaoo group appeared on North Avenue, where they stood on the corner near Von Trier’s flaunting firearms, and then seemed to briefly join in with the march.

It looks like everyone here, with the late addition by our resident liberal troll, see what is going on. The core of the rioting is well organized nationally, and the left, led by AntiFA and other Soros funded fellow travelers, have been engaged in planning and training probably since last summer. We all here (with the noted exception) saw it coming this summer. The only question was “when?”

The problem is that AntiFA, etc are the Dems’s new KKK, their shock troops. Much of the country knows it. The President has identified them as a terrorist group. That was based on hard evidence gathered by our premier law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Trump didn’t make it up. Neither did Cotton. It would be very bad optics if the Dems were tied closely in the minds of the public with the terrorism, firebombing, and now even cold blooded murder being practiced by their militant arm, esp in an election year.

The new, younger, breed at the NYT, see their job not as informing the public of what is happening around them, but rather with furthering a progressive narrative. Thus, their metric is not truth or falseness, but rather usefulness to the cause. If that sounds familiar, it is because it isn’t new. This sort of journalism was practiced by the Nazis and the Soviets, and is currently practiced maybe even more aggressively by the ChiComs. If it was useful to their benefactors, it was true. If it wasn’t useful, it was treated as false, or, in dire emergencies, like this, where the evidence was overwhelming, it was treated as yet unproven. Instapundit keeps showing, on occasion that photograph of Stalin with a group of his toadies walking along, and then a later version of that photo with the person to his left edited out of the photo, as if he had never existed or been close to Stalin. That is what is going on here. And Cotton had rudely pulled the curtain aside, exposing the reality of the organization behind the violence, anarchism, and, now, murder, and that the progressive interests that they were shilling for, was behind it.

Think of the younger generation at the NYT as the ones doing the programming of the populace at the beginning of the Matrix that kept almost everyone complacent and happy. Their job is to program and maintain the one true narrative (until, as in Stalin’s time, the narrative has to change and be corrected, because of personnel changes, etc). As with Stalin and Hitler, some are true believers, while some are cynically manipulators.

We all know this is happening right now. Just some struggle to maintain their illusions.

Senator Cotton's account of the editorial vetting process sounds like it was pretty thoroughly fact-checked and edited by the NYT staff: The Inside Story of the Tom Cotton Editorial

More evidence, and it's not boogaloo.

Sorry, Inga. No I'm not.

Well said, Bruce Hayden, as always.

that photo with the person to his left edited out of the photo, as if he had never existed or been close to Stalin.

If I'm not mistaken, that was Stalin's own son.

Indeed you don’t struggle to maintain your illusions about the extent of Antifa involvement.

I've avoided digging into the comical assertions about Buggaloo Bois so far, but Inga's link brings me up to speed on the danger: some anonymous people said some mean things online and then 6 lost, white guys handed out water to protesters in Milwaukee. Oh noooooooos! Right-wing revolution in progress!

Antifa is to the Democrats what the IRA was to Sinn Fein. Of course, their presence will go unreported by the leftmediaswine!

I think Inga has figured out that Putin ordered Carter Page, Michael Flynn and George Papadopolous to organize the Boogaloo Bois and start all this rioting.

Maybe Bob Mueller should investigate because we still don't know what Mueller knows.

The FBI reports that boogaloos in Hawaiian shirts were planning to blow up the Federal courthouse in Richmond, VA. Oh, no, wait, my bad, it's Inga's homies who were doing that!

"The FBI was notified of the marking one day after being notified by an officer of another law enforcement agency that unidentified individuals “believed to be members, or associates, of a local anarchist/ANTIFA group,” were “overheard discussing burning down the Richmond courthouse,” according to the report.

The Richmond Police Department said it seized fire accelerants along with multiple handguns, gas masks and sets of ballistic body armor after arresting seven individuals early Wednesday morning. It’s unclear if those individuals are connected to the earlier vandalism of the Richmond courthouse."

Too bad Inga is about 50 years too old to go do the radical chic Patty Hearst thing and fight with her radical darlings. She'd break a hip if she tried rioting now. But her heart's with them!

Hey Inga,
How about you learn how to provide a link without including the excerpt. It's really annoying to read your wisdom presented that way.

As I said yesterday, these riots can be stopped by the government in an orderly fashion, or by the citizenry in a not-so-orderly fashion.

Choose wisely, leftists. Or not. But they will end.

There is little evidence that it is Antifa or other far leftwing or rightwing groups behind the mayhem.

It's overstated, but there is simply no other way to describe it to you, Lance.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

Here in Salt Lake City, the local cops did some smart police work. We've only had one riot, last saturday. The next day, the cops arrested two men on their way to the protest. Those men had several loaded weapons, and when they searched their homes they found lots more.

Why did they arrest these men? They were making direct and specific threats to go kill cops at the protest that night. They were spouting off all the stuff Inga loves to say about black lives only mattering and the evils of having a police force to prevent looting.

Those are the kinds of people Inga loves, loves, loves.

Story in the Deseret News.

Antifa maims cops. Regular dirtbag bottom-dwellers and BLM thugs shoot them. Old white lady leftists sneeringly celebrate dead cops and protect the guilty. A stray brick might teach some manners.

Boogaloo is just the media scapegoat - so they don't have to talk about the much larger terrorist organization that is leftwing Antifa.

Hawaiian shirts seem to be a very poor choice of camouflage if you are planning to start a riot.

"A particular problem with Cotton's piece was that it said "left-wing radicals like antifa infiltrating protest marches to exploit Floyd’s death for their own anarchic purposes," but the NYT has not yet reported that the violent element was antifa."

So the "problem" with Cotton's piece was that he reported facts that the Times wanted suppressed.

Ok.

"Whether Cotton was right or wrong about the facts, there is a problem with factual assertions in op-eds. I've written op-eds for the NYT, and it was with a very short deadline and I was trusted to get the facts in order."

But Cotton DID get his facts in order, and utterly correct.

The good thing about being a conservative these days is that time proves us right about 99% of the time.

The bad news about being Inga is that the opposite is true about her. She still hasn't declared here (to my knowledge) whether she still believes that Trump or anyone associated with him colluded with the Russians to steal the 2016 election.

But at least she seems to have moved past her gleeful reporting of everyone who died from the Corona virus. At least for now.

Cotton, who speaks for the deplorable mob gets bent by the success of the woke mob.

Gee, Howard, I seem to be suffering from total memory failure here. Please help me!

I can't remember any of the riots thrown by the "deplorable mob". you know, the ones where tehy burned down businesses, killed police officers, killed peaceful bystanders, etc. I'm sure, from your description, that there must have been hundreds of them, but I can't remember any at all.

So, when and where were they all?

The obsession with Antifa by the right is over the top and telling. It displays the unwillingness to believe the many reports of right wing extremists groups who have been seen

"We saw 4 people at a riot of 500 people, where the massive power of those 4 white supremacists caused the riot!"

Only a actual white supremacists would think that whites had such a massive mind control power over blacks. Stop being such a bigot, Inga!

some even arrested for larceny, arson etc.embedded in the protests.

"Some". The weasel word of the knowingly dishonest.

So Inga, how many is "some"? Give us a number, backed up with links to credible reports of their arrests. And we'll compare that "some" to the actual numbers of Antifa goons who've been arrested and charged

I was an editorial board member, editorial writer and op-ed columnist for the San Jose Mercury News for 22 years. I can't imagine the editorial page editor not reading a column by a U.S. senator. Cotton's staff told Rich Lowrey at the National Review that they went back and forth three times with New York Times editors discussing changes to the column, including factual issues, before it was approved.

The decision to accept fewer op-ed columns by outsiders is very unfortunate. It locks the Times into its own groupthink. Capitulating to staff members who can't handle a disagreeable opinion is a huge mistake.

I'm puzzled about the use of "unsafe." Do they mean "makes me feel bad?" Or do they think they are more likely to be shot or otherwise assaulted by National Guardsmen than by police or rioters? "Unsafe" has been used so broadly of late that it's lost its meaning.

Finally, there's lots of evidence of antifa infiltration of protests, as Cotton wrote. It's much less clear that any group is coordinating or controlling the violence. During the "long hot summer" of 1967, there were 159 race riots across the country, says Wikipedia.

I thought the usage was pretty clear. The people saying it believe that all NYT "black" staffers are criminal thugs who spend their days looting, burning, and otherwise destroying private black-owned businesses.

I thought it was a bit harsh and bigoted of the NYT people to say that about their co-workers. But "white progressives are a bunch of racists" is not a surprising situation
