"'Why are you not burying him?': Trump allies fret over rising Biden threat/Outside advisers and donors want the Trump campaign to unleash more resources quickly to dent Biden’s strength in the polls."

A headline at Politico. From the text:
“Take the gloves off and put him away,” said one Republican close to the White House. “If you have the cash advantage and you have all of June, why are you not burying him?”
I think the answer is obvious, but I will let you go first.

Four thoughts:

1 - hello? we're in the middle of a human-caused disaster of epic proportions. Trump is president. Biden who?

2 - bothering with the total non-entity that is Biden gives credence to his candidacy. Top dog responding to runty runt elevates runty runt's position

3 - if Trump destroys Biden now, the Democrats might be disposed to dump him. Trump WANTS to run against Biden.

4 - team Trump has their their internal polls and they're so good there's just no need to do anything

YoungHegelian said...

This isn't a polling thing or something that's going to going to be solved by clever marketing.

About 47% of the country will never, ever, vote for Slo-Joe Biden. About 47% will never, ever, vote for the Evil Cheeto. It's that 6% in the middle that's going to flip it one way or the other.

That 6% right now has had their world turned upside down. If they see their lives get appreciably better & "normality" more or less returns, Trump will win. If their lives go even more to shit, then Slo-Joe has a chance as maybe a better way forward through the darkness.

The 6% is looking for results. They're looking for money in their pocket & beef being affordable again.** What they're looking for no political consultant can sell them.

** I don't know what it's like where you guys are, but here in the DC suburbs, the price of beef is just outrageous. Pork & chicken went up, but even ground beef is at luxury prices.

1. Are the polls correct? If they are, how and why did they suddenly become accurate?
2. Don't spend media dollars when they are ineffective. There is too much other competing noise media right now. Besides, the way the COVID crunch has played out, Trump is already structurally positioned to let the blue state's kill themselves at the expense of his target voters, without having to spend an extra dime.

I hate their use of anonymous "sources". Why hide the identity of "one Republican close to the White House"? That person's not going to get into trouble for saying this.

It used to be, back around Watergate, that anonymous sourcing had to be approved by the editor. There was a serious discussion in journalism about the ethics of it.

Frankly, we shouldn't even call it "journalism" anymore. It's too high-falutin' a word. They're reporters. Or scum. Whichever you prefer.

The problem is not that Biden is OK in the polls. (RCP average = 47.7%)

- The entire Dem bench is junk. Trump can handle whatever they have or think they have. Who they going to draft? Opra? M. Obama? They got nothing. All the fighting is over the VP slot, that is who Trump is actually running against.

Right now my personal theory is:

* Biden nominates someone who checks off enough grievance boxes: Harris
* Biden then steps down due to health
* Bernie Bros will throw a tantrum, but the DNC will hold firm
* Harris nominates Buttigieg as running mate (more grievance boxes checked off)

Pretty much the perfect solution for the DNC. You marginalize the Bernie Bros, you get a woman on the top of the ticket again, and you also get a gay marriage thrown in as a bonus. Plus, the Dems only win when they nominate young, fresh faces. A Harris / Buttigieg ticket fills the bill.

When the press asked their vicious questions, to just deflect and say, Some of us are trying to deal with the pandemic, and we don't have time right now for this vicious nonsense: next question!

I haven't yet read the other comments, but the obvious answer is that Biden is only the presumptive Democrat nominee for president. He has not clinched enough delegates yet to actually be the nominee, even though the other Democrat candidates have suspended their campaigns. Biden is a candidate with more weaknesses than strength, and there is still time for Democrat buyers' remorse to come to the fore at the Democrat convention if it looks like Biden is a sure loser. Once Biden is officially the candidate after the convention is over, THAT is the time to hit Biden with all of the various commercials that will make Biden an impossible choice for anyone who isn't a yellow dog Democrat.

Biden must be buried but not until late October. We saw how fast the media jumped in and saved him in primary. Bury him now and he’ll either make an awesome come back or you’ll take him out too soon and end up with a completely different and potentially stronger opponent.

Bruce Hayden said...

Tweaking Ann’s post a little:

“Other factors not necessarily irrelevant, but you've got to let the Democrats lose their opportunity to EASILY swap out Biden for somebody else.”

A lot of us don’t believe that China Joe Biden can be dragged up the driveway and through the front doors of the White House. But the later they make the swap, the better probably for Trump and the Republicans. The hope, I think, is that they don’t try the switch until after their convention, because, as we saw with Torricelli, it’s going to take some cheating to pull it off. And that probably isn’t going to look pretty. Moreover, the longer they wait to do it, the less time they will have to sell their new candidate, and sell the country why they should vote for her, instead of Trump. Because, absent that, mostly what they would have is the anti-Trump vote, and those voters are not as enthusiastic voters as those voting for a candidate.

Leland said...

I'm late, but I see my thinking aligns with the accepted answer. Then again, I posted long ago on the Biden allegations that it is a win/win that the #MeToo movement has abandoned its purpose and for the sake of assuring Biden gets the nomination. I thought Althouse might have a tag related to her previous post about Trump's adversaries getting tired of giving Trump advise.

MadisonMan said...

I think it also worth Trump staying silent so ordinary people can see how much the Press is covering up for Biden. Somehow these verbal miscues aren't lies as they would be if Trump said them, and they're not catalogued.

stutefish said...

The decider isn't whether Trump attacks Biden. It's whether swing voters are mad at Trump about pandemic outcomes.

If, in November -
- voters generally feel like things are okay
- and they tend to blame whatever failures on their local governments
Then nothing else matters. Trump wins.

The only way Trump loses this election is if people feel like things are crappy in November, and they blame the feds.

Trump is smart to encourage local governments to make their own decisions, rather than make his administration responsible for all the outcomes all day every day. He's smart to let Biden marinate in his own powerlessness to change that national conversation in any meaningful way.

And Trump knows that he's already lost the blue states anyway. It's not like any federal policy he did put forward would garner him any votes in New York. Those voters have made up their minds.

This is purely about how swing voters feel about their own situation in November.

Ron Winkleheimer said...

“** I don't know what it's like where you guys are, but here in the DC suburbs, the price of beef is just outrageous. Pork & chicken went up, but even ground beef is at luxury prices”

Now there’s your problem. We picked up steak at a local restaurant last week. It was decent by our standards, which are no doubt higher than in much the country. Prices haven’t really gone up since last year. But we still have a freezer full of beef from a cow raised on a farm about 10 miles west of here. That is part of the deal my partner’s ex makes every year for splitting the proceeds from the sale of his hay and alfalfa. Need to work it down so that there will be room in the freezer for when the next one is butchered. Our problem is that none of us are eating nearly as much beef as we used to.

Needless to say, places like DC are going to be at the end of a long food distribution chain. That means that cities like that, and worse, ones like NYC, will almost always feel the brunt of food shortages the worst.

Not reading the comments first, I will take a stab at what "obvious" is:

(1) Biden won't be the nominee, and I think the Trump Campaign knows this, and;
(2) if Biden can be damaged by such an onslaught, then it will be just as effective in September and October, and almost certainly more so.

My main takeaway from this "news" article is this- it was written by people wanting to buttress the idea that Biden is strong in the polls and Trump is weak in the polls. It is trying to create a desired reality.

D.D. Driver said...

If you can answer the question: why didn't the Dems release the Grab Em By P%$$y tape before the Republican convention you know the answer why Trump hasn't started attacking yet.

Jerry said...

You can tell me that Biden's winning, but I'd want to see the actual polling - specifically the questions asked, the demographic breakdown on who's been polled, and where.

And when.

To be honest, Biden seems to be deteriorating quickly. Maybe he's seen as a 'winner' by the folks who are being paid big bucks by his campaign to figure out whether he can win or not - but they may just be getting the money while it's there. Once he actually starts to get out and be seen (because he can't hide in his basement forever) then it'll be apparent fast whether he's even going to make it through the campaign.

And doing a last-minute bait and switch at the convention would REALLY go well, no matter who they put in. There's simply not been time and visibility for anyone to gain traction after the rigging that went on in '16 to get Hil to the top of the ticket, and now Slo-Joe.

The Gerontocracy at the top of the DNC couldn't resist one last grab at the gold ring. And all it'll cost them is the Party itself.

Something like that hasn't happened since 1872, when Horace Greeley died after election day and the electors went for a variety of different candidates. In 1912, when Taft's running mate died before election day, the party designated his replacement and the electors went along with that, but Taft only won 8 electoral votes from the most Republican states in the country. Last time, when you'd sort of expect electors to stick with the party choice, electors in Texas, Hawaii and Washington bolted. Electors in Minnesota, Colorado and Maine tried to, but they were barred from doing so. If Biden wins and the party can pick somebody to replace him, enough the electors will remain loyal to put the party's choice in the White House. If Biden loses, more of them will scatter.

Another factor is that there's a new sense of optimism about the virus and the economy. The country is beginning to open up in some places, successfully even. The stock market has regained a lot of lost ground in a hurry. Some people are getting their old jobs back.

If things keep getting better, Trump doesn't have to do anything special. Events will bury whoever his opponent is.

Punxatawney Joe is buried in his groundhog burrow just now. He will ultimately come out of the burrow--after the Democrat conventin, and then Trump and his campaign can hit him hard. In the meantime Slow Joe grows more senile and gaffe prone. It's not going to take five and a half months of hard hitting oppo ads to finish dear old Joe's campaign. Save your powder for a two month blitz in September and October. Meanwhile as Joe runs his mouth (but not his brain) more fodder for campaign ads will be produced by Joe.

I think the answer is obvious

The answer is obvious. You are a sucker for this BS media tactic of wanting to portray the people around Trump as not really liking or trusting him.

Kissinger replied, "We have already established that fact, Madame. We are just dickering over the price".

That was attributed to Lord Beaverbrook, and probably popularized by Churchill. I know this because if Kissinger was really the one asking the question, the answer would have been yes- no haggling needed.

I assume the troll has some kind of mind control or something. Maybe he's just that alpha. Who knows.

If I were Biden, I would hire a food taster, and I wouldn't let that DNC camera crew, all of whom seem to have bad coughs, into the basement. Same thing with Bernie. Old guys can decline quite fast; you turn around that they are gone.

People always say location is everything.

It's not. Timing is everything.

Temujin said...

It's all been said previously. Trump has to string this out as long as he can until the Dems are backed into a corner and have to stick with Biden. Timing will be crucial for the Dems, as well as for Trump. But for now, Trump is doing exactly what he should be doing.

In a similar vein, Churchill's response to Lady Astor (the Nancy Pelosi of the day) was priceless.

Imagine Pelosi telling Trump that "If I were your wife, I would poison your tea". The Churchillian response is (of course), "Madame, if I were your husband, I would drink it".

“you've got to let the Democrats lose their opportunity to swap out Biden for somebody else.”

A lot of folks didn’t think a clown could win. Though I was not one of those folks.

Anywho, Althouse tells us that the DJT folks could destroy Biden with their secret (hence Althouse doesn’t know it) info that they’re not jabbering about, but they’re holding this secret (hence Althouse doesn’t know it) info for now.

Got it.

About 96% of Republicans and all conservatives support Trump.
How silly."

Polls are even more fun when they oversample CA and NY along with polling "adults" on top of D+8.

Trump is very strategic on where, when, and how he spends money.

Typical GOP consultants spend money like drunken sailers. This is why so many of the GOP consultants Hate Trump.

I wonder what his campaign is focused on currently?

A big selling point in 2016 was jabber about, supposedly, not using big-dough, swamp influencers’ cash. Then the line was re self-funding being a big deal. And stuff about not wasting dough.

So is so-called strategic spender DJT careful re not-his-dough spending?

Ann, Ann, Ann The Dems can nominate Joe, run the campaign out to the last week and replace him. We all know the rules don’t apply to Democrats.

No, actually, they can't.

You know all those mail in ballots that the Democrats want? They're print 2 months or more before the election.

All those people voting early in person, or by mail? They're voting for "Joe Biden and X". You change the Democrat candidate, then at best for the Democrats, every single one of those people needs to vote over again. At worst their vote are in, they're for Biden, and they're out of luck

Every State has its own ballot rules. Think the WI Supreme Court is going to let Evers play games a week or two before the election?

The Democrats have, maybe, until early September to pull Biden. After that it will be too late. And it's entirely their fault that that is so

These numbers are not symmetrical. The Dem number probably is about 47%, but the Rep number is more like 40%. Patronage works.

Patronage works, when you're actually paying the people off

The Democrats have not been paying off black voters. Trump, OTOH, has been running an economy that is finally giving them both jobs, and raises.

The Dems big fear is that this year patronage won't work. See "if you're thinking about voting for Trump, you're not black"

The previous commenters are correct in saying that Biden is not the candidate yet. To spend down the war chest against a "wanna be" and then be underfunded for the main event is the political equivalent of being "rope-a-doped."

Plus, anything Trump says against SloJoe can be used in support of the replacement candidate. Joe's too old? Replace him with someone younger and fresher (Buttigieg maybe), and you basically have close to a Trump endorsement! Joe's too corrupt? Buttigieg again for the win! Joe's demented? Surely there is some democrat somewhere who would not be...

This one

The one where, stopping at the end of last year, before the Democrats used the Wuhan Flu to destroy the economy, the people in the lower income brackets were actually getting more of a percentage raise than people in the upper income brackets. Where black unemployment was the lowest it had ever been measured in the US. Where cutting down on illegal aliens getting into the US was helping poor Americans, just as anyone sane would know it would

What world are you in?

In the next couple of days, (already happening) George Floyds death will be ALL Donald Trumps fault....24/7 for the next month on CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, and PBS (amongst others). This will get their base nice and inflamed and ready to fight and tear down the country.

The election is in November.

You can't bury a Democrat now. Not possible. Biden could be dead and the news media would work tirelessly to keep him reasonably close in the polls. Unless the Dems decided to replace him.

If Trump somehow managed to damage him enough, the Dems would replace him on the ticket. So leave him alone. Let him damage himself for a couple more months.
