"We want to finish this war. We have to get back to work. We have to open our country again. We have to open our country again."

"We don’t want to be doing this for months and months and months. We’re going to open our country again. This country wasn’t meant for this fewer, fewer, but we have to open our country again. I just spoke with the commissioners, leaders of, I would say virtually all of the sports leagues. Rob Manfred, Commissioner of Baseball, Major League Baseball, Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League, Adam Silver, Commissioner of the National Basketball Association, Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the National Hockey League, Jay Monaghan, Commissioner of the PGA Tour, Cathy Engelbert, Commissioner of the Women’s National Basketball Association. Dana White, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Vince McMan, President of the WWE, Don Garber, Commissioner of Major League Soccer, Steve Phelps, President of NASCAR, Michael Wahn, Commissioner of the LPGA, Roger Penske, founder and Chairman Penske Corp and Drew Fleming, President of the Breeders’ Cup, and there were a couple of others on and these are all the great leaders of sport and they want to get back, they got to get back. They can’t do this. The sports weren’t designed for it. The whole concept of our nation wasn’t designed for, we’re going to have to get back. We want to get back soon. Very soon."

Said Donald Trump, at yesterday's Task Force press briefing. Transcript here.

I'm interested in this "whole concept" of what "our nation" — and sports — were "designed for." The virus has its own designs, and we need to design strategies to deal with it. What does it matter if the nation — and sports — weren't designed around what would be needed to win a war with a virus?

It's just rhetoric, Trump rhetoric. He riffs. It comes straight from his mind. I have a higher tolerance — and even an appreciation — for it than most people who — like me — didn't vote for him. I'd say, here, he's just crying out that he doesn't like having to do what we need to do. We want out! We want to work! We want to watch baseball! We want to live! He's feeling that at you. It doesn't mean we get back to doing America As It Was Designed To Be anytime soon. It's just: I know you want it. I'm going to get you back there as soon as I can but I'm sorry it's not yet.

ADDED: Another gem from that transcript:
I want to thank the American people, most of all for the selfless sacrifices that they’re making for our nation. I know it’s not pleasant. Although some people have said they’ve gotten to know their family better and they love their family more than ever, and that’s a beautiful thing. They’ve actually gotten to know them. They’re in the same house with their family for a long time. I guess it can also work the other way perhaps, but we don’t want to talk about that.
I like: "They’ve actually gotten to know them."

I sure wish people commenting here would spend less time on the care, well-being and feeding of Howard the Troll.

@Not Sure & @CStanley,

You both have good points to make deserving of a response. Hard for me to do by phone, need my Laptop, gimme an hour or 2, when I get home.

In the interim, this guy is doing outstanding work. .

Cheers.

"Does anyone believe that we currently have 100 X the number of cases as those that have been identified through testing?"

Yes.

Eventually these decisions should, for practical and political reasons, be turned over to the states with some measure of coordination.

But politicians are cowards. And their greatest fear is to NOT be re-elected.

What Governor has the guts to say,"Go forth"?

Wrong. You would not need 32 million cases to make that point.

The current CFR based on the reported numbers is 2.8%. The reported CFR for H1N1 in 2009 (according to the comment I was responding to, which I believe quoted CDC stats) was 0.03%.

Now, I don’t believe that the actual CFR for SARS-2 is 2.8%. There almost certainly are cases that are not being counted. But the only way to make the denominator of the fraction (deaths/cases) big enough to make it close to 0.03% is to multiply the number of cases by 100. So yes, that would mean that to date there would be 32 million people in the US infected with this virus.

If I’m wrong please explain why.

One of the ways that he defines a black swan event is that no one is able to predict its coming, but once it has arrived, a narrative is constructed that shows that the event was inevitable.

I think the same goes for what eventually emerges as the right response.

The question is how much collateral damage are we willing to tolerate and for how long? The virus from from Wuhan will be with us until there is sufficient innate, acquired, and inoculated immunity, it self-aborts, or gets bored.

Is WAR a good metaphor from American History perspective?

No Gaia's, Her Choice, is analogous to Pro-Choice, her choice, sort of, kind of. The latter is responsible for around 700 thousand excess, elective deaths annually in America alone under the planned parenthood protocol.

Mayor Marty Walsh (Mahtee), no relation, has issued a recommended curfew (not sure what that means, precisely) on the good people of Boston, MA. He asks that they not go outside for any reason at any time other than grocery shopping, and when they do they should wear a mask. He suggests that if they need or desire exercise they should get it within their home. SMH.

Hey! MA reports that they have reduced the number of tests and that there has been a reduction in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases! How about we stop testing altogether and drive the number of confirmed cases to zero? Flatten the curve.

If I had a dollar for every time our hostess has underlined that she didn't vote for Trump, I'd be --what? --as rich as Croesus.

True, Molly, but you've got to give her credit for alerting us to the 'racism' involved in virtually every issue. ;-)

Thank you for your contribution, Howie.

"In Internet slang, a troll is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the Internet to distract and sow discord by posting inflammatory and digressive,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses[2] and normalizing tangential discussion,[3] whether for the troll's amusement or a specific gain."

Heck of a thing to be proud of, Howard. Who have you reeled in?

Achilles- if the virus has been here since last year (I think that’s your theory?) then why is it suddenly spiking in NYC and NOLA?

This was clearly spreading widely in the US in January.

They were killing doctors in China in November and December.

The spike you are seeing now takes months to build and if you actually look at the math the starting N was much larger than 10000 or 20000 people. We had hundreds of thousands fly in from China in December/January. The asymptomatic rate for this virus has been notably high.

It is in every single state. It is in Alaska for fucks sake.

They are hiding the truth because when it comes out no decent human being can do anything but demand the death of Xi Jianping and the Chicom government.

A million deaths are not enough for these people.
