"Mick Mulvaney... blamed the media for exaggerating the seriousness of coronavirus because 'they think this will bring down the president, that’s what this is all about.'"

The NYT reports on remarks by the acting White House chief of staff at the Conservative Political Action Conference today.
Mr. Mulvaney also criticized the news media for generally not wanting to portray Mr. Trump in a positive light. But he chose a bizarre example, claiming it refuses to cover what he described as Mr. Trump’s loving relationship with his 13-year-old son, Barron.... “[T]he press would never show you that because it doesn’t fit that image of him, the press wants him to be this terrible monster.”

Mr. Mulvaney’s decision to discuss Barron Trump was curious, especially when Melania Trump, the first lady, and senior White House officials have gone to great lengths to make sure he enjoys the privacy afforded to other children of presidents growing up in the uncomfortable spotlight of the White House....

Mr. Mulvaney... also asserted that Mr. Trump did not sleep on the overnight plane trip home from India or during the day before his news conference on coronavirus Wednesday night....

The US has a population of 330 Million. According to the CDC (via this right-wing news site), we have the following stats for 2017-2018 in the US:

1. 45 Million flu cases
2. 810,000 hospitalizations for the flu
3. 61,000 deaths from the flu

This needs to be emphasized.

Roughly 1000 people died from the flu this week in the US based on these numbers.

The democrats don't care about them. They only care about what they can use to attack Trump.

"Trumpvirus" is going to backfire on these pieces of shit. The masks are off.

“ Have a look at the most recent graphs showing the growth of the infections. Flattening”

Or lying. We don’t really know. There are several countries whose statistics are suspect. China, of course, has been lying since Day 1. They may be doing what the MSM pollsters do every major election, which is catching their polls up to reality, as the election nears, so that they don’t look like the Dem operatives that they actually are. China is already suffering horribly - not so much directly from the disease, but rather economically, as company after company is removing them from their supply chains, or at least augmenting them with output from other countries.

We know close to nothing about what is happening in China’s next door neighbor, North Korea. While North Korea has hundreds of thousands Tripp’s between them and their neighbor to the south, their border with China is much more porous. South Korea should get honorable mention here too, with a Coronavirus doomsday cult apparently intentionally spreading the disease.

And then there is the Islamic Republic of Iran. While Saudi Arabia has effectively banned the annual Hajj to Mecca this year, the Iranians haven’t done much in that direction for pilgrimages to their holy sites, such as Qom, in the province next to Tehran. They are just now getting around to cancelling weekly prayers where masses of the faithful kneel closely together listening to sermons. Of course, this may not be as bad as it would have been 40 years ago, when most Muslims there attended services. Now, Muslim religious observance is now supposedly in the single digits. Still, with a prominent cleric telling the people to stick essential oils up their anuses, instead of observing modern health safety practices, because that was what their Prophet commanded of them 1300 years ago, the prognosis isn’t great. Esp in a country run by clerics. One alarming fact is that so many of the top tier of their government is infected, including at least one death. Could that be an indication that the number of infected, and recorded deaths, are significantly higher than reported? Could this be the event that finally ends up bringing their increasingly unpopular regime down? (Which is probably part of why they seem to be lying through their teeth so blatantly).

Big Mike said...

The CDC website is presenting alarming information about this virus, when nobody has a clue about how it spreads, let alone how dangerous it really is. My guess is that infected people are being significantly under-counted, so the death rate is lower than being reported.

Which is silly. The human race has been dealing with Corona viruses since forever. As I understand it, most common colds are due to Corona viruses, and ditto SARS. and MERS. It’s almost certainly spread the same way — coughing and sneezing. Unfortunately (and I will defer to healthcare professionals on this) as we all know getting a cold does not confer immunity from future common colds.

“ Think about it. Who gets tested for the virus? Generally it's going to be people who show up to hospitals and clinics with symptoms that are severe enough that they need treatment. It's possible, and probably likely, that there's been a large population of people in China whose symptoms were either pretty mild or just not severe enough to justify a vist to a hospital or health clinic. They may even have suspected that they have or had the virus and just stayed home, self quarantining.”

Making this worse, a lot of Chinese were viewing quarantine as effectively a death sentence. They weren’t going anywhere near the medical or political authorities with anything less than full on symptoms because they believed that that meant that they would die alone amidst strangers, instead of with their families, or maybe could eve recover through application of more traditional medicines.

My operating hypothesis is that COVID-19 made its way to Iran via China - Iran gov't contacts.

Which would mean those people were the first ones hit, rather than follow on "victims".

Which would be good news for Iran on multiple fronts. The bad guys and their minions get sick, but it's not (yet) widespread to teh people in general.

The coughing may be how it primarily spreads, but not just by inhaling the viri expelled by infectious individuals, but also through contact with surfaces that have been coughed on, or transfer from other such surfaces. Then typically picking it up on their hands, and either contaminating other surfaces, or near mucus glans, in the eyes, nose, etc. Apparently even med students, who should know better, cannot prevent themselves from rubbing their eyes, picking their noses, etc. The medical doctors here can probably explain this better. But, yes, transmission doesn’t seem that different from common cold and flu - though the virus may be a bit hardier on surfaces outside the body.

One interesting thing about COVID-19 is that it appears to start in the lower lungs, instead of in the upper lungs, where most respiratory viruses seem to start. This means that there were apparently a lot of false negatives early on, because the X-Ray machines being used didn’t pick lower lung infections, and only did so when the disease progressed into the upper lungs. Detecting the disease in the lower lungs apparently requires an MRI machine, which apparently costs a lot more. This isn’t a problem in the US, but MRIs are not nearly as ubiquitous in many poorer countries around the world. I would be curious if there were any in Iran, where the country’s leaders seem to prefer the medicine taught in the Quran to modern medicine.

The stock market runs on two emotions: fear and greed. Fear always provokes a greater response than greed which is more measured.

I believe that there are three main fears driving down the market:

1. China and/or SE Asian economies collapsing causing a chain reaction.

2. Bernie's ascendancy.in the Democrat party. Whomever the candidate is has a nearly 50-50 chance to beat Trump.

3. The market is overvalued and due for correction.

So we are talking about a storm that is not perfect, but expected.

Do not panic. Do not take off your shoes.

Big Mike, I am no expert on face masks. I wore them in the operating room for years but don't know much about their use in this disease.

As for protecting your wife, that is tough. All I could suggest is minimizing contact until you are recovered.

As for coughs, etc, this virus also has a fecal-oral spread potential. Hand washing is the main protection, and avoiding San Francisco of course.

I agree that there are many cases of infection that are unknown because they are mild. I expect this to be prominent among young people and children who seem least affected. Also smoking and chronic lung troubles may be making this worse in China as smoking and air pollution are major factors.

The use of CT scans for diagnosis may be overstating the incidence, CT not MRI still seems to be the preferred method for diagnosis.

BAG: So I reckon my question is this: if we already have LARGE NUMBERS of flu cases (45 Million) and flu deaths (61,000) in the US, why the freak-out over SMALL NUMBERS of flu cases and flu deaths from the Corona ChiCom Virus, that apparently hasn't yet shown up here?

Putting aside the tendentious "freak-out" (who's "freaking out"?), it's not absolute numbers that are the cause for concern right now. The annual morbidity and mortality from flu, U.S and global, tend to stay in a "standard" range - so, business as usual. People die, it's what we do. We're set up to handle normal numbers of illness and death from familiar infectious diseases.

But we don't know beforehand how an infectious disease showing novel features (and it's not called novel coronavirus for nothing) is going to behave. Public health officials are looking at a lot more than the number of people it's killed yet to gauge possible dangers. (Genetic structure, R0, mortality rate, incubation period, etc.) The same is done for good old familiar flu that kills large numbers (excuse me, LARGE NUMBERS) every year. Those strains are analyzed, genetically and epidemiologically, for their potential to go all Hong Kong or Spanish flu on us, and appropriate measures for control and containment recommended, long before (one hopes) the death toll starts climbing significantly above the normal range.

I don't have a strong opinion on this, but in general I oppose "freak-outs, disinformation, hysteria, and propaganda."

Then stop freaking out about non-existent panics. Cancelled flights and quarantines are not panics. They're reasonable and prudent public health measures made by people who are responsible for making decisions with limited information. This is true regardless of who else might be trying to hijack a public health issue for their own agenda.

Ian: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no...no, no, not at all. I, I, I just think that the.. uh.. their appeal is becoming more selective.

Dr. Messonnier seems to be in charge of the testing debacle.
Perhaps part of her the sky is falling comment, was to distract how bad the CDC has failed on the testing side.

COVID-19/SARS-CoV2 Update 2-23-2020 — When the “New Versailles Class” Meets Reality Without Privilege

>To deal with this spread, the ROK government public health
>system is capable of 10,000 COVID-19 tests a day with a six-
>hour turn around.
>This contrasts with the American CDC test which has done 500 total tests.

Per the WSJ, HA had ZERO TEST KITS A WEEK AGO
https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-does-the-u-s-have-so-few-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-11582241112

And per Gavin Newsom, CA only has 200 test kits.
https://calmatters.org/health/2020/02/coronavirus-test-kits-masks-shortage-california/

From what I can pick up, the CDC has centralized CoronaVirus Testing, and required a test they only have a machine for, as a power grab.

FDA has some involvement in this, by not allowing other tests.

So private labs have not been allowed in the US to do CoronaVirus Testing.

Prior Federal Requirements is a person would only be tested if they had traveled overseas to an area with CoronaVirus, such as Wuhan. Unfortunately, the case in CA did not meet that requirement, hence the delay.

I see this as damage control by Dr. Messonnier:
Top health official denies low number of confirmed coronavirus cases in US caused by faulty tests
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/healthcare/top-health-official-denies-low-number-of-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-in-us-caused-by-faulty-tests

The current CDC test has issues, high negative rate, so a new test is being rolled out to replace it.

Seeing Inga and Chuck brings back the memory of Inga taking 11 months to decide that shooting Republican Congressmen down in cold blood is a bad thing (seriously, it took her 11 months to finally say that trying to kill Republicans was, perhaps, not the best thing.). So yes, it's entirely believable that she is hoping for millions of dead Americans at the hands of the virus. Of course, it should only be the "right Americans" who die--those deplorables, naturally. Heaven forbid a single illegal immigrant die--that means Trump personally murdered him or her or it (have we decided on pronouns for the 57 genders yet?)

And watching Chuck discuss Barron Trump--doesn't the Trump family have a restraining order out against Chuck? After all, it's a bit amusing for Chuck to concede that Barron Trump is a computer whiz, after Chuck's years long campaign to smear Barron as little more than a cave troll or something. Chuck does have expertise in the mental illness area though, I'll give him that.

As for the Corona virus--it appears to be really contagious, but relatively harmless. It is strange that of the usual "old people, young people, and people susceptible to respiratory illnesses", that it's only targeting for death old people with respiratory weaknesses--no young people as far as I know.

And yes - it is an actual name rather than just a handle used online. Friends and co-workers really do call me that, tho usually it is just "Penquin" for short.

So your actual name on your driver's license is something like Jonathan Livingston Penquin?

That said, the tale of how my name came to be is better told in person rather than typed out...if you really wanna know about it, ask me again if we see each other in person.

I guess so, will spare you. Not expecting to meet anyone on blogs, but if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.

Why would you even say it?

Because someone else up-thread was saying that there is "ample evidence that in his private life he is a very good person". I simply provided some evidence which I beleive suggests otherwise.

There are so many other forms of goodness than monogamy. It's hard to sincerely believe that you hang your hat on that. Nobody said he was perfect. We already knew that, he orders his steaks well done (or "done well," whatever). 'Twere invidious to particularize, but indeed there have been many examples of his actions which have pleased me.

I didn't say he was terrible. Didn't say he was evil. Didn't say he was bad. Nor did I say everyone/anyone who is divorced is automatically any of those things. Rather, just respectfully expressed my own opinion and explained why I felt as such, in the hope that those who can't wrap their head around the idea that others may honestly disagree with their opinion may have a better understanding of other peoples' viewpoints.

The responses has been very insightful, to say the least.

Insightful is my middle name, sure enough. Lots of very good people are divorced, some of them more than once. Indeed the person who marries and marries again exemplifies "the triumph of hope over experience."

He could have a new woman every night. What could be easier for a man (or woman) like Donald Trump than to live in sin and have bastards, to fob off the mothers with some pittance or other like the basketball players often seem to do, or have them aborted? Compared to that, he is very good indeed. (I give Jack Nicholson credit because, though he has taken what he wanted from women, evidently he pays the piper-maintains any number of natural children, when nothing would be more expected than having them zapped.)

I won't call you a hypocrite, because I don't know enough about you, but I find yours a shockingly shallow judgment, and to say that I don't believe you would, in this case, be a compliment.

some good reminders to combat the hype from the hack(D) press:

5 Reasons to Stop Freaking Out About Coronavirus

It is an unpleasant respiratory illness, but it is not an organ-destroying horror like Ebola. Precautions are being taken, a vaccine will emerge, and life will continue as usual.

Here are five specific reasons to chill out.

1. Coronavirus is a familiar illness, and not as bad as others. It is from the SARS family — and less deadly. As Ha’aretz noted, “the mortality rate from the current disease ranges from 0.5 to 2 percent, and is significantly lower than the mortality rate from the 2002 SARS outbreak (9.5 percent) and much lower than the 2012 SARS outbreak (34.4 percent). It may even be close to the mortality rate from an ordinary flu outbreak in the United States.”

2. The U.S. response has been exceptionally good. There have only been 16 cases thus far, none deadly. President Donald Trump bought precious time by stopping travel to China last month — a step critics said was overly drastic. Democrats are screaming about funding and staff cuts that never actually happened. The latest outrage: the White House is controlling the message. As they should! The people in lab coats are not always good communicators.

3. We are going to have a vaccine soon. There are private companies in the U.S. and around the world racing to develop a vaccine — not just because of the urgent public health need, but because whoever finds it first stands to make a lot of money. (This is where the profit motive, and the pharmaceutical industry, are so crucial — contrary to what Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar, and other Democrats running for president have been saying about them.)

4. China is going to be all right. The number of cases in China sounds large — until you consider the size of China. True, the Chinese government has been duplicitous about coronavirus, as it is about everything. (Amartya Sen famously observed that India, unlike China, has never suffered famine because India has a free press.) And U.S. firms are learning a long-overdue lesson about the risks of investing there. But China will eventually pull through.

5. The same people who want you to panic about coronavirus want you to panic about everything. The news business thrives on chaos. In addition, the media want to destroy Trump, which is why they spread the Russia collusion hoax. Coronavirus is not a hoax, but pundits should be asked if they cared enough about flu — which kills far more people — to get their shot this year. If not, ignore them. Remember to wash your hands, and stay cool."

Unless "soon" means at least 12 to 18 months then you can stop lying about this one. Check your sources. Are you aware that private companies have to trial their products and submit the data? Such a complacent dumb little Trump sycophant. In a world of a virus like Covid19, a year to 18 months is an eternity. Look at China, who tried to hide how bad this virus really was, from December to now over 84,000 with over 2,800 dead. Now it’s in over 50 countries.

Inga said...

The cuts started in 2018 as the White House focused on eliminating funding to Obama-era disease security programs. In March of that year, Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer, whose job it was to lead the U.S. response in the event of a pandemic, abruptly left the administration and his global health security team was disbanded.

That same year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was forced to slash its efforts to prevent global disease outbreak by 80% as its funding for the program began to run out. The agency, at the time, opted to focus on 10 priority countries and scale back in others, including China.

Also cut was the Complex Crises Fund, a $30 million emergency response pool that was at the secretary of state’s disposal to deploy disease experts and others in the event of a crisis. (The fund was created by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.)

Overall in 2018, Trump called for $15 billion in reduced health spending that had previously been approved, as he looked at increasing budget deficits, cutting the global disease-fighting budgets of the CDC, National Security Council (NSC), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Health and Human Services (HHS) in the process.

The effects of those cuts are being felt today. While the CDC announced plans to test people with flu-like symptoms for COVID-19, those have been delayed and only three of the country’s 100 public-health labs have been able to test for coronavirus. The administration’s request for additional funding came roughly two weeks after officials said HHS was almost out of funding for its response to the virus.”

“In 2018, Trump administration eliminated the position of senior director for global health security and biodefense as part of a broader downsizing of the NSC spearheaded by then-National Security Adviser John Bolton. Earlier this month, 27 Democratic senators sent a letter to current National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien urging him to reinstate the position and asking him to clarify how the White House plans to handle global health security threats.

Retired Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer held the position of senior director for global health security and biodefense on the NSC from April 2017 to July 2018. He previously coordinated the President’s Malaria Initiative under President George W. Bush, and is now the senior deputy assistant administrator for the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance at the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Cutbacks at that agency under the Trump administration are also receiving new scrutiny.

Last year, the USAID program known as PREDICT was shuttered. The initiative was launched in 2009 and designed to improve the “detection and discovery of zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential.” The program is credited with identifying nearly a thousand new zoonotic viruses, which are transmitted between animals and humans, and influencing the response effort currently being employed to combat the coronavirus, which is a zoonotic infection.”

Inga confuses a derivative with a quantity. The funding is yet positively monotonic. In any case these miss claimed "reductions" have "certainly" been devastating to the care provided over the 20 days that this crisis has been seen. A public servant can't take a dump in 10 days.

Inga said...

It’s a damn shame how ignorant Trumpists are. Anything to make excuses for Trump, even pandemic denial.

“In 2018, Trump tried to cut $65 million from this budget – a 10% reduction. In 2019, he sought a 19% reduction. For 2020, he proposed to cut federal spending on emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases by 20%. This would mean spending $100 million less in 2020 to study how such diseases infect humans than the US did just two years ago.

Congress reinstated most of this funding, with bipartisan support. But the overall level of appropriations for relevant CDC programs is still 10% below what the US spent in 2016, adjusting for inflation.

Even worse, in 2018 the administration disbanded its own global health security team, which was supposed to make the US more resilient to the threat of epidemics. This unfortunate decision was part of a reorganization that former national security adviser John Bolton carried out shortly after arriving at the White House.

Bolton eliminated the National Security Council’s global health security and biodefense directorate, and reshuffled its team of world-class infectious disease experts. In response, two highly respected leaders in the field – Rear Admiral Tim Ziemer, the NSC’s senior director for global health security and biodefense, and Homeland Security adviser Tom Bossert – left the White House.”

Same take as always. It's sad that they're so scared of the only Democrat in 60 years to run on the FDR platform. It's even sadder how in thrall they are to whatever empty, anti-FDR platform Bill Clinton and his acolytes have actually embraced as some sort of decent or winning philosophy.

As far as what they would dare to do or not do, nothing surprises me any more.

Scratch that - the only thing that surprises me is how little they care to win or create mandates, just so long as they stay just friendly enough to Wall Street while pushing the "socially liberal" PC protest warrior crap as if that actually has any salience in America or anywhere really.

The extents to which they're willing to shit on voters younger than 30 and why they see no point in the empty, Clintonian "third way" nonsense, that surprises me.

I got nothing against Wall Street. But they have to understand what a loser, go-nowhere platform it is to be the Wall Street PC warriors. Even the right doesn't love Wall Street as much as these DNC weirdos.

They need to be defeated. The failing NY Times had a story about them and their fears and efforts to control the thing today. It just reeked of desperation and vacuousness. Even the Republicans got to transition away from this. THey're much happier for having done so. The fact that people calling themselves "Democrats" are going to let Trump and the right steal the populist and even arguably more progressive mantle from them is all the proof you need of how useless they are. They need to be defeated decisively and taken to the wood chipper. And never allowed anywhere near in again.

Someone else can have them.

LLR-lefty and Sudden-Onset-Socialist Chuck: "Rep. Ted Lieu runs Sec. of State Mike Pompeo into the ground, asking him if he agrees with the Mulvaney statement to CPAC that the coronavirus scare is a "hoax.""

LOL

Its nice that Chuck and Inga have a brand new "Charlottesville" lie to push.

The previous lie was getting long in the tooth.

So Mike, can Elizabeth Warren count on your support for her plan to tax wealth, given that you think all those Trump-hating billionaires and millionaires don't actually work for a living?

Lizzie Warren is so stupid she couldn’t pour piss out of a boot if you printed the instructions on the heel.

@Narr, it was a lot of fun for a while. But age and bad knees catch up to one, and today’s students just want a piece of paper, not actually learn something they might use to get a job and perform well in it.

It's hard to sincerely believe that you hang your hat on that.

It was the qualifier of "very" that prompted my response. Again, ain't saying he (or anyone) is automatically a bad person for being twice-divorced. Rather, I beleive that strongly indicates that he is a not a very good" person...especially given what is known about the situations that led his two marriages coming to an end. (If he got divorced 'cause his wife was beating him, that would be a different thing.)

Reckon we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one - but I do appreciate learning more about yours, and others, point-of-view.

I guess it really is just easier to Let It Go but I don't know who you think of as a very good person. Give me some names. Then let's add two divorces to their lives' record and see if you still feel that way about them.

In general I don't understand your concern about divorce. Are you Catholic? All other faiths than Catholicism permit divorce, that I can think of. To be sure it is extremely unfortunate and I'm glad my parents have stayed together, but in this day and age, really?

From Wretchard article, As Frank Sinatra sang: "Oops, there goes a billion kilowatt dam."

The virus is devouring the entire Chinese medical system. NPR reports that patients requiring urgent surgery, and even cancer treatment, are simply turned away because the epidemic has used up all available Chinese resources. If you arrive in the hospital with a heart problem, too bad.

There's simply not room at health care facilities that are focusing on coronavirus patients. There's also concern that admitting non-COVID-19 patients could put them at risk of infection by the virus, especially if they suffer from a compromised immune system.

In Shanghai, 33 major hospitals announced they would stop offering treatment in specialties such as oncology and heart and lung surgery. Most cited directives from the municipal government to avoid infection within hospital wards as the chief reason.

A tweet by Chuck Schumer on February 5th.

That he just deleted today.

Of course he did.

Democrats and people that support them are just pieces of shit.

Mick you were right back before Trump was elected, and you called him "a terrible person." He hasn't changed one bit. And you know it.

Here's what you do now, Mick. You quarantine President Trump (for national security reasons) until he can stop saying shit-stupid things that epidemiology professionals need to correct in real time.

And that way, you can perhaps contain the spread of criticism of President Dementia J. Trump. Since that is your new job.

I suppose Comrade Bernie and Creepy, Sleepy, Dopey Joe offer a better world for schmegegge NeverTrumpers. Emperor Bloomberg approves: "Let your anger and your hatred flow through you."

Still Chelsea is not a mess like Hunter so you can say the Clintons were better parents than Bidens....Dems can take solace in the fact that Reagan was a bit problematic as a parent."

The stupidity in this comment and most of the ones above is beyond sublime. Still living in the pre-historic times is your cross to bear.

I have inhabited this planet for nearly seven decades. Traveled and worked and played and met a lot of people. I've never met a saint. I have met many people who have fought and overcome their failures and shortcomings. Most of em' are pretty modest about it.
Apparently PP is vying for sainthood.
What's that line from Robert Service? About feeling better about your god if they had wallowed in the mud like the rest of us.
Trump is like anybody else. He's had his triumphs and failures. Do I expect him to be a paragon of virtue? No. After all Clinton(both of em') set that bar very low.
