And so... Trump emerges from the shadow of impeachment....

ADDED: The verdict is in. The judgment is final. Not guilty on both counts.

Even the obscure Andrew Johnson didn't lose the vote of a single party member.

Obscure? He was the first president to be impeached! He took over after President Lincoln was assassinated!

Andrew Johnson was a Democrat. He was impeached by a House of Representatives dominated by Radical Republicans. There were 11 separate articles of impeachment, with widely varying vote totals. The first and most important one passed 126 to 47, with Democrats and Republicans voting on both sides. In the Senate, they ended up voting on three of the articles of impeachment, and all three votes failed 35-19 (They needed 36 votes) All 54 senators voted. 10 Republicans voted not guilty, and all 9 Democratic senators voted not guilty.

There were Democrats in the House that did vote against Johnson, so he lost their votes. Johnson only had nine votes to lose in the Senate, and would have lost if one of the ten Republicans had changed their vote.

I took great pleasure in listening to Romney's diatribe. You could literally hear the pain in his voice that his dream of helping oust Trump from the Oval Office came up crappers. His anquish this afternoon is sweet to my ears. I was sad when he lost in 2012, but in retrospect, after this, I no longer feel sorry he lost- 4 more years of Obama as president doesn't seem that bad any longer if it leaves Romney with the title of loser, just like Shelob.

Drago said...

My biggest concern is if somehow the dems can get to 49 or 50 seats in the Senate, I put the probability of Romney changing party to the dems at 50% in order to get rid of Trump before any investigation into Romney's son and former staffer turned Burisma Board member can come to fruition.

Yancey Ward said...

Trump will wear Romney conviction vote as a badge of honor, as he rightfully should.

I haven't seen anyone notice this, but the Senators elected in Nov 2020 take office on Jan 3, 2021, and the President elected doesn't take office until Jan 20, 2021. So if Dems can simply win 20 or 21 seats in the Senate, they can still remove Trump from office for the last 17 days of his Presidency. That'll show him.

If this happened after Trump was re-elected in November, he would become the second president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Pence would serve out whatever remained of those 17 days as president, and then Trump would be sworn in on the 20th. Pence would also still be eligible to run for two terms as president on his own.

’So if Dems can simply win 20 or 21 seats in the Senate...’

Super easy. Barely an inconvenience. 🤣

"I only caught a few minutes of the proceedings. It was about as exciting as watching an earthworm crawl across a sidewalk."

An earthworm is considerably faster than the Iowa Democrats counting the caucus votes.

Yancey Ward said...

Yes, if Trump wins in November and the Democrats can get to just 50 seats, Romney will switch parties or at least go independent and caucus with the Democrats. This is practically guaranteed to happen if the election turns out that way. You don't want Mitt Romney in your figurative foxhole.

I also will predict that from this point forward, Romney is likely to be a Dem vote on judge confirmations.

Not as long as it doesn't drive you to be a #nevertrumper.

Look we tried the polite way with the Tea Party movement. That got us government harassment, MSM attacks and outright hostility from the Establishment GOP. We tried the nice way with Mitt Romney who got savaged as he rolled over and showed his belly.

So, is Trump a bit of an asshole sometimes? Yea probably. But you know what? He's our asshole, and he fights for us. More importantly, he wins.

So be uncomfortable, as long as you don't vote Democrat...

I missed their reporting on the contents of President's heroic speech, if they bothered with one. I doubt it was neutral, much less kind or temperate. Because it was SO Good a speech with Such Good News, I predict/guess today they pretended to report on his speech but use the old deft deflection to swerve into a secondary focus, a "shiny object" diversionary sidestory, so the calm Heifers never hear that anything worthwhile was mentioned by the President.

I voted for Romney fairly enthusiastically in 2012, but I knew he was going to lose throughout the last month of the campaign. Had I been a bit more perceptive, I might have figured out he was going to lose all along. That debate when he just meekly submitted to Candy Crowley over the Benghazi attack told me everything I needed to know about the man- he just didn't have the backbone to fight for himself under what weren't even tough conditions. No matter what you think about him, Obama was a tough guy in the political realm- willing to do what was necessary to win.

What was striking about Romney plaintive mewling this afternoon was this- he thinks his vote is one of courage in the face of withering attacks. It is exactly the opposite- it is, in fact, just the exact same thing he did in that debate 8 years ago- meekly displaying his belly for the press, hoping to bask in their praise going forward. He is going to find his newfound friends despise him more than the Right does- he is now their poodle.

Probably OT. As he's leaving he asks me like, "What are you going to do when Trump tries to seize a third term? He already violates the Constitution" like he knows jack shit about it.

Where does this come from? Not only would Trump the patriot not contemplate this, other than joking and trolling, but well over half of Trump's base would desert. The 2024 question is succession and I'll go early on Pompeo, maybe big enough to fill Trump's shoes.

I get it. As president, he's just not "powerful" enough to deal with an anonymous revelation of his unlawful behavior! He's not strong enough and instead has to strip away an ethically behaving private citizen's quiet life so as to put it on par with Trump's chaotic, erratic drama vortices and Twitter tyranny instead.

That's how weak your president is. He has to intimidate people in order to keep them from telling the truth about him. No matter how outranked they are by him or unmatched in wealth and fame.

Pretty weak guy there, to have to do that. Even with the title of president!

Play as many word games as you want, GOP operative Drago.

Doxing the whistleblower just shows how much Drumpf (and his weak-willed lackey, Paul - who pretends to oppose the heavy hand of government action) really is. His need to rely on doxing, or intimidation.

Powerful people aren't naturally drawn to him. Because they know he's not a naturally powerful person. He's a charlatan who has to scream and slime his way to the top. How else is he to look down on everyone in the way he's always wanted to.

In the way that he's always felt looked down upon, as well.

Whatever jumbled up mess you wrote above serves no purpose whatsoever. Other than to make things confusing and, oh, conspiratorial!

Trump was in the wrong. There should be repercussions. You either want a president who can be above the law and pervert elections or you don't.

Wednesday - Bogus Impeachment Articles get ripped in half

What will be the next catastrophic Dem failure to bring Ritmo mewling and whining and projecting to Thursday's threads, I wonder.

ARM: "Are we also using that logic with the Great Pumkin? I am still waiting for our 11 hours of testimony."

Take him to court and make it happen! After all, its a slam dunk, right?

What Romney wanted more than anything else was to allow the dems to drag out the impeachment proceedings to give the democrats a greater opportunity to harm the Trump re-election campaign.

That's it. Romney wants to help the dems to defeat Trump.

Period.

Yup.

Romney was/is hoping to be on a Dem "unity" ticket as the VP.

LOL!

PeePee wants the Dems to run the country? You assholes can't even run a caucus in Iowa without screwing it up.

Of course, it's probably not just incompetence. The DNC is interfering with the election because they're terrified of Bernie. Your party chooses your leaders for you, serf.

Today was a great day for America. No wonder you're enraged. Oh, wait, that's your default setting.

Good night, serf! Obey your betters in the DNC. They know what's best for you.

Check out this floozy's rant.

Serfs? Her party is the one that demands absolute loyalty to its fuehrer.

I'm watching Hogan's Heroes right now. Don't watch much tv, but lately I found this classic line-up that's interesting to see.

Anyway, Colonel Klink and Crew. How susceptible they were to flattery, chaos and personality cults. All under the guise of absolute loyalty to the supreme leader, his authority, and all the bumbling nitwits who can't find purpose any other way.

The similarities to Don Drumpf and his own personality cult are stark.

Ann...do you feel that this circus was started by Trump or by the Democrats? Because I am in agreement with your wish for less drama...boring would be good. But it is clear to me that we won't ever have boring as long as there is anyone in the White House that disagrees with the current crazy crop of Democrats...so who actually has to go? My vote is for ever single Democrat that voted for this bullhockey shampeachment. Let's clean house of everyone who voted for this sham...let's get people in on both sides that use logic and reason and stop the craziness. I'm a Trump voter this year FOR SURE...but after that we need to take our country back and stop this entrenched deep state crap. What say you?

Sounds like the timeline to litigate this stuff is one that works for you. Live for the moment, consequences be damned. Just put everything off forever. That's the Trump way. Never face justice! Trump is a law unto himself.

Sue the guy whose lawyers say that he should be able to murder Americans and not face indictment.

Hey, at least he got O.J. and Jeffrey Epstein's lawyer to defend him. I think that speaks to how legally sound his cause is.

Well, at least if they have no case they can tie everything up by stalling forever in the courts. That suits Trump and Team just fine. Whatever it takes to evade culpability today, they proclaim.

Just keep on running. The Axis of Weasels are sleazier and slimier than an entire army of Slick Willies.

I was about to post a tremendously insightful and incisive comment, but I noticed that ARM and Ritmo had been activated.

Good night folks.

Trump is still POTUS. The stock market is happy and we are living in the best of times despite the insanity of the political class.

Life is no longer nasty, brutish and short for most people.

I posted a question here months ago when this issue first came up, and got no answer from our resident Democrats/Progressives. It was a way to evaluate the impeachment drive in this case:

If the President were Hillary Clinton in November 2019, with all the players the same as they are with all the same facts except that instead of Joe Biden it were Marco Rubio with the cokehead son working for Burisma, do you think there would be an impeachment and a trial with this set of facts?

I think the answer is here is certainly, no, there wouldn't have even been a House inquiry. I think everybody in this thread, Left and Right, knows this is true, so the impeachment itself is just a partisan ploy by the Democrats- full stop.

I think if, in the hypothetical, the House and Senate were controlled by the Republicans, there still wouldn't have been an impeachment because the media would have been in full-throated roar that the matter wasn't a crime and wasn't impeachable. I think most of the people in these threads also understand this is true. At worst, there might have been a House investigation that would have gotten zero cooperation by the White House, and zero cooperation from people like Sondland, Taylor, Yovonavich, etal.

Clinton only got impeached because the evidence that he had lied, committed perjury, and suborned perjury couldn't be really be denied after a certain point, and the media didn't actually spend 7 months defending him on this- only when it reached the House did the media suddenly got into defense mode for Clinton, and provided the cover for his acquittal. An acquittal, by the way, I didn't think a travesty, though I probably would have convicted him if I were voting.

This is why you don't do partisan impeachments. For them to be bipartisan requires extremely convincing evidence of actual impeachable offenses. That was never the case here, and no amount of lying by the media and the Democrats will change that.

When you can't convince Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, it means you had no case.

BINGO.
