"When celebrities wear pajamas to an event, they are called fashionable. But when ordinary people wear pajamas to walk around on the streets, they are called uncivilized."

Someone wrote in Chinese social media, quoted in "Chinese City Uses Facial Recognition to Shame Pajama Wearers/Local officials apologized, but the crackdown on a common — and comfortable — practice has raised a rare outcry over privacy in a country accustomed to surveillance" (NYT).
When officials in an eastern Chinese city were told to root out “uncivilized behavior,” they were given a powerful tool to carry out their mission: facial recognition software.

Among their top targets? People wearing pajamas in public.... Public pajama wearing is common in China, particularly among older women, who tend toward bold colors and floral or cartoon patterns....

Public shaming is a common tactic. In theaters, laser pointers are used to shame audience members who play on their phones during shows. And in Shanghai, facial recognition systems have been installed at some crosswalks to single out jaywalkers.

After the online uproar on Monday, urban management officials in Suzhou quickly took down the original post and issued an apology....
The shamers were themselves shamed. Shame shaming works.

ADDED: If you look at the history of pajamas, you'll see that the original meaning is "leg clothing" and the reference is to loose, flowing pants worn in India, Pakistan, and Iran. When the style was first used by westerners, it "was associated with masquerade costume, actresses, and prostitution, not with respectable women" until feminists — in the mid-19th century — began wearing them under a knee-length skirt and calling them "bloomers." It was only later that pajamas became sleepwear too.

In the 20th century, various designers came up with "pajama" styles — for the beach and for evening wear ("palazzo pajamas"). The 70s designer Halston pushed glamorous "pajama" styles, and that caused women's magazines to suggest the economical alternative of simply buying things that are sold as lingerie.

Now, what these Chinese women are doing is different in that they're not choosing pajamas that most resemble things fashion designers present as street wear. They're choosing things that look especially like sleepwear — like bright pink flannel with printed cartoon images. This is not just about comfort. I'm seeing personal expression, a desire to be playful and fun.

If it were just comfort clothing, wouldn't it look like the "traditional Chinese workwear"? My link goes to a French on-line store that sells that style and says:
Here it is, the iconic 100% cotton uniform straight from China which has crossed revolutions and various continents to get to you....

Those who recognize a good cut beyond its historical symbolism include Yves Saint Laurent, naturally, and Michel Klein - who loves the Chinese work jacket so much that it took the lead at the Guy Laroche fashion show at the Ritz, and then Inès de la Fressange, who is always up to date when it comes to timeless basics.

The presence of the Chinese work uniform in the fashion world owes much to the young Maoists in a 1968 Paris, the advocates of the “Little Red Book” in Saint-Germain-des-Prés....

Public shaming is a very effective tactic. But it’s a dangerous tool because it’s not really under anyone’s control and no one is exempt.

Social norms. Ha! They are as fickle as, ....as, .... well, I don't know what I am allowed to say anymore about that.

Some people will always want to identify new rules as they go along. Call them the perpetually concerned crowd, trying to make heaven on earth. Unfortunately for them, the good Lord also made creatures who, when they see a rule (or convention), instinctively ask why why why. The rebel with or without cause crowd keep the perpetually concerned crowd in check, and the dance of order and chaos will last as long as time. Hopefully civilly, with the pajama Prohibitionists and the pajama Exhibitionists never having complete control over the other.

Worse, though, are the end justifies the means crowd. They don't care about norms or rules unless it suits them, but otherwise will destroy and twist whatever needs to, in their quest to impea- er, I mean achieve the premise that they started from, many months ago.

I don't know what to do with those Norms-abusing people. Calling them hypocrites is apparently insufficient. I guess when you believe in something, you think yourself to be right to stop at nothing, and are blind to the resulting consequences of your zeal.

"When I wear pajamas," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."

"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make pajamas mean so many different things."

After the “denazification” of the US Joe Scarboro was pushing, and she who shall not be names was repeating here, you know, when Democrats take control, we can live in such a paradise where the government has the power to end all behaviors that bother our betters. The crazy old lady next door who feeds the sandhill cranes bread was just walking around her front lawn in panties and a black bra, I have that image burned in my head now, wouldn’t it be great if the government could put her in a camp so she won’t insult my vision anymore? Clearly we need this here.

The problem isn't pajamas, it's Western-style pajamas. The similarity to traditional Chinese clothing, and people not choosing Chinese clothing, is what makes it scandalous (in the minds of the politicians).

I have been wondering about this societal cleanup of Trump supporters that MSNBC is pushing. Will Althouse have her blog shutdown for "neutrality in the face of evil”? Will people who have been caught on video in MAGA hats be put in camps? Obviously Trump will go to jail as soon as he is removed from power. Obviously Pence too, because he is standing between Pelosi and the presidency. Will Fox News be shut down? Will Hannitty be hanged, after he’s hanged, will he shut up? Or will the Democrats be generous in victory and allow Trump supporters to leave the country without the hanging we deserve, like Lincoln did with Jefferson Davis? I doubt it. Lincoln was a Republican.

For the Chinese, life is about balance.
You have to drink enough to keep your organs unusable, but not so much you forget to get dressed.
The path is as narrow and difficult to walk as a razor's edge. Plus, you're drunk, so...I'm willing to cut an old lady some slack if she shows up at the liquor store in her pajamas sometimes.

I first went to Asia, mostly Hong Kong and Bangkok, in the mid-90s, and remember being struck by this style. It was definitely not just or mostly old ladies then: all manner of women, but especially young women, were walking around the city in floral print silk or satin pajamas and flip-flops. I also spent some time in Goanghzhou, on the mainland, and I didn't see women wearing pajamas there, but I did see some men about in pajamas.

daskol বলেছেন...

This drinking spot in the little town I was in at night had the most amazing clash of styles: men in uniform, men in pajamas, men in saffron robes (monks), women in evening wear (mistresses) accompanying men in uniform and pajamas, and prostitutes in pajamas. There were no "respectable" women at this particular spot, except the servers. Beer, cognac and durian fruit were the main fare.

When a rogue pfc in the Army of Chinese workers dares to chose their own dress uniforms, then the State's military discipline and esprit can be lost. They must be disciplined and if necessary given a dishonorable discharge. Which could actually make the Party fashion critics some big money from prisoner organ sales.

An analogy to this Chinese fashion bruhaha happened in the 1960s among the USA's city dweller elites who started wearing the farm hand and miners wear in public. How shameful to see those denim blue jeans being worn in civil society

When I first went to Shanghai in 1976 people wore pyjamas on the street and I found it all rather charming. It was like the streets were their lounge rooms, their living rooms, their dining rooms, their outdoor homes. Everything peaceful, quiet, friendly. I’d sit on a stool to slurp down a bowl of dan-dan noodles … and chat.
And in the heat of summer folks draped a wet white cloth over their heads. Cool!

Please pardon my jumping in - long time lurker, almost never poster - but this is such an amusing topic I couldn't resist.

My neighborhood in San Francisco is heavily Chinese, and the pajama thing is rampant. My across the street neighbor likes to wash his car while resplendent in his Captain America PJ pants and missmatched top. Among Chinese ladies of a certain age, the more outrageous the missmatch the better.

However, the other side of pajamas becoming fashion has a long history, going back to the twenties and thirties, when one-piece pajama-like outfits became the rage as resort wear. These garments were considered perfectly acceptable for afternoon wear - drinks on the deck overlooking the beach, or strolling along the boardwalk. The outfit was often halter style/backless, with wide leg palazzo trousers and a tunic like jacket for modesty. Prints and abstracts were popular, with solid colors as contrast accent.
