"More nuanced analyses of the Sanders-Warren conflict suggest that maintaining a nonaggression pact would be mutually beneficial because otherwise..."

"... Biden could run away with the nomination. But the word 'mutually' is debatable. I’d argue nonaggression toward Warren is pretty clearly in the best interest of Sanders, who was in the stronger position than Warren heading into the debate and who would probably prefer to focus on Biden. But it’s probably not beneficial to Warren. Any scenario that doesn’t involve Warren winning Iowa will leave her in a fairly rough position — and winning Iowa means beating Sanders there."

Writes Nate Silver (at FiveThirtyEight).

I take SIlver's analysis seriously. He has a model that estimates the probability of a first ballot convention victory, based on outcome of Iowa caucus. This model shows that if Warren wins Iowa, she has a better than 50 % chance of a first ballot victory; if Buttigieg wins and she comes in second, she has a 20% chance; anything else, and her probabilities fall to single digits. So this makes Iowa look make or break for Warren. So the Warren Sanders tiff (from this perspective) is not so much about knocking off Sanders as it is about shaking up the whole Iowa status quo and doing something (anything!) to propel Warren to the top. Not just improvement from today's polls which have Warren at 16 % but something (anything!) to move her ahead of Biden and Sanders. (I know I'm repeating myself in an attempt to make my point more clearly, but...) It doesn't help Warren one single bit if she moves ahead of Sanders but Biden wins Iowa (from the perspective of SIlver's analytical model).

The apt historical comparison here is not Hitler-Stalin. The proper comparison is Stalin-Trotsky. The electorates are various sorts of lefties who all loath each other more than they loath the Right, a long history built around the vanity of small differences.

Why bring up a controversy that would have been completely unknown if she hadn’t mentioned it, except to garner sympathy due to her membership in at least one victim class?

Not only was the conversation private, she knows that it was out of school, and unrecorded, so she can never be proven wrong.

Sanders has progressive bona fides, and it would be out of character for him to say a woman couldn’t win the presidency, or beat Trump. I disagree with him politically, but Sanders seems to be an honest man, which is more than I can say for that woman.

I do think the story at CNN was a desperate ploy by Warren to get into the top two in Iowa, and if it was, it was a poor strategic choice. I think it backfired and I think it finished Warren's campaign. A much better tactic would have been to go after the Bidens, not Sanders- Biden and his son are much softer and juicier targets, and she could have staked out the ground that the Democrats are being foolish in considering Biden with all the ethical problems that Trump will highlight against him in the general election. I just can't figure out why Warren thinks lying is the way to go time after time- they aren't lies about really important matters and, worse, are lies that aren't believable or are easily proven as lies. She just isn't very smart, I think.

I think, as of right now, she is going to finish 4th or worse in both Iowa and New Hampshire, and Sanders is getting close to finishing 1st in both.

Yancey Ward said...

Michael K,

I just don't see Bloomberg running third party- it would all but guarantee Trump's reelection. Bloomberg as a third party candidate could have damaged Trump if he hadn't switched back to the Democratic Party during his time as mayor, but now he would be stuck with the Democrat label and would draw 2/3s or more of his support from the Democratic candidate in the general election. His presence as a third party candidate would allow Trump to win states like NJ, NM, CO, MN, NH, DE, VA, OR, CT, and maybe even CA. I mean, I hope he runs a third party candidate, but I don't think he is stupid enough to do it.

Don't dumb you or us down. State why the difference, by definition, by any use of logic, if a "great" ruler wouldn't have been why it would have been different if another took their place. Even if Bernie said something along those lines, choosing to interpret whatever he said to mean that she therefore couldn't win was disingenuous enough to be disqualifying. Enough of the lies! Which female candidate pointed out that at least Bernie was being honest about the funding of his silly healthcare "plan," and that Warren wasn't?

Not to set off Full Moon again, but what is wrong with American female candidates when it comes to high office that compels them to complain that everyone is picking on them? How is such a self-victim mentality ever a winning strategy for any presidential candidate? How does it convey the resilience necessary for national office and leading the world's largest military? Which female national leader anywhere in the world ever sought pity by complaining about people not believing in/liking/wanting to vote for her as a way of successfully pulling off an election or a term in office? Angela Merkl? Golda Meir? Margaret Thatcher? Indira Gandhi? Why are only Americans stupid enough to think that this whiny BS should work? It's astounding to me that people are so deficient of character as to prefer pity over the glory of the win. Does any job candidate expect to get hired (or even get hired) by saying, "People here probably don't like me and wouldn't hire me anyway. They just don't believe I'll get hired" Did this work for Hillary?

Blows my mind every time. They just can't help themselves.

Hell has surely frozen over. I am applauding Ritmo's comment. Well done, PTPSPPC. When you're right, you're right.

I wish the Statist Gang would sign a non-aggression pact with the National Taxpayers Union and the NRA.

Yeah, I noticed that also, along with complaining about the evil white man. Do Republican women candidates do the same thing? Or is it only dems simply appealing to their pussy hat/pussy whipped?

Sarah Palin. Condolleeza Rice. Nikki Haley.

58% of the attendees for Trumps rally in Milwaukee were democrats or independents.

Union leaders, democrats all (including in the Minnesota Iron Range) are warning the dems that their traditional dem voters are all swinging Trump. This is evidenced further by Colin Petersen's vote on impeachment and the national Manufacturers Council praising Trump today for having kept his promises.

Not sure if this is true. But I wouldn't doubt it. This is not the year for Democrats. They've been out-working class hero'ed by a a guy set up with a trust account paying him 6 figures annually by age 3.

Warren must be a moron. Apparently she really thought the "people are mean to me because I'm a woman" thing would work. ?

Blows my mind every time. They just can't help themselves.

Proud of you bruv. You see it coming. Don't worry, I fear, no one will follow PDT in the GOP so a D reformer, if he can beat the system next time, can clean up.
