"I like Cali sober because for me it means that even though I’m getting older, and I take monthlong breaks from drinking occasionally, it doesn’t mean that my life can’t still be enjoyable."

"It’s sort of equivalent to being a silver fox: your hair might be gray, and you might be taking it a little slower, but you can still be hot!"

Says Naomi Fry, a staff writer at The New Yorker, quoted in "What Does It Mean to Be ‘Cali Sober’?" (NY Magazine). NY Magazine defines "Cali sober" as abstaining from alcohol but smoking marijuana.

Every Urban Dictionary definition for "silver fox" says it's a sexy older man.

Wikipedia has a list of famous people who have been nicknamed "silver fox" — and all are men (George Clooney,  Anderson Cooper, Charlie Rich, Duke Snider, Eduard Shevardnadze...).

The Merriam-Webster website defines the "silver fox" as "generally meaning 'an attractive middle-aged man having mostly gray or white hair'" and gives a history of the term going back to a 1920s baseball player, Jess Petty, who had gray hair. But...
Silver fox is sometimes used to refer to women with gray or white hair as well (in fact, the bestselling exercise video Richard Simmons and the Silver Foxes from 1987 clearly meant both men and women, since they perform the workout together behind the fitness guru), but many uses make clear reference to the fact that the term usually designates men...
I don't think Naomi Fry is very old herself. I was reading her Twitter feed...

... but it strikes me as really unattractive for an older women to proclaim that she's sexually attractive. And I feel completely alienated from the idea that you're "hot" and preserving your last chance to have an "enjoyable" life because you smoke weed. And I see no equivalence between leaving your head in its naturally gray condition and infusing your natural head with an intoxicating substance.

IF she thinks SHE'S attractive, she needs to put away the pipe; and try sober sober

You know, I think I'm gonna be the balding virile type, you know, as opposed to say, the um distinguished gray, for instance, you know, unless I'm neither of those two. Unless I'm one of those guys with saliva dribbling out of his mouth who wanders into a cafeteria with a shopping bag screaming about socialism." Woody Allen in Annie Hall

I read through her Twitter feed, too. I adore how everyone reads Trump's mind and is sure they know exactly why he "reacts" the way he does to the booing.

It appeared to me both he and Melanie turned to wave at a few supporters who may have gotten his entourage's attention and were pointed out; but I'm putting the jaw clenching down to the fact that Trump knows he's in the lion's den. I don't care how good security is - he is a target every time he's out, especially in a crowd, and he knows it. And he knows that people are being ramped up and literally want him not just impeached but dead.

The hand clapping? He wasn't cheering himself, idiots. You're at a sporting event. Ever seen athletes pump themselves up before the game? Yeah.

This ties right into our pot and wine posts from yesterday.
Speaking as a brain damaged former pot smoker (and former drinker)....

If you "like" toking up, because that way; "even though" you "take monthlong breaks from drinking occasionally", your life can "still be enjoyable": think about it

You are EXPLICITLY ADMITTING that your life Can Have NO JOY without your addictions
Just the thought of occasionally going 28 days without your booze robs you life of joy. The ONLY thing that could possibly make your life "still be enjoyable" is burning down a joint, 3 or 5 times a day.

You're making your life, you're making your life SAD; not me. I'm just reporting it

None of us are getting any younger. Graceful aging can be quite nice. It just needs a bit of acceptance.

I agree but suggest that when she writes this she is speaking to herself, out loud. This is just one of those therapy by public writing pieces.

A Silver Fox is a very social single sensual lady in her 60s who loves to try out new and powerful men for 6 months or so. Then they move onto another challenge. As a result of practice they are extremely wise and great lovers.

Every regular pot user I have ever known (6 of them that I can remember off the top of my head) are fundamentally unsuccessful in all their life pursuits- career, marriage, parenthood, etc.- and these were people who didn't have access to the more powerful strains of the plant that are increasingly available today. It could be that cause and effect is reversed here, but I doubt it- there are a ton of alcoholics who only lose it all when the drinking gets out of control, not before.

I feel like the theme today is delusion. Two unattractive women who either delude themselves that they are a "silver fox", neither silver nor fox. Or flaunting open boobs, that nobody wants to see.

Very well put.

I think younger people don't realize how enjoyable it can be to live in the old part of your life. One way to enhance the possibility that you will have that for yourself when the time comes is to do what you can to stay healthy. Obviously you should avoid putting toxic substances into your body. It is so stupid to smoke anything. Quite aside from whether these substances are physically debilitating, you ought to ask yourself why you don't enjoy living with the mind that is naturally yours. I understand wanting to take the edge off your thoughts — to disinhibit — but it would be better to be at peace with yourself and to be able to enjoy what your mind produces for you naturally.

Regarding dope, a few observations:

1. It is true, I have met successful men who have smoked a lotta dope, but, who, somehow, compartmentalized it, so that it didn't interfere with their dreams and plans and careers.

2. It is true, I have met athletes, who suffer so much pain from their rigorous sports, that they prefer dope to opioids to relieve said pain.

But these are the exceptions, not the rule.

3. Many of the "potheads" at my big public high school in big blue city in NorCal, were neither athletes, nor ambitious. They just liked to smoke dope, in lieu of doing anything productive. They smoked a lot. They never really recovered. They are now in their 50s with many regrets.

4. Also, much of the pot use for teenagers is geared towards getting girls high, to loosen up their inhibitions.

5. I've met very few female potheads, but they are uniformly a fucking mess as they get older.

6. I've met married couples, who are so bored with each other, that they can't even enjoy sex without dope anymore. (Yes, they usually get divorced.)

7. In sum, a little pot as an adult, may be doable, may not be a terrible thing, may be a reasonable escape from the stresses of life. But smoking dope as a teenager, is almost always a big mistake.

I didn't put anything toxic in my body, but I still got cancer (tongue and neck). I lost most of my beard and the hair on the back of my head from the ears down from the treatment. The doctors thought it was caused more from the radiation treatment than the chemo. Here's the thing: I had a lot of grey hair, especially in my beard, but when it all grew back it was dark. So there's that.

Basically an article about trading in booze for weed. A subject that will become more common as weed gains legal acceptance. As someone who has never given up the former and never started up on the latter I try not to be judgmental about weed users although don't encourage it

Funny how everything ends up looking like professional wrestling. And the best and brightest of Washington walk right into the role; there is always a wrestler who everyone hates and boos. Expect Trump to have this happen every week until the election in 2020.

AA, "...I think younger people don't realize how enjoyable it can be to live in the old part of your life..." I agree with your sentiments 100%. However, I really don't care what "...younger people..." think of older people, except for those who live their lives by the wisdom of their experiences. Why do I care what the "Kardashians" think about older people, for example - NADA!

Let me agree with Althouse, I think. I've always considered it weird to light something and then breathe in the smoke. Very, very, odd. The same with injecting yourself with crap or putting illegal pills in your mouth. I mean, what's in that pill? Oh you got it from a drug dealer? Well, it must be OK then. LOL.

OTOH, having an occasional beer or glass wine with your lunch or dinner is perfectly natural, if not done to excess. Jesus drank wine. What is excess? Doctors say, over 2 bottles of wine a week - for men.

rcocean said...

Talking about mind control. Isn't it weird how a hand full of people are allowed to control the mind of the USA? Jeff Zucker at CNN, the editors at the NYT, Wapo, WSJ, AP and the 5 other new execs at PBS/ABC/NBC/CBS/Fox more or less control what we think about the world everyday. Why don't we know more about them? Who are they? what do they consider news? And why? why do they all march in lockstep except for Fox?

no one seems to care. Just a given. Like the sun rising in the east.

The connection is it's about being cool. Liberals in general remain obsessed with being cool as long as they live. (My family still does it into their 70's anyway.) This goes double for those in New York and LA, and triple for NYT writers. Think how often Maureen Dowd got compared to a high school girl in her type of snark.
