"The Weight."

"Put the load right on me" means something different these days.

Mid-Life Lawyer કહ્યું...

Nice. Good start to the morning of my 60th birthday.

Danno કહ્યું...

Good music to start the day.

MidLifeLawyer - Happy birthday.

Danno કહ્યું...

So mid-life extends to 60? I'm all for that notion.

Mr. Forward કહ્યું...

That was magical. What the internet was supposed to be.

brylun કહ્યું...

Excellent! Thanks!

brylun કહ્યું...

We had 3rd row seats to see Lukas Nelson perform with his dad Willie and Neil Young at the Outlaw Tour in Saratoga Springs last year and we were very impressed. Neil Young wasn't bad either!

Beasts of England કહ્યું...

Very nice, indeed... I’ve seen a similar mash-up for Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’.

gratefulgee કહ્યું...

Reason #10,121,947 why I love this place. Thank you, madame Althouse.

rehajm કહ્યું...

Happy 60th birthday Mid-Life Lawyer. Do you think you’re getting a new name for your birthday?

John henry કહ્યું...

Beasts,

I don't think that is a "mashup" of different performances.

John Henry

Marcus Bressler કહ્યું...

Thank you for that most excellent video. I love anything with Ringo!

Beasts of England કહ્યું...

Mine was probably not an accurate term, John Henry - but I’m not supposed to be up this early, so I hope you’ll let it slide... :)

Tank કહ્યું...

Well, that was nice.

Happy Birthday Mid.

Howard કહ્યું...

I can't listen to stuff like this because the original studio recording was so much better, unlike Lana Del Ray's sultry, smokey take on Sublime's Doin Time

Birches કહ્યું...

I liked it. Have no idea what they're trying to change. But I liked the song.

The original is probably a perfect song. I always loved the line, "hey wait a minute Chester."

Birches કહ્યું...

Hard disagree on that cover, Howard. Lana del Rey did nothing for me compared to the original.

BxBomber કહ્યું...

Lovely! Thanks for sharing Ann!

Earnest Prole કહ્યું...

Compare and contrast: with Mavis, Cleotha, Yvonne, and Roebuck in 1977.

michaele કહ્યું...

Had a funny thought while watching (and enjoying this)...what if had been done about 7 years ago and, for some some reason, Donald Trump had been included. Maybe playing the bongos in a picturesque setting on one of golf courses. Heads would explode and the musicians would be mortified.

Nichevo કહ્યું...

HB MLL!
AMM! (and many more)

Lloyd W. Robertson કહ્યું...

Great stuff indeed.

Funny or sad wrinkle in the Wikipedia entry for the song:

Songwriting credit dispute
The songwriting credit to Robbie Robertson for "The Weight", like credit for many of the songs performed by The Band, was disputed years later by Levon Helm. Helm insisted that the composition of the lyrics and the music was collaborative, declaring that each band member made a substantial contribution. In an interview, Helm credited Robertson with 60 percent of the lyrics, Danko and Manuel with 20 percent each of the lyrics, much of the music credit to Garth Hudson, and a small credit to himself for lyrics.[19]

Roger Sweeny કહ્યું...

That was an awe-inspiring amount of cultural appropriation.

An example of how wonderful cultural appropriation can be.

Calypso Facto કહ્યું...

"Lana Del Ray's sultry, smokey take on Sublime's Doin Time"

That has to be the absolutely worst cover I've ever heard. Take all of Sublime's original, gritty, street cred commentary and gloss over it with a poorly sung pop take by a listless and skill-less faux celebrity foisted on us as a joke (or sadism), I'm convinced, by some rich, well-connected relative in the promotional business.

Whew. Glad I got that off my chest.

Wince કહ્યું...

Somebody tell Robbie Robertson "the weight" of his man-boob is hanging over his guitar @ 0:27

NCMoss કહ્યું...

Excellent! I hope a few caught the Ringo comment about the song being in the key of F demented (diminished haha). And happy birthday to MLL at 5:40.

rightguy કહ્યું...

Best music video ever made.

Charlie Currie કહ્યું...

It was great seeing Larkin Poe included. A hot up and coming sister blues roots act. And, actual relatives of Edgar. Won a ton of Independent Blues awards this year.

Thanks professor for starting the day off so pleasantly.

Francisco D કહ્યું...

That is a terrific video.

However, it must confuse SJWs because it is an example of:

1. American cultural imperialism or;

2.Appropriation of American musical culture.

I guess that why SJWs are so neurotic. They cannot enjoy this wonderful video.

BudBrown કહ્યું...

Sweet video. Luv the song. Tho I've decided it gave an undeserved spiritual heft to Easy Rider. Been listening to it a lot the past year on the mp thru the radio. 50 years and I still don't know what the heck the thing's about. Dylanesque?

Oso Negro કહ્યું...

The Weight used to be on the pre-show playlist at Armadillo World Headquarters back in the day. Good song, good times.

Arashi કહ્યું...

Thank you very much for the video. Nicely done all around.

Tomcc કહ્યું...

That was terrific, thanks for posting!

Carter Wood કહ્યું...

I commend the latest Ken Burns documentary series, Country Music. Lots to quibble about, but I'm learning a lot.

Learned alot today. Never cared much for music videos, but this was excellent. And I thought Dylan wrote that number. And I thought Robbie Roberston committed suicide many years ago. Are he and Levon Helm the only Band members who didn't?

PM કહ્યું...

If music isn't our best invention I don't know what is.

Smerdyakov કહ્યું...

Terrific rendition. I am still partial to the live version in "Before the Flood".

Birches કહ્યું...

I figured the video was what you liked most about that song Howard. Haha

Huh? Richard Manuel was the only one who committed suicide. Levon died of cancer, Rick Danko died of heart failure and Garth Hudson is still alive.

Bob કહ્યું...

Nice version! Sad to say, I don't believe someone could cover The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down these days, the Cancel Culture brigade would snivel and shake their widdle fists and get it taken down.
