Trump floats a new nickname — "four horsewomen of the apocalypse" — and rails against the do-nothing Democrats.

I'm reading Trump's tweets this morning.

First, there's this quote from Louisiana Senator John Kennedy (in 3 parts: 1, 2, 3):
"In America, if you hate our Country, you are free to leave. The simple fact of the matter is, the four Congresswomen think that America is wicked in its origins, they think that America is even more wicked now, that we are all racist and evil. They’re entitled to their opinion, they’re Americans. Now I’m entitled to my opinion, & I just think they’re left wing cranks. They’re the reason there are directions on a shampoo bottle, & we should ignore them. The 'squad' has moved the Democrat Party substantially LEFT, and.....they are destroying the Democrat Party. I’m appalled that so many of our Presidential candidates are falling all over themselves to try to agree with the four horsewomen of the apocalypse. I’m entitled to say that they’re Wack Jobs."
Then, Trump's own words:
The Democrats in Congress are getting nothing done, not on drug pricing, not on immigration, not on infrastructure, not on nothing! Sooo much opportunity, yet all they want to do is go “fishing.” The American people are tired of the never ending Witch Hunt, they want results now!
I added the boldface to reveal an interesting resonance.

ADDED: So... the rhetoric is — They think we're wicked and there are witches, and we think they are the destruction of one fourth of humanity:
I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest... Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword... before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, 'A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!'... I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.... They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by the sword (war), famine, and plague and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Micheal: The best example of marketing in drugs -

Are you still on this thread?

I have a bottle of generic drugs that have the exact same ingredients as the non-generic.

But they aren't working as well. Is that common? If so, how is it possible, assuming the labeling isn't a lie. Can the processing of the drugs affect how they differ?

Wife had the same issue when they switched her thyroid med to generic. She got the doc to go back to the original prescrip because the generics had a noticeably different effect.

How is that possible? Can the ingredients be listed as the same but have lesser quality or something?

My partner’s ex seriously didn’t want her seen in Dollar Tree (or the 99¢ stores in PHX and LAS). I, on the other hand, am basically cheap (so is she).

My wife loves "99 cents" stores.

Back to drugs. Another story I have in my medical history book is that of phenothiazines. SKF bought that patent from the French, who found them as a result of research on antihistamines.

Lithium was discovered by an Australian names John Cade who was doing research on mania. He thought there might be a substance in the urine, like urea in gout. He discovered the effect in Manic Depression but, because Lithium cannot be patented, no drug company was pushing it.

Hard to tell but it is widely reported. Watch out for drugs from China as they use very poor quality standards. Big scandal on Heparin recently,

Thyroid is a common example of generic and premium differences.

Re nicknames, I'd like to see individual ones for the three who aren't AOC. "Occasional Cortex" was good; "Chiquita Khrushchev" is even better.

Wags, get to work.

Can we recycle Mullah Omar?

There's a link on Instapundit to a compendium of anti-American statements by the "Mean Girls Commie Caucus" (as someone called them). Insty says: "There are two things Leftists hate above all: the United States; and havig their patriotism questioned."

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I'm sorry, I've read this several times and I see NOWHERE in there any words relating to loving your country or hating it.

Care to try again?

Bilwick said...

You kind of miss the point, Callahan. The second part of your post is a non-sequitur to the first. (Or is that deliberate? In my experience, "lberals"--by which I mean of course "tax-happy, coercion-addicted, power-tripping government humpers and State fellators"--like to do that. It's easier than presenting a logical argument.)

I wouldn't argue that the Pharmas spend too much on marketing. It's voluntary, and the executives want to maximize profits. I assume they know what they are doing. They certainly have the resources to figure it out. if it wasn't worth it, I assume they wouldn't spend that much.

Jamie said...

John Henry, I have very much appreciated your discussion of the pharma industry - and thank you also to the others who have contributed, including Robert Cook for generously consenting to be used as a foil.

My husband is in oil and gas finance, and many of the same public misunderstandings of how that industry works apply.

The four horsewomen could be a way of branding AOC as the de facto head of the Democrat shift to apocalyptic socialism. AOC who's often described as having the teeth and smile of a horse. It wouldn't be unlike Trump to get more specific about her appearance. Amusing tweets like this is one of the dividends of having him in the White House.

Why would anyone look at the directions on the shampoo bottle when there a probably lots of youtube videos with hunky guys and cute gals showing you how it's done?

If President Trump consciously intended it or not, he has now made 'the Squad' the face of the Democratic Party. He has held them up for all of America to see for what they are: deranged, America-hating, anti-Semitic, terrorist-coddling, far-left lunatics. They're polling close to the single digits now, almost as low as CNN's ratings.

re Epipen

There are 2 reasons Epipen is expensive

1) regulation - Similar pens that are approved for sale in Europe, Canada, Japan and the rest of the world do not meet FDA standards and are not approved for sale in the US. This could be politics or it could be legit due to higher US safety standards. I do not know.

This goes back to my earlier comment about how much safety do you want? How much are you willing to pay for?

2) Manchin family - For the US, Epipen is made solely by Mylan Pharmaceutical Company of West Virginia. The CEO is Heather Bresch. Her mother is Ms Joe Manchin and head of an organization that lobbies to require Epipens in all public schools. She lobbies Senator Joe Manchin who gets rules past requiring them.

A nice round family business as como se dice en mi barrio. Nice for the Manchin family anyway. Others? Not so much.

The above is from a rather lengthy discussion I was involved in about Epipen 4-5 years ago in another venue. I suspect it is still valid but things could have changed if anyone has newer info.

2) re insulin- There is insulin and there is insulin. They are constantly improving the formula, presentations, means of delivery, methods of manufacture, moving from animal based to synthetic.

Apparently "classic" insulin, is still in production and is fairly inexpensive and available from a number of sources. The expensive stuff is the new stuff. More effective, easier for the body to handle, fewer side effects and so on. Doctor K, you probably have more info. Or maybe I need to go upstairs, get my Kindle and read the section on insulin in your excellent book. (Or maybe I need to get some paying work done instead)

The newer stuff will be more expensive than the classic stuff. But you get better results. How much are those better results worth to you? How much extra benefit would you get from it? That's what determines how "expensive" it is.

Thank you, Jamie.

What we have been saying about fixed, variable and marginal costs applies to the oil industry too and if your husband is in finance, I am sure he knows way more than me. .

Lots of fixed cost in finding the site, negotiating a lease, drilling a well, developing it, regulatory and getting the oil to a refinery. All that has to be priced into into a gallon of gasoline.

Marginal cost of an additional barrel of oil from that well is, comparatively, peanuts.

Re oil: I started watching The Prize the other night. Multipart series of Daniel Yergins book avaialble on Amazon Prime. Alternately interesting and infuriating but overall pretty good.

What you left out was that the cost of locating a site, negotiating a lease, and drilling a well apply even when the well comes up dry. Likewise most of the costs of bringing a drug to market are also borne for drugs that never make it to market. If the drug company cannot recover the costs of their failures from the profits from their successes, then the obvious optimal strategy is to do no research, and no testing of new drugs whatsoever. I don’t think that’s what we want.

The USA pays the highest wholesale prices in the world. Hugh Hewitt has been on this real hard. Goto https://drugpricingtruth.com/ , Citizens for truth in drug pricing. In my wife's case, the Pharmaceutical company had been producing 2 different complementary drugs which were reasonably priced (almost). They now combine the two in a "new" patent, at a much higher price. Playing the patent game. People go to Canada to buy their drugs at substantial discounts. Check the prices for insulin at goodrx.com for example. Trump is tryin to get it done, but BIG PHARMA are the biggest lobbyists in D.C.

Mea culpa. Can I say that I did think about it and meant to put it in and am surprised I did not?

I did talk earlier about the cost of developing drugs that never make it to market and needing to price that into the drugs that do. I also mentions the 15-2 rule 15 failures for 2-3 successes in investing. And Babe Ruth.

You are absolutely right Mike and thanks for pointing out my omission.

IF Canada doesn’t get those prices, they’ll break the patent.

This isn’t that cut and dried.

Plus 325 million vs 35ish million.

We would drain them dry.

Re "the gradual reduction of women's rights." By standards of the "liberal" Hive (and by "liberal" I mean of course "tax-happy, coercion-addicted, power-tripping State fellators"), isn't reduction of rights a good thing? That's what they've been advocating at least as far back as the time when socialists such as John Dewey decided to rebrand socialism with the warmer, fuzzier and more marketable "liberalism."
