"Adnan Syed, subject of 'Serial' podcast, will not get a new trial."

CNN reports.
The [Maryland] Court of Appeals reinstated the conviction by reversing a March 2018 ruling by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. That court had ordered a new trial for Syed, who is serving a life sentence in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend. Adnan had argued that he had ineffective counsel because his former defense lawyer didn't interview an alibi witness.

But in a ruling released Friday, the Maryland Court of Appeals said that because of "the totality of the evidence" against Syed, there was not "a significant or substantial possibility that the jury would have reached a different verdict had his trial counsel presented the alibi witness."...

Good. What a transparent fraud. Hilarious to listen to the NPR chick talk herself into believing he had a shred of credibility.

Only overwhelming evidence could account for the MCoA to make such a presumptive statement about a jury.

Too bad he didn't get the death penalty. Can't be slaying (i.e, murdering) your girlfriend.

Meanwhile, “the Wisconsin State Court of Appeals has agreed to hear a motion to discuss new evidence in the case of Steven Avery.”

In watching the grossly biased first season of Making a Murder and the only somewhat biased second season, I concluded that Avery was likely guilty, and that the state engaged in a criminal conspiracy to plant evidence to ensure a conviction. The interrogation of Avery’s minor nephew and the planting of a ludicrous confession in his developmentally disabled mind is especially loathsome.

The guy who killed Michael Jordan's father won't get a new trial, either.

Now if we can just get the Manning creature back in prison.

I don't know what the phrase "there was not a significant or substantial possibility..." means. I assume the court thought that the probability that he was innocent was not different than zero at some low level.

OTOH, “Serial” kickstarted my love of podcasts. So extra jello for Adnan tonight.

I haven't heard these, but I listened to The RFK Tapes. I was fearful at first that it was going to be a pro-conspiracy take, so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. It used contemporary audio to tell its story, including jailhouse interviews by Sirhan, and at the end, the host had to talk to the guy who got him to do the series, and tell him, sorry, Sirhan did it because of RFK's pro-Israel stance. There was no conspiracy.

A riveting story, and does for the RFK assassination what Posner's "Case Closed" did for JFK's.
