"With the prospect of upward of 20 Democrats running for president in 2020..."

"... Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez announced on Thursday that the party would split up candidates by random selection and host debates on consecutive nights if there were too many candidates.... Perez said he didn’t want any voters to feel that the party was toying with the debate or debate schedule to help out certain candidates. 'The critical imperative is making sure everyone feels their candidate got a fair shot,' Perez said... Perez is taking a different approach from what the Republican Party did during the 2016 primary when it faced a similar surge of candidates. Faced with 17 primary candidates, the GOP decided to have one prime-time debate with the highest polling candidates and another debate on the same night with the lower polling candidates, often referred to as the 'undercard debate.' Those debates attracted fewer viewers and some campaigns felt that the secondary status of their debates was the party tagging them with a loser label."

Reports Politico in "Perez nixes 'undercard' debates for 2020 primary."

"A loser label"? Everyone's starting to sound like Trump.

ADDED: There has to be some cut-off mechanism before that random business, otherwise vanity candidates and various celebrities would have the power to bump the most prominent Senators.

Pro DNC move- write the number of candidates in roman numerals to throw off voters for a bit.

Powerline seems to think that this has potential to hurt the Democrats. I think it's the correct decision, and the decision I would have preferred for the GOP back in 2016.

The one caveat I think I would make is that there should be a minimum polling number to be able to get in the debates. Make it small if you like, 1%. Doesn't matter. You just want to keep out the fringe crazies.

Of course, this is the modern Democrat party, so the crazies aren't only on the fringes anymore.

Did someone here mention the scene with the galactic senate during the Clone Wars?

Clown car, they called it?

People are still talking about how Bernie got cheated by the DNC. They have to do something to make these people think it won't happen again. Even if it will.

I'll take vanity candidates over prominent Senators eight days week. Particularly if the Senator is or was a lawyer.

Matt Sablan বলেছেন...

With the favoritism for poll leaders the moderators usually show, the undercard debate format is the most honest way of doing it. Anyone "randomly" plopped in with say Clinton, Biden and Beto isn't getting heard either.

Matt Sablan বলেছেন...

The DNC doesn't care about Bernie voters. They trust most will come home or not flip. That calculation was right. If Clinton could have been bothered to put a full day campaigning in a few states she'd have been fine. Laziness and hubris cost her more than Berners.

Kind of sad when you have to say you're going to try to appear fair this time around.

If the GOP were smart, they'd fund some vanity candidates, just to spice up the "debates." Let's get to 30!

OTOH, celebrities debating policies would be far more entertaining than listening to yet another senator.

People will only tune in for the debates with Beto.

the party would split up candidates by random selection
as some bad junior officer pointed out; They've Said This Before

Perez said he didn’t want any voters to feel that the party was toying with the debate or debate schedule to help out certain

I'm sure that This IS true; they DON'T want any voters to feel that the party is doing what it is doing... Think of this as KY jelly

"they DON'T want any voters to feel that the party is doing what it is doing"

This, after all, is how "Russia" and Wikileaks "undermined" the elections: they exposed what Hill, Podesta, and the DNC were actually doing.

TreeJoe বলেছেন...

Let me express the likeliness that the debate candidates will be selected randomly....lol.

The front runners and powerhouses will influence who is in their debate, who is standing next to them, and every other detail. They will wield their influence to best position themselves and the DNC will support them.

There is--filing requirements. In the primaries, the party has the right to use whatever system it wants, but I have a problem with using polling--polls aren't votes. Until the actual voting starts, everybody's tied 0-0-0-0-0...

I am looking forward to the mass of Democrat Presidential hopefuls who will be swarming the stages to try to get our attention.

The mental image I have is of a couple of "clown cars" pulling up and they all pile out of the cars and run to get the best spots on the stage. Like at the circus. Maybe they will all run around in circles, chasing each other around the car first!

In reality, the juxtaposition of the Crazy Democrats alongside what passes for Moderate Democrat will be enlightening. The ranting and raving of the really radicals. Exposing their complete lack of logical, rational, real world based thinking will likely turn off the moderate and independent voters from that Clown Show.

All that doesn't matter anyway since the SUPER DUPER DELEGATES will make the decision. Probably already have made the decision who gets to be nominated.

When the handful of people who control the money and the media make up their mind, they'll let us know. Meanwhile, the show must go on.

We have too many debates. Let the campaign trail determine which candidates are credible. Then once there are only 4 left, have a few debates.

"Perez said he didn’t want any voters to feel that the party was toying with the debate or debate schedule to help out certain candidates."

Note that he didn't say that the party won't rig the debate schedule, only that he didn't want voters to know about it.

Wow, I didn't realize until I read the comments that I wasn't the only one to make this point.

The smartest DNC candidates will drop out early. Saving themselves for 2024 against Pence. Stastiscally it’s rare for a president to lose re-election in a 2 way race. Establish themselves as presidential material without having to suffer actually running.

Of course that was Andrew Cuomo’s strategy in 1992 and it didn’t work for him....

This coming race is going to be fun!
