With reference to 1968 and student protest: I am a graduate, Class of 1969, Hornsey College of Art in London. Our student protest in 1968 was non violent, a sit-in of the main building of the college that lasted several months. The end result was pretty much nothing as it was Britain in a culture that 'looks into things officially, then does nothing'.
The protests in France then and now are organised by people whose intent is violence, nothing else. Any legitimate protest can be non violent and directed through the democratic process of politics in a democratic country, which France is.
"The European elites have decided that "democracy" is a system in which the government chooses the voters."
Not so sure how things differ here. The Dems in particular, cheated their asses off to win the House by a larger margin, and to retain as many Senate seats as they could. Race after race, swings after Election Day from the Republican to the Democrat with late arriving votes mostly going their way. And then I saw the results of billionaires dropping large chunks of money in both MT and AZ Senate races, where the TV ads were running better than 2:1 for the Dem candidate - who won. Dinesh D'Sousa went to jail for 5 months for roughly $5k in excess contributions to a college friend who was running for the Senate, while people like Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg drop hundreds of millions with impunity. Crooked Hillary's campaign turned this into an art form, by flushing money through state Dem parties, then back into her campaign, the fatten in identical amounts, the same day, allowing her contributors to quasi-legally contribute >40x the legal limits to her campaign. Meanwhile, social media in the month or two right before the election this year deplatformed aRepublicans and/or conservatives as fast as they could.
When you are paying $7 a gallon against the $2 we are paying, how will you compete with us? Of that seven, five is state confiscation of citizen funds to support the religious beliefs of the ruling class. Once they erected crosses, but now they put up wind farms and solar arrays.
And we pretend that things have changed since 1789.
Prostesting what? All the pictures failed to mention what is going on. A quick word search of 'Paris riots' yielded not much more. Conclusion? Leftist govt policies are confusing the masses. While the policies and implementation are flawless, the masses are too stupid to understand what is truely good for them.
Some more thoughts. Amping up the violence in France are the Muslim immigrants, who are effectively waging Jihad against the French (and other European) natives, to ultimately bring them within the Caliphate. Christiandom has been under siege by Islam for much of the latter's history. Swaths of Paris, and other big Fench cities, are now "no go" zones for the native French, where burning vehicles and assaulting interlopers has become commonplace. And why were the Muslims allowed in, and their violence and barbaric behavior tolerated? As with here, it is the virtue signaling progressive elites pushing this. They gave up their Christianity (or their Judiasm) years ago, and their nationality several decades back. They are citizens of Europe, and now citizens of the world. Which means that they have to virtue signal their progressive bona fides, which includes subsidizing their takeover by violent Muslims, and taxing the heck out of the fuels used outside the big cities, in order to stop AGW, AGCC, or whatever the latest environmentalist scam is.
No go zones? I thought Candidate Trump made that shit up. At least, I remember indignant Europeans and Europhiles in news interviews saying he didn’t know what he was talking about....
For twenty-five years, European governments encouraged diesel engines in cars and trucks because they got better mileage (kilometrage?) -- this was thought to help the environment by conserving fuel.
The policy worked. About half of all vehicles in Europe are diesel-powered.
Belatedly realizing how foolish this was [diesels use less gas but are decidedly dirtier], the new policy is to discourage their use by raising taxes on diesel. This, of course, will hit truckers hardest. But given the large percentage of diesel cars, there is a lot of sympathy for the cause by the public, too.
Christiandom has been under siege by Islam for much of the latter's history.
Christendom has been under siege by Islam for all of the latter's history and much of the former's — and the former (Christianity) is 600 years older than Islam.
Burning cars in Paris is nothing new. In 1984 we had just arrived and were sleeping on the floor of my travelling companion's brother's girlfriend, just downhill from the Montemartre. I heard a crash and a whoosh and saw flickering light in the window. I looked out and just below the window was a car completely engulfed in flames. I asked the girlfriend about it in the morning and she said "they do that all the time". That burned out hulk sat there in the street for the entire 4 days we stayed there, in the middle of Paris.
There are weekly car-becues in Paris, or more specifically in the banlieues around Paris. It's usually Muslim Yoots doing the torching, but anyone can join the fun. As far as the protesters' goals - they aren't dissimilar to the government's/elites' objectives, which are driven by the religion of climate change. They just want somebody else (les riches) to pay for them. And just like climatistas everywhere, they hate the middle classes. Note the sign in one of the photos - Tuons le bourgeoisie. "Let's kill the bourgeoisie" is a sentiment that carries on regardless of the protests of the moment.
Instead of raising fuel prices, if the French really wanted to improve the world, they should be banning fender skirts. The fender skirt is the burkha of the back wheel.
“Christendom has been under siege by Islam for all of the latter's history and much of the former's — and the former (Christianity) is 600 years older than Islam.”
Between the founding of Islam and roughly 1683, Islam kept the pressure in Christiandom, which is coincidentally very those to a millennium. And after that was the great Turkish War, ending in the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699. We had less than three hundred years after that before Islam restarted offensive operations. Of course, the British were fighting Muslims around the periphery of their empire throughout much of that time. But Islam didn’t pose an existential threat to Christianity. Part of that, I think was a result of the increasing corruption of the Byzantine empire. That combined with the Industrial Revolution, where the Christian west jumped out ahead of the amuslim world in their ability to fight wars.
Others above have noted it- the stories you read about this are deliberately obscuring the issue that is driving it- the cost of fuels for motor vehicles in France. Almost no story tells us how much the French are paying in fuel taxes. This is just another example of how corrupt journalism is these days.
Those Parisian Protesters must be "climate deniers". Or worse, CAGW proponents who won't put their monies where their mouths are. Is Tony watching? --- Evers said he is considering increasing the gas tax of 32.9 cents per gallon to pay for roads, but not by as much as Republicans claimed.
“It’s ridiculous,” he said of the notion of quadrupling the gas tax. “Who the hell would, frankly?” But he refused to say how much of an increase he would accept.
The thought crosses my mind that if the “Taxed Enough Already” people had demonstrated the way the French “yellow jackets” are demonstrating in Paris, we might not have needed Trump.

But is it like 1789?
Or like 1830?
Or 1848?
Or 1870?
Or 1958?
We'd all love to see the plan.
There goes the tourist trade.
WTI at $50. Imagine the protests if it was $100. Gas is $2.19 in Omaha.
“It was first prompted by Emmanuel Macron's move to raise the price of diesel fuel in a bid to encourage less polluting cars.” More Green stupidity.

The European elites have decided that "democracy" is a system in which the government chooses the voters.
Obama told you energy prices would necessarily skyrocket. Hillary would be buttfucking us now under the Paris Accords.
Thanks, President Trump!
Another outraged French group demonstrating something will come along shortly and block these protesters from protesting.

Burning cars full of fuel with more fuel reduces the supply of fuel which shifts the supply curve and raises the equilibrium price for fuel higher.

Yah, you have to get past the insanely long scroll of bombed out cars to get an idea if they are for or against. Against right?

The fires put Paris in violation of the Paris Accords. They'll have to buy carbon indulgences from Al Gore or follow Trump's lead and withdraw.
Bruce Hayden,

The French are very conformist.
Until they become very non-conformist.
Good photos in the Daily Mail - although it look like the protests were on a couple streets, and cars - not Paris - were burning.
"Jim" must be saying "I told you so".
The French are revolting.
Oh, also apparently having some riots as well.

Need the the German Panzers to roll into France again. That will restore order. Oh, wait....

Linguini: Which resistance?
Colette: He won't say. Apparently, they didn't win.

All the French have to do is escort the Arabs to Germany and drop them off. France is incompatible with the Moslem religion. Let the krauts have them.
Without the Arab social subsidy, the French would be rich and could afford diesel at $8 a gallon.
Antifa will feel inspired.
European governments encouraged diesel engines in cars and trucks because they got better mileage (kilometrage?) --
Manufacturers also fudged data to prove it for them.
On to the 6th Republic!
We will get it right this time!
I don't have a problem with people burning Citroens. To me it seems right and proper.
Instead of raising fuel prices, if the French really wanted to improve the world, they should be banning fender skirts.
The fender skirt is the burkha of the back wheel.
It's almost amusing how little coverage this is getting in the American media. Macron is still a glamorous hero to that constituency.

The riots themselves, though, are a symptom of the loss of legitimacy of the government. Macron is finished, he just doesn't know it yet.
Reports from the Provinces are that the demonstrations there are not violent as in Paris.
No because it's the commune from 1870, the 68 revolution was near beer, it's the metropole re the countryside

Macron dissed Trump to his face and now Paris is burning. Coincidence? Or did Trump cut a deal with the devil?
There are weekly car-becues in Paris...
If so, who in Paris would leave a car out on the street? Or buy one to drive in Paris?
Brings new meaning to "the City of Lights". Maybe the City of Lightered Cars.
If they're going to fight global warming, the French need to get used to turning off the heat
and sitting in the dark.
If you haven't read it, there is an excellent take on this over at ¡No Pasaran!.
You can read all about it, in English, at France24.
