Brewers vs. Cubs.

A place to talk, in case you, like us, are watching the game.

UPDATE: Win!

Hola. May the home team win. One of Braun's better Wrigley moments in the first.

Bay Area Guy ayon kay ...

Go Brewers! Cuz' they haven't been good since Robin Yount.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

With a win the Brewers have home field through the playoffs. And I and the Mrs have tix.

Go Crew

rehajm ayon kay ...

I have it on with the sound off. I'm Switzerland but can be bought if anyone wants prayers...

M Jordan ayon kay ...

Good at bat for Rizzo. Eating up pitch count.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Nice DP crew

Original Mike ayon kay ...

Sound off here too. I’m up in the Great North Woods and television always sounds jarring to me here.

Is the sound off at Meadehouse?

gspencer ayon kay ...

It was 10am when I, sitting at my assigned desk at Boston-based mega-huge public accounting firm, received a call from an old high school friend. He told me that a customer of his had, just moments earlier, offered my friend four passes to that afternoon's one-game playoff between the Red Sox and Yankees. "Do you want to come along?"

That day was exactly 40 years ago tomorrow.

Watch out, Brewers fans, you might be disappointed.

Watch out, Cubs fans, you might be disappointed.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Yeli mvp!!!!

Bricap ayon kay ...

That stat for Yelich BA with RISP with 2 outs? Was that for real? The number crunchers always say there's no such thing as clutch hitting, but something like that makes me wonder otherwise.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Hell, his teammates just shake their heads..Yount was discussing yesterday. Since the break he's been hitting unconscious. Better off walking him. But please, give him something to hit...

Trumpit ayon kay ...

Let's have some "brewskis" and good cheer!

Yancey Ward ayon kay ...

All such playoffs are important even if both teams are in the playoffs. In addition to avoiding a single game elimination wild card, the winner in the Brewers/Cubs game will have home field advantage, and while not a really major edge, it is still and effective one.

gilbar ayon kay ...

stupid cardinals and their stupid "let's save our win for The Cubs" :(

mezzrow ayon kay ...

That Anthony is a wonderful young man, isn't he?

Mid-Life Lawyer ayon kay ...

Tied! Rizzo, who went 4-4 for the first time ever yesterday. The outfielder never moved it was hit so far. 1-1

Yancey Ward ayon kay ...

Yeah, the Cardinals should have won that wildcard spot- the 4 game losing streak came at the worst time.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Nows our chance

mockturtle ayon kay ...

Go Crew! I fear that, should they win, the fans at Wrigley could get ugly.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Yelich SLG since ASB..770

Yancey Ward ayon kay ...

Cubs fans (when I was in grad school I saw about 10 games a year) are known to be sloppy, angry, happy drunks. You can even buy beer in the ballpark- beer!

The Democrats probably should have asked Kavanaugh if he was Cubs fan.

Clyde ayon kay ...

I'm torn on this one. I don't have a real rooting interest, but I cheer for the players on my Strat-O-Matic team. I have Jhoulys Chacin of the Brewers and Anthony Rizzo and Jesse Chavez of the Cubs on my keeper team, so all of my guys have been involved in this one. I won't have any problems with the other game; I don't have any Dodgers, but I do have Nolan Arenado and Kyle Freeland of the Rockies, so I'm all in on them.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Chacin did his job...nicely

Clyde ayon kay ...

Oh, and I also have Josh Hader of the Brewers... Can't forget about him!

Bricap ayon kay ...

Did something happen to Chacin? Was it about having him avoid the third trip through the lineup?

Jim at ayon kay ...

Yeah, the Cardinals should have won that wildcard spot- the 4 game losing streak came at the worst time.

They lost three out of four to the Dodgers. At home.

Go Blue.

Guildofcannonballs ayon kay ...

Watching YE on TMZ.

Now.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Need something baseball related to take down the tension.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Knebel lights out. BB working well. Next..Hader???

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

SWEEEEET Arcia 3/3 and now at 3rd no outs

JaimeRoberto ayon kay ...

Let's go Oakland!

M Jordan ayon kay ...

Game on the line.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Luv it..

M Jordan ayon kay ...

Brewers will win. Cubs and them will meet again.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Killer pitch

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Hader Jefress

Pedal all the way down

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

The way this season has gone won't be suprised if this goes EI.

mockturtle ayon kay ...

So far, so good.

Clyde ayon kay ...

Haderade!

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

4 strike strikeout...haderaide Dealin

stevew ayon kay ...

Ain’t got no dog in this fight but why is this game necessary? Didn’t these two play each other during the season? Was the season record tied too?

-sw

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Jinxies Clyde

Original Mike ayon kay ...

”Was the season record tied too?”

No. There is no logic to playing this game.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Hard to believe Arcia was sent down to minors to work on his bat.

Apparently they fixed it.

Tomcc ayon kay ...

Since we're revisiting high school hijinks this week- I propose that the good people of Milwaukee rid themselves of that boorish Hader guy. Send him to some appropriately dysfunctional city...like Pittsburgh.

Clyde ayon kay ...

Oh, great. Rizzo vs. Hader. Moc vs. Moc. I hate it when my guys face each other with the game on the line!

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

I can't contain my joy.

Mid-Life Lawyer ayon kay ...

Hader was almost unhittable.

mockturtle ayon kay ...

Yay!!!!!! :-)

Clyde ayon kay ...

Whew! Hader gets a loud out to finish it off. Congrats to the Brewers!

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

I generally avoid MP when the Cubs come. Good luck tomorrow. Maybe see you on Thurs in MKE.

Stoked

Jim at ayon kay ...

Was the season record tied too?

Yes. As were the Rockies and Dodgers.

First time in history there are two Game 163s.

Bricap ayon kay ...

Impressive win for the Brewers. Their bullpen has really come together this year.

PackerBronco ayon kay ...

I haven't been a baseball fan for many years, but it was nice to watch a game without having to constantly go to a rules official to explain what is a penalty and what is not.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

”Yes. As were the Rockies and Dodgers.”

The Cubs won the head-to-head match up this year: 11-8.

I’m happy for you, 320Busdriver.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

"I’m happy for you, 320Busdriver."

Appreciate it!

Yesterday was #29 for us. As she loves the game as much as I, I got the 19 Season and playoff tix last week. Going to be fun. Better than I imagined as it looked like Wild Card for sure last monday..

Matt ayon kay ...

Only thing that could make this season sweeter is if they guaranteed their spot in the playoffs against the Cardinals and took the Division from the Cubs.

Oh, wait...

Gentleman Farmer ayon kay ...

This is completely unfair. The Cubs had a +116 run differential, to the Brewers' +95.

The Cubs won the popular vote.

mccullough ayon kay ...

The Cubs won the head-to-head matchup this year: 11-9.

By the way, the 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers had also won the "season series" against the 1951 New York Giants. But lost the best-of-three game tie-breaker series.

Not that Cubs fans know anything about National League history. In the AL, they only had one game tiebreakers before the start of divisional play-off series. The NL had a best-of-three tie-breaker series.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

”Yesterday was #29 for us.”

Sweet. Our anniversary was Sept. 29.

Jim at ayon kay ...

The Cubs won the head-to-head match up this year: 11-8.

I misunderstood the question.

I look at the standings. Season series means as much as the popular vote. :)

Original Mike ayon kay ...

”The Cubs won the head-to-head matchup this year: 11-9.”

Huh. The thing I’m looking at says 11-8. In any case, the Cubs won the season series. Seems dumb to have this playoff game (and FWIW, I’m a Brewers fan.)

mccullough ayon kay ...

The only ever season record and "season series" tie was between the 1948 Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox. They both finished the season 96-58 and were 11-11 in the "season series."

Cleveland won the one-game tie-breaker.

mccullough ayon kay ...

Original Mike,

Tie-breaker games are considered regular season games, not playoff games.

The Brewers won today's tie-breaker game, which was the 20th regular season meeting between the two teams.

Bay Area Guy ayon kay ...

Way to go, Brewers!

Clyde ayon kay ...

Actually, winning the head-to-head matchup during the season determined the location of the tiebreaker game. Had the Brewers won the head-to-head matchup during the season, the game today would have been played at Miller Park.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Is anyone here suggesting that the tie should have been broken by looking to the season record between the 2 teams? That would be dull!! We had a very exciting extra game, and the Brewers have beaten the Cubs in the more recent games.

Jim at ayon kay ...

Had the Brewers won the head-to-head matchup during the season, the game today would have been played at Miller Park.

Yes. The Dodgers went 12-7 vs the Rocks and are hosting.

whiskey ayon kay ...

Wow! Congrats!

mccullough ayon kay ...

Not only would it be dull, it would go against National League tradition.

The "season series" never determined the winner of two teams tied at the end of the 154 game or 162 game season. Never in either league.

The National League had a three-game tie-breaker series for fuck's sake.

Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round the World" was in the third and deciding game of the 1951 tiebreaker series. If the team that had won the "season series" was the automatic champion then that series would have never happened.

Fucking Cubs fans are ahistorical idiots.

CWJ ayon kay ...

320Busdriver,

My wife and I had the same situation in KC in 2015 (tickets for the whole playoffs). It's a glorious ride if they keep on going.* Good luck to the Brewers and you as well.

* - The only downside was that the Royals won the WS in 5. Don't get me wrong, I wanted that win, but it's the only scenario where the home team in the WS sees fewer games than the loser. It was doubly strange because of delays and extra innings, game one didn't end until the next day. We laughed with the people and ushers around us saying see you later today as we left. So you see, not only did we only get 2 WS games, but in a way both were played on the same day.

Inga...Allie Oop ayon kay ...

Our Brewers did it!

CWJ ayon kay ...

"Hard to believe Arcia was sent down to minors to work on his bat."

Moustakas was an embarrassment at the plate until he got sent down, sometimes it's the right thing to do. Did Arcia come back batting on the same side of the plate. Moose came back throwing right but batting left. Never could remember whether that was the case before he was sent down.

Tommy Duncan ayon kay ...

I may have to find my (Radio Shack) pocket transistor radio and (single) earplug to listen to the catcher in the wry call the playoffs.

Original Mike ayon kay ...

”Is anyone here suggesting that the tie should have been broken by looking to the season record between the 2 teams? That would be dull!!”

I am. It’s called earning it. I used to think that meant something.

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

Sweet. Our anniversary was Sept. 29.

Happy Anniversary to you too/two!!

stevew ayon kay ...

That's correct Original Mike, and the way pretty much every other sport I can think of settles such ties in the standings.

-sw

mccullough ayon kay ...

The Brewers earned it. They beat the Cubs today. At Wrigley.

Just like the Cardinals beat the Dodgers back in 1946. And the Giants beat the Dodgers back in 1951. And the Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Braves in 1959. And the Giants beat the Dodgers in 1962. And the Astros beat the Dodgers in 1980.

National League history and tradition.

Cubs fans can't take it. Fucking whiners.

mccullough ayon kay ...

Hillary Rodham Clinton is a Cubs fan. How she learned to become a fucking whiner.

That sounds like sooo much fun, and not too long ago either.

We are lucky to have gotten LoCain. We will need his experience going forward.

Not sure if our hostess posted it, but Yelich wrote a nice piece about his experience with the brewers so far. Here :
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/christian-yelich-brewers-playoffs

Imagine Antanasio picking you up in his jet with Braun, then stopping in AZ to pick up Uecker and Yount for the ride to Fanfest in Milwaukee.

Lets Goooooo!!!

320Busdriver ayon kay ...

The above link has an embedded video of Cain bailing Yelich out of a rundown at second. Funniest part is watching the Cubs infield. Abbott & Costello like

Original Mike ayon kay ...

I’m a Brewers fan. As I said above.

LOL! As if you know the difference between a ball and a strike. You never said peep on any baseball thread Althouse ever posted until it looked like the Crew would get into the postseason.

Your fandom is as fake as everything else about you.

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil ayon kay ...

Althouse wrote: "Is anyone here suggesting that the tie should have been broken by looking to the season record between the 2 teams? That would be dull!"

I argued with a Cubs fan about this yesterday. Not only would it be dull, but it would be bending the rules of baseball to favor one team. In the regular season, a W is a W. A 10 run blowout of the Padres counts no more and no less than a walkoff win in 14 innings against the Yankees. Imagine weighting regular wins based on how good the opposing team is - how ridiculous!

The Brewers won the division title because they won 1 more game than the Cubs did. End of story.

It is thrilling. I had crushes on Yount and Molitor back in the day. I well remember the excitement of the '82 season. Such moments for Brewer fans are few and far between - I'm hungry for more wins!

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

If the season series was a tie breaker the 2 teams would have headed into the last weekend with different stakes, Chicago knowing it only needed to get to a tie, and Milwaukee alone tasked with getting to better than a tie. That would have been very annoying.
