One thing I've noticed about these mass killers is that they post a lot on social media. That's a much more reliable indicator of homicidal tendencies than political affiliations. Those who have posted more than five entries in the past twenty four hours should consider this.

At long last, it seems that someone has fixed his hair! Look and tell me the combover crisis hasn't finally been averted. Has this been going on for some time?

Trump's hair has been a surprise to me.

I'd have bet $1,000 before he became POTUS that it was fake, fake, fake.

But now, having seen it in rain, wind, sunshine, snow, hail, and dark of night...

It's really HIS Hair.

I dunno rc, if Jimmy Fallon mussing his hair for him on late night TV didn't convince you, you're hard to reach.

Yeah, I forgot about him.

Twitter is still in business carrying The Guardian and Progressives' message targeting "white girls next door". A message of overt racism broadcast by mainstream media and endorsed by left of center groups.

Same crazy hairdo, just freshly trimmed and gelled into position. Trump looks so much better in photoshops with normal hairdo. Wife and kids must have tried to get him to switch and he is obviously image conscious. So I always wonder if he has a Sampson complex, like he will lose his Trumpness if he breaks down and gets a more standard haircut.

The first two posts tonight point the way to a very important topic. Not just aprons, but the possible return of the rats. Coffee mugs? The possibilities are endless. Buying Althouse goods, using the Althouse portal at Amazon. And yeah, I thought Trumps hair looked different. What did he do? Kinda looks, oh, normal.

My wife and I voted yesterday. Ted Cruz, of course. The lines are very long at all the polling places in Central Texas, and the MSM reports records are being broken all across the state. I don't know what sort of conclusions to draw from these reports, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Voting records are being broken all across Texas, not just in blue strongholds like Austin.

He is more brand conscious than image conscious. The hair is part of the brand. He'd trademark it if he could. ( The hair itself, not just an image of it )

I will vote on election day. Kind of sick of being hectored by the Republicans, for sure. "You haven't returned your ballot yet!" Wait a minute, I never requested a ballot! I have decided to vote against everybody who makes signs to tug at my heartstrings.

Y'all ever see "Once Upon a Time in the West" by Sergio Leone circa 1968? Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, Claudia Cardinale - damn fine flick. Epic, I'd say.

Yes. My second favorite western. So weird to see Henry Fonda as a cold blooded killer. The music is fantastic.

I feel like the umpire was gaslighting Kimbrel, calling a lot of what were clearly strikes balls, and putting him in tough spots.

Game after game after game this year (and for the last several) this inane obsession with relievers has totally blown up in baseball's face. No lead is ever safe no matter how awesome one pitcher has been because he will invariably be yanked regardless.

It really does take a lot of the enjoyment out of the game.

“Once Upon a Time in the West” has one of my favorite bits of dialog at the beginning.
Snaky: ...looks like we're shy one horse.
Harmonica: You brought two too many.
Charles Bronson being Charles Bronson......

Bricap said...

Some great baseball these past two nights. I stayed up through the marathon last night. Definitely some amazing moments in that one, enough to keep me awake.

I don't think either bullpen had much tonight, as they were spent from last night. I don't blame the ump for the Kimbrel adventure tonight. He was not locating like he usually does, and that homer he gave up, he really hung that breaking ball.

Eovaldi last night, what else can be said? Still hitting 101 on the gun at the end, too.

Yes, I saw Machado run over the heel, too. I do not want to see the Cubs sign him.

Once Upon a Time in the West, my favorite Western. The opening scene with the fly, Henry Fonda tall handsome and evil, and a beautiful woman making good. Even if she took a complimentary pat on the butt.

Epic film. Meant to be seen on the big screen in the dark.

You need to watch it three or four times, though, to understand the story.

[Donald J. Trump] Watching the Dodgers/Red Sox final innings. It is amazing how a manager takes out a pitcher who is loose & dominating through almost 7 innings, Rich Hill of Dodgers, and brings in nervous reliever(s) who get shellacked. 4 run lead gone. Managers do it all the time, big mistake!

Reditors respond

Mark said...

That's what I'm saying.

rcocean said...

Saw the WS game was close going into the 9th inning, and gave it a look. Before I knew it was 9-4!

Experts said the Dodgers couldn't hang with the Red Sox.

Guess they were right.

rcocean said...

Assume Starting pitcher was pulled after 7 because that's their normal practice.

But Trump has a good point. Why not keep him in, when he's going good?

rcocean said...

They need to put pitchers on the clock! Too much time wasted between pitches.

Bricap said...

I get why it happens. It's about a starter not facing a lineup for the third time in a game. I have a hard time believing this should be standard, but that's the thinking. After the Dodgers tagged Rodriguez in his third time through the lineup, did that reinforce that line of thinking in Roberts' mind as Hill started through the lineup for the third time? I don't think Cora wanted to pull Rodriguez, given the marathon last night. I doubt Roberts wanted to take Hill out, either, but I'm thinking that scared him into doing it.

Story from 2016 --

Ross Stripling ... the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rookie right-hander, had pitched 7 1/3 hitless innings in his major league debut Friday night at San Francisco. . . .
Then, after Stripling issued a one-out walk, new Dodgers manager Dave Roberts made the gutsy move: He removed Stripling after 100 pitches and replaced him with Chris Hatcher, who gave up a two-run homer to Trevor Brown that tied the game at 2.

Even pulls a guy throwing a no-hitter. How many times does it have to blow up before they will learn?

I'm old enough to remember when a pitcher could pitch an entire game!!!

rcocean said...

Average pitches in a MLB game =150.

take an extra 8 seconds per pitch thats = 1200 extra seconds.

Which is 20 minutes added to the game time.

Mark said...

You gotta dance with the guy who brung ya'. Otherwise you're just pissing and crapping all over your starters.

Sergio Leone made a kinda, sorta "sequel" in 1983 - "Once Upon in America" with Robert DeNiro and James Woods. A sprawling, epic gangster movie, not a Western, but similar big themes.

rcocean said...

1974 Complete games pitched of total games = 28%

2014 = 2.4%

rcocean said...

Mindlessly relieving a good starter after X number of innings - is just as bad as mindlessly keeping them in no matter what.

Bricap said...

The demise of the complete game can be tied to the demise of the young and promising starting rotation of the 1980 Oakland A's that Billy Martin ran into the ground. 100 pitches became a soft limit afterwards.

My mother had a theory about relief pitchers: That their contract stipulates that they play x number of innings per week. Not sure if she was being facetious but we were both dismayed at the seventh or eighth inning hook when the starting pitcher was pitching well. At least when Felix [Hernandez, Seattle] was pitching his perfect game in 2012 the manager had the good sense to leave him in.

National League managers have a tendency to overnanage games (except for Bruce Bochy)

Because pitchers have to be in the batting lineup National League managers have a tougher job. They need to do more switches. But this can get out of hand. Rich Hill was pitching great. The Dodgers were up 4-0 with one out in the seventh.

The bullpen had pitched 12 innings the night before. There was no reason to take out Hill. Every reason to keep him in.

Or what Ralph Houk did to Mark Fidrych in 1976: 31 games, 29 games started, 24 complete games, 250.1 IP... And Fidrych didn't come up until May. He had a Cy Young-caliber Rookie of the Year season, and was never the same afterward. Exhibit A in how not to handle young pitchers.

Correction: Fidrych debuted on 4/20/76, making a pair of relief appearances before making his first start on 5/15. He made another start ten days later on 5/25, and then Houk plugged him into the rotation based on his good performances. The baseball sites don't have any pitch count data from that far back, but we do know that Fidrych faced 996 batters and pitched 250 innings in what amounts to 3/4 of a season, 4-1/2 months. Particularly unconscionable from the modern perspective is that Houk rode Fidrych into the ground in a 74-87 fifth place campaign. We know better now.

For the math above:
150 pitches per side, per game

So 40 minutes of game time if every pitch takes an unnecessary 8 extra seconds between pitches.

Aprons made by me will be received by everyone on my Christmas list this year. Vintage-styled ones for the females, maybe with some quilting detail. Outdoor-grilling type for most of the men, although at least one will be getting a chef's apron for his new career path. Practical. Underappreciated. And certainly not inexpensive to make.

That clip is so sad. She is excited to meet her new husband, but he is not there. She is confused and finally decides to take a buggy to the mans farm.

There she finds the reason he wasn't at the station. A damned Fonda!

I always feel sad watching her trail off at the end, and that horseman whipping that poor horse who wants only to remain in the city. It knows what lies ahead, and want nothing to do with it.

The song describes the love she has for him; vain hope for his return; and makes a beautiful layer to the scene.

P.S. I think "Once Upon a Time in the West" will always be my favorite movie, and all the actors are at the top of their form. The photography and scenes are packed with quality. The music is wonderful throughout.

My second favorite is "Baby Doll", a black and white film, that leaves me with such disgust and a bad taste, that you know it was a great picture, but an ugly premise, that made the audience thank God they lived in a northern city.
