"Saturday Night Live" does a fantastic cold open with Matt Damon as Brett Kavanaugh.

I've watched this and I still have not read what anyone is saying about it, so let me sketch out a few thoughts before I read what people are saying.

1. Matt Damon was great. For a moment there, I thought he was channeling Chris Farley, with the idea of raging and amping up the rage, but that association left my mind as Damon continued and used a lot of the details observed in the hearing: turning the pages angrily, drinking water, sniffling.

2. Yesterday, I was predicting that "SNL" would do a Kavanaugh cold open, and I pictured lines like "I like beer, do you like beer," and I got them.

3. The character of the prosecutor Rachel Mitchell was very well observed, conveying apt criticisms that I myself have about how she was used. The SNL castmember, Aidy Bryant, did a nice job of playing the bland professional who found herself in a place where she didn't belong, asked to do something she wouldn't be permitted even to begin to do.

4. The Lindsey Graham part was a complete disaster. Kate McKinnon will get credit for suppressing any vanity and dressing as a man, but there were 2 things wrong. First, Graham was the loudest, angriest person in the room last Thursday, so McKinnon needed to top Matt Damon, and Damon set a high baseline. McKinnon has a less powerful voice than Damon, unsurprisingly, so the loudness may have been physically impossible, but she also couldn't begin to match him in conveying intense anger. Second, the writers gave her a script premised on the idea that Graham is a gay man. Some of the lines were like lines in a dating ad, saying he's 5'11" and "uncut," and the part ended with "This right now, this is my audition for Mr. Trump's cabinet and also for a regional production of 'The Crucible,' and let me tell you, queen, I was good." Queen???!!! Did I mishear that? I replayed it 10 times, and we turned on the closed captioning, which simply omitted the word (after pausing, so apparently the closed captioner didn't know what to do).

I love the subtext. Matt Damon had to move out of the country because he was a Harvey Weinstein enabler. Now he’s trying to get back into the good graces of The Left.

Well done, Matt. But you Are Still Complicit.

So, prof, your Princess and the Pea suffering in childhood led you to a lifelong commitment to Marxist feminism and advocating that the state force the creation of the New Man and New Woman.

And Kavanaugh is a whiny, ridiculous white man for objecting to being accused of gang rape, drugging women and dry humping in his youth.

Got it.

What a ridiculously soft, spoiled woman you are.

I can't and I won't.
Unless they also parodied Ford, I won't watch it.

(the week McCain died, they replayed his episode from 2002 and it was painful to see how funny SNL used to be, and how it is just another reiteration of weekly talking points now. the same we hear from everyone else)

There was potentially more actual humor to be had in parodying the 6-year old voice and bizarre child-like demeanor of the 51-year old Ford. But we must take the "victim" very seriously and never doubt that she is disingenuous. While the likely real victim in this case has not only had his reputation destroyed, but must be mocked and ridiculed. Did I get that right?

Shouting Thomas said...

Bob Dylan faked the suffering when he was a kid, too, prof. You've got that in common with him.

His "rambling, gambling man" and Woody Guthrie commie act was all fake. He was the son of a prosperous shopkeeper in Duluth.

No wonder you love his act. He must be the pioneer of upper middle class and rich kids affecting suffering.

As opposed to thinking it "fantastic" when SNL does a comedy sketch that mocks a man accused of attempted rape thirty years ago, from an accuser who can't remember time or place or have any witnesses that support her story, and then has his life torn apart by opportunists and porn lawyers and women who couldn't go to the college they wanted.

2. “did a nice job of playing the bland professional who found herself in a place where she didn't belong, asked to do something she wouldn't be permitted even to begin to do.”

Rachael Mitchell had a tough job because of the time restrictions and format, but she failed at her task. She had to cross CBK on the important facts about time, date and location along with the 100% certainty of identification. CBK gave her a clue when she wouldn’t name the guy at GT Prep she was dating. And then we learned that Wisconsin Law alum Katz probably violated the Code of Professional Responsiblity by not conveying to her client the Senate’s offer to fly to CA. to take her testimony in private.

3. Why didn’t SNL mock the Woman with Two Front Doors? Easy target because she’s a lying loon.

Sorry, Althouse. You are losing me on this.

There is something so far off reality with Ford that she should be inspected down to her core. Why doesn’t her family offer her public support?. Who has she been for the pst twenty years? Is this )a “recovered” memory or has she been brooding about it for 36 years? What did she say about it to her friends? You mean that a teen-aged girl who wasn’t raped wouldn’t tell her friends about something like this? Did she have any friends, this high school cheerleader?

This whole thing smells to high heaven.

Ann, I agree it would have been inappropriate to mock Dr. Ford because she is a woman credibly claiming to be a victim of an attempted rape. But I think it was inappropriate to mock Judge Kavanaugh because he is a man who is credibly arguing that he is not guilty of this alleged crime.

If SNL wanted to be fair (and I know they did not), they could have either left this alone for a week or they could have mocked the Republican and Democrat Senators and left Kavanaugh and Ford alone.

As someone who grew up near GP, went to a nearby girls school and partied practically every night in summer of '82, I find it possible that both sides are telling the truth as they remember it. This is a complicated and sad moment in the history of our government. That, combined with the absurdity of a 53 year-old having to answer for things written in their high school yearbook, screamed for some sort of comedic treatment. The SNL skit could have been more balanced, of course. But I agree with AA that making fun of a fragile witness whom even the Rs agreed had experienced some sort of trauma isn't going to get a lot of laughs.

Yeah, Cookie, that’s the party line, along with you should never ask a woman what she was wearing or how many drinks she had had. But most prosecutors have moved beyond that thinking. As always, it is always 1965 in your world.

What we have here is an uncorroberated and unverifiable report of a drunken assault that occurred at some unknown place at some unknown time 36 years ago in the company of people who don’t recall it that just happens to be raised when the alleged perpetrator (who has a spotless record of public service) is nominated for the Supreme Court.

Eleanor said...

Brett Kavanaugh is very likely to become a Supreme Court Justice even with all of this crap being thrown at him. Ann Althouse isn't. The pinnacle of her career is as a professor at a second tier law school. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's a great accomplishment, but if a woman in her 60s is still whining she wasn't encouraged to take calculus, it's not as impressive as 18 year old Ann had hoped for. A little jealousy might need to be factored into her response to SNL. I'm not sure how taking calculus would have made succeeding at law school easier. I've taken 6 semesters of it, and while the word "law" does come up now and then, I don't thing the word "court" is ever attached to it. FTR, I did watch the clip. I think a skit about Ford had the potential for being better because it would have been stepping on a comedy 3rd rail. SNL is not supposed to be "Mister Roger's Neighborhood".

"That doesn't help. I mean, could we just ask the airline to put another front door on the plane? Because maybe I'd feel better if the plane had TWO front doors..."

"You just need to picture a happy place while on the plane, Christine, a place where you have been and things were wonderful. Can you do that?

"Actually, I'm not good with memories..."

"It's okay, Christine: the happy memory doesn't need to have a specific time or place."

"It doesn't?"

"Of course not. You don't even have to remember the year it happened, or how you got there, or how you left."

"That's good. (shifts to serious voice)Because basic memory functions, and, also just the level of norepinephrine and epinephrine in the brain, that sort of, as you know, encodes-- that neurotransmitter—encodes memories into the hippocampus, so the happy-related experience is kind of locked there, whereas other details kind of drift.”

"Yeah: you might want to tone that down a bit..."

(back to little girl voice) "Oh...okay..."

"Anyway, the time on the flight will give us a chance to go over your testimony again."

"That's good, because I think I remember a new detail!"

"Christine! What did I tell you about new details?"

"That's right. 'Whatever I do, don't add any new details to my story. It can only get me in trouble'."

"I REALLY need you to concentrate on not remembering, Christine..."

"You know, I really AM scared of flying..."

"That's good. I like a story when it's true, it helps shore up the trickier parts."

"But my story IS true! Don't you believe me?"

"Well, to be honest, I don't concern myself with little details like that. What's important is that America wants to believe you."

"They do?"

"Yes. And you can't let them down, Christine. America needs to believe you were almost raped..."

"But I WAS almost raped..."

"Good, good: keep that up. But remember --"

"I know, I know:'Whatever I do, don't add any new details to my story. It can only get me in trouble'."

"Exactly, Christine. Exactly."

So watching SNL is like watching a comedy show in Soviet Russia. Yes, we can laugh at it and discuss it later at the water cooler using double speak. But we know its true purpose.

Everyone knows double speak is going on....

"I agree it would have been inappropriate to mock Dr. Ford because she is a woman credibly claiming to be a victim of an attempted rape."

Remind me of the credible part again. Was it not knowing the day, month or year this occurred? Was it crossing out "early 80's" in her polygraph statement, leaving only a decadal timeframe? Was it scrubbing her entire social media profile? Was it being unable to identify the location of the alleged event? Was it that the entire accusation is based on a recovered memory?

There's not one single element of her story that is credible. Nothing.

Or perhaps I missed the subtle, unusual self-deprecation, implicitly calling BS on the cruel neutrality BS and absurdly invoking That's Not Funny after having mocked the era of That's Not Funny. If so, then That's Funny!

Anyway, it must have been funny fun to see one of Weinstein's enablers make fun of a mean man who at some point somewhere somehow sorta-raped, though not rape-raped, not that anyone knew about it at the time or could testify to it now, a poor sister who is so traumatized that she forgot about it for 30 years, funneled the accusation to a congresswoman with the help of partisan lawyers, and now as "Dr." does her best imitation of a helpless little girl, just to stand up for all sisters with her courageous display of Agency, which is not to be made fun of, considering that it would call into question the very premise of feminist politics of resentment.

In 2018, she finally acted, but we don't know who prompted her to act. She wrote an unsworn letter to Sen. Feinstein, making her allegation, gave it to a Democrat Congresswonan (Anna Eshoo), and asked that it be kept confidential.

All of which reminds me of a Clint Eastwood line, other than the Gran Torino reference in that SNL cold open:

I wanted to show that you could do a different take without blasting the woman in question as a liar.

In the riff I have her asserting the truth of her story, and her lawyer not giving a damn because the truth isn't important, only the accusation is.

And it makes implicit that this is bread & circuses for a willing crowd:

"Yes. And you can't let them down, Christine. America needs to believe you were almost raped..."

Sure, the riff could stand a polish -- I am not a professional -- I wrote it in fifteen minutes as an experiment. But I think there are ways the subject can be approached without the vaudeville of Damon shotgunning a beer as the big comedic payoff.

I know I'm piling on and repeating what's already been said several times here already, but, damn, this is an obscene level of obtuseness and bias.

Apparently tragedy is a woman not being protected and honored as a sacred victim upon her alleging sexual assault, no matter how implausible the allegation and full of holes the testimony and evidence; comedy is a man having his career, reputation, and family destroyed by allegations of sexual assault, no matter how implausible the allegation and full of holes the testimony and evidence.

A few years back, I remember thinking it peculiar when you treated with po-faced sobriety the obvious fantasy bullshit that was the UVA rape story. Just assumed that you were doing your "cruel neutrality" shtick in that first post you put up on the topic. Creative trolling, as it were, to see what commenters had to say about it. Ii have always thought that the art student turned law professor was unusual and totally refreshing. The whole Meade adventure reinforced my impression of an independent spirit who knew what was impotant to her. The expressive personality comes through loud and clear. You seem to have had a great life.

So, I take it that your principal problem is the sense of entitlement that surrounds Kavanaugh and the Supreme Court. Yeah, in my law school there was a special seminar for students deemed by the faculty to merit consideration for Supreme Court clerkships, a sheep and goats division for sure. And I think the self-described 17 year old Kavanaugh was kind of a jerk-what’s all this fascination with beer? Grow up!

But no one deserves what Kavanaugh is getting. And he has an adult pattern of doing exactly what would have encouraged women like you. And Ford? Where did she come from? We are supposed to embrace her tears when she has perpetrated an ambush of epic proportions. What she is doing is really bad.

If you want a comedy sketch that mocks a woman who fabricates an attempted rape with the help of her DNC enablers, I am sure it will be a blast, but we can't go there because women never lie about these things.

Despite Ann's (dubious) legal training she is absolutely sure that CBF is a victim of assault despite tons of inconsistencies, convenient memory lapses (i.e., lying), not a shred of corroborating evidence, and elaborate preparation of the narrative (e.g., the fear of flying, scrubbing social media, fear for her life, etc).

Ann shows us her open minded side by suggesting that Kavanagh (the nerdy high achieving Cub Scout) might not have been the assaulter. But someone molested this woman and it's likely to be that guy who portrays himself beyond reproach because ...

because ... Men do bad things and women never lie. Because he was a little more privileged than me. Because my career was derailed by the inability to go to a private college and take some of the courses I wanted to take because I am a woman, etc. etc.
