Seeing other people as toxic.

I'm reading a piece in The Paris Review that was published in June 2017 because I was looking for a David Sedaris thing that had the word "horse" in it. Read the previous post to see what I was looking for, but this June 2017 piece does have "horse" in it. David Sedaris's father calls him "Horse's ass." But it's a great piece. I just want to show you the ending. The whole thing is worth reading — it's about Sedaris's very negative reaction to the election of Donald Trump — but this is the part I want to talk about:
On Inauguration Day, I am in Seattle. Late in the afternoon, my old friend Lyn sends me a photo of an anti-Trump sticker someone found in Japan. It’s cleverly designed: three peaks that on second glance turn out to be Trump sandwiched between two Klansmen. I want to write back and say, Ha, but instead, as a joke, I respond, “Dear Lyn, I’m sorry you’re so opposed to change, or too small-minded to move past your narrow assumptions. In the future, I’d appreciate your keeping things like this to yourself. David”

A minute later, I send a follow-up email that says, “Just kidding.” And it bounces back, as do the next three emails I send. She’s blocked me! I realize. After thirty-eight years of friendship!

I go to bed that night and lie awake, worried that she’s telling everyone I’m a Trump supporter. The news will spread and by morning I’ll be ruined. But it was just a joke, I say to myself in the dark room. A horrible, horrible joke.
Of course, Sedaris is completely anti-Trump, and he doesn't deserve to be excluded by those who are doing this kind of excluding. But he's taking on the position of a person who is rendered a nonperson because he's a Trump supporter. I don't know if his story is true, because "Lyn" must have known him enough to know he's capable of deadpan humor and because how could anyone not want to maintain a direct line to David Sedaris? But whether it's true or made up, he chose in the end to highlight the problem of interpersonal alienation, and I think it's important when even those who hate Trump can see how much of a problem that is.

I know people in Madison who would say some things about Trump that are not entirely hostile but they feel that they can't, because they'd become pariahs. They'd lose all their friends. So, they go along and do the censorship they think their life depends on.

Can I apply for some for my two great uncles that died in the Civil War? One died after a wound at Vicksburg and the other died of measles in camp.

The older one left a wife and two kids.

The younger was 18.

What do you think appropriate reparations would be ?

You may enjoy the politicization of sports and talking about LeBron James, or the latest political tweet/stuff, with your friends, family or acquaintances. Your family and friends must enjoy talking about politics at weekend parties.

No. I don't. And we don't. We never bring it up.

But don't blame Trump for bringing politics into sports when he's simply responding to those who initiated it.

Want politics and sports separate? Good. So do I. Take it up with those who couldn't resist shoving Baracketology down our throats for eight years.

And lest you forget, BLM and the kneeling started under the previous Administration. But apparently it wasn't political then.

Money for nothing? Since I was last here I've broken a bunch of bones, had to almost kill a man, and barely got away with my own life before I finally landed on my feet - and I've stayed broke the whole time - how's that compare to your life? And mine isn't unusual, so consider that before you decide it's so cushy to be born here. It's not:

Whites are winning a war of attrition against justice in this country, and have been since white kids kicked Indian skulls through the streets of New York. I'm older now. I always knew the score. We die out and there's no problem left. Just y'all and Candace, sneering at us about "the plantation" and wondering aloud why we don't do better in schools with no grass, teachers with no credentials, and a country with no compassion for us. Charming. It can be a sad and wicked place, these United Staes, but - like capitalism - it's the best we're gonna get.

I remind my "brothers" of that all-the-time.

You, President Pee Pee Tape? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Hillary and you curse the Obama Get Out The Vote Effort. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that Hillary's poorly-run campaign, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my pointing out of civility bullshit, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me pointing out 63 million Americans voted for Trump. You need me pointing out 63 million Americans voted for Trump. We use words like "post", "comment", "civility". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very truth that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and hit my Amazon link. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a keyboard, and start a blog. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

Because our host has yet again mentioned David Sedaris in a post, I finally decided to go figure out who this guy is and to hopefully learn why Ann is so interested in him. The Wikipedia entry for him says this in the first sentence: He "is an American humorist, comedian, author, and radio contributor...". Got it? Humorist and Comedian - first and second. How is it then that poor Lyn failed to understand that he was joking?

And I still can't figure out why Ann is so enamored with him. I'd go listen to his stuff but we live in the age of That's Not Funny, so no.

" I just want reparations, too."

Serious questions. I'm not trying to fluff off the past. I'm being logical about the present.

1. How do you determine who has to pay reparations? What about my great grandparents who came from Wales in 1890 and Ireland in the 1880's. They had nothing to do with slavery. They were mining coal and growing potatoes. My other distant ancestors who fought and died to end slavery and those of my family that were Quakers since the 1600's and participated in the underground railroad, at their own peril, in Indiana, helping slaves escape? Do we get a pass if we have Greek or Roma in our genes?

2. How do you determine who GETS paid? Just anyone and everyone of color? People who have immigrated from Haiti in the 1900's long after slavery? Immigrated from Kenya? People who What if the person of "color'" is are part white? Partial payments based on skin tone depth and/or genetic composition? Are we going to use the paint chip or one drop of blood theory of the past?

3. Where does the money come from for reparations? Tax everyone? Only tax those who have a history of being slave owners 150 years ago?. Just white people? More paint chips I guess. Exempt Mexicans? Chinese? Muslims who had a big historical part in the slave trade? 50% tax for those who are half white/half black. Perhaps they should get 50% reparations for the half black genes? That would even out nicely. Pay half/get half.

4. How are we going to prove any of this to determine who, how much etc.

It was a terrible, horrible, moral sin, and a lingering wrong that continues to echo in today's society. HOWEVER, I don't think there is any monetary way to make it right or correct the past without angering and inflaming a lot of people who had nothing to do with slavery.

Sometimes when you attempt to fix things, without thinking through the consequences you create a bigger quagmire.

Individualism seems to be off-putting a lot of people these days, on the so-called Left as well as the so-called Right, or at least the Alt Right.

I've had shocked-looking people say, "You actually supported TRUMP???!!" You know, they're shocked because I'm educated and can speak in complete, grammatical sentences. I usually answer, "Reluctantly," and when they say, "But WHY???!!!" I give 'em the ol' Statist Scale--aka the Coercion Meter--which I've explained here in the past: 0 to 10, 0 being perfect libertarian anarchism, 10 being perfect tyranny, and 6 to about 9 being what I call "the State-f*cker Zone," where one finds Obama, Hillary, etc. I ask them where Trump falls on that scale, and if he's higher on the scale than Hillary. That pretty much shuts them up, because statists don't like to own their statism.

OK, let's do it. Provided that:

2. Blacks pay reparations to the offspring of white Union veterans, higher $$ for casualties, who liberated them.

3. Not a penny from people who immigrated after 1865. Not a penny to people who immigrated after 1865. Appropriate discounts for people of mixed heritage.

4. Afterward, not a word about slavery in any context other than school history, for any reason. Immediate imprisonment or expulsion for any violations.

“1. How do you determine who has to pay reparations?”

I like when whites ask undereducated blacks questions like this. It shows such good faith. Am I supposed to figure this out on Google, or what? Come on, DBQ, there are viable formulas for figuring this out. There were for others, there are for blacks. But the government pays, not individuals, if that’s what you mean.

“2. How do you determine who GETS paid?”

I’d *start* with official records, family histories, DNA testing and the Mormon project, but that’s just me. America’s a young country, so these aren’t unfathomable mysteries.

“3. Where does the money come from for reparations?”

The U.S. Treasury.

“4. How are we going to prove any of this to determine who, how much etc.”

You’re repeating yourself - not a good sign.

“It was a terrible, horrible, moral sin, and a lingering wrong that continues to echo in today's society. HOWEVER, I don't think there is any monetary way to make it right or correct the past without angering and inflaming a lot of people who had nothing to do with slavery.”

You can’t make it ALL right - but we can repair some of it. And letting blacks know we’re seriously citizens - after 400 years of being here - would help on the football field, I think.

“Sometimes when you attempt to fix things, without thinking through the consequences you create a bigger quagmire.”

I think of the consequences: the end of a family argument, the ability of all Americans to get this timeline in our heads, collectively, so whites don’t sound silly talking about “a long time ago” to people, just arrived yesterday into the modern world, but who’s fractured reality still stretches back to before Europe flourished. Blacks, holding something that says whites, our country, this world, isn’t really cruel, but a victim of it’s own success - part of which consisted of using us for roadkill. There’s LOTS of consequences I can see from this. And nothing to fear, but fear itself.

Not trying - really trying - will always be worse.

The entire idea of reparations is a quandary and a quagmire.

BTW....the US Treasury doesn't make its own money. It comes from the people, taxation, and by selling debt/bonds which have to be paid back (eventually) with interest. That money to pay back the debt, comes from Taxation and more debt sold to pay back the last debt. Never ending cycle of being in hock.

The Thomas Sowell argument. Not necessary - only we thought “All Men Are Created Equal” - it was only we who betrayed the American credo, made blacks subhumans to justify it, and then used violence to maintain it.

“2. Blacks pay reparations to the offspring of white Union veterans, higher $$ for casualties, who liberated them.”

Why? Blacks led the charge. No slaves escaping, no abolitionist movement. Like I said, whites need to understand what happened, and that history lesson HAS to be a part of the reparations process. For all of our good.

“3. Not a penny from people who immigrated after 1865. Not a penny to people who immigrated after 1865. Appropriate discounts for people of mixed heritage.”

Bullshit. They participated in it by coming here. The government will handle it, I’m sure. You guys sure do have this image, of individuals paying, stuck in your heads. It’s silly.

“4. Afterward, not a word about slavery in any context other than school history, for any reason. Immediate imprisonment or expulsion for any violations.”

Bullshit, again. The problem with this country is you know more about baseball than slavery and reconstruction - that’s why you have such silly imagers in your head of whites lined up to pay me or something. We should accept the 400 years of history we ignore and tell our stories for real. It wasn’t all misery (Henry “Box” Brown) and it wasn’t all white folks. We’ve got stories to tell, Man. Not hateful ones, but real ones that define us, and not this hollow amalgamation we maintain to avoid reminding ourselves we aren’t always perfect.

No, that one is really sick, in both suggestion and thought. America doesn’t need to avoid slavery any more than Germany ignores the Holocaust. We need to grow up, make it right, and stop fighting over it.

That will be enough.

It is a one-sided phenomenon. I don't know anyone who was shunned for voting for Obama, nor do I know anyone who would have suspended a friendship over voting for Hillary. They believe Republicans are evil, and although many Republicans believe abortion is killing infants, which is objectively more terrible than not baking a cake or detailing kids for a month they are willing to remain friends with those who disagree.

Conservatives are missing the point there: those fools are as obstinate as whites are here - while vastly outnumbered! Racism is a demonstration of functional madness, and whites are as determined as newspaper editors to never change, no matter what happens. Like the Nazis, they brought unheard of cruelty to those they condescend to, but conservative whites, here - who love to claim they free slaves -don't care about that.

I pity the fools.

Nah, I never felt him: He’s from Africa, Hawaii, Kansas, and Indonesia - I’m from South Central, Los Angeles. I can’t see him hanging with Ice Cube. He meant little to me - especially hanging with Oprah - just another film-flam man whites will accept in an attempt to keep me and mine quiet. I don’t blame whites for it. I blame Oprah.

“Maybe those who don't feel like citizens just don't want to feel like citizens, as that would mean they have to take some responsibility for their own life choices.”

You didn’t hear me: most blacks, I know, don’t know things you and I take for granted that Americans should know. America does that. Hell, I wandered most of my high school years because I got in fight with two racists on the first day - got blamed for it - and decided to never go through THAT again.

That’s worth reparations right there. No kid should have to deal with these “Native Son” questions and situations on their own.

“The numbers vary according to who's reporting it, but it seems something like 11 people were killed and 70 others wounded by gunfire this past weekend in Chicago.”

Trapped in ghettos, harboring madness, white people made. It’s a tragedy, partially because THEY take no responsibility. We didn’t redline nobody.

Now that’s a fancy idea: the cities blacks just ended up in by chance - as they escaped the lack of law, in the South, only to discover there’s none at their destination, either - is considered reparations. Incredible. Some whites are so inventive when it comes to depriving us of our heritage in this nation.

And does that include Newark, since blacks got off the train and stayed - thinking it was New York - because they A) had never heard a northern accent before and B) couldn't afford to finish the trip when they - former slaves, remember - discovered their innocent mistake? Please say yes. I'd hate to see them go.

@Crack: Appreciate your response. Back at you:

"1. The offspring of the African slave sellers pay back the money they got for selling their fellow Africans, with interest.”

The Thomas Sowell argument. Not necessary - only we thought “All Men Are Created Equal” - it was only we who betrayed the American credo, made blacks subhumans to justify it, and then used violence to maintain it."

Sowell was right. Africans willingly and profitably created slavery. Slavery wasn't just evil because Americans happened to violate their own credo. It was also evil at its point of origin. Reparations must extinguish the sin, not just polish up the credo. The oppression of slavery wasn't just visited upon blacks by whites, but also by fellow blacks: slaves were the offspring of the losers in African struggles. That has to be repaired too.

For all of our good."

Blacks didn't lead the charge of the Civil War. The point is that many whites made a substantial down payment on reparations. Needs to be part of the calculation.

It’s silly."

People who arrived after the abolition of slavery didn't participate in maintaining slavery. Reparations are worth considering as compensation for the evil of slavery and thereby to put an end to claims based on slavery. If the idea is that reparations must pay for any black disadvantage of any kind at any time, then it is a non-starter, since someone, black or not, will always be at some disadvantage, and the precedent of "reparations" will lead to endless recriminations, hence make one main purpose of reparations meaningless.

“4. Afterward, not a word about slavery in any context other than school history, for any reason. Immediate imprisonment or expulsion for any violations.

Bullshit, again." Why? The point of reparations would be a deal: you get what you deserve in compensation, but we get a fresh start, being done with claims based on that terrible injustice.

"The problem with this country is you know more about baseball than slavery and reconstruction"

Well, there are a lot of things "the country" doesn't know, but they don' apply to me and they are irrelevant to the merits of reparations.

"that’s why you have such silly imagers in your head of whites lined up to pay me or something."

One way or another, that would have to happen. How else?

"We should accept the 400 years of history we ignore and tell our stories for real. It wasn’t all misery (Henry “Box” Brown) and it wasn’t all white folks. We’ve got stories to tell, Man. Not hateful ones, but real ones that define us, and not this hollow amalgamation we maintain to avoid reminding ourselves we aren’t always perfect."

I strongly agree. Which is why I don't think reparations are actually the best way to resolve a historical sense of injustice.

Reparations can only repair blacks' sense of historical injustice and their injured self-worth if they want them to be repaired. I don't blame them for not wanting it, or hesitating, though I think there is a better way, as many black leaders have pointed out. But once they want that real repair, monetary reparations become irrelevant.

Hi Cracky! Welcome backy! I've often thought about you. Frequently in the context of how you needed a PC (I have lots), or were going to LMK what was the deal with Mark Griffin, but mostly in terms of your turbulent tenure here, how you shook it up, how in particular you pwn3d the whitelady hostess. I bet she would have thrown you a fuck on pure guilt...

I had forgotten why you flamed out - figuratively died on the hill of reparations, now I remember.

I like you, mostly, and would like to help you, personally, but collectively, I see three problems with reparations:

1) It wouldn't help you (y'all; it might help YOU, but you don't want reparations just for you, right?). The money would flow in, the money would flow out.

From "Francisco's Money Speech" by Ayn Rand:

“Only the man who does not need it, is fit to inherit wealth–the man who would make his own fortune no matter where he started. If an heir is equal to his money, it serves him; if not, it destroys him. But you look on and you cry that money corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his money? Do not envy a worthless heir; his wealth is not yours and you would have done no better with it. Do not think that it should have been distributed among you; loading the world with fifty parasites instead of one, would not bring back the dead virtue which was the fortune. Money is a living power that dies without its root. Money will not serve the mind that cannot match it. Is this the reason why you call it evil?"

2. It would buy nothing for the white people, or the government, that provided the money. Those few who would be grateful, are the ones most likely to refuse. You (y'all) would regard it as late, inadequate, meaningless, insulting, and a sign of weakness and more alms to come. And it wouldn't improve you, or help you, as I said.

3. Again a quote, from Youngblood Preacher to the Chief Millitant:

"I don't owe you SHIT, NIGGER!"

My folks came here in 1920. Never owned a slave.

The people who built this country, admittedly to a degree on the backs of some of your ancestors, are no more, are a dying breed. You've left it too late. Justice delayed is justice denied. You got your freedom. I wish it had been more valuable to you. Some people think it more valuable than life, let alone money.

Now what COULD we do for you? I agree something has to be done for you, because you just can't seem to do it for yourselves. But what? Hmm...(to be continued)

Bad Lieutenant said...

Continued...

Free college education. That is, free good education, through college, but most of the damage done is at the earliest stages, and done largely at home. To really help you, the post-60s attacks on your people, everything Moynihan wrote about, would have to be reversed. Probably have to whip anybody who gives you shit for acting white.

Frankly, many black children would have to be evacuated from the living hells of their native environments. Nice non-black people would take them in. And deracinate them. Unfortunately, there is nothing about the form your race has taken to save. You couldn't be black people any more, just people.

I'd be happy to execute everybody who did this to you. Throw that in as a freebie.

Then... Every black man should be promised a job. At his level. (I said MAN. You first. You should be supporting your women anyway, not living off them.) If you can't perform at a given level, your level to be decreased until you are hauling and lifting and pulling and hammering and picking and scrubbing. But always something for you to do. If you're crippled, we'll find something you can do from a wheelchair.

Anything we're giving to Latinos, will be taken away and given to you. We REALLY don't owe them shit. (We probably owe the Indians more, but we've already settled that.) Asians don't want handouts anyway so you're all we really have to worry about.

If you're going to continue to whine about being victimized by the criminal justice system... Let black neighborhoods be policed by blacks, defendants be judged by blacks, the guilty imprisoned or executed by blacks. You think a black cop will let you "I don't wanna get arrested today" or let you charge him and take his weapon, I guess you can find out.

You can have all abortions by black women totally legal and assisted, or we can ban totally, your choice. You want full liability for child support or none, up to you.

Finally... This has a finite duration. Forty years, or three generations, or something like that.

No, finally: if you don't like it here, we'll take your passport and citizenship and arrange to trade it in for citizenship in any other nation on Earth. Or on the Moon, if feasible. Your choice.

...

Anything else you think would help? Legalize drugs? We can talk. But no, giving you each a hundred grand or a million in cash or whatever you have in mind? Fuck that noise.

Just remember, for all the evils of slavery... The planters in 1865 could have pulled an Auschwitz or a Jonestown or whatever and executed you all. Or in the 1850s they could have sold y'all off to Brazil and washed their hands of you. You'd have never been heard from again. They'd have consumed you in the South American systems like chips.

Oh wait, one more thing... We can go to Africa and rip 'em up for defeating you and selling you to us. We can take their shit and give it to you. If you want, we can overthrow their systems and put you in charge. They can even be your slaves if you want. Or we could just kill 'em for you. At the very least we can fund your programs with the loot of their natural resources. You could run that too, if you don't fuck it up.

The people who built this country, admittedly to a degree on the backs of some of your ancestors,

Not true for many of us. My ancestor, who had my name, was born in New York state in 1835, moved as a young man to Illinois and was a farmer all his life. He had 12 children with his wife who was also born in NY state. Their parents came from Ireland about 1810. M}His mother moved to Illinois after her husband died in 1864. Two of her sons died in the Civil War 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. William survived Shiloh only to die of a wound in Vicksburg. I have his letters to his wife.

He is buried in Memphis TN where the Gayoso hospital was located. They had to sneak the wounded past the rebels in Vicksburg to get them to the hospital.

I owe Crack nothing but good will.

He might be more concerned about the 71 shootings in Chicago this weekend. All blacks shooting blacks.

Three black teens were arrested for a violent armed carjacking. The DA lowered the charges to unlawful occupation of a vehicle and released them. They will be back committing crime in a week.

In Arizona, they would be three dead teens.

Everybody I know here has a loaded handgun in the house and most have one in the car, like I do.

I hope you haven't fled, Cracky. Some people are being IMHO excessively hostile and rudely so. Of course, you may not like me either, but I'm for you, just not for your plan.

Is there anything anyone can do for you personally? Want a job? I think some people here are CA employers. Need a computer, LMK.

What is interesting to me is that African blacks and West Indian blacks have none of the social pathology we see with Crack.

I interviewed a guy from Nigeria two weeks ago. He has two Engineering degrees.

I asked him if he was Ibo (now called Igbo) and he smiled and said yes. There is some study of Ibos who have a particular skill at math. Many are "quants" in the financial industry.

I see kids from Uganda coming here and joining the US military to get citizenship and GI Bill. They have none of the victim complex that is destroying so many American blacks.

The West Indians also have a legacy of slavery but not the social pathology. I think it is coming from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and the other race pimps.

Not true for many of us.

Sure, Mike, but like President Trump, I realize that I can sharpen the pencil in such details only so much before nobody is listening. i said, "to a degree."

My overarching point is, giving a mass of blacks, or anybody else, masses of unearned money, would be poison to them, aside from being silly and impossible. What CAN be done that WOULD help, we can discuss. I wish desperately that their lives could be saved and not wasted.

And just so you know, they got some terrific con men types and users coming out of the West Indies and Africa. Not all spotless. But broadly lacking (though capable of emulating, echoing, exploiting) the particular pathologies of American blacks, true.

How do you know the race of all the posters here?

But you're missing the energy of counterculture, which is an important, invigorating part of America. This is especially so when the main culture is very repressed and censorious, and if you won't begin to try to understand that, then you know something is happening, but you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Frederson?. - Althouse

I was going to write a snarky reply to him and here you opened a can of whoop ass on him already.

So now I've got a pathology - great. I lost my shirt helping an African dude one time. Thought he was all innocent and lost and he ripped me off for $100.00.

You guys trip too hard - and have no idea what creates this "pathology" - so no idea how to stop it.

I tell you, and you cower, bring snark, or lie. Rarely honesty. And I'm expected to smile through it. Instead of being like Glenn Reynolds and threatening to run people down with my car, right?

I get punished for that.

Being human.

I have a pretty good idea. You were sounding reasonable until you brought up that old idiocy of "Reparations."

Michael K,

Take it up with The Man. Explain why he's wrong. Please.

Crack, I think he said something about "Content of our Character, not the color of our skin."

Affirmative Action is all the reparations you will get and, if that is not enough, other countries would welcome you.

Michael, the man lived for 42 years - and said much more than that - did you ever bother to read or hear anything else? You're like those Democrats who can only see the FOX channel, in a sea of liberal media, and declares it holds all the power.

It's a self-evident lie.
