I have always stood for the anthem. That's how I was raised and I like doing it. I like custom.
But I always assumed it was something I was doing voluntarily. If somebody had told me, "Citizen, you must stand!" The class system in England used to be pretty harsh. It determined how people judged each other, what they liked, and lots of things that had nothing to do with class. It's still around, but my impression is that it is no longer so harsh and all encompassing. People are judged and evaluated by things other than their class backgrounds........The race system in America is a tad more durable but, over time, also seems to be weakening. I've known a fair number of black people who have joined the hive and have responses and morals that are indistinguishable from their fellow Americans. I don't think they're outliers or Uncle Toms, but are rather the wave of the future. Among certain blacks being too "street" or "ghetto" or "ignorant" will get you more grief from fellow blacks than by "acting white"........I don't know if the story arc of America bends toward justice, but it definitely bends toward homogenization. Among my parents' generation there was quite a lot of conflict between Italians and Irish. Among my generation, those are the people we chose our mates from. I suppose our kids will marry blacks and Hispanics. The Jewish kids are hitting on the Asians.......I don't think that people will get along any better, but they will find things other than race to fight about. Religious and class differences are already somewhat muted.
